Artemis' expression remained nonplussed. The Irish criminal mastermind had made a bit of a name for himself. As such, he knew who was watching him. Mainly The People-- but on occasion a human organization would have the gumption to try and investigate him. All they'd ever found was a boy who saved his father and grew into a rather respectable teenager. Flawless academic performance, sharp wit, and perhaps some social ineptitude. But a criminal? Far from it. He had removed himself from his father's shadow, at least publicly. Artemis Sr. deciding to go legitimate only assisted in this cover. "Is that so? it had been pure luck that alex had bumped into james sprintz a few weeks ago. it had been even luckier that james had remembered alex despite being two years past the mess at point blanc academy. they'd gotten caught up , and james had gotten a furrow in-between his eyebrows when he'd heard about what alex had been doing since he " retired " as a spy. he'd made an offer to help.

now , two weeks later , alex was enrolled in a school with a cover that was super thin under a different last name , but money talked enough that no one seemed to care.

well , no one than artemis fowl.

alex isn't sure why it seemed like fowl had such a grudge against him , but all alex wanted to do was pass calculus without getting into trouble.

alex's instincts go on high alert when fowl calls him by his real last name , and he wonders if there's a reason why fowl seemed to know him. he was pretty sure he hadn't ever come up against anyone that fowl would have known ... he was rich , though , and he knows that some rich people have similar circles. maybe he knew a point blanc kid ?

still wouldn't explain the hostility ...

Alex was serious, because of course he was. “I’m a spy, Tom. My job is being able to put on a face and maintain it no matter what comes my way and fulfill my mission.”

Fulfill his mission that was something else that bothered him. “and what was your mission?”

“Protect Aria Sharpova”

“From what?”

Alex looked uncomfortable “We didn’t know exactly who…”

“From what Alex.” He already knew the answer but he needed to hear it from him.

“Assassination” he finally said, so softly that Tom missed it behind the hum of the refrigerator.

His mind went blank. He knew it was that. Had guessed that was “Sprintz’s” mission while he was lying on the floor hiding from a sniper . But it was different when it was Alex because it had been him shielding her with his body and it had been him who requested he be there in the first place. “You asked for me to get placed in the middle of an assassination attempt.”

Alex winced “I just asked that you be put in the project. Jones had you placed in our group.”

“What? As some kind of test for you?”

“No. We had to have a normal group size and you were a known quantity. We couldn’t exactly trust anyone to not be compromised.”

“That’s fucking stupid we’re just teen...” he began but trailed off. Bit dense of him to think that being a teen would change anything given he had spent 5 days sitting next to a teenage spy.

Alex‘s arched eyebrow said that he agreed. “Tom, the whole reason I was there was because I was trained at Malagosto. Me being her age was a perk. ” And yeah there was that. It was easy to forget about Alex’s “training”. Mainly because Alex tried to forget it about himself. “Look I’m sorry you got caught up in everything. I really thought I could keep you safe.”

James: (horrified) So they just force you into deadly situations?

Alex: People like them are used to getting their way.

James: Funny. My family's the same way. (Whips out his phone and starts texting)

i have no creative capacity so you’re getting more shitty aus and this one is a university au where james sprintz (waaaay back from point blanc i barely remember him as I write this) goes to study in london with some other miscellaneous pb buddies and they kept in touch or whatever to help each other recover from the trauma.

their very rich families also decided that their kids need protection and so there are like 5 people following these irresponsible young adults around and they generally manage to shake most of them off but there are two that they don’t manage and one is a quiet russian man and the other is a slighter younger black guy with vitiligo and james calls up alex one day is like ‘hey man im in london you wanna meet up’ and alex is like ‘okay’ and that’s the story of how alex rider foud out that yassen faked his death.

One bit of the Alex Rider TV show which I think is going to be different from the books, and that I’m totally here for, is the merrie band that seems to be forming at Point Blanc? Alex is so isolated as a hero, and that’s part of what makes him so tragic and makes headcanons where he has friends hit so hard, but it’s time. Give the boy some friends. James Sprintz was a great character and I’d be really happy to see him get more development, and a few more kids join the gang as well.

Fic Rec: Control

Prompt: We know Nile and Wolf’s greatest fears, what is Alex’s

Characters: Alex Rider and James Sprintz

Rating: Teen

I know I don’t typically rec because there are so many fics out there that I truly do love and appreciate and wouldn’t want to leave any off. However, this fic which admittedly is a gift fic is one I simply have to.

It’s a perfectly paced look into Alex’s life a few years in the future as he tries to spend time with people his age featuring causal spy work, action, and the perfect amount of angst as he slowly finds himself out of his depth coupled with a harsh reality check from an unlikely source. Truly a work of art that I’ve read over and over again and caught details I’ve missed.
