Stepdad!William Afton x Reader "Barbecue" - Mature/Drabble [ 1 ]
FNAF | William Afton (stepdad!) x (f) Reader | MATURE Warnings: Mention of arousal, Jealousy. AN: Wrote a quick drabble. For my Grabber fans, he is my favorite neighbor to crossover with (: Enjoy.
Tumblr media
The sun beat down on your exposed skin as you stood in the backyard, the scent of sizzling meat filling the air. You were dressed to impress, hot pants hugging your curves and a tight top that left little to the imagination. Your neighbor Mr. Shaw manned the barbecue, his chestnut hair cascading down to his shoulders, the roots already touched by grey revealing his age.
"Great day for a barbecue," he smiled at you, his eyes twinkling with warmth.
"Absolutely," you agreed. You came to stand next to him, hungrily trying to have a peek to see if anything your taste was being put on there.
The conversation was casual and rather dull at first, with Mr. Shaw talking and you smiling kindly while listening and asking polite questions.
You hadn’t been much in the mood for this barbecue, but you didn’t want to disappoint your parents. Your stepfather was an intimidating man, always criticizing you. You tried your best not to irk him, to be polite and kind when around him. All you wanted was to have him praise you, even if it would only be once, and call you a good girl.
You just wanted his approval.
You felt the weight of your stepfather's gaze upon you from across the garden. William Afton, the man your mother had remarried not too long ago, was watching you intently. It seemed as if he was watching you most of the time these days, his scrutinizing eyes following your movements across the lawn.
You were doing your best to be the perfect stepdaughter, to get him to like you. You dressed up nicely and were socializing with his friends. What was it that you were doing wrong that he watched you like a hawk?
Mr. Shaw started telling you about his side job as a magician, catching your interest and distracting you from your stepdad’s watchful gaze. You couldn't help but let your enthusiasm show. His tales of dazzling tricks and spellbound audiences drew you in, and you found yourself leaning closer, eager to learn more.
"Really? And then what happened?" you asked, caught up in the excitement of it all.
But your stepdad had other ideas. In an instant, William was beside you, gripping your arm with a force that made you wince.
"Excuse us, Albert," he said through gritted teeth before dragging you into the house.
You stumbled along, trying to keep up with his angry strides. You didn’t miss how he led you into a room far enough from the party to ensure privacy before slamming the door shut behind you. Confused, you looked up at him.
There was a harshness in his eyes that for a moment seemed to flicker. As if your innocent eyes angered him even more.
"What do you think you're doing?" he spat, his voice harsh and cold.
"Talking to Mr. Shaw?" you answered hesitantly, unsure of where this hostility was coming from.
"Keep your distance from him," William growled, his fingers digging into your arm. "He's old enough to be your father."
Your stepdad’s words puzzled you. Keep your distance? Less than an hour ago he had wanted you to step up to them, had been lecturing you about it.
"But you're friends with him!" you protested, trying to make sense of your stepdad's sudden change in demeanor.
"That's different," he snapped. "Stay away from him, understand?"
"Fine," you muttered, your heart racing with confusion and fear. "I didn't mean to upset you," you murmured, searching his face for answers.
His touch lingered on your arm, and you felt a shiver run down your spine. You slowly became aware that he was deliberately finding excuses to touch you. When you passed each other in the hallway, his arm would accidentally brush past yours. When you needed to get to college in the morning, his hands would linger on the lunch he had prepared for you.
You knew exactly how his fingers felt.
The texture of his skin, the roughness of his palms, the warmth they exuded. You knew it, because he kept brushing his hands past your bare skin – whenever your shirt had no sleeves or whenever it slid down your arm to reveal your shoulder.
"Older men like him, they only think of one thing," William said, feigning concern. "Pretty young girl like you…” you saw him press his lips into a thin line, thinking before he spoke again. “I just want to protect you. Even though I'm not your real dad."
His words made him sound like the concerned father figure, but something in his eyes betrayed him. You saw through his act, recognizing the jealousy simmering beneath the surface.
"Okay, Dad," you whispered, meekly apologizing. "I promise to behave better."
The way you called him 'Dad' seemed to ignite something within him. His grip tightened, and you could swear you saw a hint of arousal in his eyes. With that realization, you made a silent vow to test your theory. Could it be that your stepfather had the hots for you?
"Thank you," he said, releasing you. "Now, go back outside and enjoy the party. But remember, no boys."
You locked eyes with him, searching for an answer to the many questions that swirled inside your head. “No boys,” you promised, thinking that Mr. Shaw was, after all, a man.
Not a boy.
You returned to the garden, feeling his gaze on your back as you went. The sun still shone brightly, casting long shadows on the grass. Laughter from the guests mingled with the sizzle of the barbecue. It all felt so normal, yet you couldn't shake off the tension that now wrapped around you like a second skin.
After weighing your options, you slowly made your way back to the food again. Most of the guests here were male. Men around your stepdad’s age. They were his friends mostly, after all. The women had gathered in a corner, your mom included, talking about topics that didn’t interest you at all.
"Are you okay?" Mr. Shaw asked, noticing your return. His kind eyes searched yours, genuine concern etched on his face.
"Of course," you smiled, pushing the unease aside. "Let's talk more about your magic tricks."
You leaned in closer, engrossed by his stories once more. But this time, you kept one eye on your stepfather, watching as he glowered from the sidelines. There was a small gesture of his hand as he stroked the obvious tent in his pants, rearranging himself discreetly, blue eyes still burning upon you.
You leaned a little closer to Mr. Shaw, eager to see your stepdad’s reaction. His eyes darkened, lips clipped. And then he took a step toward you.
You felt a twisted sense of satisfaction at his reaction – now you knew for sure.
"Wow, that's amazing," you said to Mr. Shaw, your voice louder and more enthusiastic than before. "You must be an incredible magician."
"Thank you," he replied, grinning. "I enjoy sharing my passion with others."
“Perhaps you can share your passion with me one day,” you said, aware that your stepfather must have heard every single word.
Mr. Shaw’s movements stilled, his strong hands holding the tongs in mid-air, veins clearly showing. His eyes seemed to darken. He was an attractive man, you noticed. Perhaps you could -
“I’d love to,” his deep and gravelly voice came.
But your eyes were no longer on Mr. Shaw. You couldn't help but notice William's clenched fists and darkened expression as he hurried toward you. This dangerous game was only just beginning, and you were fully aware of the risks. But somehow, that made it all the more enticing.
The moment was fleeting – the sudden grip of William's hand on your arm as he pulled you away from Mr. Shaw once more.
"Sorry to interrupt," he growled, a forced smile plastered on his face. "But I need to talk to my daughter… again."
"Of course," Mr. Shaw said, eyes narrowing slightly in concern.
William led you into the house again, his fingers digging into your flesh. You were certain bruises would form later. The thought, however, made you feel fuzzy on the inside. As if he was somehow marking you as his, and wasn’t that a thrilling thought?
Once inside, he pushed you against the wall, the action making you gasp. You squeezed your legs together involuntarily, your core hot and slick by nasty thoughts. Your stepfather looked powerful like this, dominating. His chest heaved up and down, gritted teeth showing. His blue eyes blazing with anger.
"Didn't I tell you to stay away from him?" he hissed, his breath hot on your face. "You're being a bad girl, deliberately, aren't you?"
"Wh-what do you mean?" you stammered, trying to maintain your composure. His proximity made it difficult to think straight.
"Your outfit," he spat, his gaze scanning over your tight top and hot pants. "It's too revealing. It's like you're inviting him to look at you."
"Thank you, Daddy," you whispered, your voice trembling as you started to talk. But then you caught sight of how his eyes slightly widened at your words, pupils blown.
You continued, "for being concerned about me."
As you slid past him, your fingers brushed against his arm, lingering for just a moment longer than necessary.
Returning to the garden, you decided to join your mom, settling down beside her on a lawn chair. The sun warmed your skin, but you couldn't ignore the heat radiating from William's stare. He watched you intently, his hands gripping the edge of the table as if he could barely contain himself.
But you obliged to his rules, avoiding eye contact with any of your stepdad’s male friends and sitting with the females of the party instead.
The little silly cat-and-mouse game the two of you had played was pushed to the back of your mind as you listened to the conversations around you. Dull as they were, they took away the ache you had started to feel dance between your legs.
Until your stepdad appeared in your vision, placing a glass of freshly made juice before you.
"Here," he said abruptly. "I thought you might be thirsty."
"Thank you," you murmured, meeting his eyes as you brought the straw to your lips. Slowly, deliberately, you sipped the cold liquid, watching the way his pupils dilated with each movement.
"Is everything all right?" your mom asked, oblivious to the tension between you and William.
"Everything's fine," you replied, eyes still locked with his. The air crackled around you, electric with unspoken desire. It was a dangerous dance, a game of control – and you were both playing with fire. ~ AN: For more, follow me (: ~~ Masterlist - Request Box -  Support me on Ko-Fi ~~

If you had an original villain for Cyborg 009 what would they be like and what would their backstory be?
Oh my goodness, this is a flood gate opening sort of question! To be honest I have a few OC villains I've made fan art of but they are... maybe too long winded to get into. If I ever get around to doing like mini character sheets I will share them though.
Though I do have an idea for a villain that is a character we see very briefly. It's a bit long so I'll spare folks and have it under the cut.
Somewhere in my fic burn pile is a concept for Hilda later returning as a villain, she would have also been taken after the accident with Albert as well as the lion. Due to the severity of her injuries she would be spliced together with the lion, and have an altered form for battle in the same vein as Mary (Merry?). She would have been a final "mock up" before Black Ghost moved on to the "prototype" cyborgs. Something looking more like the prototype series but being maybe more comparable in quality to the cyborg men. Like a proof of concept for cyborg without need for life support tubes.
There would have been some melodramatic elements like a memory loss subplot later revealed to be feature of her cybernetics, not a bug. Because she was made to be a proof of concept she wouldn't have been made durably or for practical application. Instead once the prototypes were approved she was going to be a final "field test" to impress investors to garner funding to continue making cyborgs 005+. Because of this, and Black Ghosts assumptions of an intimate relationship between her and 004 one of them had to have their memories erased so they would fight without reservation. This would also tie in to the internal lab debate of cyborgs being better or worse with their humanity removed, so she would have also be a test for that.
However, because of cybernetic difficulties with 002, 003, and 004 they would never have the chance to meet. Instead being shelved in cryogenics until science and funding caught up and filled the gap between man and machine. Once it had though, Black Ghost already received funding and resources to continue on the series without their little rigged demonstration. So once again Hilda would be kept in cryogenic storage, likely having been forgotten over the decades.
The catalyst to her being rediscovered would have been the prototype cyborgs initial escape off the island lab, as Black Ghost was trying to evacuate goods and machinery. As the series progressed and the other newer models of cyborgs were sent after 009 and friends, we would have eventual been introduced to Hilda.
I would have introduced her in place of Joe's old friends. Albert would have had a moment of rare domesticity and would have spotted a woman in town who looked "identical" to his wife. He would have been shocked and gone somewhere else to collect himself, only to have her "organically" run into him and make small talk. A morbid, if not traumatic curiosity would come over him and he would leave awkwardly. She would tail him thanks to stereotypical catlike sense of smell (corny ik). And it would escalate from there in a similar way to Joe with his old friends. Though the melodrama of Albert having long since come to terms with her loss, only to realize she was in fact alive, to then be confused and upset with survivors guilt (if he would consider his condition as that idk) while having to fight her, and ALSO the sheer rage I think he would have for what Black Ghost had done to her... it started to feel maybe a bit too much lmao.
The biggest issues for never going through with this beyond a long set of bullet plot points were:
We already have Lion Man in the pantheon of Mythos Cyborgs, previously mentioned Mary (though while feline never defined as a lioness I think), and in the 1968 series we also deal with that weird gold lion. It would not surprise me if there were other lions I was forgetting in the series. Lots of lions, perhaps even too many lions. Kimba's influence was great it would seem.
Remember how I said it was a bit too much? When I really sat and thought about an outcome that matched the flow of the plot it felt very depressing. The timing of this in the CS continuity would be the Yomi arc, so what was going to happen there? End game would have been one of Helena's sisters? Would I have to write her out? Or redirect the romance subplot? Would it be a melodramatic venture into a shitty mid 30's love triangle? Would Albert even believably be involved in a love triangle? It felt cheap at best, but overall unfair to everyone.
When I did have a solution to the depressing ending, it wasn't a happy ending either. That felt very forced, at least with what flowed well with the themes the story was going to focus on. It would have been open ended with there being enough room for healthy speculation for the reader to decide on their own how things went. However, that also came at the cost of writing a very long fic and I don't think I am capable of that for at least the foreseeable future... so it was scrapped! Though like my OCs I have doodles of her design concepts somewhere
Thank you for asking! This was a very fun question to answer. In turn I would love to hear about other folks Cyborg Villain ideas if they would like to share!

Polite Patriots
Tumblr media
I've already said that I am a fan of nothing. Mostly because I don't have the time or energy to immerse myself deeply in something. But I think I look for my own expectations in the characters and the story, and when they are not met, I would lose interest.
The same thing happened to the Moriarty the Patriot. I was very excited when I read the plot and I loved the beginning of the story. But the reason that made me interested was seeing the interaction between the brothers and the complex, conflicting and contradictory feelings they had while loving each other. But there was nothing.
There were very few brotherly scenes and I didn't even see Louis and Albert together, the two people I was most curious about their dynamic.
From the moment sweet little Louis burned his face, I said to myself, hear, I found my favorite character. The dedication and courage he had at that young age showed how far he was willing to go for his brothers. I thought he is an unpredictable person who does crazy things without asking permission or approval.
I wanted to see his independence, individuality, willfulness and unique approach. But he was just ... obedient. He gave himself fully to the ideals and plans of his brothers. For him, everything revolved around William and the only thing he did against his will was to ask Sherlock to save his brother.
And Albert… was it really that easy for him to kill his family and servants? The smell of their burnt flesh didn't hunt him at least for a few days? Never looked back and felt no regrets? If he was crushed under the feeling of regret but still believed in his path, it would be more concrete for me. It would have been more interesting if Albert had feelings for the real William and had to kill him for the greater good or whatever.
But the art style was amazing, the plot solid, so I have nothing to complain about.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #222-224 (FINAL ISSUE)
March/May 1988
By Steve Englehart, Joey Cavalieri, Joe Staton, Gil Kane, Mark Farmer, Anthony Tollin, Agustin Mas, Carrie Spiegle, and Albert DeGuzman.
Tumblr media
The Green Lantern Corps have to decide whether they kill Sinestro or not... but their decision will mark the end of an era for the corps.
Tumblr media
SCORE: 8
Did I review issue #222? Maybe... but these last three issues were meant to be read together.
Spoilers for a three decades old story?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not a fan of Gil Kane. I understand why they wanted him to be involved in this story, but perhaps it was a big departure from Staton.
However, in this case, Gil Kane did very well... mainly because of two reasons.
Because it's in space and we don't get to see Gil's outdated human fashion choices.
Mark Farmer did an amazing job modernizing his style.
Tumblr media
So what happened? Why is this the end?
To make the story short, when the GLC decided to kill Sinestro, they broke a hidden rule. If a GL ever killed any male from Korugar, the battery would destroy itself.
Hal had to visit the Guardians (now retired), and there he found out the battery's destruction would create a black hole that would destroy the universe. They commanded him to get into the battery himself to face... well... the yellow impurity that in this case was the soul of Sinestro or something like that (this story takes place way before the creation of the Parallax entity).
As a result, only a handful of Green Lanterns are left after this story.
But the story behind the story was that DC wanted to go back to having one main Green Lantern. Something that would prove to be difficult, as Earth had three of them (plus ex-green lanterns).
At the time the book ended, Green Lantern Corps (originally Green Lantern) had the sixth longest run at DC. It would be replaced a while later by a new volume of Green Lantern.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am not sure what happened with the last issue (Cavalieri replaced Englehart). So he probably didn't approve of the change of direction... or maybe he was already working on New Guardians (at least, I think I remember the same team of Millennium being involved in that).

As the highly anticipated Beatles '64 documentary drops on Disney+, acclaimed director Adam McKay kicked up a storm with a pointed critique of "white liberals" and their enduring fascination with The Beatles. McKay, known for directing Don’t Look Up, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his candid thoughts just hours before the release of David Tedeschi’s Beatles ’64. His posts sparked widespread discussion and debate among fans and critics alike. “Nothing is lamer/funnier than white liberals’ never-ending fascination for The Beatles. It’s so Neo-liberal. ‘They’re the best, right? So let’s never stop micro-focusing on them,’” McKay wrote. He didn't stop there. "Liberals always operate from a 'must get the right answer on the test' list of approved culture. It's so lifeless and flat. Like yeah, 'Happiness is a Warm Gun' and 'Day in the Life' are great tunes, but let's move past age 13," he added, sharing his opinion that infatuation with the group feels staid and overly groupthink. Red Carpet Report on Mingle Media TV from Culver City, USA, CC BY-SA 2.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0, via Wikimedia Commons A Polarizing Perspective Predictably, it led to a flurry of online comments. A user shot back and claimed: "I cannot imagine being sad to live where I let some sort of politics give me a crappy attitude regarding The Beatles of all." McKay countered, saying his comments were not political. "Got nothing to do with politics. It's just that we all get into The Beatles when we're 12 and then we move on. Being over the age of 30 and regularly talking about The Beatles just means you're a bore." He went on, explaining from a personal perspective about his dynamic relationship with music: "And my love of music is a constant source of joy. It changes and grows in ways I can't predict. But good lord, to watch a Beatles doc every year? Shoot me dead now." McKay's comments fall during increased buzz for Beatles '64, a Martin Scorsese-produced documentary that reexamines the meteoric ascension of the band through their first U.S. tour. The film is directed by David Tedeschi and comprises rare, newly restored 4K footage taken by Albert and David Maysles for the original 1964 documentary, What's Happening! The Beatles in the U.S.A. The project gives fans an intimate look at The Beatles during their groundbreaking era in the United States, blending archival footage with behind-the-scenes moments. This nostalgic trip to Beatlemania has been met with excitement, particularly among long-time fans of the Fab Four. McKay's review is also part of a larger conversation about the role of The Beatles in contemporary culture. For decades, the band has been celebrated across generations, with their music often being used as a cultural reference point. However, McKay’s comments suggest a frustration with the fixation on certain icons at the expense of broader musical exploration. While acknowledging The Beatles’ talent and enduring appeal, he calls for more diversity in cultural discourse, urging people to move beyond what he perceives as a repetitive focus on past icons. Many fans find it timeless, while others seem to agree with McKay on the fact that such affection can be stagnant or too restrictive. The argument really brings to question the very nature of how society makes room for the celebration of cultural heritage without allowing any newness in perspective. Beatles '64: More of the Same or Something Different? Whether or not McKay's words ring true, the release of Beatles '64 is sure to reignite widespread appreciation for the band. Scorsese's involvement and the promise of rare, high-quality footage have already generated considerable excitement. While some, like McKay, may question the need for yet another documentary about the Fab Four, others are thrilled to revisit the energy and cultural significance of their 1964 U.S. tour. For fans, the film is not just about nostalgia—it's about reliving the magic of a moment that defined an era. The conversation sparked by McKay illustrates the tension between reverence to the past and the insistence on new cultural narratives. Through Beatles '64, audiences will come with personal perspectives, whether they are veterans of the Beatles or one of those curious about why everyone is making such a big deal. One thing is sure: The Beatles are a lightning rod for discussing music, culture, and the enduring power of art. Whether celebrated or criticized, their legacy continues to provoke reactions, ensuring their place in the cultural conversation for years to come. Read the full article

Palm Springs is famous for its mid-century modern architecture and architect Albert Frey played a large part in creating that legacy. Palm Springs Art Museum’s Architecture and Design Center’s Albert Frey: Inventive Modernist celebrates his career with a creatively curated show filled with an extensive collection of historical photographs.
From the museum-
Albert Frey (American, born Switzerland, 1903-1998) helped to establish Palm Springs as a world-recognized center for modern architecture and design. He was the first architect to design a modern International Style structure for Palm Springs and paved the way for modern architecture and the architects that followed.
Steeped in early European modernism, Frey’s adroit handling of low-cost and low-maintenance industrial materials, sublime desert color combinations, and appealing geometric compositions give him a unique and permanent place in the idiom of “desert modernism” and succinctly expressed his two greatest loves—nature and architecture.
His mark on Palm Springs is indelible and includes such recognized icons as the Palm Springs City Hall, Fire Station #1, The Palm Springs Visitors Center, The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway Valley Station, The Loewy House, and his final home, known as Frey House II, as well as hundreds of other notable projects.
“….the sun, the pure air and the simple forms of the desert create perfect conditions for architecture.”- Albert Frey in a letter to Le Corbusier, 1935 about Palm Springs
More selections from the exhibition below-

In 1937, Frey left California to join the staff of Philip Goodwin who was commissioned to design the new Museum of Modern Art in New York. The museum has included documentation, photos and a model of the building- pictured above.

Above are stills taken from North Shore Yacht Club (1958), a promotional video for the structure that Frey built when the Salton Sea was a thriving resort destination. The refurbished building is now used for community events in Mecca, California.

The Tramway Gas Station, pictured above, is now the location of the Official Palm Springs Visitor Information Center.
From the museum-
At the same location where some 23 years earlier Clark & Frey had designed the graceful stone entry gates to Palm Springs, Frey created another welcoming structure-the Tramway Gas Station, a bold and assertive monument. Architecturally speaking, its roof offers a hyperbolic paraboloid design. Its cantilever suggests a spectacular soaring bird and indicates that visitors were entering a decidedly mid-century modern, forward-thinking city. About its genesis Frey said, “When you think about what nature produces in fantastic forms, in birds and animals-that’s where creativity comes in.”
In 1996 the building was approved by the city for demolition, sparking the beginning of the mid-century preservation movement in Palm Springs. The building was saved by those who bravely stood up for and championed its daring artistry, its physical representation of a moment in time and place, and the legacy of Albert Frey.
This exhibition closes 8/18/24.
If you are a modernism fan, every year Palm Springs celebrates Modernism Week- this year with a four day event in October and next year a week long event in February.

Albert Kao was really funny at the panel. (He’s the localization director of FGO). Haha, he said at the start don’t ask him about Mahoyo because his response will be silence.
Did you know the localization team is only compromised of 5 people?! (Translating I mean), he said it used to be only 3 people. They added a lot more people over the years. That is really impressive honestly. For all they do for NA server, there is just so much content to be translated.
He made a joke about Saber’s name and how the fan base got a lot of questions of why they choose some names/terms but I think a lot of people at the panel didn’t understand the joke. (The cursed name Altria vs. Artoria/Arturia)
And I didn’t pay attention to this when it was announced but did you know Chaldea Breakroom was actually exclusive to NA? It was content not revealed in materials before. NA gets it 2-3 weeks before Japan. He said all the Japanese fans freaked out over missing information, and that when the localization team requested it he wasn’t sure why Type-Moon approved this.
That really made me happy because I remember when Emiya Gohan game was announced, I was worried TM wouldn’t give it to us, but they did. They gave us Chaldea Breakroom too (by the way, the next issue is our beloved Demon King. I’m not sure if that’s allowed to say 👀), and now the announcement for Mahoyo. Just TM acknowledging their fan base slowly is really great.
Haha Kao also said NA doesn’t get any materials, VNs etc and made a joke about how no one knows what Fate is or where to read Requiem since it’s not translated. They showcased what we already know of the events coming for May and how it’s a board game based event (it’s Fate Requiem if any of you have not heard.) if you clear the event you get to keep Erice at your party. Minimum requirement is Singularity F.
Also the Final Gudaguda event is having a rerun so you can get Kagetora if you missed last time when you clear the event! I believe minimum requirement is Singularity F too.
He kept making a joke about how everyone has Clairvoyance EX since most of us knew what events were happening. It was a really fun event. Even if I knew the events beforehand, it was nice to hear some inside information and how hard the localization team has strived for us. Also thanks to them because we get 10 free SQ for the Sakuracon event.
He also said that there has been a lot of questions over the past years of why they don’t just catch up to JP. He said that we actually are faster and busier than JP due to all the content we have from them but the localization team can’t rush the events because it would cause chaos such as multiple 5 star banners all at once, story requirements, events overlapping etc. which makes a lot of sense.
Also for the people not caught up to Lb5, there was a picture of Kirschtaria Wodime and Kao said that if you want answers to who this hot guy is, catch up 😂.
Someone was cosplaying Oberon and Kao said that there’s a walking spoiler in the room in the back. He said even though he gave a spoiler warning, the whole room turned to see what he was talking about 😂 (and we all really did).

Chapter 11: An unforgettable night
They took the elevator and shortly Jaime and Claire were standing outside the door to Claire's apartment. Jamie was about to say goodbye when Claire said:
"You weren't even here after I moved in."
It wasn't an accusation, just a very matter-of-fact statement, but it struck Jamie. It was true. Claire had moved in and then suddenly so many things happened. The appointment at the clinic, Fergus' school enrollment, that annoying annual party at the New Opera House, the long business trip. And in between there was always a lot of work, trips with Fergus and ... other things.

"Yes," he admitted thoughtfully, "that's true."
"Would you like to stay a moment?"
Claire had unlocked the door and was gesturing through it.
Jamie got the feeling that she was less concerned with showing him the apartment than with the fact that she was reluctant to be alone right now. He nodded and stepped inside.
Claire followed him, turned on the light and said:
"Feel free to look around, I'm going to the bathroom for a minute to change this tight dress for something more comfortable."
Jamie looked around and noted with approval how homely Claire had made the small apartment. He stepped to the desk that stood under the large window and read with interest the titles of the books that lay there in a small pile: "The Pedagogy of Johann Amos Comenius," " Wilhelm von Humboldt and his Theory of Education," "Albert Bandura's Social Learning Theory," Alfred K. Treml: “General Pedagogy. Foundations, Fields of Action, and Perspectives on Education."
Claire returned from the bathroom, now wearing black jeans and a white T-shirt. She had removed her makeup and looked very tired.
"Well, did you find anything interesting to read?"
Her question was followed by a lengthy yawn.
Jamie looked at her in amazement.
           "Those books ..."
           "Yeah?"
"Have you always had them, or did you get them specially because of Fergus ..."
"I discovered a very nice little bookstore in Potsdam with a café attached to it, and that's where I ordered them. I liked to refresh old knowledge and learn new things. After all, Fergus should enjoy the best education we can give him, right?"
           Jamie nodded thoughtfully.
"Why don't you sit down," Claire said, pointing in the direction where the sofas were.
           Jamie followed her request.
           "Would you like a water?"
"Oh, yes, thank you. After all that alcohol ..."
           Claire disappeared toward the kitchen.
"Are you comfortable here? Do you like the panoramic window, or ..." he called after her.
"Absolutely. The window is wonderful. Especially when you can look out over the lake in the evening and see all the lights. But I'm glad you can put the sunroof down when the sun is fully on it. Otherwise it would heat up too much."

Claire returned with a tray on which were two glasses and a bottle of mineral water.
"Should I put in an air conditioner ..."
           "Heavens no!"
Claire had filled the glasses with mineral water and handed one to him.
           "But ..."
"No, Jamie. Air conditioning is extremely bad for the environment. You can control that with ventilation, too. And since the house, including my apartment has quite a few windows and sun blinds, that's quite enough."
           "O.k., I just wanted to ..."
"I know. You want us all to have it as good as possible here. But we can do better with less CO2 in the long run."
She smiled and toasted his water glass in jest.
           "Cheers!"
           Jamie had to smile.
           "Cheers!"
They were silent for a moment then Jamie asked:
"Did you draw any conclusions from your reading in terms of .... I mean, do I need to change anything .... should we ..."
Claire placed her water glass next to Jamie's. Then she went to the desk and opened a drawer, from which she took a clip folder with a number of sheets. She sat down next to Jamie and opened the folder:
"I haven't gotten far yet, but I've made a list of ... there it is  ... important points .... How we can help Fergus develop."
She handed the open folder to Jamie and a conversation ensued about Fergus, his abilities, and educational support options.
Jamie was excited and went through the folder with Claire's notes, commenting on this and that point, weaving in experiences from his own childhood.

His enthusiastic monologue ended only when Claire, already fast asleep, sank her upper body onto his lap and began to snore audible. Jamie almost cursed out loud, he was so startled. But Claire didn't seem to notice anything. She stretched and continued snoring. Her breath, smelling strongly of alcohol, filled the air. Jamie froze and wondered what he could do. He didn't want to wake Claire after all he had put her through that evening. But neither she nor he could remain in that posture through the night. Could he leave her alone in her drunken state? Claire had never talked about ever sleepwalking, but Jamie knew that alcohol could alter deep sleep and thus increase the possibility of sleep walking. When he had read several books because of Fergus' sleepwalking, he had also read that alcohol could increase the urge to have a 'night tour'. He sat around perplexed for a moment, then decided it was better to stay with Claire. The fact that the sleeping woman was muttering some unintelligible words reinforced his decision. Besides, Fergus was in safekeeping with Mr. and Mrs. Curtius, so he wasn't needed there that night.
Slowly, Jamie pushed the coffee table aside with his right leg. While holding Claire with his right arm, he grabbed the back of the other sofa with his left hand and pulled it toward him. The action turned out to be laborious, but after ten minutes of careful work, he managed to pull the second sofa into place so that it was parallel to the one on which he and Claire were sitting. When he had pulled it close enough, he carefully rolled Claire onto the second sofa. To his relief, she didn't wake up. She mumbled some more unintelligible words, then began to snore loudly.
Jamie reached out and took the blanket that was on the back of that sofa he was sitting on and carefully covered her. Then he stretched out on the vacated seat but had to realize that the sofa was not long enough for his length. He would have to sleep with his knees bent ... His stiff legs would remind him of that. So it would be a proverbial unforgettable night. He had to smile. This was not how he had imagined a first night with Claire. As if she had heard his thoughts, Claire spun around on her sofa, took a deep breath, and then said loudly and clearly, "Yeeeepppp!" Jamie had to muster all his strength not to laugh out loud. This woman was such a special blend of beauty, strength, joy, determination, and at the same time she was fragile and of a depth he had rarely encountered. Would there be a future for him with her beyond the contractually agreed time? For a long time he was still preoccupied with this question, but at some point he too fell asleep and only woke up again when a shrill wail of sirens woke him up.
Jamie sprang up from the sofa and suddenly found himself sitting opposite the sleepy Claire.
           "What ..."
"Tthat's mmmy aaaa alarm clockkkk," she replied.
Jamie got up and followed the sound until he found the source of it on Claire's nightstand. He pushed all the buttons on the device until the noise finally died away. Then he turned back to Claire.

"Wwhat are you do do doing here?" she asked, rubbing her eyes. Then she looked around at the odd placement of their couches.
"You fell asleep last night during our conversation and ... since I didn't want to wake you .... You were also talking in your sleep ... I didn't want to wake you .... and thought it better ..."
"Oh, thank you," she said, stretching and yawning profusely.
           Jamie had to smile.
           "Ha ... Did I snore very ....?"
           Once again, Claire yawned profusely.
"I survived it. The guys in the armed forces saw more wood in one night than you do."
He got up, went to the kitchen and filled a glass with mineral water.
"The Alka Selzers are in the last drawer, far right," she called after him.
He found the packet of tablets and dropped one into the glass, which he handed to Claire a moment later. She waited for the tablet to dissolve and then drank in large gulps.
           "Thank you."
           "You're welcome."
Jamie waited until she had drunk the entire glass, then asked:
"Do you feel able to ..."
           Claire nodded.
"Yeah, I'm going to take a shower and then come down for breakfast ... what time is it?"
           "Are you sure?"
She heard the honest concern in his voice.
           "Yes."
           "It's 7:30."
"I'll be with you at 8:15. But make me a strong coffee, please."
           "Of course."
Claire got up and disappeared into the bathroom. When she returned to the living room twenty minutes later, the sofas and coffee table were back exactly as they had always been. The pillows had been fluffed and neatly placed. The wool blankets lay, neatly folded, on the backs of the sofas. Claire shook her head slightly.
"James Fraser," she thought then, "what am I going to do with you?"
When she then appeared for breakfast, she was already awaited by Jamie and Fergus. As Jamie stood up and pulled her chair away from the table, Fergus approached her and whispered:
           "Good morning, Claire."
She looked at him in surprise:
"Good morning, Fergus. But why are you whispering?"
"Dad said you have a headache and that it hurts when we're loud."
           Claire pulled the boy close.
"That's right. Thank you for being considerate."
She sat down and Jamie pushed her chair to the table.
           "Thanks."
"You're welcome. I'll go get your espresso."
Shortly, Jamie returned with a tray containing a cup of the requested espresso, a large glass of sparkling water, and a plate of fragrant country breakfast. Jamie placed both in front of Claire.
"This is the best thing to have with a Kater (= german for a masculine cat, also synonyme for ‘hangover’) like yours."
Tumblr media
“Breakfast” by congerdesign
"Kater?" asked Fergus, "Where does Claire have a cat? Can I see him?"
Claire and Jamie had to smile.
"No, Fergus, Claire doesn't have a cat. But the headache she has is also called a 'Kater'."
"But what do headaches have to do with a cat?"
"In the old days, if you had the kind of headache Claire has now, you'd say, 'I have catarrh.' ' Catarrh is an inflammation of the mucous membranes. And because the complaints that come with this particular headache are similar to those of catarrh, people used to say, 'I have catarrh.' Over the centuries, the word catarrh then became the word ‘Kater’ in German. That's what happens sometimes when a language evolves."
           "I see. Hmm. Too bad."
"Come on," Jamie urged the boy, "eat your breakfast and then we'll do something." At that, he nodded his head briefly in Claire's direction. Fergus understood and returned his attention to his toast.
For almost the rest of the time they ate breakfast in silence, interrupted only by a request for new toast from Fergus or a request from Claire for more espresso.
After eating, Jamie and Fergus cleared the table while Claire took a seat on one of the sofas in the living room and drank another espresso. Shortly after, Jamie and Fergus joined her to say goodbye. Jamie had promised Fergus that he would take him on a little trip to the Dutch Quarter that morning.
"We'll be back for lunch. You're welcome to stay here if you like."
           Claire nodded.
"Have a good time," she said then, and had to put her hand in front of her face because a big yawn escaped her mouth.
Jamie smiled, then was gone. A moment later, Claire heard the front door slam into the lock. She lowered her upper body onto the sofa and stretched out her feet. Then she straightened up once more, grabbed a blanket and pulled it over her body lying on the sofa. It took only moments, then - despite the espresso she had enjoyed - she was asleep again.
She didn't wake up again until she heard sounds coming from the dining room that suggested Mrs. Curtius was setting the table for lunch. Claire stood, too, and stretched. Then she folded the blanket, set it aside, and slipped on her shoes. As she stepped through the door into the dining room, she was greeted by Mrs. Curtius.

"Good day, Claire. Do you know when Mr. Fraser will be returning?"
Claire's eyes fell on the clock that stood on the wall facing the fireplace. It read 12:30. Before she could answer, she heard, the elevator and not a minute later, the voice of James Fraser:
"Fergus Fraser! First, take off your shoes and coat!"
"Yessss," came the child's annoyed reply.
The women looked at each other and grinned, trying to suppress a loud laugh.
It wasn't long before the dining room door opened and Fergus rushed into the room:
"Claire!" the boy exclaimed full of joy, but then he abruptly slowed down and asked in a whisper:
           "Are you feeling better?"
Claire pulled Fergus to her and gave him a hug.
"Not quite yet, but much better!"
"Oh, I'm glad. I have sooo much to tell you!"
"Have you had a lot of experiences?" she asked, shifting her gaze from Fergus, who was pressed against her, now to Jamie.
"Yes, we have ..." began Fergus, but he was interrupted.
"Fergus Fraser, we're going to go wash our hands first, and then we'll have lunch. We don't want to keep Claire and Mrs. Curtius waiting unnecessarily."
Fergus looked at his father first, then looked at Claire and rolled his eyes. Jamie gestured toward the entrance hall with a wave of his hand, and Fergus trotted out with him unwillingly. Jamie followed him.
When "the men" returned from the bathroom, Claire pulled the boy to her once more:
"You can tell me everything in peace after dinner."
           "Are you staying?"
Surprise and delight spread across Fergus' face.
"Sure I will! I'm dying to hear what you've seen. But now we'll eat first, and then we'll help Mrs. Curtius so that she can enjoy the Sunday, too. Afterwards we'll sit down in the living room and you'll tell me everything in detail. Is that o.k.?"
Fergus nodded enthusiastically. Claire saw Jamie roll his eyes now. She knew what he was thinking. It was her day off and again she was spending her free time with them, devoting herself to Fergus and his well-being instead of thinking about herself. She could talk to him about it later.
Lunch went relatively quietly and, after Claire (with the help of "the men") cleared the table, she fulfilled her promise to Fergus. For almost a full hour they sat together on the sofa and Fergus told her en détail what he had experienced. Jamie had sat down in one of the armchairs by the fireplace to read the Sunday paper. From time to time his face peeked out from behind the large pages and looked over at Claire and Fergus. A warm shiver ran through him at the thought of how well Fergus and Claire were getting along. When Fergus finished his report, he slid off the sofa and ran to his father:

"Are we going to play with the train set?"
Jamie, who had already been expecting something like this, put the paper aside and followed Fergus into the conservatory. Claire watched them go, picked up a blanket and lay down on the sofa. It took only a few minutes, then she was already asleep again. "The men" didn't wake Claire until dinner time, surprising her with the fact that they had already set the table.
An hour later, Jamie and Claire put Fergus to bed. The exercise in the fresh air took its toll and before Jamie had finished reading the first page of a story, the boy was asleep.

"Leonardo Versus Tempestra”
Tumblr media
Season 4, Episode 33 First US Airdate: November 10, 1990
Leonardo becomes addicted to an arcade game, but faces a new challenge when its final boss comes to life.
The fourth season of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles continues with "Leonardo Versus Tempestra”. This is Misty Taggart’s fourth credited episode, following on from “Turtles of the Jungle”, “Four Turtles and a Baby” and “Name That Toon”.
Tumblr media
Things kick off today with Donatello, Michaelangelo and Raphael squabbling among themselves after finding the Lair’s kitchen empty. Deciding they’ve been cooped up underground for too long, the trio decide to head to the surface, having heard that the Video Madness arcade has received a new shipment of games.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The group head off to find Leonardo, who has been training with Splinter and battling a crude dummy representation of Shredder. Thinking it’s the real Shreds, Mikey Donny and Raph all pile-on the facsimile and are confused when it turns out to not really be their old foe.
Tumblr media
The Turtles sneak into the arcade through a grate, bringing a stack of pizzas with them to consume while they’re there. Leonardo mentions that the owner of Video Madness agreed to let the team play there out of hours – presumably this unseen proprietor, like all of us, is just a big fan of the Turtles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Panning shots follow of the many arcade cabinets available for our heroes to play, including one that’s literally just Tetris – it actually says “TETRIS” on the title screen. Each of the team finds their own title of choice, with Mikey heading for “Slime Surfer”, Raph opting for “Turbo Tentacles”, and Donnie eager to play a game featuring Albert Einstein called “Brain Buster”.
Tumblr media
Leonardo is summoned by the taunts from a cabinet called “Tempestra’s Revenge”. On-screen, the head of a blue-skinned woman with glowing red eyes challenges players to defeat her. Having beaten every game in Video Madness twice over, Leo is keen to defeat this one too and says as much, before pausing to realise he’s talking to an arcade machine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see Tempestra in her extravagant attire as she continues talking in what must be a pretty damn advanced attract mode for a game from 1990, urging players to “pit [their] skills against the dark mistress of universal power”. This angers Leonardo enough that he’s ready to start playing. (I should point out that at no point do we ever see anyone put coins in these machines – either the owner just charges a flat fee for entry and all the machines are set to free play, or he’s set them up that way just for the Turtles.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hours pass and the Turtles are sprawled out on the floor having dozed off after a night of gameplay, pizza boxes and leftovers everywhere. Realising it’s almost dawn, Mikey, Donnie and Raph pick themselves up and prepare to leave, but find Leonardo still playing Tempestra’s Revenge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At this point we actually get to see what Tempestra’s Revenge looks like: it turns out it’s a “Ghosts ‘n Goblins” type game, right down to having a little knight sprite for the main character. (In probably the funniest line of the episode, Donatello helpfully tells Leo to “Look out, she’s getting her revenge!”) Various pitfalls appear, such as an ice storm, fireballs and a crevice that the knight has to jump over. After finally getting hit, Leonardo finds himself face to face with the “Game Over” screen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Turtles are alerted to the impending arrival of the night watchman. Wait, why did the owner approve of the team playing overnight but not tell security? Anyway, the team are keen to make a quick exit except for Leonardo, who has to be dragged away, screaming at the top of his voice and vowing to face Tempestra again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When the night watchman arrives, he spots the pizza boxes and soda cans scattered around and realises someone has been present. Donatello turns out the power, and in the space of a few seconds, the team use their ninja skills to clear the area – when the lights come back on, the establishment is spotless.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Turtles walk through the sewers on their way back to the Lair, Leonardo continuing to lament his loss to the game. Later, he’s seen drawing Tempestra fanart, too occupied to even eat pizza with his favourite topping (which Mikey helpfully reveals is shredded coconut and sweet pickle). Donatello points out that Leo has been missing ninja practice for the last few nights. After being confronted, Leonardo angrily tears up his art, declaring that video games are “for kids” and storming off. Donnie speculates to Mikey and Raph that Leo has likely been sneaking back to Video Madness for solo gaming sessions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While the other Turtles are soundly asleep, Leonardo has a nightmare where he’s taunted by a vision of Tempestra laughing at him. After falling out of bed, he quietly heads off to the arcade. As he makes it to the thirteenth level of the game, a lightning bolt is seen hitting a nearby power line, which overloads the cabinet and causes its monitor to explode.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Leonardo comes around, he finds the actual Tempestra hovering over him, now a real being somehow. She thanks him for bringing her to life, adding that “no-one has ever reached the final level of the game before”. After announcing that the stakes have risen and now the fate of the world is on the line, she zaps Leo with an energy bolt, pressing him against the wall and preventing him from using his Turtlecom to alert the others.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Act two opens with Leonardo dropping to the ground and finally being able to reach the other Turtles, none of whom are very happy to have their sleep interrupted by his panicked ramblings about Tempestra. They quickly change their opinions after seeing the game character warn them to stay out her conflict with Leonardo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tempestra destroys Leo’s Turtlecom before sending a huge charge of energy underground that generates tidal waves through the sewers. With the tunnel flooded, Mikey, Donnie and Raph have no means of reaching the surface and are trapped in the Lair. The villainess goes on to express her anger at having spent her life living inside a video game, revealing to Leo that “the electrical surge, combined with [his] computer input, created a hyperfield vacuum, pulling [her] through this dimension!” She flies through the doors of the arcade, and out into the skies of New York. Leo makes a point of pulling the circuit board from the Tempestra’s Revenge cabinet, figuring that it might make all the difference in defeating her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Underground, Donatello assembles a makeshift diving bell that will allow the team to navigate the high-pressure waters that have flooded the tunnel. To do so, he uses all the metal they can find in items scattered around the Lair, including – to Michaelangelo’s dismay – their pizza pans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leonardo encounters Tempestra again on the city streets. She freezes him in water from a nearby fire hydrant, and when this fails to stop him, mobilises a steamroller that he’s able to take control of. The game boss creates massive earthquakes that begin tearing apart the ground in what I assume is supposed to be Times Square. Fortunately, the one other person who just happens to be in the area is April in her news van, and she’s able to rescue her friend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tempestra hovers above the Channel 6 building and vows to begin her reign of terror. Inside, we see Vernon about to film a weather forecast, with Stan silently nodding behind the camera to give him the all-clear and Irma apparently now acting as stage manager. Vernon struggles to remember what time of day it is or even what station he works for, and is further confused as the temperature rises and falls wildly while he’s on-air.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Irma hears Tempestra’s laugher echo through the building, and in a little nod to the fact that this station is seemingly run by no more than four or five people at any given time, concedes that “Vernon’s not so good, but he’s all we’ve got!” After being summoned by the bellowing of Burne, she walks through a nearby office area where a group of staffers shiver in winter clothing. In her boss’s office, Irma is stunned to see the station’s kingpin with a fan on and his feet in a bucket of ice as he tries to deal with the heat, which he reveals has reached one hundred and twelve degrees. Burne orders Irma to do something about it – and get “that idiot Vernon” off the air.
Tumblr media
Breaking the fourth wall, Irma informs the viewers that she believed them when she was told this was supposed to be a promotion, officially confirming she’s off the front desk. (I guess this explains why we haven’t seen her doing any kind of reception or secretarial work all season, as well as why she was filming on-location alongside April and Stan in “Poor Little Rich Turtle”.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A weird scene follows where Leonardo uses April’s Turtlecom to check in with Donatello in the Lair. Donnie has a big grin on his face as he confirms he’s working on a plan to free the team. “What a coincidence!”, responds Leonardo with a similarly large smile, “So am I!” I have no idea what they were going for tonally with this scene. The conversation is interrupted by interference that causes the Turtlecom to cut out. Leonardo figures that this is likely caused by the new nuclear power generator that’s been constructed. He adds that power is likely what Tempestra is after, as she’ll need to recharge before too long.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tempestra arrives outside the power plant and changes the signage to guide Leonardo away from it. When the news van arrives, April follows the signs which actually lead to a bridge that’s still under construction. To make things more challenging, Tempestra generates fog that the duo will need to navigate. Unable to see where she’s going, April ends up driving the news van off the unfinished bridge as act two concludes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The final act opens with the van falling onto “Gigantus... the world’s biggest rollercoaster”. The vehicle slides down the tracks and even circles halfway around a loop before continuing its descent, finally bouncing to a halt on top of a set of stationary roller coaster cars. Meanwhile Tempestra is beginning to weaken, and heads to the power plant in search of juice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mikey, Donnie and Raph all cram into the diving bell and watch as the water begins to fill up outside. The bell bounces through the tunnel, beginning its journey, with Raphael tracking April’s Turtlecom signal to determine the correct path. Meanwhile, April and Leonardo arrive at the nuclear power plant to see Tempestra beginning to siphon its energy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leonardo goads Tempestra into a further battle. She goes on to generate a group of new enemies for him to defeat: an ice monster, a dragon repurposed from season two’s “Curse of the Evil Eye” and from the same episode, an energy monster that I affectionately refer to as “The Big Kremzeek”. April films Leo battling the creatures, hoping that he can be done with them all in time to air the footage on the 11 O'clock News.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a surge of water, the diving bell emerges through what I can only assume is supposed to be an exceptionally large manhole, and the other three Turtles quickly re-join Leonardo. Michaelangelo uses the surge of water from the flood to defeat the dragon, causing it to vanish like an enemy from a video game. Donatello beats the ice monster using his bo, before Raph hurls a trash can into the body of the electrical monster, leading it to overload.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now desperately seeking energy, Tempestra approaches a nearby generator, ready to create a nuclear explosion that will allow her to recharge. Leonardo steps in, hurling the circuit board from the arcade game at Tempestra as she fires off bolts of energy. Donatello helpfully explains that Leonardo has unwittingly turned the board into an electromagnetic energy field, which seemingly pulls the villainess back inside it? (At least I think that’s what they’re going for, we can hear her final cries of defeat but never see her get sucked in.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later, the Turtles pass by Video Madness. Raphael asks Leonardo if he’s up for a game or two but he declines, suggesting he’d rather have a pizza and see a movie. He begins crossing the street and narrowly avoids being hit by a pick-up truck that’s hauling away the damaged Tempestra’s Revenge cabinet: even when the game is over, Tempestra is somehow still out to get him.
“Leonardo Versus Tempestra” is one of the standout episodes of the season and easily Misty Taggart’s best episode so far. The theme of Leonardo succumbing to video game addiction is one that I’m sure was relatable to much of the show’s pre-teen audience at the time, and it’s handled here in a way that feels true to the spirit of the series, without becoming a heavy-handed “very special episode”. (Compare this to the nearest contemporary equivalent I can think of, the episode of “Doug” where he wins what’s effectively a Super Nintendo with a copy of StarFox and somehow manages to ruin his life over the course of a few days, and you can see how this kind of story can easily descend into something resembling a finger-wagging Public Service Announcement.)
Cam Clarke gives a great comedic performance here as our spotlighted Turtle, in easily his best performance since “Leonardo Lightens Up”. While that story explored how Leo’s uptight nature was actually an asset to the team, this one emphasises how his competitive, combative traits and need to win can become unhealthy. This is coupled with a compelling new villain who for once, isn’t a mad scientist – thank goodness! While Tempestra’s origin is definitely a stretch, as a character she’s surely one of the most compelling villains introduced this season, and possibly the only one besides Slash that I imagine anyone was keen to see return. It’ll take a while, but she will show up again in season seven.
NEXT TIME: Splinter Vanishes!
