Summary: During a trip to Chicago, Y/n and Aleksander join her family for dinner, where her sister questions why they haven’t gotten engaged despite being together for years. The conversation plants a seed of doubt in Y/n’s mind, making her question whether love without marriage is truly enough for her.

Chicago had been cold, much colder than what Y/n and Aleksander were used to in Florida. But unlike Aleksander, Y/n was excited about the trip - seeing her family, catching up with her sister, and her old friends.

Dinner had been going well. Y/n’s parents were warn to him as always, her father making jokes about Aleksander’s quiet nature, and her mother gushing about how nice it was to see him again. Her sister, though, had been studying him all night, as if she had something on her mind.

Aleksander had excused himself to take a call, leaving Y/n at the table with her family. That was when her sister leaned in, lowering her voice just enough for only Y/n to hear.

“So… when’s the ring?”

Y/n nearly choked on her drink, caught off guard by the question. “What?”

Her sister shrugged, innocence in her voice. “You two have been together forever. You live together, you follow him everywhere he asks. Why aren’t you engaged yet?”

Y/n felt her stomach twist uncomfortably. “That’s not…. We’re not thinking about that right now.”

“Why not?” her sister pressed. “You want to get married, don’t you?”

The words stung more than they should have. Y/n never allowed herself to think about this very often. She already knew the answer. She wanted to get married, wanted something permanent with Aleks. And she also knew his answer and that he didn’t believe in marriage. He had told her that early on, not in a cruel way, just in a matter-of-fact way. He loved her, but he didn’t see marriage as something necessary.

And she had accepted that. Hadn’t she?

“If he hasn’t proposed by now, maybe he never will,” her sister continued, the words slicing through Y/n’s thoughts like a knife. “What if you’re wasting your time?”

Before Y/n could respond, Aleks returned, his presence settling beside her like an anchor. He wrapped his arm around her back, glancing between her and her sister. “What are you two talking about?”

Y/n forced a smile, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Nothing important.”

The rest of the night was a blur for Y/n. She laughed at jokes, responded when necessary, but her thoughts were elsewhere, circling around the possibility that maybe she had been lying to herself all along. Maybe love without marriage wouldn’t be enough for her in the end.

As they left the restaurant, Aleksander slipped his hand into hers, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. “You okay?” he asked.

Y/n hesitated, staring up at him, at the man she loved more than anything. And yet, for the first time in a long time, she wasn’t sure if love was going to be enough.

“Yeah,” she lied. “I’m fine.”

But doubt had already settled in, and she couldn’t shake it off.

She sat on the edge of the bed, absently unzipping her boots, her mind replaying the dinner conversation over and over.

What if you’re wasting your time?

She barely noticed Aleks moving around the room until he sat beside her, his body radiating warmth. He was quiet for a moment.

“You’ve been quiet since dinner,” he finally said.

Y/n forced a small smile. “Just tired.”

Aleksander hummed, unconvinced. He reached for her hand, lacing his fingers through hers. “You know I know when you’re lying, right?”

“My sister asked me why we aren’t married yet,” she admitted, her voice quieter than she intended.

Aleksander didn’t react right away. She usually loved it, the fact that he never rushed to answer just to fill the void. But now, it drove her crazy.

“Did that bother you?” he finally asked.

Y/n exhaled, looking down at their joined hands. “I don’t know. I thought I was okay with it. I thought… loving you would be enough.” She swallowed, voice thick with uncertainty. “But what if it’s not? What if I do want marriage? Do we avoid it and ignore it?”

Aleks stayed still beside her, but she felt his grip on her hand tighten, like he was afraid she might slip away if he let go.

“I love you,” he said, quiet but firm. “That’s never been a question.”

“I know,” she whispered. “But what if it’s not enough?”

He turned slightly, bringing his other hand up to her chin, tilting her face so she would look at him. His blue eyes were steady, searching for hers.

“I don’t need a ring or a contract to prove I love you.”

“I know,” she said again, but the words felt hollow now.

He hesitated before continuing. “Is this a dealbreaker for you?”

Her heart clenched. “I don’t know.”

She had always been so sure about Aleks, about them. But now, for the first time, she wasn’t sure of anything at all.

Aleksander exhaled slowly, rubbing his thumb over her knuckles. “I don’t want to lose you.”

“I don’t want to lose you either.”

But love alone wasn’t the problem. The problem was what came next.

Aleksander squeezed her hand again, grounding her. After a moment, he spoke, his voice softer this time. “If marriage is something you need… I want to understand why.”

Y/n’s chest tightened. “It’s not about needing a wedding or a ring. It’s about knowing that forever means the same thing to both of us.”

“Then I guess we need to figure it out.”

And that uncertainty lingered between them as they sat there in silence, still holding on to each other, but unsure if love would be enough to keep them from falling apart.

Matthew took a deep breath before he stepped on stage and took his place next to his new GM, Bill Zito. He was a little nervous, but he was excited too. He almost felt like on his draft day, just that this time he was sure where he’d end up. Definitely not the Oilers. Not the Flames. But the Panthers, the team that had been at the top of his list.

He fiddled with his sunglasses before he remembered to stop. He didn’t want to show nerves. At least he wasn’t the one having to go first. He hid his smile by sucking his lip into his mouth when Bill Zito fumbled the introduction – it seemed he wasn’t the only one struggling with nerves. This was not only a big step for Matthew but for the whole franchise. Bill Zito would either be celebrated for his braveness and foresight or he would be chased out of town for trading away their franchise heroes.

i like to call this one: omega guiding their team alphas hand to the place they really want it because the alpha happens to be a sweetie and terribly well-mannered and maybe a little obtuse but the alpha once feeling their fingers skim the heavy fabric of the scarf wrapped tightly around their neck as a protective layer immediately shifts their hand away from it frustrating all involved

(its really ekky moving sashas hand away from his head because he shifted his hat up in the process and he wanted to adjust it but sashas holding onto him so tightly he has to physically move his hand away to tell him "hey my hats falling off move it" but i choose to be romantic about these things)

Sasha wakes long after midnight to the sound of a wolf outside his door and the waves crashing against the beach.

He reaches over and turns on the lamp before grabbing a robe and going downstairs.

Matthew’s wolf is huge, the tips of his ears in line with Sasha’s shoulders and when he opens the back door to let Chucky in, it’s no problem for Matthew to stretch up and lick at the side of Sasha’s face.

“Gross,” he complains and the wolf huffs before shaking his head. He’s still wet from the ocean, although as he’s closing the door Sasha sees the puddle on his porch where Chucky shook off before he started scratching at the door to be let in. Sasha almost hates how he’s grown to love the past few years the smell of wet dog filling his living room.

He goes to the kitchen with the wolf at his heels and fills up a bowl of water and grabs a steak out of the fridge that he bought a few days ago with the full moon in mind. He plates the raw steak and puts it in and the bowl on the floor.

Matthew tears at the steak almost before Sasha can even pull his hand away, his long, sharp canines ripping it apart, his eyes watching Sasha wearily like he’s going to take it away. 

It’s strange, having a predator in his kitchen. In Finland, werewolves are expected to stay in the woods during the full moon and even in the days leading up to it. He remembers his friend from school, whose father was gone five days a month to go into the forest. Matthew keeps his eyes on Sasha while he eats. Sasha stays very still.

Finally, the steak is done and the water in the bowl has been turned red from the blood around Matthew’s mouth when Chucky comes up to Sasha and grabs the cuff of his robe, pulling and growling until Sasha says, “Fine, fine. Let me put on my swimsuit first.” 

Matthew growls and snaps his teeth a little at Sasha when he tries to pull his hand away. He can never tell exactly how much Chucky understands as a wolf, how much he’s running on instinct and smells and a barely-there grasp of language and how much he’s still Matthew, Sasha’s winger and friend and sometimes in hotel rooms late at night away from home, something more than a friend.

Sasha groans and says, “Okay, okay.” They go down to the beach together, Sasha leaving his back door open to let the sea breeze through the house, Matthew still with Sasha’s robe in his mouth, tugging when he deems Sasha as moving too slow.

Matthew goes straight for the water when they reach the tide, jumping in and dunking his head, trying a few times before coming up with a fish. He brings it back to shore and Sasha watches him mangle it, ripping scales and skin from meat and eating it all, working around the bones as Sasha takes his robe off and shoves down his boxers.

“You’ll protect me from sharks,” Sasha says as he gets into the ocean naked and Matthew bumps his wet nose against his hand as they wade into the water, seagulls descending on the fish carcass Matthew left behind.

They don’t swim for long, maybe twenty minutes before the waves and the tide has thrown Sasha around enough and he swims back to shore, the soft sand under his feet sticking to his skin as he makes his way to his outdoor shower.

He whistles for Matthew, still playing in the ocean, trying to catch another fish, nipping his teeth at them as they splash and swim away. 

He’s hard to spot in the moonlit ocean, his light brown fur made dark by the water, but Sasha can still find him, like there’s a tether between them, something makes him always know exactly where to look to find the light reflecting off his coat. It’s like Chucky’s captured the moonlight somehow and is shining it back to him. Like he’s the moon himself, or at least Sasha’s moon.

Matthew’s head turns at the whistle, and he comes swimming out of the ocean after trying to catch one more fish. Sasha nods towards the shower once, which Chucky growls and turns his nose up at, shaking the water away from his fur in the same spot on Sasha’s porch and trudging into the house.

They go upstairs to Sasha’s room and he gets under the blankets again as Matthew lays on along the length of Sasha’s body above the covers. He rests his head close to Sasha’s shoulder and after he turns off his lamp, Sasha can’t help the way he reaches over and tangles his hand up in Chucky’s salt-crusted coat.

The next morning, Matthew is human again, naked in Sasha’s bed.

“Ugh, I need a shower,” Chucky says as he blinks awake.

Sasha runs a hand over his face and laughs, saying, “You do. I tried to get you to take one last night, but your wolf is stubborn.”

Matthew laughs and says, “That sounds about right,” before he rolls out of bed and goes to Sasha’s bathroom, turning the water on and tuning the radio Sasha keeps in his bathroom to a top 40 station.

By the time Chucky’s made it downstairs, Sasha has breakfast and coffee on the table for him.

“Thanks,” he says as he sits down and starts shoveling in the steaming hot sausage and eggs.

“I didn’t see you last month,” Sasha says finally before he takes a sip of his tea. He didn’t mean to bring it up. He’s avoided talking about it for weeks. “Your wolf didn’t come.”

“Dad was in town,” Matthew says. “We changed together.”

Sasha hums in acknowledgement before Chucky says, “I think it missed you though, the wolf. The gate in my backyard was all torn up.”

Sasha bites his lip to hide his smile. He missed the wolf too, felt stupidly devastated when he cooked the steak he bought for Chucky for himself.

“This is the last one at home for a while,” Matthew says. “The next three full moons we’re on roadies.”

Sasha frowns. He knows some hotels have special areas for werewolves at full moon, basement kennels or small courtyards. He hates thinking of Chucky changing there.

“I was wondering if–um–listen man, you can say no, but I was wondering if it would be cool for me to change in your room?” Matthew says before he takes a huge bite of eggs. His eyes are looking at his plate, cast down.

“Yeah,” Sasha says, thinking of Matthew’s wolf’s long body pressed up to his while he’s trying to sleep, warm and safe. “That sounds perfect to me.”

Matthew looks up, smiling. There's still a spot of blood on his jaw. Sasha reaches over and wipes it off, his thumb grazing against Matthew’s stubble.
