I have to believe that Thomas hired Albert the Hallboy because he’s gay

I love how we saw Albert being very excited about Myrna Dalgleish and instead of interpreting it in the boring heterosexual way we all just went "oh so Albert is a diva worshipper, good to know"

@royaldresser
After the latest scolding from his father for the way he dressed, Albert had made his way to speak with someone who could surely offer some advice on what his father preferred to wear. Warning of his coming only came in the form of a scurrying hallboy who rushed passed the door without his uniform to hide in a side room.
Seconds later and the Prince appeared, checking that there was indeed someone in the room. “Mister -Ellis?“ A calm call to make sure he had the right man, “One -hopes this will not -come across as uncouth, but I -find myself in need of -some advice.”

For @mauricescudder: my thoughts on the Downton movie (VERY SPOILER-Y)
LOVED:
Historically accurate gay pickup!
Thomas entering a gay club for the first time!
Thomas dancing with a man!
Thomas talking to gay working class men!
Thomas being kissed by a man who reciprocates his feelings!
Tom and Lucy’s romance
Edith in her underwear (she’s hot ok, leave me alone)
Thomas’s “fuck you” to the Crawleys!
Princess Mary being an angel :’)
Maude and Lucy’s plot... quite juicy and compelling
Chris Webster and Richard Ellis being handsome and gay and treating Thomas right :))
That random hot plumber
Mrs Hughes being a badass!
Anna being a badass!
That random hallboy called Albert
Mention of Sybil
Henry Talbot!!!
Lord Merton!!
Communist Denker mention!
All of Edith’s outfits
That seamstress who kept stealing stuff! Go off!!
HATED:
Police raid of the gay club
The rest of the gay men just being... left in prison?? And we’re supposed to forget? Chris will probably end up doing hard labour???
Julian Fellowes seeing how many homophobic slurs he can cram in for the shits and giggles
Chetwode storyline- villainising all Irish Republicans
Mary’s haircut *pukes*
Daisy being annoying af (as always) and her romance with Andy just going round in circles
“God is a royalist” *pukes*
Bringing Carson back?? Why??? His Parkinson’s magically being cured????
Lady Mary in general *pukes again*
Granny Grantham’s death sentence????
No POC
No Mr Mason, Lady Shackleton, Denker or Sprat :(
Still no lesbians >:(
Which loosely translates to: 4.5 stars, 6 stabs in Julian Fellowes’ jugular :))

Speculation Sunday
Some more musings and a round up of info from the past few weeks of filming on the second movie.
Tumblr media
Cookie Monster is waiting for more crumbs...
Another block of filming happened over at Highclere!
There was filming in Bampton, and it’s good to see the town feature as the Downton village again! Jim and Phyllis were spotted in costume. The pics we got all seemed to be of the one scene, but they also probably at least filmed b-roll. Without more clues, I can’t make a guess as to what’s going on, other than they are on the path that goes between the church and the cemetery, vs. the main road.
Costume designer Anna Mary Scott Robbins posted some pics of an “amazing” dress she was patterning for Mary. Wonder for which event that might be happening!
Charlie Watson who plays hallboy Albert has already wrapped, as has new to-Downton Laura Haddock. I’m wondering if this means that they have already filmed all the big events, or if we are already nearly at the end of filming O__O
If the latter, boy, we really didn’t get many crumbs this go around...
I do think Laura Haddock is upstairs based on the eyeliner in the photo that looks like it could be BTS, but as my current manta goes, “who knows.”
~
I had wanted to touch upon another topic a few weeks ago, which was, “do I think that this is going to be the end of Downton Abbey (again)?” and originally I was going to say, “for now” but really, who knows.
Season 6 and its Christmas special were hailed as the end, as they announced it, as they filmed it, as ITV promoted it, as PBS promoted it. There’s been backtracking statements from producers about making a movie earlier on, and I have other theories regarding that (long story short, I think it’s possible that they toyed around with the idea of making a film or film length episode for TV in lieu of the 9 episode S6, but of course they made S6 instead.)
Even the first film was heralded by some credible sources as a “conclusion”, “final hurrah”,  and “one last time”. Clearly not the case, and since it was successful, why not make more of what makes you money (plus imho, the ending of DA 2019 was not a fitting end of the franchise, not when S6CS had loads more poignancy, but I digress). However, there was also the choruses of “never say never,” so DA 2019 was not necessarily written with the intention of being “the end.”
So... I have a feeling that this sequel won’t be marketed in any way to assume that there won’t be any more DA after this. I do think that there is a chance that this might be the end for Violet though (welp), but I also I’m unsure they would want to make it public (or least widely public) before the film is out that that this is the last part of DA with Maggie in it.
I also do think it’s a miracle that they’ve managed twice now to get the cast back. ngl I think they lucked out thanks to the pandemic, and that they are less busy at the moment and not all working on new projects that would have made scheduling hell.
Which leads me to this; further DA projects probably won’t see the full cast back, simply for scheduling reasons. Not unless they all barely do anything else in the years to come, whoops. And we know that getting the cast back was a major thing for these films to even be considered. Again though, who knows. Back in 2015, I don’t think most of the original cast would have moved heaven and earth to reunite for multiple films, but times have changed and well, they’ve probably changed with them.
For some reason, my brain still keeps thinking DA 2021 will contain more of a sense of an ending somehow, though. So it might very well be “the end”, or at least be the ending for a good while, until 30 years from now there is a reboot/revival/whatever, where it’s WWII, and the timeline is retconned and makes no sense, and doesn’t jive with the existing canon-- whoops, now I’m talking about Upstairs Downstairs, lol.
(I do think Fellowes will draw the line at getting DA into WWII as he has always said... for now...)

I say they're terrible about promoting from within but that was quite normal really. Thomas and Anna are exceptions in being promoted so many times within the same house (although I don't remember if Anna worked at DA before being head housemaid, actually, although I could have sworn that was the case)
Which is why I think it's nice that Albert is brought forward in the movie - he's in the house in S5 and he's still a hallboy in the film but he's entrusted with Greater Things - and who is in charge now that he Is? Thomas as under butler would have worked closely with them from S4-S6 and he knows them better than Carson would have known them by the time he's butler - Carson spends more time with the footmen, who are always brought in from outside
Idk. Thoughts. Thomas is a good boss

I know I’m biased but it honestly did read that way to me… and yet at the same time despite what I said before it did read very much the same as Daisy’s interest so I don’t know quite how to interpret that. 😂
I love how we saw Albert being very excited about Myrna Dalgleish and instead of interpreting it in the boring heterosexual way we all just went "oh so Albert is a diva worshipper, good to know"
