I can't even begin to describe how much I love this soundtrack! It's my most played on my music app and I listen to it on repeat whenever I read a George Smiley book.

Jazz Factory Recommends - George Smiley by Alberto Iglesias, from the soundtrack for Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy. Listen now on the Jazz Factory Recommends playlist on Spotify spoti.fi/2ppq7TG.
This is a bit of a different JFR. I re-watched Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy last night and aside from thoroughly enjoying it I noticed just how brilliant the music was. I’ve picked out one track here, titled George Smiley after Gary Oldman’s character, but the whole album is sublime. I can’t find any info about the performers but the score is written by Alberto Iglesias. The soundtrack isn’t a really Jazz score but the theme for George Smiley definitely is. Opening with soft strings and piano, light and playful drums and entirely gorgeous trumpet (maybe flugel horn?) solo, George Smiley sets a densely rich atmosphere for the film. It is slightly mysterious, slightly melancholic and depressive but fully beautiful and absorbing. Without warning an orchestral string motif appears and it changes to a faster and lighter tone, but before long it slows again with the drums playing throughout (which helps ground the piece) and finally that wonderful brass solo returns, this time muted. The main musical ‘theme’ is the featured melody here and returns sporadically in the soundtrack. I don’t know much about film soundtracks, I normally don’t notice them (which I think is meant to be a good thing?) but i definitely noticed this one and it blew me away. If you enjoy the atmosphere here, I’d suggest also listening to Miles Davis’s famous soundtrack for L'ascenseur pour l'échafaud which I may also feature on JFR in the future.

I don’t feel like our love is brand new. There must have been lovers, soulmates, before us, experiencing what we get to have. And it’s giving me comfort to imagine there will be many more like us to come. Our kind of love is the kind of love that makes this rotten world worth living in.
prince simon in madrid
a pilgrimage along the world that @prince-simon created 🥹
Tumblr media
Simon’s neighbourhood, Chueca
“It’s actually the Queer Neighbourhood of Madrid, and coincidentally also where I live.” He lowered his voice as if to tell a secret, “It’s actually not a coincidence at all.” (chapter 2)
Tumblr media
Casa de Campo (view from the Royal Palace lol oop)
Wilhelm didn’t even recognise himself. He didn’t think he’d ever looked that happy. And Simon… his eyes were closed and his curls were a mess and Wilhelm had never seen anyone more beautiful. (chapter 3)
Tumblr media
El Retiro
Simon looked at Wilhelm much too adoringly for a statement this goofy. “The ducks are gay!” He yelled at Santiago and Paula, “Just so you know!” (chapter 9)
Tumblr media
Palacio de Cristal
“Here’s a funny thought - bear with me, okay? But just imagine. Flowers. Everywhere, like on the ceiling, up the walls. Fairy lights scattered all through it. It would be so gorgeous as a- uh, like. For a wedding…” Realising where his train of thought had gotten him, Wilhelm fell quiet, looking at Simon with wide eyes. (chapter 9)
Tumblr media
El Palacio Real de Madrid (more specifically the Throne Room lmfao)
Simon traced his fingers over the bruises on Wilhelm’s neck and in the opening of his dress shirt, humming contentedly. Wilhelm followed the movement in the mirror, and marvelled at how good they looked together, how well they fit together and how much Simon belonged right here – on the throne, with Wilhelm. He deserved the world and so much more. (chapter 12)
Tumblr media
Museo Nacional del Prado
Around them, the other visitors kept moving, admiring the art on the walls, and for the moment Wilhelm felt infinite, imagining himself a painting, looked at and analysed hundreds of years from now. El Abrazo de los Príncipes.
Tumblr media
Lo Spasimo, Raphael, 1515-1517
“Are we allowed to kiss in front of Jesus on his way to crucifixion or is that tasteless? Because I really want to kiss you right now, Simon.”
Tumblr media
Las Meninas, Diego Velázquez, 1656
“He made me look at Velázquez in the painting and how he was looking back at the viewer, at me. I still remember the exact tone of his voice, how he was so certain when he told me that I had every right to be where I am. That I am the subject of this painting, the king being painted. All those tyrants, King Felipe and Emmanuel and all those that came in between, they are trapped in that mirror forever while I am here, alive, we’re here. Velázquez is looking at two queer princes, ready to paint us.” (chapter 13)
Tumblr media
Casa Alberto
“So, tell me more about this special part of Madrileñan history.” He was slightly teasing but mostly actually curious.
Simon seemed all too eager to answer that question, and it hit Wilhelm how genuine Simon’s care for his city — his country — and its people was. It made him a little sad to know that a lot of people didn’t get to see that because they only focused on Simon being too gay or too Latino, or even just too carefree and enjoying life because he was young, to be their future king.

Iglesia de San Antonio de los Alemanes (where Simon goes to church)
“I think I need to go somewhere.”
“Oh?” Wilhelm said softly, “Right now?”
Simon hesitated before he nodded. “I need to- get some clarity? Or - I hope that I’ll get it there?” He whispered, voice shaky.
“Do you want to tell me where you’re going?”
“To- uh, to pray? I mean- to church? I don’t know if I’ll pray…” Simon’s voice was shaky, uncertainty shining in his eyes when he dared to look up at Wilhelm. (chapter 11)

Do you think that 10y ago the ascension of podemos at the spanish parlament broke the rampant spanish bipartidism? I remembered how everybody during those elections claimed for the "voto util" and to not vote for third parties. I never could place podemos (and now sumar) as anything but the typical "lefty" party but only as a façade, all theory but nothing practical, so now im questioning if there is a presence of communist-leaning in the spanish parlament.
Finally getting asks about Spanish politics :)
While nominally, yes, bipartidism was broken after the 15M, what actually happened was that these new parties became crutches for PSOE and PP. Criticism of bipartidism was beginning to gain a lot of traction, and what these parties allowed the big two to do is remain with the same dynamics of bipartidism but not only address the critics of bipartidism, but in practice gain a wider base of support in the form of all of those voters disillusioned with the established parties but willing to support the new ones. For example, let's take the case of Podemos, which you mentioned. Before, there were millions of voters to the left of PSOE unwilling to support their perceived staleness. Podemos conglomerated all of these voters, and not only the orphaned voters, but also eventually integrated IU into itself, which up until the 15M was the largest party left of the PSOE. And through the relatively stable alliance and eventual coallition, the PSOE was able to govern with the support of these millions of voters who would have otherwise not really been behind them. The same process happened with Ciudadanos and the PP.
Electoral strategy in Spain is not as clear cut as in, say, the US, where only one party can win and the executive branch is elected by an entity separate from congress. Because governments can be created through coalitions, there is no spoiler effect, voting third party does not make the other side win, necessarily, and therefore there is no "useful vote".
Sumar only renewed this new dynamic, but worse. Voters got sick of Podemos, and once Iglesias left, the party fell apart. Especially once entire regions of the party began to leave citing complaints about the leadership not listening to them. Even greater parts of the sphere to the left of PSOE is within Sumar, including the PCE by proxy of IU, but I'll get to them later.
The bickering that happened sporadically throughout the first coalition, that then grew louder towards the end, and doesn't seem to have died down that much with Sumar, is, functionally, the same bickering that happens between the different currents within a large party. For all intents and purposes, Sumar functions like a specially autonomous wing of the PSOE that is also branded different, analogous but not equivalent to the relationship between PSOE and PSC.
And in any case, even if these new parties were actually, meaningfully separate and different from PSOE, no, there are no communists in parliament. You're probably thinking of Alberto Garzón, who is a member of the PCE and IU and former minister of consumption, he is a self-described communist. Following the ascension of Carrillo to general secretary of the PCE, and especially after the first elections in 1978 (although these tendencies already existed before Carrillo, let's be honest), the party chose to follow the policy of "national conciliation", following in the wake of the eurocommunist tendency in the second half of the last century, basically crystallizing social-democratic principles at the heart of the PCE.
It became fully ingrained within the party after the destruction of the USSR, and even though the party nominally "returned to marxism-leninism" in 2017 or so, the only change that has been effected is one of approaching IU and PSOE more and more each year. Let's not forget the PCE has been in government during the arm sales to Israel before and right after al-Aqsa flood, let's not forget the shameful labor reform they approved and help pass, and let's not forget their tacit support for NATO throughout their various passes in government, but especially in the Madrid summit of 2021. These people are not communists, they're run-of-the-mill social-democrats who just so happen to be in the historical communist party.
