The poetry that inspired Jeff Buckley
Aimee Ferrier
Sun 1 October 2023 21:15, UK
Voices as incredible as the one belonging to Jeff Buckley don’t come around too often. Unfortunately, after releasing one record, Grace, Buckley, with all his potential, was taken away too soon. At the age of 30, the singer went for a swim from which he never returned, drowning in the Mississippi River.
Yet, his legacy lives on as one of the most influential artists to emerge from the 1990s, and his music is widely celebrated today for its emotional and lyrical complexity. Not only did Buckley possess an otherworldly voice, but he was also an extremely gifted guitar player and writer, with all his talents combining to create a masterful body of work.
Even when Buckley was covering other artists’ songs, such as ‘Lilac Wine’, ‘The Other Woman’ and ‘Hallelujah’, he imbued the pieces with his own distinctive style. Yet, his penchant for covers wasn’t a reflection of an aversion to writing. Buckley knew how to pen a stunningly poetic track, with songs like ‘Lover, You Should’ve Come Over’ and ‘Morning Theft’ suggesting that even if Buckley didn’t have the vocal pipes he was gifted with, he’d get by just fine as a writer.
Buckley took inspiration from many different writers and musicians when writing his own songs. Musically, Buckley looked back to folk artists like Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and, of course, his own father, Tim Buckley, from whom he was estranged. Elsewhere, he loved the work of Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the rich tones of Nina Simone, and Led Zeppelin, calling Robert Plant “my man”.
However, when it came to his literary inspirations, Buckley had an extensive book collection, which he no doubt looked to for ideas when writing his lyrics. He owned a lot of poetry, with Rainer Maria Rilke proving to be a particular favourite. Not only did Buckley own Dunio Elegies, Rilke on Love and Other Difficulties: Translations and Considerations Poems from the Book of Hours, but he also owned his epistolary collection Letters to a Young Poet.
Buckley was also a fan of the classic American poet Walt Whitman, owning Leaves of Grass and From the Soil. Of course, no poetry collection is complete without copies of Arthur Rimbaud’s A Season in Hell and Illuminations, alongside some Charles Baudelaire – Buckley-owned Paris Spleen. The singer also owned the Selected Poems of confessional poet Anne Sexton and modernist writer T.S Eliot.
Check out Buckley’s complete poetry collection below.
The poetry that inspired Jeff Buckley:
Dunio Elegies – Rainer Maria Rilke
Poems from the Book of Hours – Rilke

Moz Solo was already on it @lovely-lady-fox! FamousWhenDead posted the whole thing:
Johnny Marr: How could Meryl Streep agree to be in Mamma Mia?
The guitarist lets us into his cultural life, from his love of David Hockney to making his friends watch a Joan Didion documentary
My favourite piece of music For a long time now, it’s been My Goal’s Beyond by John McLaughlin. Like his work with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, it is in a genre entirely of its own. It’s unquantifiable and makes me feel a certain way, no matter what happens in the outside world.
The lyric I wish I’d written “You’re going to reap just what you sow”, from Perfect Day by Lou Reed.
The instrument I wish I’d learnt Piano. I can play it, but only in amateurish fashion. I should say though there are guitar players who play the piano nicely like Neil Young, Paul McCartney and David Bowie. They play it as a means to an end and do wonderful things with it. But I would like to be a few levels up from there.
The music that cheers me up Any good pop music, which by definition usually means contemporary. There are things from my past that of course make me feel good. But there’s something about hearing music that’s fresh, upbeat and represents the modern world — it makes you feel that everything is OK.
I’m having a fantasy dinner party, I’ll invite these artists and authors Gary Oldman, Muhammad Ali and certainly Marilyn Monroe.
And I’ll put on this music Spirit Power: The Best of Johnny Marr.
Overrated I don’t tend to like shitting on people, but Mamma Mia!, for God’s sake, or We Will Rock You or any of those sorts of musicals. How did it get to that? We’re supposed to go along with the idea that they’re good. What was Meryl Streep thinking she was doing starring in that film, and Julie Walters? What were they thinking? There are a lot of things culturally that we’ve just gone along with and they really must stop.
Underrated
Blindboy Boatclub, the artist and musician from Limerick, is best known as one half of the Irish comedy hip-hop group the Rubberbandits. He’s amazing, has such an interesting way of thinking and also hosts the brilliant series The Blindboy Podcast too. One of the best books I have ever read is his Topographia Hibernica. I can’t recommend him or it enough.
My favourite author
Aldous Huxley. People would assume I’m thinking about Brave New World orThe Doors of Perception, but I’m actually referring to his work after he moved to the United States in the second half of his life. His essays and lectures are even better than his earlier work. I rediscovered him in the Nineties and he is my actual hero. Everything you read of his is an education.
The book I’m reading
Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson. It’s a trip, moving around from style to style. The novel is loosely based on Greek mythology, but set in modern times. It’s relatable and super interesting. PJ Harvey introduced me to Carson, an intriguing cross between an essayist and a poet.
The book I couldn’t finish
The Perennial Philosophy by Aldous Huxley. Just couldn’t do it.
The book I’m ashamed I haven’t read Ulysses by James Joyce. It just sounds so hard going. I love the idea of it and feel genuinely bad that I haven’t read it, but I do also feel like I know so much about it already. I admire it enough, without feeling the need to put myself through the hassle of reading it.
My favourite film Sergio Leone’s film Once Upon a Time in America. When it was first released, I went to see it a few times and decided then it was the best thing I’d ever seen. I recently saw The End We Start From, starring Jodie Comer. It’s so good. Amazingly, I came away from it with this feeling of triumph of the human spirit. It says a lot about what it means to be human and what we fundamentally need, which is compassion, connection, love and understanding. And Comer is just so believable in the role.
The box set I’m hooked on I’m rewatching Nurse Jackie. There’s so much good stuff out there that whenever I occasionally revisit old, great stuff, you forget how much it stands up. I like anything Edie Falco is in. I also have just rewatched the documentary Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold. I’ve watched it at least three times and whenever someone comes to my place that hasn’t watched it, I watch it with them.
My favourite TV series It has to be Mad Men. One of my friends is eagle-eyed and noticed that when they put an album on a turntable, it has the correct label from the Sixties. That’s crazy.
The film I walked out on
There are loads, often stuff I take my kids to see and they don’t even notice I’d left. I didn’t enjoy Baby Driver — I didn’t like the music in that at all.
I wasted an evening watching Manchester City play in the Champions League final in 2021.
The last movie that made me cry These days I can cry at almost anything so I can’t remember.
The place I feel happiest Running around Brooklyn, over the Williamsburg Bridge. Or around Portland, Oregon. Whenever I’m at those places, I always run unless I’m injured. I’ve done a lot of things in my life, but nothing quite beats that.
My guiltiest cultural pleasure Cheese and onion pasty, chips and peas. Anybody who says that’s not a culture doesn’t know what they are talking about.
If I could own one painting it would be We Two Boys Together Clinging by David Hockney. Any of his work would be a dream to own. Even the iPad stuff is beautiful. I went to see David Hockney: Bigger and Closer at the Lightroom and it was great.

Prelim Round 1
Tumblr media
They are in order left to right, top to bottom; Top 2 move on
Propaganda submitted:
Chad and Ryan High School Musical
All you need to do is watch "I don't dance" and the follow up scene where they switched outfits
Roxas and Namine Kingdom Hearts
Hyacinth Hippo and Ben Ali Gator Fantasia
Gracefully weaving, jumping, and turning as they perform the ballet of a lifetime, these two are completely engrossed in each other!
Steve Rogers and Tony Stark Avengers Assemble
Steve and Tony from Avengers Assemble are basically married. They are constantly worried about each other and protecting each other. They are teasing, flirting, and hugging each other all the time. I love all versions of Stony but this one is truly one of the best ones.
Dr. Ann and Dr. James Possible Kim Possible
As true "soul mates," they have each others' back, support their parenting decisions, and chuckle at their shared jokes. Ann especially seems to find James funny. Though they both have fairly busy schedules, they still frequently find time to spend with each other and their children. They love to sing while on road trips.
Mulan, Aurora, and Philip Once Upon A Time
While not canon, that s throuple shows a great love story between three people, and portrays the love that they have for each other through the challenges they face. Philip sacrifices himself for them both after teaming up with Mulan to save Aurora from the sleeping curse. Then Aurora and Mulan team up to save Philip after this. Throughout, we get to see how their loyalties are to each other and how they'll do anything to keep each other safe, even if it means risking their lives (or hearts! Both figuratively and literally...)
Sora, Kairi, and Rika Kingdom Hearts
The three are literally held together by destiny!

too many years lost in history
aka i have the songs from six the musical stuck in my head and since it’s kind of a “playing into the stereotypes to interrogate the stereotype” take on the wives of henry viii, i thought the dramatic takes on the characters would mesh well with the mistresses (and wife) of aegon the unworthy. also i need something to do with my hands when as i listen to all the asoiaf audiobooks lmao
naerys targaryen

BUT NOW ITS US ALONE
SO THEY HAD NO CHOICE
(SO WE HAD NO CHOICE)
WE’RE TAKING BACK THE MICROPHONE
IM GONNA RAISE MY VOICE
(WE’RE GONNA RAISE OUR VOICE)
GEORGE SAID WE ALWAYS NEED YOUR LOVE BUT NOW ITS TIME TO RISE ABOVE!
if you wanna know the songs, in case any of the lyrics interested you (go listen to six pls i love it):

Skeletwins AU Theme Songs
Part 1: The Characters!
(All of them are songs I actually have in my playlist hehe)
Sans - Upside Down by Jack Johnson
Lighthearted, fun, positive and invoking a sense of nostalgia, I thought this song was perfect for Skeletwins!Sans. Curious George was one of my favourite movies growing up, but nowadays this song tends to make me think of what my version of Sans was like before the incident: inquisitive, happy and full of childlike wonder. He still has that childlike wonder inside of him, though it's sometimes overshadowed by more negative stuff that happens in his life. But in his purest, happiest form, this is Sans.
Papyrus - Almost There from The Princess and the Frog
If Skeletwins!Papyrus was a Disney Princess, he'd be Tiana with a little bit of Rapunzel mixed in. He's very ambitious and driven, and when he sets his heart on something, he will stop at nothing to get it. In his case, he wants to be a Royal Guard, but as we all know, he secretly craves friendship. He can be rather serious, but he's a giant goofball, no doubt. Overall, I just think it's the perfect song for him.
Alphys - Dark Side by Kelly Clarkson
I don't know how, I don't know why... But I think of her every time I listen to this song. I can imagine her singing this to Undyne or Asgore or Sans or anyone she cares about, being unsure if they even want to stay with her with all her flaws and weaknesses... It just suits her.
Undyne - Warriors by Imagine Dragons
I dare you to listen to this song and TELL me this doesn't suit Undyne! I DARE YOU! THIS IS HER! I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS, THIS! IS! HER!
Asgore - It's Quiet Uptown from Hamilton
I can easily imagine Asgore in Alex's place in this song, and Toriel in Eliza's. I don't know, I just feel like this is something Asgore wishes he could do with Toriel... to try and get her back... And of course there's the whole vilomah thing they both got going on...
And the characters who appear later on under the cut! This might be a bit spoilery for my story...
Mettaton - Applause by Lady Gaga
Do I even need to explain?
Napstablook - Sat On The Floor by Caleb Hyles and Illymation
I can just imagine Napstablook and Shyren singing this in a studio together. It's practically perfect for them both, really! Too bad Shyren doesn't appear all that much in my story. But Napstablook does, so that's something!
Toriel - I'm gonna need help with this one. I don't have a song that could accurately describe her! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Flowey - Insane by Black Gryph0n and Everything At Once by Lenka
Flowey gets two songs because they show two sides of him. Insane because it really only makes me think of Flowey when I hear it! I think of it as Flowey's descent into darkness and sadism coming out to play when I hear this song! As for Everything At Once, well... I interpret it as Flowey wanting to try literally everything to try and fill the void left in him, since he's soulless and everything. He wants to do everything, be everything so he could FEEL something again. There will be a chapter covering this at some point once he's introduced.
Chara - Rock In God's Shoe by Sushi Soucy
At first I was debating giving this one to Frisk, but I think it suits Chara's nihilistic mindset even more. My version of Chara isn't necessarily good or necessarily evil. They're more like... Well, they're Chara. Someone who doesn't lean towards one way or the other, and I think this song describes their mindset and their character in this AU at the same time, so that's great!
Frisk - The Main Character by Will Wood
This is my version of Frisk in a nutshell. Imagine if a goofy kid who had little to no control over the bad things that happened in their life suddenly got literal godlike powers. THIS is just the consequence of that. Honestly, thinking about Frisk pains me because I WANT TO WRITE THEM SO BAD, I KNOW THEY'RE GONNA BE SO MUCH FUN TO WRITE BECAUSE OF THE CHARACTERISATION I HAVE FOR THEM, but I CAN'T! Because... They don't appear until the fourth part... Gosh darn it. At least there's this song...
H I M - Everything Stays by Rebecca Sugar
I don't know how to explain this one. I think it's more like everything surrounding him than anything. Or I can imagine him singing this to Sans and Papyrus at some point. Either way...

Tagged by @spinsterennui, thank you for thinking of me!! 😄❤️
Rules: shuffle your “on repeat” playlist from spotify/the music service of your choice and post the first 10 tracks
I'm just happy I wasn't tagged in this a couple of weeks ago lol. I go through phases when I'm listening to music and I have been in the middle of a nostalgia trip ca 2006-12 mixed with Opera/Swedish Folk Music/various orchestral stuff. Let's just leave that there 😅
1. Tu Te Reconnaitras by Anne-Marie David. Slowly getting into eurovision-mode and this is my usual starting point. And I just love the song so 🤷‍♀️
2. Still Reigning by Self Esteem. This song just slaps tbh, give it a listen.
3. God Morgon by Ida Redig. I start every morning with this song lol. It's the first one on my "Morning" playlist and I (usually) go for a walk as soon as I'm up so this song and I are well acquainted.
4. Chemicals React (A&A Version) by Aly & AJ. I've been on a nostalgia trip since new year's, and while I do listen to their new stuff as well I've had this one on repeat for awhile.
5. Anti-Hero by Taylor Swift. There's always something by Taylor on this list, not surprised at all.
6. Blossoms by The Amazing Devil. I have this (and basically all their other songs) on multiple playlists so it's no wonder it showed up here. If you haven't listened to their stuff before you should absolutely do so. Preferably right now please and thank you.
7. Come Give Me Love - Swedish Version by First Aid Kit. Also on the "Morning" playlist. And the study one. And the one I listen to in the evening. And when I'm writing. I just love this song lol.
8. Adieu Mon Homme by Pomme. Same as above.
9. Maybe You’re The Problem by Ava Max. First song on my playlist for studying, usually the first song I play on it even when I have it on shuffle.
10. How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) by Jr. Walker & The All Stars. This one is on my "Sunday" playlist. I may have had it on repeat yesterday. No comment.
Feel free to ignore this if you don't feel like doing it, I'm just tagging the first few mutuals I had in my activity: @theladyofsilverfountains @rocksolidnarwhal @lavendercoded ❤️

The Long List of Books I Read in 2024
Like many of the kids I grew up with, I consumed books more than read them when I was a kid. It was one of my favorite things to do, especially since, as a kid, you have ample time to do it. However, by the time I finished getting my BA in creative writing I was so burnt out with reading (and writing) that I didn't even want to try either for a number of years.
Back in 2019 I decided to start both again. I've been trying to be incredibly kind to myself and set realistic reading goals each January. For 2024 my reading goal was 16 books and I managed to read 45.
As someone who recently found out they have ADHD I realized that was a contributing factor to why I find it pretty difficult to physically read books nowadays. Now, most of my reading is done via audiobook so that I can multitask as I listen. That's not to say I don't physically read books as well, but I know for a fact I'd never have gotten close to this number and would have been endlessly frustrated with myself if physically reading was the only way I read.
This year I read so many books I loved and very few I felt meh about. I sought out authors I'd never read before and found many that I want to read more from in the upcoming year.
Moving into 2025 my reading goal for the year will likely be 20 books. Even though I've been able to far exceed the number of books I read with each passing year, I still think it's far more productive for me to slowly increase my goal each year.
I'm currently in the middle of listening to The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo and Immortal Dark by Tigest Girma while reading the Midnight Mass art book by Abbie Bernstein. Overall, I'm excited for what's to come!
So, without further ado! Here are the books I read each month in 2024. Happy New Year and happy reading!
