A general named Crook decided to meet with Geronimo to negotiate his surrendering. Geronimo recounted to Crook that the reason he left the reservation was how the rumor there was that he was a bad Indian and needed to be hanged. Every time Geronimo was at the reservation he did not feel at ease with the guards. He immediately distrusted them. He told general Crook that he wants Agents that are able to talk right with him.
Crook was unable to promise this to Geronimo because the Agents were being assigned by the department of the interior located in Washington. Geronimo continued to fight for the peace of Apaches in the reservations. He explained to Crook that they are all children of God and is listening to them.
General Crook rebutted that when Geronimo surrendered in January 1884, he made a promise to be in peace, but failed. He quickly suggests to Geronimo to accept to live in peace to he will continue to go after them. Geronimo adjourned the meeting for the day and the next day they held continued to talk about it while Crook sent Alchise and Kayetenay to convince the others that surrendering was the right decision. Geronimo ended up shaking hands with Crook and agreed to surrender. However, Geronimo failed his end of the agreement and decided to escape yet again as they were going to the U.S. because he had suspicions.
