Sam ~ Jack of Spades: A young person with dark hair, who may mean well but is emotionally immature or erratic.

Charlie ~ King of Diamonds: An accomplished older man who holds a position of authority, stubborn but also reliable. 

Candace ~ Queen of Clubs:  Giving, generous, nurturing, loyal, and protective to the people she loves.

Alan ~ King of Hearts: Represents a man who is good-natured, loving, and gives good advice. Possibly a paternal life figure.

The lovely and talented Maude Zbornak commissioned me to illustrate a bit of her Adjacents Sam Fortner/Flip Zimmerman fic Knowing You, with Sam and Alan talking! I highly rec reading it - I enjoyed the entire thing, start to finish!

Nothing seems to work: Sam has tried everything he can think of to lift doctor Strauss’ spirits. All Alan does is staring absent mindedly at the clock to see the hours pass by. This is no good 🤎

if i were alan strauss, i simply would have played sam 'father' by the front bottoms, it might not have helped him, but i don't think it would have made him worse so

Was reading Lévi-Stauss's chapter on the construction of mythology in Structural Anthropology for my work, and this quote just made me think of Alan's writing in the dark place...

"Thus, myth grows spiral-wise until the intellectual impulse which has produced it is exhausted. Its growth is a continuous process, whereas its structure remains discontinuous" (1963, 229)
