As Per Degaton falls through time in Justice Society of America (2022) #4, his first appearance in All-Star Comics (1940) #35 can be seen, as well as subsequent cover recreations from America vs. the Justice Society (1985) #4 and JSA (1999) #72. Interestingly enough, America vs. the Justice Society has long been counted as erased from continuity!
Art by Mikel Janin, Irwin Hasen, Jerry Ordway, and Alex Ross respectively.

I hope the U.S. loses against Sweden as the winner of U.S.-Sweden will have to go against Japan 😬

So I’ve seen the RWRB trailer and I have some thoughts…
I think it’s a lot more different to the book that what a lot of people are saying and so I personally don’t think it’s going to be a great book adaptation.
However, that could be because it’s not what I had imagined which always makes it harder to critique. I’m quite attached to the book and the characters, I have a tattoo that references the damn book, but I also studied film and had many ideas on how it would be adapted to the screen. A little bit messier and intimate, poetic and romantic (to do those letters justice) in cinematography and script, funny and ridiculous but still serious in the moments it’s needed, full of heart and (found) family, NORA AND JUNE, no shying away from the politics, the homophobia, the mental health talk (you can’t have the light without the dark), neurodivergent coded characters, adult in the sex way and swearing and queer as fuck: kimonos, queen, disaster/messy gays. But hey that’s how I've always imagined it and they can’t make the film fit everyone’s vision.
I will say that it’s campy, looks like a lot of fun, the actors have chemistry and it has a lot of the moments from the book that I’m looking forward to seeing. I’m probably going to enjoy it but I will mourn what was lost in translation. I worry that they’ve carved out the heart and soul of the book and we’ll just have a cheap imitation. I hope I’m wrong.
Again this is just my personal opinion, if you’re excited and happy after seeing the trailer I’m happy for you. I’m mostly making this for the people who were a bit disappointed like me.
#rwrb#rwrb trailer#What is going on with Uma Thurman’s accent#please tell me I’m not the only one who thought it was janky- Like its more deep southern American/Alabama than Texas#but I don't know I'm not from America#also I can't with the Brexit joke#“Dear Alex I miss you” vs “Should I tell you that when we’re apart your body comes back to me in dreams?"#cowboy hats instead of kimonos???

there are a lot of fun lil things to catch up and enjoy and shout out so think of this as my lil newsletter of the week :)
been a lot of great discussions on the rest is entertainment recently! a few i recommend: 1) in this ep richard discusses the former () importance of the edinburgh fringe and how the pipeline standup>stage>stardom has completely changed with the popularisation of social media and the instant delivery of topical comedy (loved the vittorio shoutout!); 2) in this recent ep (8:17) richard talks about the integrity and motivations of professional tv quizzers, like those on the chase; and 3) in this another recent ep (20:33) richard passionately criticises the emmys allowing the bear to compete as a comedy series and yet again stands up for out-of-work as well as underappreciated comedy writers

The Terrans fucking around and finding out that separating the sparklings from the carrier is a death sentence wasn't on my bingo card, but a reality check is needed for them.
I imagine someone returning them to Starscream in time and him running away, no one can find him
I mean, it makes sense. They're young and have such a black and white idea of good vs bad. Starscream is Bad, therefore taking his babies away so he can't raise them to be Bad too is a Good thing. They don't know that the sparklings are doomed to waste away and destabilize without their carrier.
And, to be honest... they live in america. America loves to take children from their parents, especially if said parents are disenfranchised in any way, shape, or form. The decepticons have been painted as monstrous villains in earth media for the last 40 years. They kill just to kill, they're evil just for the sake of being evil. They've been given ample time to change. The best thing they can do for these sparklings is to separate them from their creator's negative influence and raise them with love and care. Love and care that their Bad Evil Mother would surely never be able to give them 🙄
Thankfully, Dorothy and Alex aren't convinced. They take care of the terrans ok, but they were born fully autonomous and able to fluently communicate. The newborn twins are not that: they're a lot more delicate, the only way they can express their needs or emotions is to cry and scream, and magic cave water is not gonna cut it to keep them fed.
Dot and Alex tell the kids firmly that no, they can't adopt these babies. They don't have the means to care for them. They insist that the bots take over as their primary caregivers, and they don't know that the sparklings were kidnapped from their mother. They're under the impression that the bitties' parents abandoned them to leave on Prowl's ship.
Methinks it's probably Dot that lets Starscream out. She's a mom, too. She happens upon him in the base, banging himself off the wall over and over again in a haze, clawing and begging to people that can't hear him, crying for his sparklings. Yelling at the autobots that, "They NEED ME! I can feel them, they're dying! Please... give me back my sparklings!"
When she finds out the truth, she's plainly horrified. She'd seen the twins earlier, and they didn't look good. Lying together in a huddled, miserable lump, whining, shivering, cowering away from the bots but too weak to even crawl away. She doesn't entirely understand sparks and how they work, but a rushed, desperate explanation from Starscream gets the general gist of it across. She lets him out and he doesn't even squish her, just stumbles out of his cell and makes a beeline toward his bitties, murder in his optics and willing to do whatever he must to get them back

this past week (october 1-7) was banned books week. last year, censors targeted a record 2,571 unique titles, a 38% increase from the 1,858 unique titles targeted for censorship in 2021. the majority of these titles were written by or about members of the LGBT community, Black people, Indigenous people, and other people of color.

recently, back in July, we saw Mississippi ban Hoopla & Overdrive for people under the age of 18, restricting young people's right to read and their access to library resources. this is likely going to continue as more parents lobby for "parent's rights" (aka the right to treat their children as property) and pressure school boards to remove certain books from the education system.
but there are people that are pushing back against these restrictions: Leah Johnson, author of You Should See Me in a Crown, has spoken out vocally against book banning as well as her experiences as a Black queer woman. she's also opened her own bookstore, Loudmouth Books in Indianapolis, which will be a haven and spotlight for marginalized voices and controversial literature.
George Johnson, author of All Boys Aren't Blue, has joined the PEN America vs. Escambia County School District to challenge the removal and restrictions of books from school libraries within Escambia County, Florida.
There are also multiple library systems across the country that have joined the Books Unbanned program, which offers free digital library cards to anyone age 13-21.
Brooklyn Public Library: ages 13-21, anywhere in the U.S.
Seattle Public Library: ages 13-26, anywhere in the U.S.
Los Angeles County Public Library: ages 13-18, California only
Boston Public Library: ages 13-26, anywhere in the U.S.
[source]
a lot of these book bans claim to be for the "safety" of children, but that is simply not true. these book bans target LGBT literature and Black literature indiscriminately. this does not protect children, it endangers the most vulnerable of them.
Gender Queer, by Maia Kobabe, was the top banned book in 2022. You can find the author here, where e reflects extensively about the current book bannings & advocates for children's right to read as well as the rights of other banned book authors.
Some of the other most banned books of this past year also include (in no particular order):
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
This Book Is Gay by Juno Dawson
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
Sold by Patricia McCormick
Maus: A Survivor's Tale by Art Spiegelman
Lawn Boy by Jonathan Evison
Melissa by Alex Gino
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Push by Sapphire
at the end of this banned books week, we should continue the conversation and support for marginalized authors and diverse literature, especially for children, in schools & libraries. get involved at your own local library, talk to your children or your siblings or your nieces and nephews, attend their school board meetings, and contact your representatives and speak out against book censorship.

Evidently, Victor Ireland just gave an interview on the Lunar Remastered Collection in which…some claims were made, apparently. I haven’t listened to it personally, so I’m going to post this summary from Robert Boyd of Zeboyd Games (Cosmic Star Heroine etc.). Boyd is trustworthy, but reminder, given past history: please take everything Ireland claims with a grain of salt.
Summary of what I’ve heard so far: Vic Ireland has been trying to get the rights to rerelease the Lunar games for years. Vic has offered to license the original English translations/voices/recordings for cheap for the new collection, but radio silence. Hasn’t heard back from them. The Sega CD mini - Vic was contacted in advance for Lunar licensing. Vic offered to not only license it but also include a free patch that changed the font so it wasn’t all caps. Vic wanted a royalty (a few dimes per unit). They wanted to pay Vic a small one-time fee that he felt was insulting. He thinks they were expecting more demand in Japan and that they budgeted more money for the Japanese side of things and that other regions were more of an afterthought. Would love to include more extras - he’s got audition tapes, he’s got outtakes that haven’t been heard, etc. Complaining about LRG and how if they do a special edition, it wouldn’t be done as well as something he could do. Doesn’t feel like they have a great track record. Doesn’t want to make a bad situation for Gungho. Don’t want to pressure them. Just letting people know that he’s willing to help and willing to license the stuff he has if they contact him. Mentions Cosmic Fantasy and how the new release is inferior to the Working Designs version. Later versions of Lunar didn’t sell as well as the Working Designs versions. The latest version of Vay was done on their own and didn’t use the WD localization or improvements. Doesn’t think there will ever be a proper Lunar sequel, because Studio Alex was sued out of existence. Some of the people involved are still around, but the team is broken. Saw a document with some basic Lunar 3 ideas, but it never got produced. [Note from indigozeal, not Boyd: I don’t know whether this is the Lunar 0 treatment that Kei Shigema currently wants to produce or not.] Vic says that Phantasy Star 4 coming out on cartridge in US is because of him. Sega of America rejected it, Working Designs tried to license it, and then Sega of Japan said that if WD wants it, why isn’t SoA doing it? And then SoA was mad about being forced to release it so they overpriced it. And Vic made some enemies at SoA then. Ubisoft was doing a version of Lunar, they were just using the WD script because they thought GA owned the rights. At the last minute, they realized they didn’t so GA purchased script rights from Vic, which have been used as a base in future Lunar releases. Vic retained rights to voice performances.
ETA: There's an expanded edition of the notes in this thread, though Tumblr freaks out if I try to post it, plus some folks already poking holes in various claims (such as that it makes no sense to hold out for royalties vs. a lump sum payment on a limited-edition product that has a built-in sales ceiling).
#lunar#lunar games#lunar series#lunar dragonmaster#phantasy star#oh my god that phantasy star claim#it sounds both like something ireland would make up and something stupid enough to be true#although i'm filing it as the former for now#if it is the latter#well#we dodged a major bullet
