Ride with a Former Pro Cyclist & Grand Tour Champion at the Total Energies Gran Fondo Alberto Contador
Photo: Total Energies Gran Fondo Alberto Contador Although it’s September and the riding season is starting to slow down, there are still many good cycling days ahead with warm days and cool nights. And if you find yourself near Valencia, Spain later this month and you’re seeking a unique event, then the Total Energies Gran Fondo Alberto Contador might be a fun diversion. Who is Alberto…

comprehensive list of my favorite cycling moments in no particular order
the Mont Ventoux incident: twelfth stage of the 2016 tour de france. Sir Chris Froome is comfortbaly leading both the stage and the GC, wearing the maillot jaune. Less than 1k to go and the unthinkable happens: too many people are standing on the road and one of the motorbikes at the front suddenly brakes, resulting in one insane shot of Richie Porte face-planting against the camera. The result? Both Bauke Mollema and Chris Froome crash (no injuries for them, luckily) and Chris Froome's bike BREAKS. PANIC. It's very important to note that at this point team cars are stuck behind and are unable to reach him (both because of the narrow street and the absolutely staggerig amount of people there). So what does Chris Froome do? He starts running marathon style, ready to defend his advantage on the other GC guys tooth and nail. In the end he did keep his lead (after a bike swap from hell and twenty minutes under an amount of stress that could have killed a horse) but BOY was it an Experience to watch live.
the tiny couch of Milano-Sanremo 2023: otheriwise known as the one bed trope cycling adaptation and, in my opinion, a mandatory addition to every post-race waiting room. Not a single person on this couch wanted to be there apart from pippo, who was doing a very bad job at hiding his amusement. Look at this, incredible.
Lorenzo Fortunato's win and Alberto Contador's consequent metal breakdown: overall an incredibly wholesome moment from the 2021 Giro D'Italia. Lorenzo Fortunato (then 25 years old, relatively new and upcoming rider) attacks on the Zoncolan, one of the most famous and gruelling climbs of the Giro: everybody’s rooting for the kid, who then goes on to win the stage all by himself, reaching the top through apocalyptic weather. Admirable, right? Well, while all this was unfolding, Alberto Contador (who was at the time Eolo-Kometa's team manager) was live on Insta pacing around and having an absolute Moment on camera, literally hyperventilating and crying, begging everything and everyone for his protegé to win. He then went on to promise to ride from Pinto (his hometown) to Milan as a celebration. Iconic.
Sepp Kuss' Vuelta victory: AKA the birth of a legend and of my personal GC Kuss agenda. Vuelta de España, 2023: domestique extraoirdinaire Sepp Kuss wins his first stage and he's VERY elated about it (as we all are, tbh), smiling and high-fiving people even before crossing the finish line. On the podium he truly becomes man of the people by chugging down half a bottle of champagne without batting an eye: man of the people right there. By this point no one is really thinking anything of it, we’re all just vibing, happy for a rider who is partecipating in his THIRD CONSECUTIVE Grand Tour of the year. But THEN. It slowly starts becoming clearer and clearer that Jumbo-Visma (rip) has not one, not two, but THREE (3) possible final GC contenders, which is alone a very bonkers concept. In the end Sepp manages to keep the lead despite what looks like a messy (?) situation management from Jumbo-Visma and a stage finish on Angliru where the Jumbo-Vismen seem to be riding all for themselves, sprinting away from Sepp. All in all a display of incredible strenght by both the team (winner of ALL three Grand Tours with THREE DIFFERENT riders. INSANE) and Sepp himself.
Last time trial stage of the 2020 Tour de France: I could easily write a PHD thesis about this day alone. NOTHING encapsulates the drama of sports quite like this particular moment. In one already very odd Tour de France, ridden in mid-September due to Covid restrictions, Primož Roglic absolutely DOMINATES the GC from the very beginning: his team is strong and he keeps the yellow jersey up until the end, to the point where nobody really expects anything major to happen. Cue Tadej Pogačar (called by the italian commentators "il ragazzino terribile" aka "the terrible boy"), fellow countryman of Primož: he’s won a couple of stages and he's shown his worth, finding himself in a very honorable second place in the GC with a 57'' gap from the leader. Which could mean nothing. SO. Here comes the final TT, the very last chance for riders to try and make up some time before Paris: Primož is an excellent TT rider and he's got enough time over Tadej, which should grant him a comfortable victory or, at least, not too much lost time, right? WRONG. OH BOY. Tragedy unfolds as soon as Tadej starts his race and makes it clear that he's out for BLOOD: he clearly doesn't care about second place, he wants the yellow!!!!!! And so we're stuck at home, watching silently as this KID slowly makes up time, second by painful second, all while Primož is having the mother of all shit days on the bike, struggling so much that it becomes harder and harder for him to maintain his hard-earned lead. Tadej goes on to win the stage (surpassing Tom Dumoulin and Wout van Aert, who had both ridden an incredible TT) and, more importantly, his fist Tour at just 21 years old. I still get chills thinking about it. Fun fact: in Paris, Tadej wil also wear both the white and the polka-dot jersey. Totally normal behaviour.
Giulio Ciccone and his close call with excommunication: Tirreno-Adriatico 2023. Giulio is giving out an interview to a fellow italian journalist after the stage, when suddenly one team car speeds up behind him and very narrowly misses him, almost clipping his bike in the process. The result is Giulio breathing life into the infamous "porca mado.....nza", which is a revised version of an extremely NASTY type of blasphemy against the virgin mary. Iconic in its own way, threatened to take down catholicism as a whole in one clean swoop. 10/10.
Geraint Thomas' leadout for Mark Cavendish: last stage of the 2023 Giro d'Italia, Geraint Thomas has made peace with the fact that he’s lost his chance at winning La maglia Rosa. The peloton is steadily approaching the finish line and sprinters are getting ready to give it all for the win: suddenly, we see Geraint Thomas putting himself right in front of the leading group, effectively becoming Mark Cavendish's leadout man, guiding him to a beautiful final win in Rome (mind you, this was supposed to be Mark's last year before retirement). They're not teammates, so Geraint Thomas had no reason to do it except for the fact that he's known Mark for the better part of twenty years and he wanted to help him: INSANE narratives, we all cried at the sight of the two old men embracing eachother like little kids. SIGH
2023 Road-Race World Championship. This place has everything: rainy weather, beautiful landscapes, highland cows, Mathieu van der Poel taking a dump in a newly renovated house, childhood rivals standing together on a podium, Pogi in neon green. Also known as the day Mathieu van der Poel went from Good Rider to Insane Supernatural Being: from attacking with 20k to go in what probably was the hardest course ever designed in a Road Race World Championship ever, falling down while all the team cars were unreachable, tearing off a piece of his own fucked up shoe because it was bothering him, to winning while sopping wet and crying. INSANE. Bonus: this absurd newspaper front page that I wish I had framed in my living room.

Cycling, a sport that inspires me
A love of cycling
I discovered my passion for bicycles when I was very young. Before getting on a motorbike, I had already tried it all on my bicycle. For me, it was as if my bicycle were a motorbike! I started riding motorbikes from a very young age, but at that time I thought that if it didn’t work out, I wanted to be a cyclist.
Now I only go cycling to stay in shape and enjoy myself. I love cycling up mountain passes and I get a kick out of beating my times whenever I do the same route again. I have to keep myself in check so that I don’t go overboard and get carried away. It’s not a good idea to go flat out every day. You have to be smart when training and know when to take a break for a few days. Even though I don’t cycle professionally, I take it seriously and get annoyed when I see that my times are off and when my pace is not as good as the last time.
Another thing I like about cycling is that you can adapt it to your own fitness level. For example, during winter I remove the outer chainring as I barely use it. When my legs feel stronger, I look for the best way to improve, adding the chainring or really upping my cadence.
The best part is cycling as a group. The time and distance fly by when you are in good company, and it is also a way of getting better quality training. I still enjoy the days that I cycle alone though as it’s a different approach; I have to look for motivation from within.
Bicycle collector
The bicycle itself plays a big role and I use a Pinarello Dogma F10 fitted with Shimano. The key to choosing a bicycle is to find one that fits just right, that weighs very little, and that has a high quality carbon frame, not forgetting about the look of the bike.
Years ago, I decided to start a collection of all of my bikes because of all the unforgettable memories and experiences I’ve had on them. Many of my sporting accomplishments have been achieved when using cycling for training. I have fond memories of those tough times that I faced, pedalling with all my strength on a steep climb.
I now have a wonderful collection of Pinarellos. It is a selection of bikes that represents the changing times and fashions and when you look at them all together, you can see the differences in technology and colours used over the years.
A passion for professional cycling
Purito was my favourite cyclist because of his explosive power, but now that he is retired, I have my eye on other Spanish cyclists, like Alejandro Valverde and Alberto Contador. I’m also looking forward to seeing who will be the next rising star to keep us entertained. In recent years, Froome, Quintana, Nibali and Alberto Contador are the cyclists we’ve seen competing for the big titles. So who knows who might surprise us this year.
If I had to choose my favourite cycling stage it would definitely be the Alps. I’ve had a great time cycling there myself and it’s the best area. The Dolomites stages are really tough and I’ve suffered cycling up those passes, but it feels amazing when you finally reach the top.
When watching cycling on TV, I prefer to watch the bigger tours. I tend to watch them more often, although it is easy to get hooked on the classics with the exciting shows they put on.
My experience cycling
I have taken part in a tour cycling race before, and I know that in this sport it’s difficult to position yourself, to know if the group got broken up, or if you’re at the front. That is why it’s vital to wear an earpiece because it helps a lot in this regard. There has been a lot of talk about whether using an earpiece disrupts the competition, but nobody can deny that it increases rivalry between the cyclists and makes for a better show.
I’ve sometimes thought about taking part in Paris-Roubaix, but when I consider how tough it is, it puts me off. My brother has cycled in it. He has told me what it’s like and to be honest, it looks way easier on TV than it is in real life. I don’t think it would be my favourite race if I ever did cycle in it.
I hope you’ve enjoyed hearing about my passion for cycling. As always, thanks to all Box Repsol followers for reading and for your unconditional support. See you at the track!

It was that phrase I remember hearing it and being like that sounds so cool but I need the context and that’s actually pretty amazing that Spain was dominating so hard in the 2010s that they were like what else can I beat you at. Makes more sense now why Marc was saying it considering his most success came in those years. Those were the years that Rafa was dominating tennis to wasn’t it?
Rafa was dominating tennis, Alberto Contador was following in the steps of the long-retired Miguel Indurain and sweeping the Tour de France and La Vuelta a España in cyclying (he’s since been stripped of some titles due to doping scandals if I’m not mistaken, but back in the day nobody knew), Marc was obviously coming up hard and fast and everyone could tell he was going to be a MotoGP miracle, Alonso had 2 drivers championships under his belt and was still proving he was a fucking F1 beast by consistently putting possibly the worst car Ferrari has ever made in the points/podium weekend in and weekend out; most of the big Spanish football teams from La Liga were regularly wiping out other massive European clubs in international competitions, the Gasol brothers were well on their way to NBA history… the late 2000s/early 2010s truly was the period when the considerable investment Spain as a nation made in sports leading up to and following the 92 Barcelona Olympics started paying dividends, you could say.

Drug usage within the sporting community – A dangerous epidemic? Or a chance for change?
“The sad thing about doping is how much it obscures our appreciation of greatness” – Malcom Gladwell
Drugs-use has been an ongoing societal problem. Within the sporting world, athletes are commonly regarded as role models for promoting health and wellbeing.
Stereotypically, drug abusers are thought to be anyone but high-profile professional athletes. It is therefore, surprising that drugs within sport are becoming more prevalent and publicised.
Drug-use in competitive sport specifically, is an issue that has been around for many years, dating back to the ‘remarkable’ performance of East Germany in the 1972 Summer Olympics. Nowadays, drug-use is prevalent, with the sporting world having expanded significantly both financially and socially. Consequently, the risk to reward factor of competitions are greater, therefore placing more pressure on individuals to perform at the highest level possible, creating a fast becoming crisis.
According to Hildebrandt et al. (2011) Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) are ‘substances used for improving one’s performance and likelihood for personal achievement’.
Some of the most commonly used PEDs include:
Steroids – often hormones that are taken illegally by athletes to increase muscle mass or strength.
Human Growth Hormone – a substance that is injected by athletes in order to help them recover faster from injuries, which can lead to negative side effects such as diabetes or cancer.
Blood doping – when an athlete injects themselves with their own blood or someone else’s to boost their oxygen levels.
If you are interested in the effect these drugs have on your body, view the short clip below:
‘What Do Performance-Enhancing Drugs Do To Your Body?’
A quick Google News search around the term ‘doping’ in sport presented over 7,500 results. Evidently this illustrates the scale of the ‘epidemic’ problem we are facing.
Some of the historic cases include, drug use in the youth Olympics to a more famous case in the 2010 Tour de France involving Alberto Contador.
With drug-use in sport being such a problem, it becomes easy for us – the public - to take a critical stance, demonising drugs in sport and those involved.
However, it’s important to understand both sides, and why athletes may participate in this ‘illegal’ activity before judging and forming your opinion.
Personally, my opinions surrounding drug-use don’t condone nor criticise. I ruminate between two viewpoints and consider the specifics of each situation (e.g., what the drugs are being used for).
One viewpoint you could investigate when considering drugs in sport, is that PEDs create an unfair advantage amongst athletes. Traditional sporting values of fair-play and equality are sacrificed as a result and therefore we should maintain the strict regulations against drugs.
This perspective mirrors similar views to Houlihan’s which feature in chapter 16 of his book ‘sport and sociology’.
With the laws on drug-use in sport now being very strict, due to the potential rewards behind gaining a competitive advantage, the emergence of transgender athletes in sport has taken a significant impact because of certain hormonal drugs now being prohibited. This means that athletes will need to either raise their testosterone levels to be in with a fair chance of winning in male categories of sport or lower their testosterone levels so that their ability isn’t miles ahead of other competitors in female categories of sport.
Due to this, female athletes transitioning to male athletes and vice versa, will face significant scrutiny when seeking to compete, which has already been shown when Sebastian Coe recently stated that “biology trumps identity” and that “fairness is non-negotiable”.
This leads me onto my alternative viewpoint. This involves a margin of allowance for PEDs so that injured athletes can accelerate their recovery in order to minimise the anxiety and pressure surrounding physical or mental impairment, as well as other reasons why athletes may choose to self-medicate.
Whilst being monitored, this perspective can then be implemented to positively impact transgender individuals wishing to compete in sport, demonstrating inclusivity – one of sports’ traditional values.
Have a Think…
As the sporting world is regarded as a community, our primary concern should be the welfare of the athlete.
If a drug does not expose an athlete to excessive risk, should we allow it even if it enhances performance?
If countries have the money to train at altitude and adapt their bodies whilst some countries don’t, does taking respiratory improving drugs close that advantage gap and makes things fairer?
Should we dismiss this entirely and return to historic beliefs, or should we rethink the meaning of sport as a 21st century society? The crusade against drugs has failed and will continue to fail, so rather than fearing drugs in sport, should we not embrace it?
“Performance enhancement is not against the spirit of sport; it is the spirit of sport. To choose to be better is to be human. The legalisation of drugs in sport may be fairer and safer” – J. Savulescu

Saudades!
