On occasions Arthur would go out hunting. Though that is what he told Uther. He'd take Merlin and a few close guards, such as Leon, and ride out to a forest far and over the land. They would settle and Leon would nod at the two as they left separate to the party. The knights would hunt and those who wished not to, would go with Merlin and Arthur to a far village that did not know what the prince of Camelot looked like. So as the nights reigned on, Merlin and Arthur would drink their fill, gambling and placing bets and having a merry time. On rare occasions Merlin would be brave enough to take Arthur's hand, as it was common amongst far villages for men to be in love, and he would pull Arthur to the floor as they danced with others. Merlin dorned a large wondrous smile while other wore eyes of a love struck fool, a smile to match that of Merlin's. And they would dance. They would have fleeting touches as their breath grew tiresome from the laughter and their feet grew sore. And when all was well and done they would retire to a room upstairs. The candle light flickering softly to illuminate each feature on their faces. Arthur would trace a finger gently down Merlins face and Merlin would place soft kisses on Arthur's hand and knuckles. A sign of devotion and utter love each held for the others. These moments were rare. They happened few. They did not dare to do more for fear of Uther finding out. And so on these rare trips to outer lying villages as common with a man to another, the people would look away as they felt they were breaching an intimate and private moment amongst the two as they looked in eachothers eyes. With their secret touches when garnered. And so as the night went out and dawn rose so did they. Merlin and Arthur and any knight that joined them would head out back into the forest to meet with the hunting party, what they caught was their proof. And as Merlin and Arthur mounted their horses they pretended. The pretended to not hold such love for the other. Pretended their touch was little more then that of need and they pretended to be surface level friends as they bantered, such as what was appropriate for a servant and a prince. Though as they rode at the front back to Camelot, the knights looked on, they look with sorrow in their eyes knowing the two could be nothing more until Uther was well and away, no longer on the throne. And on those ever rare occasions when Merlin and Arthur were alone, Merlins eyes would light up with gold, Arthur's breath hitching as molten butterflies of many gold and sparkling colours the likes of jewels would flout around them, one landing on his very nose. They would dissappear in puffs and slow sparkles like the drizzling rain, Merlin would bless him with a kiss on the nose and nothing more would happen. This went on for many years, trips to outer lying villages. Forest for hunting and tavern nights lit my the stars and candle light, when laughter was a comforting sound and the people were welcoming of them. On those nights they both cherished.
And as the years went on and Uther passed and Arthur became king did he finally allow himself to court Merlin properly, in the light of day amongst many people, no longer holding fear and secret. Magic was returned to the land and they built Albion together from top to bottom as years passed. Druids were welcomed back to the citidale and any practice of magic was legalized. Though that of ill will and intent would swiftly find themselves at the feet of Emrys.
And as the bells rang day end and night out it signaled the final union of the two. Arthur taking Merlin as his husband. The kings consort. To rule by his side for ever and always.
And as the people looked upon them with peace and true happiness in a longer time then any would rather admit, they saw, they saw how in love the two were. Irrevocable and unconditional soul bound, so in love.
People would strive to find a love like the king and his magical consort. None ever coming close but always finding their happiness in the end.
And as the ages went by and Arthur retired the throne, he and Merlin went off to a land over on the other side of the forest, built a cottage and become farmers, a simple and truly happy life Arthur always wanted with Merlin. Their friends knew where to find them and if Canelot should ever raise her calls of need they would head her and help.
And that is how they spent out the rest of their days.
In flowered meadows and trickling streams, on grassy hills and sunny trees, on a breeze so light and warm and the air filled with honey and all things of comfort.
That's how Arthur and Merlin spent it with one another. No longer with secret touches or fluttering gazes. But instead with prolonged touches and eyes staring for hours in the simple being of each other.
They loved wholly and truly.
And that's how they ended.
In love and at peace.

sorceress-queen + canon!Arthur (a prelude)
@sorceress-queen
Tumblr media
His heart beats. The shouting of his knights grows louder. Steel blades flash in the darkness. Lightning strikes upon the bodies of the invaders that sought to steal the land from Arthur’s people. To rape and pillage the villages; the towns and the city of Camelot. Yet the Saxons would never take precedence here; Albion is far too old and ancient already. She has withstood the tides of conquest and occupation over centuries of war between natives and outsiders. Arthur is only her most recently-chosen warrior king, and young indeed is he, only 31 summers of age, on this day-
The day that Arthur Pendragon must die.
Blood clings to his legs, to his arms, spattered across his chest. Not only his, but those of all the many fathers, brothers and sons he has killed on the battlefield. The fair-haired child of summer turns hardened, crystal-blue eyes upon the bodies of the dead. He took no pleasure in this; and yet he knew and accepted the cost demanded of his bloodline. To be named Protector of the People, is to bear the hopes and safeguard the dreams of a nation.
In the end, the life of a King mattered not. It is the Kingdom that must endure.
Tumblr media
Guinevere will make a fine Queen in his absence.
His heart beats. Every step he takes is laborious and slow. He is dying. The knights are falling back; confused and mesmerised in equal measure by the sheer power incarnate in the form of a wizened figure on a hill. Briefly does Arthur turn his gaze upon Camelot’s most unlikely saviour. Miraculous. Beautiful.
His attentions then return to rubble underfoot; to the soft sound of running water, bubbling up from a hidden spring nearby. Is he delirious? Some say that in the final moments of your life, you begin to see your life unwind backwards. All the way back; to the moment you first drew breath.
The son of Uther Pendragon falls upon his knees. His sword clatters upon the ground; loosened from his hand. Dripping crimson tears; the blade of a warrior longs to retire from the carnage of a life of death and broken dreams.
Albion should have been reunited into one Kingdom. One land of peace and prosperity. But it was not to be.
Tumblr media
At least…  at least, the young king has led the charge to save his people one last time from invaders wishing to impose their rule. It is a vicious cycle. One that Arthur, the prince of peace, in the end had been unable to break. Not in this lifetime, at least.
Life. Indeed, is a precious gift; but Destiny would not have him live beyond this day.
The broken shard of the blade of Arthur’s once most cherished knight sinks deeper into his chest.
Mordred’s betrayal eats away into his body, stealing the final moments of life from the young king. Arthur falls upon the barren earth, rolling over onto his back to stare up at the waning stars. The dawn is approaching. Soon, the light of the sun would rise upon the battlefield of Camlann, and the true cost of all who perished here will be made naked in the dawn.
It is time now to sleep. Yet, Arthur groans as his eyes close.
His heart still continues to beat.
Tumblr media
Where is Guinevere? Where is Merlin? Where are the two people closest to him; where are they in this hour - when he must at last succumb to the honour that came with being a knight of the realm?
For there is no greater form of love, than to lay down your life for your friends.
___
Arthur is unconscious when she finds him. There are no words that can be said. No promises or apologies accepted. Only choices that have to be made.
Tumblr media
She betrayed him. She took his naivety and turned him into something that has haunted the blond prince every waking moment since. Not lovers in this lifetime, but oh… how easily they could have slipped into that. Once upon time. Arthur never once stopped hoping that she could be saved. That he could bring her back from the path of hatred and revenge she had chosen to walk in her moment of despair and weakness.
But it was too late, the die had already been cast.
And once again, Morgana would take the fate of Albion into her hands this day.

Final Part 5: The Real Limit
The final chapter in “The Human Planet” begins with a quote by Lewis Mumford: “Every culture lives within its dream.”1 Dreams are the ultimate limit. While we likely encounter other constraints in the ongoing formation and changes of our cultures and selves, our aims are dictated by what we can conceive. This is as true for an individual as it is for a culture. To broaden the scope of a culture’s dreams starts with broadening those of individuals. And before broadening the dreams of other individuals, one must do so with their own.
Lewis and Maslin assert that there are only three possible outcomes for humanity. First, they entertain the possibility that business as usual, as in “the continued development of the consumer capitalist mode of living towards greater complexity” could survive the challenges brought on by human impact on the environment. 2 I do not want to linger here as I agree with Lewis and Maslin that this is highly unlikely. However, I think its important emphasize that even if the system was certain to sustain itself indefinitely, that, fundamentally, would not be a desirable outcome. The system simply does not maximize the possibilities of human life for the vast majority of the people within it. Lewis and Maslin provide an exceptionally concise summary of the core of the system: “In today’s world [people] are required to sell their labour in order to obtain what they need to live. People must work and continually increase their productivity--if they don’t somebody more productive will replace them. For this people earn, on average, more money over time, with which they buy more goods and services to live better. The owners of the resources live on the profits they extract from the labour-sellers, and reinvest some of those profits in order to further increase productivity to produce more goods and services.” 3 It is clear that this reduces human flourishing, even for those who succeed within the system, to a very narrow thing: the consumption of more goods and services to make life better. This is not to minimize the value of having enough material resources to live well. That is important. However, it is not what makes a human life worth living. At least not for me.
I think the essence of the fallacy consumer capitalism is built on, that we must constantly pursue more to improve our lives, is beautifully captured in the tale of the Mexican Fisherman told by Mark Albion (from the assigned materials for March 2nd). In the story, a young traveler, a businessman with an MBA, asks a fisherman why he has not caught more fish. He replies, “I catch enough to support my family and I live a full and busy life.” He explains his daily routine, which includes time to work, but also time for family, and music, and wine, and teaching. The MBA replies by explaining steps the man could take to build a fishing empire over time. At each step, the fisherman asks the question, “then what?” After becoming a millionaire a million times over, the MBA explains, realizing his foolishness, the fisherman would be able to retire to a small village, fish a little, spend time with his family, teach the children to fish, and play guitar with his wife. 4 The moral is simple and profound: The man already had enough, and he knew it. Growth could do nothing for him. The strange part of this is, we can all recognize that the fisherman’s life is good. We understand why it is good, since it is what we would hope to retire to. But somehow, our culture has convinced us that first we must participate in the charade of growing for growth’s sake. Simply put, consumer capitalism has no governing concept of enough. The question of, “how much is enough?” is rarely asked and answered with solidity. Instead, we reach for ever more, with many of us knowing on some level that what we are doing is ridiculous and empty. That is the dream our culture has created, and it is a dream that many of us, whether we like it or not, live inside both in ways that we recognize and ways we do not. And we, within that system, are the “winners,” who have attained the best or close to the best it has to offer. If that dream was not morally unconscionable for its impact on the future, it would still be an unacceptable burden on the human soul.
Tumblr media
Figure 1, The MBA and the Mexican Fisherman 5
I subscribe to Lewis and Maslin’s argument that the two positive feedback loops capitalism relies on, “the solving of problems via the scientific method, which improves technology, thereby allowing greater numbers of problems to be solved; and the investment of profits into the production of ever more profits, which requires ever-more energy inputs,” cannot continue indefinitely given the finitude of the system (the planet) on which we live and that their cessation (or dramatic change) may be closer than we think. 6 However, what does worry me is our apparent desire to hold on to our current way of living for as long as possible, even if it means denying reality. This fact was made painstakingly clear to me by the presented information about the projections used to draw up the terms of the Paris Climate Accord, that this is exactly what we are doing as a world. As Lewis and Maslin succinctly put it, “modelling scenarios...are narratives in mathematical form.” The modelling narrative told to make the Paris Climate Accord look like it can lead to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 is at best laughably optimistic and at worst a conscious lie. The models rely heavily on the deployment of Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS). There are two methods of this, one of which involves, “collecting the waste carbon dioxide from fossil fuel-burning power plants and burying it underground to keep it safely out of the atmosphere.” The second is to “grow crops and trees for fuel, burn them in a power station to produce electricity, and capture the waste carbon dioxide, again by burying it.” 7 In essence, the models “use historical precedent to set the expected maximum pace of emission reduction, which leaves lots of remaining fossil fuel emissions. The models then use BECCS to square that with the much smaller actual carbon budget to keep emissions below 2 degrees Celsius” 8 In order to make the models work, BECCS would have to store “1300 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide which is larger than the total amount of carbon dioxide we are allowed to emit if we are going to limit global warming to 2 degrees celsius.” To do that would require, “15,000 of these plants...running. Moreover it has become clear that carbon capture and storage is more complex than expected.” 9 One might argue that the models are simply realistic in that they set a maximum pace of emissions reductions and try to work with that. However, we are, as a species, hedging a tremendous bet on an unproven technology being deployed at a colossal scale. That does not seem so realistic. Why are we doing this? To quote Lewis and Maslin, “because it puts off taking action now.” I have to admit that this was wildly disappointing to read, and this is exactly the type of thing that makes me assume we are headed for the second option Lewis and Maslin posit: Collapse.
Tumblr media
Figure 2, Graph showing significant role of BECCS in Reaching Paris Climate Targets 10
When Lewis and Maslin imagine futures where not enough is done to keep global warming to a manageable level, they do not definitively answer the question of whether this would trigger total collapse of interconnected civilization. They do however make the point that a world where emissions are not quickly cut to zero would be one of “dizzying social, environmental, social and political change to deal with the failures to curb earlier problems.” Furthermore, on whether this could be sustainable, they state that, “[i]t is worth recalling what we have learnt from the collapse of various aricultural societies in the past: societies often get more complex as they solve problems, but when the marginal returns on these investments in complexity is lost, some of this complexity is lost. This loss is another way of saying that they collapse.” 11 What can be lost in discussions of diminishing complexity is that collapse entails human suffering on a colossal scale. The collapse of ecosystems will bring on the collapse of food supply chains and economies. The collapse of geopolitical stability resulting from this will bring on war. “Some complexity” being lost may sound like an acceptable option due to Lewis and Maslin’s gentle word choice, but it entails an unimaginable human cost that cannot be even entertained. Still, I have to admit that in my rational mind, I see this as the most likely option. Nothing in Lewis and Maslin’s chapter inspired realistic hope in me that this can be avoided. I continue to think, and many of the trends they describe in the chapter bear this out, that consumer capitalism is deeply entrenched and will likely require a massive shock, perhaps something on the order of this collapse, to be fundamentally restructured. The will to do enough to prevent catastrophic warming, which would almost by its nature mean making dramatic changes to capitalism, quite simply does not seem to be there right now. Perhaps there will come a day in the future when it is, but drastic action has to start happening now or extremely soon if we hope to prevent catastrophic warming. I cannot rationally envision this happening.
It is here that I encounter not only my culture’s limits for dreams of the future, but my own. I do not want to be somebody who accepts the inevitability of collapse. I want to be somebody who believes in and works for the creation of the third way Lewis and Maslin imagine as possible: a radical change in our mode of living. And yet, I have quite a hard time dreaming of this future as they do without thinking myself naive. The best argument I can offer myself is that if I accept the impossibility of such a future, then I help to absolutely guarantee that impossibility. However, if I dedicate myself to the third way, even if I cannot rationally justify why I think it is possible, there remains some possibility, even if it is small, that I will be a part of bringing it about. Thankfully, there is so much that I do not know, least of all the future. And there will always be solace in what is yet to be.

Nice to meet you. Bonjour !

5 Residences with Big Garages –
We look at five standout residences that have serious space for cars, boats, and any other outdoor toys
.
6501 South County Line Road (Burr Ridge, Illinois)
A 22-car heated garage is the standout star of this 30,000-square-foot estate. The eight-bedroom property, located just 30 minutes from downtown Chicago, also includes another 15,000 square feet of covered terraces. After attending to your automotive collection, retire to an imperial master suite that includes a custom walk-in dressing room and two separate showers. You can then enjoy a meal prepared from the expansive, pro-grade kitchen and relax in any of the outdoor living spaces. It is listed through Christie’s International Real Estate/Conlon for $10.95 million.

568 Senanus Drive (Saanichton, B.C.)
If most of your toys are of the maritime variety, this waterfront estate 30 minutes north of Victoria is the home for you. The 5.95-acre parcel has 800 feet of shoreline with two deepwater docks and a registered boathouse. Inside, the 10-bedroom main house features classic Pacific Northwest decor with updated styling, bay-facing windows, and a totem pole rising in the midst of the home’s main staircase. Should you need a break from tending to your vessels, the property also includes horse stables, a riding ring, and a separate recreation center. It is on sale through Christie’s International Real Estate/Newport Realty for $4.54 million.

8593 South Albion Basin Road (Alta, Utah)
This four-bedroom residence is located just minutes above the Alta ski resort—and it even includes a Snowcat to get you to town. The nine-passenger machine glides through the heavy Utah winter with ease (the gravel road is easy to navigate in the summer). The property itself is an architectural beauty designed to take advantage of dramatic mountain views from every room. It’s available through Luxury Portfolio International/Windermere Real Estate Utah for $3.9 million.
The home comes with your very own Snowcat.  Photo Credit: Courtesy
6479 144th Avenue (Holland, Michigan)
This ultimate lake house sits on 40 gated acres near the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. While the four-bedroom residence is special on its own, the property’s defining feature is a short walk down a temperature-controlled tunnel. That walkway leads to a 12,000-square-foot, two-story garage capable of housing all of your weekend machines. The building was conceived both as a shop for works in progress and as a place to show off the end results. You’ll also be able to entertain plenty of friends and family on the custom outdoor terrace with prep space and in-ground pool. The sum of its features equals a special getaway excellent for a quick stay or long-term rest and relaxation. It is listed through Beacon Sotheby’s International for $4.95 million.

Oceana Bal Harbour (Miami, Florida)
The former Bal Harbour Club in Miami is being transformed into a striking 28-floor, 240-unit oceanfront condominium building. Those lucky enough to own one of its eight penthouses (priced from $25 million) will have access to a private underground garage with enough room to park four cars. Having a penthouse with its own four-car garage is a perk rarely found in residential condominiums—and it’s especially unusual in Miami buildings because of the city’s low water levels. Residents can request any of their prized cars through a valet app service; washing and cleaning is offered on-site, as well.
The penthouses come with four-car garages.  Photo Credit: Courtesy
