yes!! bill absolutely gets a boyfriend i'm just torn between it being alden curruthers or mac callander

on one hand alden: confident flamboyant gay man who was so gay he was useless at hiding it in 1899 let alone timewarping to an era where homosexuality didn't rely entirely on codewords like discouraged men? bill getting to meet this proud gay man who understands the intense 19th century social values bill has to unlearn before he can be that comfortable with himself and his sexuality? bill being in love with alden while constantly awestruck by how confident he is in spite of the time period and homophobia and very realistic chance of being hate crimed they both experienced? sharing that experience of not having the vocabulary to express what their sexuality was or even the concept of sexuality but alden still being so confident and comfortable in who he is and trying to help bill find that level of pride too?

on the other, mac callander. the way bill talks and asks about mac with that trembling optimism of maybe he's okay? bill mourning mac callander? like maybe they were both heartless men living as outlaws because that was the only way 'they' had to survive but also seeing that in each other? maybe it was a thing in canon era? the angst of mac feeling like he's choosing between bill and davey when davey refuses to even acknowledge his brother is homosexual? davey still trying to cling onto an era that is so obviously past and constantly ending up in jail then not wanting mac's help as mac becomes more comfortable admitting there's a word for what he 'is' now? bill and mac both unpacking internalized homophobia and toxic masculinity while also feeling so validated by ongoing modern era protests and progress in queer rights? toxic yaoi with a happy ending where they're both still chain smoking hard drinking ranch hands who ride horses and carry guns in modern era and don't have a tidy domestic life but unmistakably love each other?

When I first saw the interaction between Trelawny and Alden at the train station, I thought the network of "discouraged men" was code for gay and communist lmao. I don't think I was wrong??

Anyway I love that name for a gay communist club (regardless of gender of course) let's gooo

So i don’t think they’d have that conversation irl, because cmon what year it is.

But anyway, I think in this ship Alden doesn’t suppress himself and not as shy about his emotions, unlike Bill who is so insecure about his (plus years of denial and forcing himself into a closet for safety) which make me think that he absolutely can’t fathom that you can actually communicate your feelings(🤯🤯🤯)

so here he just let it fly over his head without understanding/trying to understand what the men actually talks about. Bcuz “fuck you mean talk about feeling, a real though men doesn’t have feelings, he’s an outlaw and not some sissy boy to explain what makes him upset, bottling up until this sadness transforms into anger”

and if they were longer into knowing each other he’d definitely listen more and mayyybe open up just a little, but rn he’s just trying to avoid going into this topic, agreeing just to move on

but i’m also sure as hell Bills is not that hard to change if he’s getting validation he needs (and will get from Alden and they will live happy ever after maybe not as lovers but as a good friends and and….

-Bill’s parents are named Augustus Williamson and Martha Williamson, formerly Martha Vautour

-Their marriage was an arranged one, but despite that Martha cared very much for Bill

-The Williamson family had made a small fortune off of the slave trade and plantations, but fell into debt just before the civil war

-Bill was born in southern Kentucky

-The name Marion came from Martha’s side of the family, otherwise Bill would have been ‘Augustus Jr/III/IV/etc’ so he’s very conflicted because he loves his mom and wants to honor her w his name but he also hates getting teased

-Augustus was a Confederate soldier despite Kentucky not being a part of the Confederacy, and was very passionate about it due to his family’s fall from wealth

-Martha taught Bill how to read and write because Augustus didn't want him attending 'yankee' schools

-Martha died of TB when Bill was 12, he doesn't know it was TB specifically but he knows it was an illness

-After his mother’s death, his father’s racist rhetoric became more ingrained into Bill 

-Bill lived with his father until he died; from an angry black man taking a shotgun to his face during one of Augustus' drunken rants

-Augustus’s death comes before Bill can join the army, but Bill still joins the army despite not wanting to. He doesn’t know what else he could do and he’s too scared and insecure to try something new. 

-Because of the lack of physical abuse, Bill doesn’t consider his dad abusive

-The older he gets, the less he remembers about his mother. If she had survived longer, his life would have gone on a different path. He doesn't try to remember much about her because he knows she wouldn't like who he grew up to be.

-Borrowing some ideas from charlybird my beloved: Alden Carruthers, (the train station clerk in Rhodes) his eventual boyfriend, is the first person he talks to about his childhood

-His and Alden's relationship is very healing for the both of them (seriously go check out charlybird)

-Bill starts seeing his dad in Dutch during/after Guarma, and because of his conversations with Alden about his childhood he realizes that 'hey, something's wrong with Dutch' versus in canon I imagine he would just ignore that realization
