Moon Over Montrose
Here we see a waning gibbous moon, one day beyond full Harvest, over Montrose Avenue in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It's illuminated 98.6% at this stage, and one may note that a plane took off from AZO and looped through the shot during the exposure.

Bertha Pitts Campbell (June 30, 1889 – April 2, 1990) was a civil rights activist and one of the 22 founding members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
She was born in Winfield, Kansas. She spent most of her childhood in Colorado where she lived with her grandmother, Eliza Butler, a former enslaved who worked as a laundress.
She was the only African American student enrolled in Montrose High School when she graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1908. Upon graduation, she was offered a four-year scholarship to Colorado College. She declined the scholarship and chose to enroll in Howard University in 1908, where she received financial support from the Congregational Church. In 1913 she co-founded the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and took part in a women’s suffrage march in DC. In June of that year, she graduated cum laude from Howard University with a BA in Education. She taught for two years in Topeka.
She married Earl Pitts, a railroad worker, and government worker, in 1917. The couple spent some time in Colorado and moved to Seattle in 1923. They had one son, Earl Jr who was killed in an accident as a baby. Earl Sr. died of a heart attack in 1954.
In Seattle, she was a committed activist and organizer. She was a charter member of the Christian Friends for Racial Equality, an organization that worked to expand housing and other opportunities for the black community; she worked with the Seattle Urban League and was the first African American member of the board of directors of the YWCA of Seattle-King County. She was an active member of the YWCA for 53 years.
At age 92, she led 10,000 members of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority in a march down Pennsylvania Avenue in DC to commemorate the participation of the organization in the suffrage march of 1913. Having long survived her husband and son, she spent her final years in a Seattle nursing home and died peacefully.
In 2018 and 2019, the Northwest African American Museum featured an exhibition on her and Mona Humphries Bailey, the 17th president of Delta Sigma Theta. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #deltasigmatheta

OC Questionnaire tag
Thank you for the tag @the-golden-comet
I'll be taking Dr. Phineas Abel Thorncroft and Simeon Montrose from The Masque of Murder for this too.
My questions are:
1. What would you do if your enemy asked for help?
2. Would you ask your enemy for help?
3. Do you act on impulse, or do you think before you act?
Dr. Phineas Abel Thorncroft
1. What would you do if your enemy asked for help?
- "If my enemy were to ask for my help, I would first evaluate the potential benefits to myself. Helping them could provide leverage or valuable information. I would demand something significant in return, ensuring the arrangement is advantageous to me."
2. Would you ask your enemy for help?
- "I would only ask my enemy for help as a last resort. I pride myself on my self-sufficiency, but I am not foolish. If the situation were dire enough, I might seek their assistance, albeit with extreme caution."
3. Do you act on impulse, or do you think before you act?
- "I always think before I act. Impulsive decisions often lead to mistakes, and I prefer a calculated, logical approach to any situation."
Simeon Montrose
1. What would you do if your enemy asked for help?
• "If my enemy asked for help, I would consider the request carefully. I'm not opposed to aiding them if it serves a greater good or furthers my investigation. However, I would ensure that any agreement works in my favor and maintain a position of strength."
2. Would you ask your enemy for help?
• "Asking my enemy for help would be a measure of last resort. I value my independence and resourcefulness, but if all other avenues were exhausted, I might approach them. I'd do so with a clear plan and an understanding of the risks involved."
3. Do you act on impulse, or do you think before you act?
• "I generally before I act. Being strategic and deliberate is crucial in my line of work. However, there are times when quick decisions are necessary, and I trust my instincts in those moments."

Looking north over Chicago's landfill efforts and extension of Lake Shore Drive. It's 1928 and the "Outer Drive" only reaches Montrose, with Montrose beach and Montrose harbor still being filled in. Irving Park Road's new access to LSD can be seen. Far to the north are the pink towers of The Edgewater Beach Hotel, then directly on the lake front. West of Montrose you can see a bit of the Wilson Avenue train station and the arch of the Arcadia Ballroom on the diagonal run of Broadway. The large campus of buildings on Marine Drive between Irving Park and Montrose is the former US Marine Hospital, now partially occupied by Disney Magnet School.

Chicago Pride 2025: Celebrating Diversity and Unity As we approach the vibrant month of June, Chicago prepares to host one of the most anticipated celebrations of the year—Chicago Pride 2025. This annual festival brings together people from all walks of life to celebrate love, diversity, and acceptance in the heart of the Windy City. Offering a colorful parade, incredible live performances, and a vibrant roster of events, Chicago Pride promises yet again to be a spectacular hallmark of inclusivity and fun. Chicago Pride Fest 2025: A Weekend of Joyful Festivities The festivities kick off with the Chicago Pride Fest, taking place over the weekend from June 21-22, 2025. Held in the iconic Northalsted neighborhood, the fest will transform the streets into a lively hub of music, dance, and celebration. While the 2025 headliners are still under wraps, last year's lineup boasted stellar performances by Natasha Bedingfield, JoJo Siwa, Sapphira Cristál, and Bob the Drag Queen (fresh from Madonna’s Celebration Tour). If past years are any indication, this year's lineup is sure to be just as exciting and diverse, featuring both established icons and rising stars from across the spectrum. In addition to music, the Pride Fest will feature a wide array of activities, including artisanal vendors, food trucks offering diverse culinary delights, and community booths providing resources and support for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies. Families, locals, and tourists alike are encouraged to join in the jubilant atmosphere, which showcases Chicago's commitment to equality and community spirit. The Pride Parade: A March for Equality The marquee event of the month is the iconic Chicago Pride Parade, scheduled for Sunday, June 29, 2025. The parade has long been a symbol of unity and a demonstration of the ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ rights. This year's parade route will follow the traditional path through Chicago’s vibrant Boystown neighborhood, now officially recognized as Northalsted, starting at the corner of Montrose Avenue and Broadway. From there, it will proceed south along Broadway, where attendees can enjoy the vibrant floats, spirited performances, and marchers dressed in all the colors of the rainbow. Local organizations, community groups, and corporate allies will join the parade, showcasing their unwavering support for the LGBTQ+ community. Expect to see everything from elaborate floats and creative costumes to heartfelt declarations of love and acceptance. The culmination of the parade typically sees a powerful display of solidarity at Diversey Parkway and Sheridan Road, with thousands of attendees coming together to celebrate and advocate for a more inclusive future. More than a Celebration: A Call to Action Chicago Pride 2025 isn't just an opportunity to revel in festivities; it’s a moment to reflect on the progress achieved and the challenges that remain. With numerous events planned to address key issues facing the LGBTQ+ community, this year's Pride will focus on galvanizing support for critical advocacy efforts and sparking meaningful conversations around rights and equal opportunities for all. Join the Celebration Whether you're a life-long Chicagoan or a first-time visitor, Pride 2025 offers a chance to immerse yourself in a culture of love, acceptance, and joy. The combination of the Pride Fest and the Parade promises memorable experiences, with opportunities to connect with people from diverse backgrounds while standing in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community. As the countdown to Chicago Pride 2025 begins, mark your calendars for a joyful celebration that promises to be as bold, colorful, and inclusive as ever. Let’s continue to march forward, hand in hand, towards a brighter and more inclusive future for all.

The Chicago Lakefront Trail Study: 50-40
Part One
Tumblr media
50th: 69th Street
Two crosswalks with crosswalk signs
69th Street is nowhere near the best access point for the Lakefront Trail, but it's significantly better than the intersections both north and south of it for one reason: crosswalk signs. The issues that 68th and 70th have with crossing high levels of traffic are somewhat mitigated at 69th just by having signs indicating they're there. Of course, you have to still be able to trust that the drivers will recognize the crosswalk signs.
Tumblr media
49th: Montrose
Two crosswalks across expressway exit/entrance with stop signs
There are many things I don't like about the Montrose Avenue entrance to the Lakefront Trail. There's the fact that it's across ramps that lead to Lake Shore Drive instead of being grade-separated from the street grid. There's the fact that the street continues for half a mile to the beach, making it not much different from a regular crosswalk. And the diversion of the actual trail to an underpass 1/10th of a mile away, instead of a direct continuation of the path it was on across Montrose, is the icing on top.
Tumblr media
48th: Wilson
Two crosswalks across expressway exit/entrance with stop signs
Wilson has many of the same issues that Montrose has: crossing expressway exits/entrances and the street continuing past the trail in particular. Montrose, however, is a more heavily used street to the east of Lake Shore Drive compared to Wilson, and I believe as a result there's no diversion from the straight path the Lakefront Trail is on here. The parking lot roughly 300 feet from the trail does prevent it from being higher than the next access point on this list.
Tumblr media
47th: Lawrence
Two crosswalks across expressway exit/entrance with stop signs
There isn't much to separate the access points at Montrose, Wilson, and Lawrence, and in fact the Wilson and Lawrence points are virtually identical. But although there is parking on Simonds Drive 350 feet away from this crossing, the lack of an actual parking lot so close to the crosswalk and trail just barely edges Lawrence out over Wilson, as I feel like it slightly disincentivizes driving down Lawrence.
Tumblr media
46th: Hayes (Street Level)
One crosswalk across an expressway with traffic light signal
Like Coles, this one would be ranked worse if there wasn't a better option nearby. Unlike the signalized parts of Lake Shore Drive downtown, there isn't any risk of backup beyond the crosswalk. It's still a crosswalk across an expressway, but there's a much better option across the street that we'll get to later. There is also a small bit of walking that you still have to do after crossing to get to the pedestrian pathway specifically, although the bike pathway is directly accessible after crossing the crosswalk.
Tumblr media
45th: Jeffery (Street Level)
One crosswalk across an expressway exit with traffic light signal
There are two access points at the southern end of Lake Shore Drive; an underpass from the Marquette Drive side, and a crosswalk from the Jeffery Boulevard side. While the crosswalk is markedly less safe because of the lack of grade separation, it does lead directly onto the Lakefront Trail. This is a benefit Hayes does not have, at least for the pedestrian pathway.
Tumblr media
44th: 67th Street
Two crosswalks with traffic light signal
This is, essentially, a crosswalk past one last expressway exit before US Route 41 becomes a local road down South Shore Drive. It's also not the most picturesque exit, as the limestone beach and the small semicircular park at the end of 67th Street have been sandbagged off due to high tides and erosion, but it terms of safety it ranks relatively high compared to the other South Shore Drive access points to the south.
Tumblr media
43rd: Oakwood Boulevard
Two crosswalks across expressway exit/entrance with stop signs
There is probably more personal bias in my ranking of Oakwood Boulevard than any other access point outside of the top 20. I prefer the overpass above Lake Shore Drive more than the underpass below it more commonly seen on the north side. I like its connection to the Boulevard System, which has a lot of potential to connect the rest of the city to the Lakefront Trail (something I'll cover in a later project). And I think its spot would be solidified even more if the bike lanes leading to the trail were painted green like other lanes across the city.
Tumblr media
42nd: LaSalle (Street Level)
One crosswalk across an expressway exit with traffic lights
Originally, I did not include this crossing in my analysis due to it being in such close proximity to the North Avenue underpass and the LaSalle Drive overpass. However, I included it at the last minute (hence the eleven entries here instead of ten) for two reasons. One, proximity didn't prevent me from including the street-level crossings at Hayes/63rd and Jeffery/Marquette. And two, it is very similar to the following street-level crossings at Belmont and Fullerton. This one ranks lower than the other two due to its crosswalk being on the expressway exit side of the street.
Tumblr media
41st: Belmont
One crosswalk across an expressway entrance with traffic lights
There are two things I dislike about the entrance points at Belmont, Fullerton, and LaSalle. One, there is only one crosswalk instead of two, and two, they all pass under Lake Shore Drive. I much prefer overpasses to underpasses, even doubly so when they are coupled with having to contend with expressway exit and entrance traffic, specifically because the darkness of the underpasses significantly complicate sightlines as opposed to sunlit overpasses. However, the traffic lights help them rank above crossings like Oakwood and Montrose.
Tumblr media
40th: Fullerton
One crosswalk across an expressway entrance with traffic lights
Fullerton ranks ever so slightly better than Belmont on my list. I flip-flopped back and forth between the two, but despite there being a longer walk to the actual trail from Fullerton's crosswalk, you have to cross the entrance to the Belmont Harbor parking lot if you're walking south from Belmont. This additional contention with car traffic ultimately was the final influence on my placements of Fullerton and Belmont's access points.
