People We Meet on Vacation

** spoiler alert ** Before I get into a review of this, let me starts by saying that I liked this book. Enjoyed seems like the wrong word. It's a 5 star for me, but I'm going to talk about the end, so beware for spoiler-ish content.

Everything Emily Henry writes I will be here for. However, after reading (and being completely destroyed by) Happy Place, I was a little gun shy with this one. Especially after I met Alex and Poppy. Oh, these two. I loved them. Their banter, their seemingly opposing personalities, their quirks, all of it. I was here for them. But I was scared.

Every chapter, I kept waiting for the shoe to drop. For the hurt to come. There were so many big emotions, building and building. Then I got closer to the end. They got together. Things were looking good, and we were so close, I thought that would be it. A gentle end to 12 years of friendship turning into something more.

BUT NO. There had to be conflict. In a way that stopped my breathing and made my chest ache. You know that feeling of your stomach not only turning to knots, but shredding, burning, the hurt rising to your lungs, numbing them and seizing them so the very effort to breath takes all your focus. Yeah, that kind of hurt. After that, the true ending seemed... not enough. I needed more, bigger, something of equal heights to the painful low. That I did not get.

I do want to say that Emily Henry nails character growth. That it's not just about the relationship, but about making each other better people. Being the person you need to be, realizing who you are to your very core. It just so happens that the way she writes love, the feelings she evokes, are so relatable for me. It touches those hidden places, opening all my barriers and getting to my very soul. My attachment, my emotions, are set to a 12, and there's no cushion left for the fall. (Side note, one of the other authors that is able to obliterate my walls and force me to feel everything in the rawest way, is Fredrik Backman. I might have mentioned him before...)

In the end, I did love this book. I loved Poppy and Alex. I want more of them. Their families, the people good and bad in their lives, all so perfectly brought together. It just hurts. If you think it isn't going to, wait for the last few chapters. It's a cruelly late hit. Be prepared.
