MWW Artwork of the Day (12/30/23) Hocine Ziani (Algerian, born 1953) La nuit de la fuite en Égypte (2015) Oil on canvas, 120 x 160 cm. Dürr Foundation collection, Germany
Combining realism with hyperrealism, Ziani's work depicts the different shades of his native Algeria and all aspects of life in the Sahara, the place where he mastered color, composition and perspective. The background of many of Ziani's paintings resemble the luminous, romantic dust of an on-coming mirage, heightening the drama of his otherwise simple scenes. The result is a sobering and clean composition injected with the artist's distinct tonal range and talent for shadow and light.

Zaida Ben-Yusuf

Portrait photographer Zaida Ben-Yusuf was born in London in 1869. Ben-Yusuf photographed some of the most prominent literary, political, and artistic figures of her time, including Theodore Roosevelt, Grover Cleveland, Jacob Riis, and Leonard Wood. Instead of following traditional portrait conventions, she drew inspiration from artists and pictorial photographers of her day. The famous, exclusive Linked Ring photography society included Ben-Yusuf's work in an 1896 exhibition. The following year, she was included in F. Holland Day's exhibition at the Royal Photographic Society. In 1898, Ben-Yusuf exhibited at the Camera Club of New York.
Zaida Ben-Yusuf died in 1933 at the age of 63. In 2008, the National Portrait Gallery hosted an exhibition devoted to her life and work.

Born #OTD, prolific Algerian artist Baya Mahieddine (12 Dec 1931 -9 Nov 1998), whose 1st exhibition in Paris in 1957 (at age 16) caught the eye of the likes of Pablo Picasso and Andre Breton. Both birds and fish show up often in her art!

Do you have any tips on learning arabic as a super beginner? Its been a few months and I still cant get the alphabet down and i find even kids youtube content hard to keep up with :(. Granted it’s been a long time since i tried learning a new language and tbh i dont think it was ever a strong suit of mine but i’d like to change that! Was/is there anything that was effective in making things ‘click’ for you? Someone recommended watching tv shows or listening to music helps to simulate an immersive experience, do you have any recommendations on this front?
For me I listen to a lot of music! Mostly rappers on the BLTNM (pronounced "blatinum") label based in Ramallah, but I also just root around looking for other artists. I personally like Shabjdeed, Daboor, R3D, and Fawzi. I also like Saint Levant, an Algerian-Palestinian-Usamerican artist and Zeyne, who is also Palestinian-Usamerican I believe. Saint Levant's poems in particular tend to be simple and easy to understand.
Other than that I would really recommend memorizing some of Mahmoud Darwish's short poems, like مساء صغير and على هذه الأرض ما يستحق الحياة
For me I found that this really made the conjugations of verbs, both in fuS7a and in 3amiyyah to feel natural. And then I'd really recommend using NovelArabic I think it's a really wonderful and incredibly well-designed language-learning website (also completely free, for all features!)
أتمنى لك حظ موفق يا حبيبي~
