“Totally evil alien monsters invade Earth and humans have to fight them and—” fuck that noise, here’s a concept where the protagonist befriends one of them.

Disclaimer: I did not come up with the name “xenobeast.” I just read it somewhere and felt like it’d be a fitting name for these guys.

The part of writing nautical historical fiction no one prepares you for is having to chart a realistic course, taking into account the winds, ports, and other factors 😭 finally though, HMS Hornet in Alien Creatures has a decent, logical course to follow that aligns with my plot...

Does AM qualify as a creature?
Pretty sure the concept of ante meridiem is too esoteric to be a creature. I could try to make one if you want.
… wait you mean the supercomputer thingie from No Mouth? Nah. Pretty sure it magics up a giant bird at some point though so that’s a creature I guess.

Anyway, still a fun thing to do, here's the list of people:

Art depicting the main characters, wildlife, and technology of Edgar Rice Burroughs' seminal sci fi fantasy book series The Marian Series aka the world of Barsoom. Fans of Star Wars and Animorphs may see some similarities in the alien creatures and aesthetics of this art! This American book series which started in 1912 is an early example of the "isekai" genre that includes my favourite anime series Vision of Escaflowne. The art is by Don Marquez and is shared from the Facebook group "For the Love of All Things Edgar Rice Burroughs". I highly recommend joining this friendly and passionate fan group if you're on Facebook!

I have been working hard on the Thumbnails for the next video. Finished the 3rd one just in time for artfight. Really proud of how these turned out. The next series is 3 part for a game called:
In Other Waters
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted to make pieces that brought to life all of the cool creatures you see in that game as it is very minimalist visually and its all in the writing. It is basically playing as the high tech dive suit of a marine biologist on another planets ocean. You help Dr Ellery Vas search for her missing partner who called her to this mysterious ocean world where you find the first alien life outside of earth.

This was done as an art trade for a DeviantArt friend. These are their two original extraterrestrial characters, locked into a devastating Duel of the Bongos.
Ink and Prismacolor pencil over watercolor.

I'm in the process of drafting my next nautical horror, This Savage Kingdom's Southern Pacific sister, 'Alien Creatures', which is Alien and The Thing meets The Last Voyage of The Demeter, and I already love my sweet foppish naturalist who loves shooting things like any good Victorian man ❤
Alien Creatures has strong eco-horror vibes and conservation and anti-colonial themes ⚓

Mr Harcourt was the ship’s naturalist. A gentleman, since only gentlemen could afford to study such things. He was young for his post, from what others said. Pale and narrow-faced, with a very thin, dark moustache and a neatly trimmed beard running along his jawline. His hair was equally dark, and though short seemed perpetually fluffy, lending him a wild, somewhat harried appearance that Johnny supposed fit a man of science well. Weren’t they all eccentrics, those learned men who went to sea for love of nature? Johnny loved the sea, but he expected he loved it in a different way to how Mr Harcourt loved his birds and beasts. Mr Harcourt liked to collect his specimens in cases and under glass domes, whereas Johnny would never dream of caging up the sea, even if one could do such a mad thing. He figured it rather defeated the point.
Mr Harcourt certainly didn’t love the sea, himself: Johnny and every other man aboard had seen him those first few days they’d set sail, green to the gills. He’d spent most of their first week hunched over the gunwale being sick as a dog.

Meetcute ❤ you're a sailor on an 1860s surveying ship and the ship's naturalist has spent a week throwing up on the upper deck ❤
Cecil Harcourt also owns a dog on the ship - a very pretty spaniel named Beagle, for Darwin's ship, which doesn't cause any confusion at all. Of course.
