They’re saying aloud what they once whispered behind closed doors. Back in 2016, when he was a Republican congressman but not yet House speaker, Kevin McCarthy said in a private meeting with GOP leaders, “There’s two people, I think, Putin pays: [Representative Dana] Rohrabacher and Trump … swear to God.” (Rohrabacher, once dubbed “Putin’s favorite congressman,” lost his seat in 2018.)

McCarthy, confronted with the leaked audio in 2017, claimed it was a joke. But anyone paying attention to how Russian intelligence services run influence operations—which I do, as a former CIA officer—knows it is anything but. It raises a legitimate, and deadly serious, question: Have Russian operatives paid any Republican officials?

Consider the news last week that authorities in several European countries had uncovered a vast corruption network, in which European politicians were paid to spread anti-Ukraine and pro-Russia propaganda. The network...was orchestrated by pro-Russia Ukrainian oligarch Viktor Medvedchuk. Politicians from Germany, France, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Hungary were allegedly paid directly with cash or through cryptocurrency exchanges. [...] It is naïve to think the same pattern does not exist in the United States, given the ample evidence of coordinated pro-Russian talking points from several Republican politicians. Just this week, Marjorie Taylor Greene spoke to Steve Bannon about Ukraine’s persecution of Christians, which is a Kremlin talking point aimed at boosting the pro-Moscow wing of Ukraine’s Orthodox Church. The U.S. should be spending money on the border with Mexico, not on Ukraine aid? That’s a Kremlin talking point. Russia invaded Ukraine to defend itself against an expanding NATO? That’s a Kremlin talking point. Call for a cease-fire, and give Russia Crimea and eastern Ukraine? That’s a Kremlin talking point.

While we cannot say for sure if any Republican officials are on the Russian payroll in ways similar to their European counterparts, we can be sure that they’ve been approached. As the director of national intelligence wrote in 2021, Russian intelligence operatives and their proxies “sought to use prominent US persons and media conduits to launder their narratives to US officials and audiences. These Russian proxies met with and provided materials to Trump administration-linked US persons to advocate for formal investigations; hired a US firm to petition US officials; and attempted to make contact with several senior US officials. They also made contact with established US media figures.”

As for payments, we’ve seen a disturbing pattern. In 2017, Andrew Intrater donated $250,000 to Trump’s inauguration fund and, a few months later, donated $35,000 to Trump’s reelection campaign. Intrater is a cousin of Viktor Vekselberg, a Russian oligarch who was sanctioned by the U.S. in 2018 for his connections to Putin. We know that oligarchs play an integral role in funding Russian influence operations. One oligarch revealed to special counsel Robert Mueller that Putin held quarterly meetings with his oligarchs to discuss strategic spending.

In 2018, a Texas-based firm donated money to House Speaker Mike Johnson. That firm is 88 percent owned by three Russians. And last week, we learned that Trump Media received loans from a Russian bank to help the company stay afloat before it went public and at a time when no U.S. bank would lend to Trump.

Any donations that might have been made through anonymous LLCs to PACs—perhaps with attached quid pro quos—are likely to remain opaque, due to the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. [...]  Among the entities promoted by the Voice of Europe propaganda network was Hungary’s Center for Fundamental Rights, which “considers preserving national identity, sovereignty, and Judeo-Christian social traditions as its primary mission.” CFR is funded by the government of Viktor Orbán and has twice organized a conference in Budapest for the Conservative Political Action Committee, which helps shape policy on the American right. The Heritage Foundation—which has spearheaded Project 2025, the authoritarian blueprint for a future Republican administration—has become increasingly cozy with Hungary, and even hosted Orbán privately last month. It is quite possible, perhaps even likely, that some people who are on the Russian payroll were at the Heritage event, their role to influence and build support for pro-Russian policies.

“I didn’t know Alex would ask me that question, but I’m glad they gave me a chance to respond.

Really, the oddest reaction was from America itself.

Folks acted as if they were shocked this was happening 50 years ago and not centuries ago.

Wake up.

It was in the ’80s when Al Campanis, general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, uttered on national TV that Blacks lacked “the necessities" to be general managers or managers in the game.

It was in the early ’90s in Los Angeles when Rodney King was brutally beaten by police officers on the city streets and every officer was acquitted.

It was in the mid-’90s in Vero Beach, Florida, when an apartment complex refused to allow a reporter’s two black children to swim in its community swimming pool.

It was in the past five years that George Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis, Breonna Taylor was shot and killed in her bedroom in Louisville, and Ahmaud Arbery was murdered jogging in Georgia.

So, really, we’re shocked that Jackson couldn’t eat in restaurants, sleep in hotels and hang in country clubs with his white teammates 57 years ago?

Welcome to America.

Racism still flourishes in this country, but the only difference, as Hank Aaron once told me, “the difference back then is that they had hoods. Now, they have neckties and starched shirts."

“In the South," Jackson said, “you knew they didn’t like you. You knew they didn't want you. They didn’t hide it."

Now, racism may not be as overt, but as Jackson reminded the country this week, don’t be naive to think it has gone away, or even greatly diminished.

Oh, and just in case you needed a reminder, there are only two Black managers in baseball, one Black general manager and there still has never been a majority Black owner. Jackson said Saturday he still is incensed the he was denied the opportunity to bid on the Oakland Athletics in 2005 when it was sold to John Fisher.

So, you really believe things have changed?

“I am glad,’’ Jackson said, “that I said what I did. It needed to be said."

And repeated over and over again.

Bears Roll Past Bruins, 36-7

Cal Remains Undefeated in XVs Action This Season

BERKELEY – California rugby continued its unbeaten streak in XVs action as the Golden Bears collected a 36-7 win over UCLA Saturday afternoon in Berkeley. Five tries were scored by as many Cal players in the victory and Cormac Saint went 4-for-5 on conversion attempts and added a penalty kick to lift the Bears to victory.   "UCLA was stout that entire match, credit to them," Cal Head Coach Jack Clark said. "I thought the players from both teams delivered a good contest. The 30-plus penalties between the two teams chopped the match up a bit, but it was a beautiful day in Strawberry Canyon."   Cal's strong set piece led to the first score of the day, when the Bears won an attacking lineout and mauled it in. Cade Crist carried the ball past the tryline from the back of the maul to give Cal the lead seven minutes into the contest.   The Bears remained on the attack and seven minutes later, Rand Santos managed a gap around the 50-meter line and stepped past all of UCLA's defenders to dot down a score in the corner of the tryzone.   Another breakaway run set up Cal's third try, when Oliver Newall maneuvered the ball into scoring territory before offloading to Emmett Cook on the wing. Cook's speed sent him well past the last Bruin defender and he touched it down between the posts to extend the Bears' lead. Just as the first half came to an end, Cal was awarded a penalty and took three more points off Saint's boot to make it 24-0 at the break.   Cal stayed on the attack and struck early in the second period. The forward pack grinded out a few phases before sending the ball out to Jack Byszio on the wing to touch down another Bear try.

The Bruins worked their way into Bear territory after the restart, and Cal drew a yellow card penalty as UCLA inched towards the tryline. Just a few meters out from the tryzone, the Bears managed to stop the Bruins, despite being a man down, and get a turnover to regain possession. Cal worked back down the field within striking distance of the UCLA tryzone but drew another yellow card to leave only 13 men out on the pitch. Cal continued to string together a series of attacking phases and eventually found an open Max Threlkeld who added another try to the scoresheet.   Cal was on UCLA's tryline several more times without scoring, turning over the ball once and being penalized on a few other instances. With only three minutes left in the contest, UCLA worked down into Cal territory and won an attacking lineout just outside the 5-meter line. After a few phases, the Bruins inched across the tryline for their only score of the day.   Cal returns to Witter Rugby Field next weekend for two matches. The Bears will take on Grand Canyon Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. PT before hosting University of British Columbia at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16.
