♻@Regrann @el_tigrenegro - Today, March 9,1807, Alexandre Sabès Pétion was elected President of the Republic of Haiti. Following the assassination of Dessalines on October 17, 1806, Pétion championed the ideals of democracy and clashed with Henri Christophe who wanted absolute rule. Christophe went to the north with his followers and established an autocracy. Loyalties divided between them, and the tensions between the blacks and mulattoes were reignited. After the struggle dragged on to 1810, a peace treaty was agreed to and the country was split. In 1811 Christophe made himself king of the northern Kingdom of Haiti. Fearing a lack of political power, he turned his post into President for Life on October 9, 1816, going against his former beliefs. Initially a supporter of democracy, Pétion found the constraints imposed on him by the senate onerous and suspended the legislature in 1818. Pétion seized commercial plantations from the rich gentry. He had the land redistributed to his supporters and the peasantry, earning him the nickname Papa Bon-Cœur ("good-hearted father"). The land seizures and changes in agriculture reduced the production of commodities for the export economy. Most of the population became full subsistence farmers, and exports and state revenue declined sharply, making survival difficult for the new state. Believing in the importance of education, Pétion started the Lycée Pétion in Port-au-Prince. Petion's virtues and ideals of freedom and democracy for the world were strong, and he often showed support for the oppressed, Haiti became a refuge for escaped slaves. He gave sanctuary to the Simón Bolívar in 1815 and provided him with material and infantry support. This vital aid played a defining role in Bolivar's success in liberating the countries of what would make up Gran Colombia. Petion was influenced by his (and his successor's) lover, Marie-Madeleine Lachenais, who acted as his political adviser. Pétion named the general Boyer as his successor; he took control in 1818 following the death of Pétion from yellow fever. ▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃ #Negritude #PanAfricanism #Haiti #Ayiti #Alkebulan #AlexandrePetion #Petion #HaitianRevolution

🔵🌴🔴 @Regrann from @el_tigrenegro - Marie Sainte Dédée Bazile (fl. 1806), known as Défilée and Défilée-La-Folle, is counted as one of the symbols of the revolution. Dédée Bazile was born a slave and followed the army of Dessalines as a peddler, feeding soldiers and providing medical care. She became insane after having lost her sons during the Haitian Revolution and became a fanatic admirer of Dessalines, following him everywhere he went. After much resistance from the people to provide a proper burial, after his body was desecrated and disfigured, she gathered his remains in a sack and transported them to Cimetière Intérieur in Port-au-Prince to personally bury them. Dédée Bazile is regarded as one of the heroines of the revolution. ▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃ 💪 #Negritude #PanAfricanism #Haiti #Ayiti #Africa #Alkebulan #HenriChristophe #AlexandrePetion #Colonialism #Imperialism #JeanJacquesDessalines #HaitianRevolution #1stIndependentBlackNation #HaitianHistory101 #HaitianHeros #HaitiLives #HaitiWasBornInMe #LaDessalinienne #LunionFaitLaForce ✊🌍🌎✊ ▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃

🔵🌴🔴@Regrann from @el_tigrenegro - ↪ On this day in 1806, Jean-Jacques Dessalines was killed: Disaffected members of Dessalines' administration, including Alexandre Pétion and Henri Christophe, began a conspiracy to overthrow the Emperor. Dessalines was assassinated north of the capital city, Port-au-Prince, at Pont Larnage (now known as Pont-Rouge), on 17 October 1806 on his way to fight the rebels. His exact death circumstances are uncertain. Some historians claim that he was actually killed at Pétion's house at Rue l'Enterrement after a meeting to negotiate the power and the future of the young nation. Some reports say that he was arrested and was dealt a deadly blow to the head. Another report says he was ambushed and killed at first fire. ▨ ▨ Yet another account recalls the brutal attack of his men onto him. It says he was shot at twice and hit once. Then his head was split open by a saber's blow, to finally be stabbed three times by a dagger. "The tyrant is killed" was exclaimed from the crowd. The mob desecrated and disfigured his remains, which were abandoned on Government Square. A monument at the northern entrance of the Haitian capital marks the place where the Emperor was killed. After much resistance from the people to provide a proper burial, Défilée (Dédée Bazile), a black woman from a humble background, took the mutilated body of the Emperor to bury him. ▨ ▨ Although reviled by generations of Haitians for his autocratic ways, by the beginning of the 20th century, Dessalines began to be reassessed as an icon of Haitian nationalism. The national anthem of Haiti, La Dessalinienne, is named in his honor, as is the city of Dessalines. ▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃ #Negritude #PanAfricanism #Haiti #Ayiti #Africa #Alkebulan #HenriChristophe #AlexandrePetion #Colonialism #Imperialism #JeanJacquesDessalines #HaitianRevolution #1stIndependentBlackNation #HaitianHistory101 #HaitianHeros #HaitiLives #HaitiWasBornInMe #LaDessalinienne #LunionFaitLaForce ✊🌍🌎✊ ▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃

🌝🔵🔴 Happy Independence Day to #COLOMBIA. Respect to Bolivar for keeping his end of the deal. 👉 After many failed attempts to overthrow the Spanish army in Gran Colombia #SimonBolivar came to Haiti to meet with #AlexandrePetion who was the President of Haiti at the time and asked him for ammunition, rifles & strategic plans to fight the Spanish army. #PETION told #BOLIVAR he had no problem helping him with his request ONLY if he set the people of his country FREE from SLAVERY. BOLIVAR showed his gratitude by implementing the Blue and Red bicolor of the Haitian Flag upon the Colombian Flag.
