Casting is Out For Premiere of Lavrosky's Romeo and Juliet at the Bolshoi!
April 4th (opening night):
Juliet: Elizaveta Kokoreva Romeo: Daniil Potaptsev Mercutio: Daniil Lopatin Tybalt: Mikhail Lobukhin
April 5th:
Juliet: Evgenia Obraztsova Romeo: Artem Ovcharenko Mercutio: Alexei Putintsev Tybalt: Alexander Vodopetov
April 6th (matinée):
Juliet: Eleonora Sevenard Romeo: Denis Rodkin Mercutio: Mark Chino Tybalt: Nikita Kapustin
April 6th (evening):
Juliet: Svetlana Zakharova Romeo: Artemy Belyakov Mercutio: Dmitry Smilevsky Tybalt: Denis Savin
April 7th:
Juliet: Ekaterina Krysanova Romeo: Vladislav Lantratov Mercutio: Denis Zakharov Tybalt: Igor Pugachev
Very excited about some of the line-ups! I'm especially excited about Sevenard performing Juliet as well as the Kokoreva-Potaptsev pairing, and Krysanova-Lantratov will be lovely. But I'm not as crazy about Zakharova performing Juliet. I just don't see her as the youthful and sweet fourteen-year-old Juliet anymore. I know her and Krysanova are relatively similar in age, but for me I see Krysanova far more as Juliet. Still, it's Svetlana Zakharova, so I'm sure she'll pull it off.
Anyway, I'm very excited for this premiere!
P.S. Would love to see Vinogradova and Maymula as Juliet in this ballet at some point as well!

Ballet Asks Part Three Million
“Can’t wait for the livestream! I’m excited for pretty much all the segments for class to rehearsals to interviews. They probably chose lantratov after seeing him interview his colleagues on his Instagram. And thank god for a translator, google translate can only take me so far. For bolshoi’s rehearsal segment, have those dancers been filmed in past world ballet days?“
He was definitely really great during those interviews! I know that the classes are live broadcasted so there probably won’t be a translator/subtitles for those. The past two years the individual rehearsals have been pre-recorded and subtitles put on them, so I’m hoping they’ll do the same this year. As for dancers being filmed, I’m honestly not sure. I don’t remember them all, this is the seventh WBD broadcast!
“Honestly I’d be hyped beyond belief if Sevenard and Kokoreva debuted as Aurora....... I hope they get the chance to do so this season bc they’d both be incredible in this role... also when Kokoreva finally debuts as Swanhilda........”
I disagree, Aurora is an insanely difficult role and I’m not sure they’re ready for it, especially Kokoreva. This is not a hate comment on either of them, it’s a cautious comment that debuts need to come in time, not just on a whim when the dancers aren’t ready.
“Should Lantratov and Belyakov guest at the Mariinsky, which primas do you think would be the best match for them? Lantratov/Tereshkina in DQ or La Bayadere and Belyakov/Skorik in Swan Lake or Raymonda... I would like to see it 😍😍😍😍😍”
Lantratov and Tereshkina in Don Q would be AWESOME. I also think he would look good with Nadezhda Batoeva. As for Belyakov, I would love to see him in Raymonda with Ekaterina Kondaurova.
“Speaking of Kokoreva’s debut, thoughts on Putintsev? I’m surprised he’s getting so many chances given that he’s the exact opposite of the “ideal” body type, considering Vaziev’s tastes.... but he’s danced in at least three of BT broadcasts last year iirc (Jester in SL, Peasant Pas de Deux in Giselle, Raymonda Pas de Quatres) so that’s enough indication that management likes him, right????”
I very much enjoy the bits we’ve seen of him and I hope he continues to develop and gain roles in this manner: slowly and appropriately for his rank and abilities.

Went to go see the Bolshoi’s Giselle in theatres (live stream) and OMG I have feelings. I literally cannot move past the absolute phenomenon that I witnessed.
So obvi Olga and Arteym are like, amazing, but whooo boy they took it to a whole new level. Part of this was the choreography, but dammmnnnnn. SO Artyem is fully in romance mode - he is absolutely in love with Giselle. I love that he also seems to have a relationship with everyone in the village AND with Bertha - no one else does that that I know of. He’s not a new guy. He’s not aloof. He is in the village playing villager and totally in love. Giselle? Super energetic, playful, used to Loy’s flirtations, but trying to stay good. Also, totally humours her mother when she goes all mime you going to die. Also - she doesn’t get all sick in the middle which was cool. Bertha - LOVE all the mime. And OMG Bathilde. Gone is the super aloof I’m better than y’all rich lady. She instantly wants to be Giselle’s friend, wants to chat and learn about her, not like, let me humour this peasant. So when the betrayal comes, she is super concerned for Giselle and wants to help, but also she gets why Albrecht is so in love with her. I LOVE how a couple of times Albrecht tries to signal to everyone to not say anything (finger over the lips) which was interesting character-wise, but also that everyone just ignores him. So yeah.
Peasant Pas de Deux - Daria Khoklova and Alexei Putintsev. PHENOMENAL. One handed supported pirouettes THE ENTIRE TIME. At the end of the coda, they do this and Daria goes into a la seconde, one hand on her waist from the turn to this, doesn’t waver. It was beautiful. I liked the changes in choreography.
Myrtha ( Angelina Vlashinets). Frankly I hate the choreography for her. Its awkward and strange. However, acting wise - she got this. Stunningly cold. Lovely dancer, just hate the choreo.
Choreography in general, I really liked what Ratmansky did. The steps were both new, and old, probably closer to the original in some cases, or at least taking into consideration what it might have looked like. THE CROSS IN THE SECOND ACT OMG I LOVE. The second act had smaller changes, but in terms of acting, was so much more personal than scary apparitions. These were real women, tangible, with a force. They pulled Giselle and Albrecht away from each other, forced Hans around etc. Even Giselle was much more present than other productions where she is a shadow of herself. The pas de deux was less showy (no overhead lifts) and very pleading with Myrtha and the willis. It really was a battle for Albrechts life.
The ending, I was sobbing. She forgives Albrecht and tells him to go to Bathilde, and she appears at the very end, where Albrecht collapses into his servants arms, but reaches out to Bathilde and she seems to reach for him as well.
I still have SO many thoughts, so if anyone wants to nerd out together, PLEASE message me. I will not be over this performance for a very long time.
#thanks for coming to my ted talk#i love ballet but especially Giselle and I need to talk about it with someone.

Tchaikovskoye Gas Pipeline Operation Center celebrates 35th anniversary
February 26, 2018
A festive celebration of the 35th anniversary of the Tchaikovskoye Gas Pipeline Operation Center took place on February 22, 2018, at the Culture and Sports Center of Gazprom Transgaz Tchaikovsky.
The celebratory event was attended by Viktor Putintsev, Deputy Director General for Personnel Management at Gazprom Transgaz Tchaikovsky, Vladimir Levashov, Head of the Tchaikovskoye Gas Pipeline Operation Center, managers of the Tchaikovskoye cluster’s branches, Alexey Novikov, First Deputy Head of the Tchaikovsky District, Dmitry Shilov, Head of the Bolshoy Bukor rural settlement, heads of Tchaikovsky educational facilities and organizations, and employees and veterans of the Tchaikovskoye Gas Pipeline Operation Center.
Sergey Suslikov, Director General of Gazprom Transgaz Tchaikovsky, and Shamil Sharipov, Director General of Gazprom Transgaz Ufa, who had started his career at the Tchaikovskoye Gas Pipeline Operation Center, sent their video greetings to Tchaikovsky gas workers.
Performances by the ensembles from the company’s Culture and Sports Center were accompanied by congratulatory speeches addressed to the employees and veterans of the branch. Viktor Putintsev and Vladimir Levashov gave recognition letters and merit certificates to the most distinguished gas workers. Trade union activists were also recognized for their efforts.
“Let me express my profound gratitude to the veterans who laid the foundation of today’s operation center, to those who built and developed its infrastructure, created the team of professionals and trained their successors,” said Sergey Suslikov in his video greeting. “Many thanks to those currently working and showing excellent results. My message to young people: learn from the veterans and get the most out of it, as the future of our company is in your hands!”
Background
Gazprom Transgaz Tchaikovsky is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gazprom. Who do you consider as the most prominent young dancers both at the mariinsky and at the bolshoi?
Great question!
When I hear "prominent", I think of the dancers that the management sees as the most useful and important. So this is not my personal opinion on the best dancers, but what I think the theatres and public view as the most valued.
Mariinsky:
Maria Khoreva and Maria Ilyushkina are right now really seen as the future of the company. They both have the right height and proportions that the Mariinsky prefers. While Maria Ilyushkina seems to get more love from the older Russian balletomanes, Maria Khoreva is loved by the younger ballet fans.
Renata Shakirova is right now carrying so many shows, she performs almost everything and is depended on by management whether she's promoted or not
Nikita Korneyev is really being pushed as the young male star right now after Caixeta left, especially as a great partner for Ilyushkina
Bolshoi:
I would first list the five newly promoted principals, they're all young and really seem to be the future of the company: Elizaveta Kokoreva, Alyona Kovalyova, Eleonora Sevenard, Egor Gerashchenko, and Dmitry Smilevsky. But I would say out of these five especially Sevenard, Kokoreva, and Smilevsky are getting a lot of attention
Eva Sergeenkova has been pushed as the new star by Vaziev, even younger than the new principals. I would say to a lesser extent, Arina Denisova is being pushed too, though she hasn't been accepted as much by Russian balletomanes yet.
Alexei Putintsev is also really getting a lot of roles and has grown so much in the last few years. He's finally been promoted to First Soloist, but honestly could be a Leading Soloist, he's definitely important to the company as well.

Heyaaa do you think you can do the principal prediction list for Bolshoi male dancers? You know the one with “not if but when”, “who knows” categories?? Thank you~~~
i already know i’m going to regret posting this lol
disclaimer: since the bolshoi’s system of promoting male dancers tends to be way more delayed than their female one, i’m including dancers in the corps who have been getting management attention and generally dancers that i’m more familiar with. btw this list is full of my own bias as much as i try to be objective so take it with a grain of salt.
hindsight: 4 male principal positions will be open for grabs in the next 5 years.
NOT IF BUT WHEN (aka the 4 ‘replacements’)
jacopo tissi (premieres, debuts, broadcasts. he’s getting a lot of them. he’s also the epitome of a classical prince. one of vaziev’s favourites.)
egor gerashchenko (debuts in leading classical roles - textbook bolshoi ballet career trajectory to the principal rank. debuts in spartacus and ivan the terrible, so he’s expected to carry on the mantle of grigorovich ballets.)
david motta soares (well liked by moscow audience and management. has been getting big debuts left and right in all sorts of roles and ballets. could be a huge int’l PR boost as the first brazilian dancer to reach principal rank at the bolshoi. don’t see any reason why he wouldn’t reach the top.)
denis zakharov (objectively incredible as a classical dancer. his debuts and his jump from the corps to first soloist in his third season correspond with that.)
IF POSSIBLE
igor tsvirko (diverse, solid repertoire. a bit like a de facto principal well-liked by the moscow audience, but the main attention isn’t on him; a bit pigeonholed as a heroic dancer. also left for the hungarian national ballet for a bit (hmmmm.) will be 35 when savin retires. it really depends.)
ivan poddubnyak (sooooo many amazing classical debuts in his first season. became the talk of the BT scene after his exhilarating james debut. maybe i’m biased but he has the physique, the face, the technique, the stage presence AND he’s only 20. i don’t see why he can’t reach principal. he’s had 5 debuts in remarkable roles in his first season so far. putting him here bc of his age.)
dmitry smilevsky (he has everything he needs to reach the top rank, but he’s still so young and only debuted in a number of significant roles (like 5 in his first season so far, which is v impressive) so nothing’s for certain yet.)
WHO KNOWS
klim efimov (been debuting in big classical roles but it’s a slow-going process; i’m uncertain since BT has a lot of fresh male talent but he still has a chance. EDIT: okay ten seconds after posting this i am already doubting efimov’s placement lol. had vaziev not promoted savin, i would’ve put him in “babe it ain’t happening”.)
alexei putintsev (could be pigeonholed as a heroic/character dancer like tsvirko due to his height, he would have to work extraordinarily hard to earn their premier title.)
igor pugachev (same problem as putintsev since he doesn’t fit their exact image of a prince, but i’m willing to think anything is possible especially after savin’s promotion. he is still so young as well, there is time. i’m betting he would most likely be a leading soloist though.)
danila khamzin (among one of the fresh grads that have management attention, has a number of significant classical debuts but he has sort of been eclipsed by his peers whose careers have been more “fast-tracked” than his??? still too early to tell.)
mark chino (more or less the same with khamzin. honestly, he’s great. a few lovely, significant debuts. but considering that this is his fourth season and that his career has not been as “fast-tracked” as dancers younger than him, i’m putting him here. but still a lot of potential.)
BABE IT AIN’T HAPPENING
georgy gusev, dmitry dorokhov, mikhail kryuchkov (very much character soloists, do not have an extensive classical repertoire, already halfway through their careers)
artur mkrtchyan (standard resident soloist. don’t really see any upward mobility for him.)
kirill sokolovsky (really hyped by the VBA docu but don’t have the roles to show for it in his pro career. i would put him in ‘who knows’ bc of how he looks + vaziev’s general tastes and occasionally eccentric decisions + the fact that he’s still only in his second season, but he’s not on the same level with the others up there. plus i’ve already put too many people there yikes. still too early to tell tbh.)
WHEN HELL FREEZES OVER
vitaly biktimirov (amazing character artist, but age + semi-retired?)
karim abdullin (age, has his sights set on teaching?)
egor khromushin, anton savichev, alexander smolyaninov, alexander vodopetov, alexander fadeyechev, alexander vodopetov (age and/or not a classical dancer)
TLDR; vaziev promoting denis savin to principal at the age of 36 has caught me off guard so much that i keep doubting my own judgement.

Bolshoi Asks
I love your thoughts on bolshoi future promotions. A different take to that game: who do you feel will go from corps to soloists soon? My bet is Kokoreva. Also, contrary to what I initially thought I now feel Trikoz will stay in the corps for a while, they’re not giving her the exposure to make me think there is a promotion in the air.
Kokoreva for sure. I was never sold on Trikoz, she really can't seem to shake the ‘fresh graduate’ vibes in my opinion. She would suit the repertoire of Kovaleva due to physique similarities but doesn’t have the stability yet. I am intrigued by what I have seen of Vlada Zakharova, but she needs more opportunities and promotions. I am more curious about why the seem so reluctant to promote any men to soloists. There are currently only 6 male soloists compared to 15 female soloists. I think Alexei Putintsev, Mark Chino and Kim Elfimov should have been promoted after some impressive performances from all three.
Is it alleged that vaziev has preference towards students from vaganova or students with the long limbed aesthetic? At first I thought it was toward vaganova students but there are up and comers who are coming from bolshoi
IMO, the increase from Vaganova graduates was due to the lack of exceptional talent coming from the Bolshoi school. This drought, so to speak, caused Vaziev to look elsewhere for new talent. If you look back, there really has not been an exceptional female graduate from Bolshoi school the past 5-6 years until Kokoreva. The Mariinsky was also rather stagnant at the time (in terms of repertoire) so many top VBA grads were drawn to Moscow for a combination of better pay, better rep, and more soloist opportunities. A notable exception is someone like Kovaleva who was rejected from MT due to her height.
Vaziev certainly seems to like the long limbed aesthetic, there are numerous people doing well at BT without being so extremely skinny/ long proportions such as Sevenard, Tikhomirova Shrainer, Zhiganshina and even Kokoreva. Of course there are Krysanova and Nikulina too, but they weren’t promoted under Vaziev’s administration. I think that the Bolshoi is definitely more open to a ‘wider’ range of body types, especially when directly compared to the Mariinsky.
