The Russian Orb From Rural Ohio Has Beaten NaNoWroMo!
Guess what nerds?? As of today, I have both attempted and succeeded in the National Novel Writing Month challenge of writing 50,000 words in a writing project within the month of November!
Tumblr media
Why Tho?
Journalism and other short form written media has always been my area of expertise. I can write a baller game review or an articulate game guide. But creative writing and longform fiction have always been out of my grasp.
While I've known about NaNoWroMo for years, I've never dared attempt it. Until this year, of course. Feeling particularly inspired I wanted to try my hand at it, both to break past my preconcieved limitations and to reinforce what are some great writing skills and practices.
But that's all talk and no show. It's time I revealed what exactly I was spending hours every day after work writing.
Tumblr media
What's it about?
Inspired by media like Roadside Picnic, Annihilation, and Into The Radius, The Russian Orb In Rural Ohio tells the story of a lone protagonist who is trapped inside of an anomaly-filled zone spanning 20 miles around Columbus, Ohio. Many rules of reality are ignored in this zone, from time dilations and broken physics, to crystalline flora and unearthly monsters. They survive by going closer to the center of the overall proximity, where they scavenge rare and supernatural items called Artifacts to sell for food and other supplies.
The Sci-fi Horror Thriller is told from the perspective of an anomalous book the protagonist finds that automatically journals their actions and thoughts, providing a unique perspective on a story about the human mind and the difficulties it faces when isolated in a world devoid of safety or consistency.
This faux cover is just a mock up I made, and it uses concept art for a never-made show called ZONA. It's made by artist Alex Andreev.
How about some poorly photoshopped art I made for inspiration?

Where can we read it?
Fucking nowhere, that's where.
This is a hot mess of grammatical mistakes and continuity errors. If it sees the public light of day at all (which it probably won't), then it will be after a nice and healthy editing and revision process.
If you REALLY want to know, set a reminder for a year from now or something and then check to see if I have any new posts with the #RussianOrbInRuralOhio tag.
You can try sending me an ask, too. But there's no promise I'll take it seriously.

Closing Statement
Thanks for reading, folks. I'm admittedly quite proud of myself for having achieved this goal. And while it has a ton of rough edges right now, I'm pretty satisfied by the story I've made.
I hope everyone else that participated in Nano 2023 is proud of their efforts, whether you hit the 50k word count or not.
That's right bitches, it's more Alex Andreev concept art.

Following the Tracks
Everyday Drabbles #556
Tumblr media
The carriage reined to a stop next to another track in the snow. The hunter got out and examined it in the early morning light “She’s been this way,” he said to his companion. “Recently.” The track wasn’t so different from any other bird. You could mistake it for a chicken or a turkey if you discounted the fact that it was large enough for a man to lay down comfortably inside. “Come, Lawrence.” They had to hurry. The cyptozoological gardens opened in an hour, and if the terror bird wasn’t back in her enclosure, it would be their heads.
