Such lofty topics–the ethics one inherited and morality as a matter of perspective. Maybe she would have been better for accepting the offer to share a drink together. On the other hand, it was comforting to have an outlet to vocalize some of these thoughts. Tek had been a sympathetic enough ear, even if she did still feel as though she was reeling. Her thoughts intermingled with Tove’s and a fog of doubt swirled around everything she thought she knew compounding the disillusionment she had already felt creeping in as a result of the Aetherian invasion. Freydis wondered momentarily if some sort of extended lifetime or extension of his own consciousness perhaps colored the way the man opposite her interpreted the world and such things as the focus of their discussion, but she let the thought go quickly. She was learning that it was easier sometimes not to follow threads of her thoughts. “Then we must be sure to make the differences that do exist matter,” she responded.
But what he said before lodged itself in her mind and rubbed salt in the wounds of her guilt. Was she not part of the ruling class itself? Perhaps she did not hold ultimate power, but she did hold a share of the blame.
His faith in her was a comfort, especially for the fact she could tell it was given in sincerity. Freydis hoped she would find something as well, but deep in her mind, she wondered if perhaps it would be better if she hadn’t. She had chosen to abandon her life as Tove and carry on as Freydis more to be a weapon than to be a woman. Her mettle was gathered, and the whole of it aimed toward being a worthy adversary against any darkspawn or Aetherian. She hadn’t returned with the intention of a life colored by any sense of fulfillment, only one colored by the blood she would spill to defend the whole of Taravell until she was cut down herself. “Thank you,” she finally responded. “To share the battlefield as well as keep company with allies like yourself is enough to keep moving forward in the meantime.”
Her words were true, the Iskarans weren't much better than the Aetherians when you thought about actions, however, Alder would never judge them for doing what they were taught their whole life. Since early ages they were taught to fear magic and to fear its users as well as anything touched by it, so they didn't know any better than to grow up with such teachings... The law imposed sins upon them, feeding off of their fear, not their individual beliefs, and if found guilty of helping magic refugees in any way the cost was their lives, therefore, one would always prioritize their own safety over another's, specially when they'd been brainwashed by the kingdom to hate what was different and love and praise the man who represented the law - at least the vast majority of people. "I don't believe in blaming the people for the wrongs of the ruler..." He replied. "But I suppose you are right, we are not that different..."
Although she spoke quietly, the man could hear her perfectly, not only the words that left her mouth, but the meaning behind them, and he knew how it felt to feel lost, but more than that, he knew a strong person when he saw one, and she could find herself and find the path to go forward. He leaned forward, his forearms to the table in front of them. "Then I hope you find something to believe in, Freydis." He offered her a warm smile, filled with kindness. "I have faith in you." It was true, he didn't know her that much, but still he did, it was a trait, or a flaw, of his, he believed in people even though he couldn't trust himself with their faith, a bit hypocritical of him, but it was his truth.

Location: Haven Person: @heroic-ignus They kind of hang around each other from what he's seen, that scavenging blonde Juneau and the man situated off to the side of all the hustling people moving about where the people of Haven have set things up for them. He's got his suspicions about Juneau that he thought he'd all but confirmed, but this guy.... "Are you hanging 'round?" Without Goose in tow, Etienne almost awkwardly perches himself on the same log the rugged man is sitting on but he doesn't look directly at him, he looks out at the other refugees. But mostly he looks to the people of Haven, the wolves that have come to help them and he feels far more anxious than he should.

who? @heroic-ignus where? the nornwatch tower when? post troupe 1: the last night
Mikhael had meant to check earlier, but he had ended up getting distracted with a thousand and one different self-assigned responsibilities. Or so he keeps telling himself, despite the grim reality of the truth that he keeps to himself. Deep inside, he is still the same wide-eyed child looking towards Maferath's branch of the Warrior Guild and dreaming of becoming a blademaster. It’s all he wanted then, and one of the goals he hopes to accomplish now. The respect he feels for the Blademasters is overwhelming and all-encompassing, and to know one of them is a Vuldak?
It’s a startling realization.
Initially, Alder’s demeanor had almost convinced him not to worry, but the more time passed, the odder his behavior became, and— He is worried that staying in his hand and not revealing the former werewolf’s true nature will come back to bite him in the ass later, he truly is. But it is too late to say anything without revealing himself as well, so all he can do is watch him carefully and hope for the best, while preparing for the worst.
“Quite a night,” he muses as he comes to stand next to the Blademaster, eyes falling on the Vuldak and taking a moment to examine him. “Were you wounded? I might not be a healer, but I know the basics so I might be of help if you were.”

It felt as if he were being intentionally careful around her, the way he nodded and watched her. She hated it about him, she hated anyone who treated her like she was fragile or childish. She had faced more than they knew and more than she felt they could ever conceivably guess. Juneau hated being patronized more than almost anything.
“Well, you aren’t sleeping either,” she pointed out in a sharp tone of voice. His hypocrisy went unappreciated, or at least she convinced herself it was hypocrisy to steel her resolve in disliking the man. Her eyes narrowed and her expression flattened as he brought up her initial plan to leave some time ago. If she were pressed to give a reason why she hadn’t gone, she’d remain steadfast in maintaining his intervention had nothing to do with it. There were spoils to be lifted off the dead, long-forgotten heirlooms to be found in abandoned structures, or perhaps she’d just say it was for Kettle and their unlikely alliance. But not because this intrusive stranger told her to. “Calling this moving is generous,” she muttered under her breath.
Juneau finished pulling herself together to depart the small field of sleeping bodies and paused only to orient her shoulders toward the man who still insisted on speaking to her for some unknown reason. Her head tilted to the side in the same moment one side of her mouth curled upward to form her signature, self-assured smirk. “Maybe I’m scarier than whatever is out in those woods,” she suggested. She knew the likelihood anyone would feel that way was low–she was small, still a bit baby-faced and unassuming. But Juneau knew she had what it took to figure out how to survive. The simper on her face shifted into a coy look, just barely illuminated by the dying fire as she lied, “Maybe I was going to go collect more kindling and fuel for that fire, but since I shouldn’t go too far, I’m sure you’ll manage.”
It was weird how the mood swiftly changed when they spoke to each other, weighting on his shoulders as if he had his heavy armor on in that moment, he almost had to check to make sure he didn't, butit was obvious through the warmth of the clothing he was wearing that that was not the case - plate always got colder with the weather, even when he was wearing so much padding on the inside of the pieces. A moment of realization came as he noticed the light getting dimmer as he forgot to play with what was left of the fire, quickly returning to his self-given task.
Alder nodded softly, noticing the defensiveness of her demeanor even at a simple question such as that. He couldn't blame her, they had started on the left foot but he wouldn't have done it any other way as he was in a difficult position back then, trying to stop her from going out all alone during the night. If anything, it was a miracle he could convince her, but ever since he'd asked Lor to patrol around their encampments during the night to make sure she didn't try anything, and, if she did, he asked her to follow the girl and keep her safe, but it never got to this point.
"Things to do, you say? In the middle of the night?" He asked in an innocent tone of voice, not in a way to mock her for whatever she planned to do. "Well, I'm not going to stop you this time... I just hope you're not thinking of leaving the group again, we're already moving now, aren't we...?" At least that was somewhat true, although slower than he'd expected, but maybe that was just his point of view as someone who could probably get to Lysara in half a week from their initial point if he wanted.
A sigh left his mouth. "That's a joke." He had to point that one out just in case she didn't understand it as such, the older man didn't want to make it all more awkward than it should be. "Just don't go too far, it's really dark out there, you might get lost." Honestly, he didn't really know why he went as far as to say that, was he her parent or something? She could take care of herself.

01/01/2024-Lakeside Country Park
Photos taken in this set are of: 1 and 2. Redwings a smashing bird which I loved seeing at all three locations today and that I'm on an incredible run for seeing photographing over the past few days and this season, a fantastic thrush. 3. Some lichen which my first Goldcrest of the year a gem of a bird that I'm also doing well for of late weaved between. 4. Great Tit another bird I'm on a nice run for. 5, 7 and 8. My first Great Spotted Woodpecker, Ring-necked Parakeet and Cormorant of the year, three key year ticks for me today. The Great Spotted Woodpecker stole the show at Lakeside with captivating views of these charming and bold birds both between the lakes and moments after and near my first Green Woodpecker of the year in the eastern meadows, the Ring-necked Parakeet the first time I've ever ticked it for the year on January 1st was a revelation in the woods and the Cormorant like the glorious female Goosander that I saw on beach lake at the same time as it species I don't always see here but I'm on a very strong run for seeing this winter which has filled me with immense joy with turning up on New Year's Day made me euphoric. 6. Black-headed Gull in the rain. 9. Winter grass. 10. Violet flower and leaves.
My traditional New Year's Day Lakeside walk which I began doing annually ten years ago to start building my new bird year list an activity I love was a triumph, a lot of things I tried of going to certain areas to try and see birds paid off even when I don't see them frequently such as a Grey Wagtail I enjoyed flying down and bobbing in Monks Brook from the ford bridge. Pied Wagtail too, cheery Siskins in the lake side alders an evocative Lakeside winter sight and a massive species for me on New Year's Days over the years, Dunnock, the dependable Long-tailed Tits, Greylag Geese and an exhilarating view of a Sparrowhawk dashing over beach lake and plunging into the trees of the northern fenced off area alarming Chaffinch, Redwing and Woodpigeon alike an unexpected moment were other great sightings. Moorhen, Coot and Great Crested Grebe all year ticks and Blue Tit were other standout species. I was also pleased to take part in something else I have done so in recent years, the New Year Plant Hunt with as always at this time of year in flower gorse, the winter heliotrope, ivy, pineappleweed, daisies, dock leaves north of the site on the grass and rose hips good to see too.

It's busy, the place usually is in the evenings and when they closed up shop, the rowdy wolves who'd piled into All Fours wound up at the Waffle House. But until then they were his problem and Damian moves from one end of the bar to another quickly, has to keep an eye on where Regina is at all times, Serkan too in case anything gets out of hand. Alder is....Damian likes Alder alright, he just can't hold his liquor and that's all fine and dandy, but when it's busy, it's harder to give him the validation he needs. Which isn't something he minds doing either, he gets it, he's grown up split between two packs, he knows emissaries are important. They don't always have the easiest jobs and it's not like he's also not worried about the new alpha situation. Sighing and nodding towards Serkan that he's taking his break, he goes about making himself a drink. "It's not you, everyone's just stressed out." And incredibly excitable, it's fun but it's also dangerous.
who?: @howlforahookup where?: all fours, but he has my tolerance
^*^
Alder really didn't like to drink, something he figured he wouldn't be able to hide for long with how frequently he came to these lycan hangouts. Even though he always nursed a club soda, there was no slipping his lack of alcohol past their noses. At least, he assumed that was the problem and got himself a proper gin and tonic that night. But it didn't feel like the problem was resolved. "Wait don't go Mr. Bartender. You've got to help me figure this out. See? I'm ... assimilating!" Perhaps it was tacky to hound a busy bartender for attention, but if downing the rest of his drink didn't immediately attract a buddy or two he wasn't sure what else he could do. "I'm giving my all to the city to help prepare for a new alpha, and it barely feels like I have any friends. Is it me? You can tell me if it's me," Alder sloppily laments, disheveling his hair some as he falls against the bar and rakes his hand through his strands, tossing Damian his best "talk to me pls" eyes.

Image 01: The Oregon Trail hosted over 400k emigrants over a journey that took between four and six months. The average pioneer walked 15-20 miles a day. You can still see the wagon ruts of the original Oregon Trail TODAY. Image 02: The Oregon Trail is nicknamed “The World’s Longest Graveyard” as more than 30k people died on the trail. It is estimated that there are bodies every 80 yards! Above: Marked Pioneer Gravesite. Below: Unmarked Pioneer Gravesite. Image 03: George Donner. Image 04: James and Margaret Reed. Image 05: Example of makeshift raft to cross wagons over rivers. Image 06: Lansford Hastings book “The Emigrant’s Guide to Oregon and California” featured info on a “shortcut” that crossed through the Salt Lake Desert and Wasatch Mountain Range instead of following the regular route. Long story short, it sucked basically. Image 07: The Fosters, Eddy, and Pike Family, build a cabin against a large rock (Pictured Above). The families packed 16 people into the structure. Image 08:The Alder Creek camp was a poorly constructed tent of branches against a tree with a canvas sheet wrapped around. Replica pictured here. (tw: mention of violence)
“No, they’re not,” she insisted firmly, her tone terse and controlled only by the gritted teeth she spoke through. “And you don’t know anything about me.” Weeks prior, when she had been speared through, stoned, flayed, and ultimately skinned before the pain and fear of it all finally, temporarily faded into the black abyss of a false death, no one had come back for her. No one had missed her. If she had earned it, they would have. In retrospect, they led her to it–he led her to it, the one who knew her best and she trusted him most. Ivar, as she believed, was the authority on what she deserved, and he had found a way to demonstrate it to her plainly. This man before her knew nothing. “I see things as they are, you’re the one who is confused, old man.”
Her lip curled as her features pinched into a sneer in a subconscious show of disgust as he continued to speak to her. “Spare me the fucking platitudes,” she snapped at him, intending for them to be her parting words. She wasn’t interested in quotes and cliches on the darkness and lightness in the world or individuals. Juneau felt the people who believed that had been blessed with soft enough lives to delude them into believing it. She’d been given a life that gave her the gift of the truth, awful and wretched as it was. Some random man and his pet in the woods weren’t going to convince her otherwise.
So incensed from his attempt to proselytize her was she that she refused to even dignify the conversation with parting words. Juneau turned on a heel, too consumed with her internal animosity toward everyone and everything around her, to realize that she was more than likely fulfilling his objective to dissuade her from leaving the safety of the group by taking refuge from his company back in the tower itself. If he spoke to her retreating back, she gave no sign that she had listened.
Those words broke his heart. Not because of a sense of fragility or hardship, but because he could relate to both the phrase itself and the meaning she put into it; that was something he'd fought through his whole life, even when he was someone, for The Hero of Skohfjell was seen as a sign of hope and rightousness much more than a person, so he wasn't seen for who he was, but for what people expected him to be, and he did try his best to fit in on those shoes, however, it only made it even more unbearable to live. Even his last moments were an attempt to live up to what the world needed, and when he thought it was finally all over, he woke up as the monster he would live to prevent from escaping his mind. It was eternal doom that brought him to this point, but it was compassion that fished him out of that darkness through Lor, and although he couldn't be saved from what he'd done, maybe the girl in front of him still had time to become a better person than he was.
The blademaster now had a calmer demeanor and his eyes could shine with caring if not for the lack of light all around them. "Everyone is worthy of being missed, you have value just like any other person." He said softly but conviction still rendered his words valid, not as means of comfort but as if spoken from his heart. "You might not be able to see it now, but I'm sure others could if you let them." It was hypocritical of him to say these things for he'd never allow another to see through his mask under normal circumstances, but he knew well enough he did not behave in the way he should, he was already lost, she didn't have to be.
Alder knew that deep down she could understand his concerns and that she probably knew it was dangerous to go out without proper planning, but he also knew it would be hard to get his point across as long as he was seen as an opposition to her. He did not want to be that, he was on her side if anything. "What kind of person would I be if I didn't care for others?" He replied with another question, pausing for a moment as he watched her, but then a sigh left his mouth. "-Even in darkness there has to be light, and if it's hard to find it... Become that light to others that might not see it in themselves. That's something I learnt from a good friend a long time ago, and I kept it close to my heart ever since." It was a good quote when you thought about what was happening in Iskaldrik, all the pain, the suffering, the unnecessary bloodshed - light had dimmed, but didn't disappear. "You might not like my "riddles", as you called them, but I'm sure you can understand the meaning."

Progress Update 01 - Character Introductions
This is progress update 01 for my novel. I'm writing it for my master's classes at SNHU. To date, I have an intro, the first chapter, and half of the second chapter. I'm writing this blog to keep my shit in order and my brain on track and free of thoughts. Additionally, earning a following pre-publication seems like it would be useful, so I'll just be transparent about that. I'm not trying to live off my writing, but I do want an agent and a good editor. So I can't just publish my work and pray to god that people read it, I've gotta put in a little leg work.
With that in mind, the main focus of this blog is to talk about my progress with the novel and contextualize the writing process against the publication process. I have no specific plans for publication now, but as they develop I'll detail them here.
Let's get into the novel. The idea for The Stars have Always Beckoned Us is relatively simple. Ernest, a scholar at Solas Realt in a fictional Boston Victorian inspired city, feels the rush of discovery and love for magic. He wants to make a contribution to the field of Astronomy, which in this universe is a combination of arcane magic and science. Spells are created by invoking the names of certain planets and channeling their power. Ernest intends to find a new planet which he can harness the power of, and then cast a spell to observe farther and more closely than anyone before. He intends to leave a mark on the field and establish his name.
I wanted to use the name Ernest Ebreitas, but I'm not sure if it's appropriate or even legal to bite Bloodborne like that. Of course, the game is a huge part of the inspiration for the book, but that doesn't mean I can just copy it, I think. I mean it's only a name and a reference, I'm not like stealing the intellectual property of the game, or is just the name considered IP? It's a question an editor would know the answer to.
Ernest is determined. He's a little snobbish about the Academy; he doesn't have a lot of friends (two, to be exact, and one of them lives far away) and he doesn't make any effort to be social. All of his time is poured into his research and his classes. Ernest doesn't really understand the concept of "getting his hands dirty" because things sort of naturally fall into his lap. He's not exactly a genius, but things kind of tend to go right for him. This ease of access for him makes him look down a bit on his classmates. He can't understand why everyone else seems to be struggling and failing when it all comes so easily to him.
The first few chapters I want to spend setting up the academy and Ernest's interactions with it. Chapter 1 has Ernest arriving back at the academy after summer break to find that the headmaster still has not returned. He's been missing for three years now after a mysterious happening at his tower. Here we are also introduced to the interim headmaster, Alder Stately, and the mysterious new Professor Marwyn.
Chapter 2 introduces us to Ernest's friend Viola Tillman and Ernest's observatory space. It's not really his, but he has picked up enough of a reputation at the academy that most people just sort of leave it for Ernest. This chapter will be used to introduce some of the basics of the magic system as well. We'll see Ernest doing some Astronomy(TM).
In the next few chapters, I want to spend some time establishing the school and the magic system. The big problem will be hooking the audience - I need to drop some clues as to Elrick's (the headmaster) whereabouts. I think I will have Ernest overhearing chatter or have Viola drop some gossip, or something. Eventually, Ernest will demand to see the headmaster, and Elrick will reveal himself as having been mostly fine over the past three years. He's just been desperately trying to find out more about what happened to him - which was, of course, contact from an Old God residing deep in the center of a black hole. Elrick was given an inadvertent gift. Just as the planets are great sources of arcane power for the scholars of Solas Realt, this Old God was drawn on for power accidentally. This resulted in Elrick experiencing the first instance of blood magic ever recorded.
So, once Ernest and Elrick get in contact, they both make efforts to understand and control this new magic. It will go poorly for Elrick and he will be transformed into the primary villain of the novel. Somehow. This is subject to change.
Anyway, more blog posts forthcoming. I'll try to stick to a roughly weekly upload schedule so that I can continue to organize my thoughts and think through the structure of the novel.
I need feedback. If you, by chance, find this post, read the whole thing, and decide you want to rip me a new one and call my ideas stupid, I completely encourage you to do so. I need everything.

Intel «довольно скоро» покажет процессор Arrow Lake, выпущенный по технологии Intel 20A
Arrow Lake.
Патрик Гелсингер и образец ускорителя вычислений Ponte Vecchio. Источник изображения: Intel
