We have "aliefs" and "beliefs" - let me introduce "celiefs": something that we worry *has a high chance of being true*, but aren't quite convinced of.
Often this is something that society/experts/someone you admire says is true, but you don't see the reasoning behind.
We may look for evidence that might convince us of the celief, or behave as if we already believe the celief; this is not exactly performative, but more like an act of "hedging" -- so that if the celief turns out to be true, we've avoided causing harm. We would do this regardless of whether people see it, but it can still feel "disingenuous" since we haven't exactly internalized the celief that we're acting on.
____________________________
This seems like it might be the difference between OCD themes and attenuated* delusions: You alieve your attenuated delusions while you celieve your OCD theme
* attenuated delusions meaning delusions you're capable of questioning. They become full-blown delusions sometimes. But they seem categorically similar, so I feel like the correct line to draw is [alief vs celief] rather than ["truly believe it" vs "know rationally that it's false"]
_____________________________
Some celiefs you might hold include:
vaccines work/covid is real
global warming is real
race/gender is a social construct
racism/sexism/etc exists
victims are telling the truth
homosexuality is bad/a sin
you will go to hell for doing bad things
i am the real abuser
i'm faking my mental illness for attention
i'm virtue signaling; only pretending to care/understand/be sorry/etc
my intrusive thoughts are who i am deep down
i was abused because i wanted it
Celiefs can be good or bad; sometimes it's good to hedge your bets on something you don't know much about and trust the people who have lived/studied the thing, but celiefs are also how people gaslight you.
I would classify anything that you maladaptively act upon but want to work through in therapy as a celief rather than a belief (if you really believe it, you wouldn't want to work on trying to not believe it, because from your perspective that would be deluding yourself)

imo the best response as a lad (who otherwise is not one of the catalysts of said ire) to increased hostility between the sexes is to try to adopt the purported mindset of those ladies who see a man as a nice addition but not a necessity for a fulfilling life
and i mean all aspects of it: hobbies, fostering connections, all the obvious stuff, but above all, a zen attitude. no bragging about how you've sworn off women or routines about how you're a lowly worm who obviously no-one wants to be with, no shutting the door permanently, just realizing relationships are a neutral good with pros and cons and not letting yourself be held hostage by any claims of shorter lifespan, loneliness in old age or that singlehood is proof you are a disaster
because you know what? not all those dudettes leading the solo life without rending of garments have all their ducks in a row either. heck, some of them are a disaster zone in human form, and those failings might well have an impact on her relationship prospects, but would you side with a man who laughs at the vision of her ending up as a cat lady?
why would you take such a thing on the chin when the genders are reversed? it's just the classic women as gatekeepers of hooking up and hitching up. true in some cases, good for them, but whyever would you want to be with someone who dangles her approval over your head while treating you with disdain? you know intuitively how such relationships would like from the inside, and unless you're into shouting matches it's fucking grim. not worth the hassle, even though it takes effort to bend your aliefs that way
obvious caveat is that i'm 35 with a relatively full life, on good terms with family, median income, a relatively easy job and a host of extracurriculars that keep me busy and friends that live close by. question arises: would i trade all of that in to move to a different place where i would be guaranteed a good relationship, but all other perks of my life become uncertain? at this point i don't think i would, and it's kind of spooky how gently that mindset has crept in. it ain't complete, otherwise i wouldn't type this essay, and there are still spells of feelings of personal failing, having missed the boat and so on, but that's just as often associated with environmental factors like staying up late, stress of being busy or boyrotting on a given day. curious to see if with a bit more self-discipline and planning in those departments, the bouts will become non-existent

extremely common; also like we grow up code-switching a lot, it mostly feels totally natural not to use thou when speaking to someone without a noticeable northern english accent
[on reflection the ‘we’ here is everyone but is most centrally culturally middle class types, who are more likely to have had teachers who do not speak the local dialect or indeed tolerate it in their classes. And most likely to have parents or grandparents who are not from Yorkshire who attempt to apply pressure against the kids developing the local accent/dialect.]
the anglophone t/v distinction fans i keep seeing on this app need to get weeaboo-grade obsessed with Yorkshire culture it would be so fucking funny for me personally.
and it’s not like it’s been done either. fandom tumblr’s teaboo phase didn’t touch on this shit at all; closest they got to recognising England has a north was an alien from Salford and even then they preferred the one that was a Scottish guy doing a generic southern English accent.
(for today’s lucky 10000 or whatever the number in the xkcd comic is: in Yorkshire (and to some extent in a few other parts of northern England), English retains a t/v distinction with ‘thou’ and ‘you’.)
Edit: I grew up speaking an english dialect with a t/v distinction: language nerds AMA

I've signed up for a program that will pay me for doing in-home caretaking work for my mom's elderly partner (it's work I've already been doing for free for years, might as well get paid for it). I got my first paychecks yesterday and my bank cleared the funds by this morning!
I was owed a few months of back-pay because of how the application process worked (I started the application process November last year), so yesterday I went from having $70 in the bank to having almost $2700! My regular pay is going to be about $900 per month. It's not much, but it's a big step up from where I was a month ago both in terms of family/household income and in terms of my personal financial autonomy!
Lately I've had the frightening realization that I'm almost 40 now, my life for the last 10 years or so has resembled that of a bird atrophying in an austere cage, this state of affairs has enough inertia that there's no obvious inevitable end to it except me dying of old age or being social murdered (likely some combination of both), and even this low level of safety and comfort is fragile, the obvious plausible default ways my situation might change in the near future are that it gets much worse, e.g. that I quickly end up homeless after my elderly mom dies and her social security deposits stop coming. This realization frightened me enough that I have begun to make more systematic efforts to improve my life. That probably sounds like some Jordan Peterson bootstraps thing but actually a big part of the economic/financial side of this project for me is to stop listening to the neoliberal eligibility worker in my head, stop doing welfare avoidance, get a lot more strategic about leveraging the welfare system to try to get my family into better conditions. So far, my big project to improve the living conditions of my family and improve my own life has achieved two big successes:
- The thing I talked about in the first and second paragraphs of this post.
- I have spent my life from puberty up to now semi-voluntarily celibate, I think mostly because of a heterosexual male version of lesbian sheepitude induced by a combination of over-correction away from being a type of guy women complain about a lot, former bullied kid alief that other people are likely to experience me soliciting interaction with them as an irritation, and assessment that most women wouldn't want a male partner who starts with my socio-economic condition (poor and still lives with my mom). I would like to begin having an erotic life that at least occasionally includes sex with one or more other people, and to that end I have made a resolution to be more forward in expressing romantic/sexual attraction/desire. By doing this, I was able to make "Tumblr is a hook-up app" work for me, I have an appointment with a woman who wants to take my virginity in June!
These feel like good signs. My wings are not powerless and dead!
The next big thing on my agenda is to try to get my family out of our tiny overcrowded slum apartment and into a better place, one where we can have a kitchen, a bathroom we don't share with other tenants, and where I can have a private room. My mother and her partner are both elderly and I'm now an officially registered caretaking worker for my mom's partner, so I am hoping I can find some housing assistance for seniors program that will give them a better apartment and let me live in it too as a live-in caretaker.

I spent a long time alieving that I was like, a not-quite-human, a failed human attempt, an abortive human. Which was painful, bc I yearned for humanity. But now I’ve achieved alief in my human-ness, but I am surrounded socially by ppl who regard their humanity as a sort of prison (I am instinctively mb more defensive about this than would be reasonable)
Transhuman not as in transhumanism but as in transitioned-to-humans, but destined for life among the resentful AHABs

Note
The menstruation obsession predates early 2000s internet feminism; it's a very second wave thing. It disappeared from more mainstream internet feminism as the distinctive features of the second wave curdled into association with terfery. You still see traces of it on occasion; for example, radfems in the Worm fandom are associated with a strong belief or at least alief that Taylor's trigger event is a misogynist plot point because it suggests there would be something bad about being stuck in a locker full of menstrual products. (In fact, this frequently shades into a belief that Taylor is is misogynist on a Watsonian level for being bothered by it.) To be overly charitable to this impulse, it is matched by a corresponding weakman in the form of failed-sex-ed AMABs in the fandom, especially in the lowest-common-denominator areas like SpaceBattles and r/Wormfanfic, who wildly overestimate how medically hazardous the locker would have been; obviously the trigger event was not about a physical threat to Taylor's health.
im always glad to recieve reminders of how deranged certain sections of the worm fandom can get, it keeps me grateful for the circle of mostly reasonable people i managed to surround myself with in this website

This word is interesting to me. It's basically an automatic attitude you take that in some ways is like a belief, but often the alief can be in opposition to what you believe.
