Shang tsung is continuingly proving that his character is the only interesting character in mk rn. And it sucks. I say this as an absolute shang tsung tsimp and president supreme of the shang tsung defense squad and leader of the shang tsimps.

Like i love mk12/mk1 shang tsung ONLY IN AESTHETIC. and his Voice actor,alan lee is amazing but like i still stand on. He's held back. If the storymode wasn't shitty. He would be perfect for a young and scholarly shang tsung.

MK1 critique: Titan Shang Tsung

When it comes to the MK storymode I feel like I'm the only one who personally doesn't have a problem with it. Such as, how it played out and ended.

I only have one complaint, and that is Titan Shang Tsung. It's not the fact that he's in the story because I love Shang Tsung, but it actually has to do with his physical appearance. I'm not talking about his face model. Our Shang (Liu Kang's timeline) is clearly quite young, like mid 20s, and we pick up on his immaturity quickly. Titan Shang Tsung in the last game looked like he was in his early 40s, probably because that's around the age Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa was when he played Shang Tsung in the 90s.

Tagawa was so great in his role that he reprised it for the game, and MK1 even imitated his vibes. Alan Lee does a great job as young Shang, when I first watched the intros and storymode I did a double take, but could tell there was something different.

What I'm getting at is, Titan Shang Tsung should've appeared a little different. At first I thought Titan Shang should have a pointier nose and maybe longer hair or something, but that would've taken away the point that Our Shang immediately saw himself. So instead, I think Titan Shang should've appeared older, maybe taller. Old enough to pass as Our Shang's father, but look similar enough that we can tell it's Titan Shang.

Alan Lee is great at Shang Tsung, but I think they could've at least done some kind of voice modulating thing that makes him sound more refined and mature, since Tagawa and Alan have a different pitch to their voices. I understand that each game has a different take on the characters when it comes to vibes and characterisation, but they felt too similar. Titan Shang felt like more of an evil twin brother rather than an older and much powerful version of self.

Our Shang feels like he was made for Gen Z, like come on he's a scam artist that's funny as hell, and bro is trying to do NFTs, he's so memeable. I'm pretty sure we all bumped into him in high school/secondary school at some point. MK11 Shang feels like that one person you're not sure whether or not you should trust, like a scary business man. That is the point of his aura, but you get what I mean. Our Shang seems like he is easy to irritate, MK11 Shang is so reserved and collected, when he does show irritation he appears like a King about to execute someone who just committed treason. When Our Shang kills someone it's like watching Amber as Ghostface, when she wasn't being loud and acting like the joker.

All I'm saying is, there should've been a completely different air Titan Shang carried, like Titan Kitana and our Kitana.

Edit: Why does Titan Shang have claws too? He wouldn't use them, he's already got his golden acrylic thingies. Our Shang stabbed Reiko like he walked out of a slasher flick, Titan Shang wouldn't do that.

To be honest, I was rather indifferent to Shang Tsung, but in MK1 he simply captured all my attention. His appearance? His mannerisms? Is he slaying? Is he a cunty? His voice? (Alan Lee deserves all this praise)

i have never been a shang tsung enjoyer until MK1. They really added a lot of flare to his character in this game and it made me really appreciate him a lot more

Shang Tsung is the Albert Wesker of Mortal Kombat. Trust me. Wesker was a cool character in RE1. His look and cool facade were appealing, the heel-turn made the climax of the game that much more impactful. And then when he "returned" in Code Veronica, he was elevated to this almost untouchable badass. He came back from the dead, he's got superpowers now, he's got a weird sexually charged rivalry with Chris now. It was good. It lasted a long time, and RE6 proved that a game without him, or an equally magnetic antagonist, was dead in the water.

Shang Tsung and Mortal Kombat are very similar. The first game was just so unlike anything I'd ever played before that the whole cast of characters are iconic to me. But it was the 1995 film that elevated Shang Tsung to these unreachable heights. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa owned that role and his is forever the version of Shang Tsung any other Shang Tsung will be compared to.

The biggest of props to Alan Lee for MK1 Shang Tsung. He manages to embody everything Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa brought to the character without it ever seeming like a cheap impersonation. His Shang Tsung is probably my next favorite behind OG movie and MK11 Shang Tsung.

But the thing with both of these characters is that their respective franchises have reached this tipping point where they can't craft a compelling and engaging narrative without leaning on them, and that's not a good thing.

IDK where I'm going with this. I've been drinking. But Shang Tsung and Wesker are goats who now serve as their respective series' crutches, too.

Alan Lee isn't Cary, but he comes damn close. This is a great rendition of what we would imagine Young Shang to be. On another note, it's either "Ssshang Tsung! " or "SoRCerER!!!" by everyone else. Or "Snake." Love how much fun he has with it and how many sides he shows to Shang.

Watching Mortal Kombat 1, and Alan Lee does a damn good imitation of Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa’s Shang Tsung. I also can’t help but be reminded of Yawgmoth from Magic: the Gathering with this iteration of the character within Liu Kang’s revamp of the universe.

I just hate the story this shang was in. If it wasn't for bad plot. And horrible direction.

This could have been an amazing young/early sorcerer days shang tsung.

Mr. Alan Lee,i feel if the script wasn't crap,the narrative didn't screw you over,and this game wasn't filled with useless microtransactions,and shitty gameplay. You would have been a perfect successor.

I personally feel if he was given a chance to bring his shang tsung to life more,make him actually intimidating,and add oomph to it. Then i feel like he could shine. Like i just feel he's held back. Like get angry dude! Genuinely,get pissed off! Make shang scary. And not in the cunning sense like they seem to shoehorn him into. Like yes that is a facet of his character,but only one small part. Shang is complex. And so should be his energy and expression. Like i feel mr. Lee was scared doing shang. But excited too going by his interviews. But i feel he was so worried a out disappointment,that he got blindsided by the bad writing. If i had a chance to write something for him. I would in a heartbeat. Give him a better narrative and story for his shang tsung.

I would absolutely looooove to write for mortal kombat. At very least shang tsungs part. And idc if it's "canon" or not. I just want a good story. That treats shang as the badass we KNOW he is. *sigh* alas i have to only share with my fellow shang tsimps. Not that that's all bad. I love you guys.
