Top 10 "13 Reasons Why" Characters

I am focusing mainly on the main cast and characters that I feel made a big enough impact on the show as a whole. Where I rank them isn’t solely based on how much I like them. Some instances will also be based on how well I feel the actor portrays them. However controversial that might be at times.

1. Tony Padilla

Tony just oozes cool, to me. I loved him from the moment I saw him. His car, awesome. His leather jacket, also awesome. His hair and style, great. His humor and overall characterization were great to me as well. I think we can all agree, we need a friend like Tony in our lives! I was always rooting for my boy!

2. Justin Foley

This one is a weird one. I spent most of season one thinking Justin was such a jerk. His friends were jerks, his actions that led to his tape also made him a jerk. But, by the time the series ended, I absolutely loved the guy! My heart hurt for him, man. He was done so wrong!

3. Clay Jensen

Clay was an interesting character. I can’t quite place it but, I have love/hate feelings towards him. Especially as the series progresses. Yes, dude went through some seriously terrible stuff in his young life. But he turned into a bit of a douche. I was glad to see him seemingly riding off into a happier life, though. Sadly, his demons will always be with him.

4. Hannah Baker

Hannah’s story was just sad altogether. But we all know that already. In terms of character, I liked her. I could relate in some ways. Being a former victim of immense bullying, I totally understood her thought process. Though I didn’t have exactly what happened to her, happen to me, I was certainly a victim of harsh rumors like she was. It takes a huge toll on a young girl’s mind. The tape thing was a little much, though...

Sadly, we didn't get enough time with her for me to truly grow with her, so I put her lower on this list than I wanted to.

5. Bryce Walker

Say what you will about Bryce the character, but the actor did such an amazing job at portraying such a despicable, yet somewhat understandable character. Especially as the series progresses. At times I found myself questioning if I should hate him, or feel bad for him. He was definitely NOT a good guy in any sense of the word. But I give Justin Prentice all the credit on this one! I like a good 'heel".

6. Alex Standall

Alex is awkward and quiet. And he definitely struggled a lot in the show. 13 Reasons Why never shied away from dark themes and Alex was just one of many that got hurt a lot. My really felt for him. Especially early on.

7. Jessica Davis

I have never really been able to decide what exactly it is that I feel about Jessica. I liked her, but also found her to be a bit too uptight and bratty at times. In season one especially. But, that's the point. She was the spoiled daddy’s girl type. I began to sympathize with her more as the show progressed, though.

8. Zach Dempsey

I didn’t think much one way or another about Zach. For much of the show he was the jock stereotype. I liked seeing his more sensitive sides, though. And I especially love the slight bromance he and Clay would later have.

9. Tyler Down

We’ve all known someone like Tyler. Someone really on the outside of every group in high school. Someone you’d see off on their own, and usually the target of many of the jock’s attacks. Seeing how this would impact Tyler throughout the show just broke my heart into a million pieces. I particularly loved how the actor portrayed him in the later seasons. He got really real, and really raw. His talent showed in his performance.

10. Ani Achola

I just don’t have a clue what I think of Ani. I didn’t feel she was needed really. I mean, I guess they needed someone to come in and humanize Bryce a bit and give Clay a new love interest. But her and Clay just didn[‘t do it for me. They had some cute moments together. And I have nothing against the character per se. I just couldn’t connect with her as much.

Let’s be real here, we’ve all had things to say about 13 Reasons Why for one reason or another. Still, for all the controversy that has surrounded the show ever since it first dropped back in 2017, they definitely have delivered some gems over the years. One of them is the relationship between Alex Standall and Charlie St. George. 

In the spirit of celebrating this adorable couple, we’d like to invite fans and creators to participate in the upcoming CHALEX WEEK 2020!

Wait, what? Yes, you read that right. 

When?? Chalex Week will kickstart on the 27th of July and end on the 2nd of August. 

How do I participate? Are cookies involved?? We’ve compiled an extensive list of themes for the fandom to vote on. You can vote for 6, and the themes with the most votes will be used during the week--day 7 will be free, so surprise us!

The last day to vote will be Tuesday, the 21st of July. 

Themes will be announced the day after: Wednesday, the 22nd of July. So don’t forget to check back!

Thoughts on 3x13 “Let the Dead Bury the Dead”

So, this was... messy.

I am not going to write anything on Monty right now because I want to sort out my thoughts first.

So it was Alex. And Jess, kind of. And they framed Monty for it. And the police just agreed with Ani that of course it had to be Monty. I will have to watch the whole season again at some point and take notes, but right now my impression is that there are a lot of plot holes.

What Ani said to Clay, “All the choices were wrong,” feels like something that was said at some point in the writing room when they were trying to get out of the mess they’d created, lol.

I did love that they all stood together to protect each other ♥

That Zalex scene was wonderful, and so was the one between Alex and his dad. I hope Alex is going to get help now because he’s clearly struggling a lot.

Bryce’s tape. I believe that, if he’d heard the tapes Hannah made back during S1, his reaction to them would have been fundamentally different. The writers wanted to show that people can change, that they can become better. I think they did that, although some parts of Bryce’s growth (I’m not sure just yet if I want to call it a redemption arc) could have been written better IMO. Am I sorry he died? Yes, both because Justin Prentice is an amazing actor and will be missed in S4, and because I don’t believe anyone deserves to die. But I think I said the same thing before watching the season, too, so... However, I do believe that he changed for the better and I do wish we would have gotten to see what he could have become. Monty, too.

The Thanksgiving scenes gave me all the feels ♥ Tony and Caleb, the Jensens, the Standalls. I’m not sure why Jess was with Alex, but okay, lol. I wish they’d included a Dempsey family dinner.

Justin telling the truth about his drug use and asking for help for everything ♥

Ani’s mother staring down Clay, and then basically telling them she knew they were dating even when Clay himself didn’t know was quality stuff, lol.

The moment at Monet’s with Tyler’s pictures was really sweet. It had a vague S2 finale vibe, and it fit really well with one of the main themes of the season, that people need other people. It was really lovely to see how many people Tyler has on his side now, especially considering how lonely he was when the series started.

I think I’m looking forward to seeing how all their secrets and cover-ups get out in S4.

Monty has a mother! That sign in Spanish, in prison, is grammatically incorrect. Not really surprised (I am totally deflecting here, commenting on the actual scene is too hard)

He is! Clay is good!

Clay! That is what you do! You show up every day and try to make it better. He might’ve learned that life is fucked, but he certainly didn’t learn that he shouldn’t help anyone. And it’s so nice that it’s been acknowledged.

(In my D/s AU that I write in my head, Ani and Clay don’t work because they are both Doms. They have their moments, but there is not enough compatibility to make it work long term)

If they make it out reasonably well, I see gags in Jess and Justin future. Jess really doesn’t like it when Justin talks during sex. (I’m sorry, I just can’t get over that Domme Jess and sub Justin are canon)

Tyler, at least, it’s going to be OK. He is almost smiling in that last picture.

What did you do, Alex? I don’t actually think it was killing Bryce.

Oh, Caleb. You are such a sweetheart.

Justin seems like a functioning heroin addict. Is there such a thing? Just something else to research later.

I didn’t noticed before, but Monty’s not boyfriend is hot!

I actually like that in this season, everybody is human. Nobody is a complete monster.

And the killer is... come on! Enough of this! I just want to home who it was so we can move along to fixing it!

Oh, fuck fuck fuck. This is awful. And it was Alex. Poor Alex. Poor Jessica. I won’t go as far as poor Bryce, but I do wish he’d had the chance to live the rest of his life, a long life, regretting what he did. He could’ve actually done some good.

Wow. They went si far as setting Monty up. Even an adult is on it.

Wow. I did not see that one coming. I am actually sad. But it is a nice ending.

Acknowledgement. Accountability. Taking responsibility. The theme of the season. Would Bryce had made it? Sadly, we’ll never know. Does this make everything easier or harder for everyone? I don’t know.

Can’t we just wave a magic wand and make them OK? Justin no longer has an addiction, him and Jessica are miraculously free of any trauma.

Father-son scene! I love the parents of this show. They try so hard, but their kids make it so difficult! Just see what detective Standall does for his kid. What the Jensens do for their kids, including a kid they knew for like a week before taking him in. Arturo Padilla accepting his son. As fucked up as this show is, the family connections are really touching and loving 🥰

“Father please bless and keep safe our children. All of our children. Their world is darker than ours. And Father forgive us for what we’ve done for making it that way”. And there it is again. Taking responsibility.

Of course Justin is already eating! Lol. The Catholic Church is actually not that judgmental of gay people, in my experience, but you have to respect Tony and Caleb’s views.

Caleb is such a sweetheart (I know, si am repeating myself, but he is)

Yes! Asking for help! That is the first step. Justin might actually be OK.

MxM Fandom and OC Roleplay Search!

Hullo, everyone.  I haven’t been on this blog in quite some time, but I find myself in desperate need for a roleplay.  I often have a lot of free time on my hands, but within the next week, I’m babysitting a seven month old who loves to nap and leave his Auntie Haley EXTREMELY BORED.

I prefer to roleplay over Discord, as I find it extremely convenient for plotting and chatting OoC.  I have a Kik, as well, and could be convinced to use Google Docs even though it makes me feel old and stupid lmao.

If interested, the important stuff is under the cut!

I’m 25 and have roughly 14 years of roleplay experience under my belt.  That being said, I really don’t mind how long you’ve been roleplaying - I’m a strong believer in quality over quantity.  The amount that I write is based entirely on what’s happening in the plot, but I range typically from 2-8 paragraphs. 

I ask that my partner is 18+ because though smut isn’t necessary, I do enjoy it from time to time.

I don’t do established romance; I’m sorry, but I find it boring and tedious.  I love angst, slowburn, and dark themes but also enjoy fluff and romance when it isn’t the sole driving factor behind the plot.

Hello! Due to some really rough events this month, my beta and I have missed the traditional one-a-day pattern for the Kinktober challenge. Buuut, I think you guys may appreciate the depth and care of each chapter (I’m still going to call them “Days”).

Tastes can be particular, but this collection will start tame (explicit) and will (dramatically) increase in kinkiness. Please read the chapter names to find what interests you. (1) (different anon here) I agree we need more back story on the characters it's one thing that annoys me the most about this show. I also hope we get to see Alex in the hospital and how his parents coped and how he coped when he woke up and his therap etc but I doubt that will happen. I also agree it was most likely a fresh start for Alex that brought the family to town, I also feel that's why Bill pushed his son to make friends and worried he only had friends that were girls

(2) Not that having friends that were girls was a bad thing to him it just felt that he didn’t have friends and he needed friends cause he worried his son was being bullied again as before and he didn’t realise the rffect he would have on his son feeling like his dad didn’t accept him etc when it was a totally different to his dad :( But then I also feel like Alex wouldn’t talk about being bullied or admit it like he did before he shot himsrlf this time

(3) You know? So how did they find out if he was being bullied? How bad was it for Alex? He had stomach pains etc was it all connected? Did they notice things like now with the staying in the cinema past the movie etc cause they didn’t this time round? Wouldn’t it make them see all those signs knowing?—

I find the lack of backstory details frustrating but, at the same time, I like it because we can fill in the blanks however we want.  But yeah, there are scenes from the five-month gap in between S1 and S2 I would love to see.

It makes so much sense that Bill would worry about Alex not having any friends, especially if Alex was bullied at his old school. (To be fair, if Bill’s job was the reason they moved, it would still make sense: He would feel guilty about moving Alex away from his old friends.) I think Bill’s own high school experience was a good one. He probably had a lot of fun with his (male) friends and so he wants Alex to experience the same. He seems to genuinely love and care about Alex, so I’m sure his concerns come from a good place.

Alex’s insecurities, anxiety and age make him believe his father doesn’t accept him. :( So sad!

Like you said, I doubt Alex would say anything to his parents if he was being bullied. I think his parents might not have known. Alex was probably standing up to his bullies and getting into fights every single day, and that might be why his parents moved away? They knew there was a problem, they just didn’t know exactly what the problem was. I also don’t think his parents were aware of his mental health problems or they would have kept a closer eye on him. (Which they do in S2, when they know Alex is at risk.)

Throughout S1 we see Alex exhibit signs of depression and being suicidal - but most (all?) of them happen outside the house, away from his parents' eyes. Bill catches him driving recklessly, but we can't really blame him for not realizing it was more than just "boys being boys" since it was only one time (that we know of.) (I still think Alex should've been punished more sternly for that since reckless driving is extremely dangerous regardless of the reason but that's a whole other thing. I would've taken away his car privileges and grounded him for a month.)

Honestly, when I watched the show for the first time, I missed the signs completely and I know I'm not the only one. Suicide is the main theme of the show (or at least of S1) so it was definitely on my mind, and I saw all the ways in which Alex was struggling, but I blamed it on the stress from the tapes. If his parents noticed a change in behaviour, they had every reason to think it was about Hannah's death.

His mom is a nurse, his dad a cop. I think both of them have at least some training/knowledge in regards to suicide? And for sure the school sent out emails after Hannah's death. But: life is messy, we all have so many things going on at the same time, it's easy/normal/human to assume everything's fine.

This is probably the scariest part. The show does a really good job in talking about it, especially in S2 with the Bakers and the trial. I think Alex's parents will always feel guilty that they didn't notice. Bill says he feels guilty because it was his gun, but I think this is just what he believes / what tells himself: that it's about the gun and not about missing the signs, because the former is somehow easier to accept (and to fix) than the latter. Carolyn, instead, is clearly trying to make up for it by controlling every aspect of Alex's life: what he does (bedroom door open, staying home rather than going back to school, etc.), what he eats, what he knows (his suicide note, the trial, etc.)

Both the Standalls and the Bakers are good parents. They're not perfect and they make mistakes, but they are good parents. They could have noticed. In a better world, they would have. They didn't. :(

(As for his stomach pains, I do think it was all connected. I also think they realized it only after his suicide attempt. I doubt Alex himself knew they were anxiety-related. He mentions seeing several doctors but none of them was able to figure out what was wrong with him. If he knew, he didn't say anything.)
