Stevie starts a fire outside. It's chilly, so David insists Stevie wear one of his sweaters.  For Stevie's part, she wraps them in an old quilt.  It's orange and brown and green, and WAY out of David's aesthetic but it's so fucking warm that David can hardly argue. They share a joint and drink cheap beer, and soon Stevie's asleep on his shoulder.  David does his best to stay still - be a pillow even when Patrick's truck pulls up.  Alexis gets out of the cab, which David finds funny. He doesn't know why. Patrick gets out too, and David waves him down. Patrick tilts his hat, and sits beside him, carrying a bag of treats.  Alexis flanks Stevie. "Button's going to teach us going how to make smores."  David giggles. "Who is doing to do what now?"  Patrick chuckles. "Don't ask me."  "Isn't he just as cute as a button?!" Alexis exclaims, handing over a marshmallow on a stick.  Stevie stirs and turns to Patrick, who tips his hat. "I'm dreaming."  Alexis puts her hand on Stevie's leg. "Hey, can we talk?"  Stevie slowly nods and follows Alexis inside.  David watches them, scowling.  "Can I hold you?"

my misspent youth and my slow decline

Four double drabbles from four characters about something that haunts them.

Or, the author projects feelings onto an unprecedented four characters at once.

Patrick tries not to think of it, but it comes to him anyway. There are some nights he lays awake haunted by the what ifs. He doesn’t believe in fate, not really, but he knows that he and David met right when they were supposed to. Still, it doesn’t stop him from wondering how things might have been different if they’d met earlier. If he had figured out that he was gay sooner. If he hadn’t spent so much time trying to make things work with Rachel. Logically, he knows these experiences all made him who he is, but the thought of all that wasted time that he could have spent with David, that he could have been happy leaves a bitter taste in his mouth.
