My entry for the Maids of Gensokyo artbook, hosted by Tofucat Workshop in collaboration with the SG 2hu Lepak Corner!
I so, so, adore AkyuuSuzu, and I know that there's a subset of Taisho era maid style… which felt like a perfect opportunity to draw the two!
Thank you CM for hosting and giving me the opportunity to participate with the other artists

002 akyuu+kosuzu, 003... aya.
The akyuusuzu!
when or if I started shipping it: As soon as they were shown being friends in FS.my thoughts: This ship can go in whatever direction you want. Cute and fluffy? Sure. Tragic? Go for it. Sinful and wrong? Ooooh yes. Good ship. What makes me happy about them: Cute bookworms holding hands and blushing. What makes me sad about them: Akyuu’s gonna die before she hits 30 so they don’t have much time together.Things done in fanfic that annoys me: I haven’t seen anything yet.Things I look for in fanfic: I like cute akyuusuzu, but I really hunger for the wrong, twisted akyuusuzu, usually with Mamizou involved. That doujinshi featuring Kosuzu getting locked in a wooden prison is one of my favs, not gonna lie.My kinks: *sweats*Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Mamizou and Kosuzu are great together too, though things might get rocky considering recent canon developments. Kosuzu and Marisa is pretty cute too! I don’t really ship Akyuu with anyone else though. My happily ever after for them: Sitting close together, holding hands and fast asleep.
Aya
How I feel about this character: I like her! I was kinda neutral before, but then she showed up in FS and wow… Aya…All the people I ship romantically with this character: All Aya ships are good.My non-romantic OTP for this character: This isn’t a happy OTP but Aya and Kosuzu have a lot of potential. My unpopular opinion about this character: Can’t think of one sorryOne thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I hope she causes havoc in FS again soon.My OTP: none atmMy OT3: Momiji/Aya/Hatate wooo

How about Sumireko or lil' Suzy for the character ask?
I’m gonna go with Li’l Suzy bc i have more things to say about her
A ship I have with said character:
AKYUUSUZUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
AQSZ is life. In this realm of strange monstergirls and wacky shenanigans, two human girls? One is upper class and the other is a commoner? And they’re slowly in love? And they’re both girls? And youkais are involved? Peak ship. I gotta say it’s one of my main inspirations for the romantic dynamics of my OC so i hold a particular regard to this ship.
That is to say, one-sided SuzuMamizou where kosuzu looks up to “human” mamizou is an interesting one.
A BROTP I have with said character:
Somehow i can’t help but think her and marisa are very good friends.
A NOTP I have with said character:
I think SuzuMamizou would count? More like, actual romantic involvement, because i think one sided crush is a cool underrated concept and idk i’d think it’s creepy. But. I don’t think of it as a “NOTP”, more like “i don’t really ship it hehe”
A random headcanon:
The “Kosuzu runs around and the bells jingles” is the cutest. I don’t have too much headcanons aside of that and AkyuuSuzu headcanons that my Friends injected onto me with their AkyuuSuzu love juice
I’d like to think she’d be a good animal crossing player if she were in the human world.
General Opinion over said character:
I didn’t expect to love Kosuzu as much as i do now, but i think forbidden scrollery is a breath of fresh air. to see the point of view of a regular human from the human village in gensokyo is what touhou truly needed for it to be appealing. i’d dare say that the reason why FS is considered an entry-level manga for new fans (despite me disagreeing with that statement) is because of the fact that you kinda discover gensokyo’s antics through her eyes.
I think her dynamics with all the characters in FS are very well exploited. ZUN really know how to make characters interaction count. It’s all very lovely. Plus i adore her design and how moe harukawa draws her.
if reimu wasn’t the mascot of the franchise i’d say she’d be a strong contender for representative of the series haha, mostly for the aforementioned stuff. but FS is just a side material and the main games are the real deal.
when will we fight lil suzy in a danmaku contest?

kosuzu??
General Opinion: REMOVE | Dislike | Eh | Okay | Like | Love | WOULD FOLLOW INTO HELL | Yes she is also my wonderful granddaughter thank you for asking
Best Trait: probably the character who has the most interesting openminded opinions about youkai with respect to humans. yeah fuck you byakuren whats it like getting beaten the FUCK out by a human teenage girl
ok that was uncalled for. byakuren is cool. sorry ma’am. ur cool
(but still)
DID YOU SEE THAT CHARACTER GROWTH IN FS 49? SHE MADE HER OWN DECISION FOR ONCE THATS MY GIRL!!!
Worst Trait: she’s very trusting and a bit naive which is why everyone is worried for her at this very moment
OTPs: akyuusuzu is very, very good
OT3s/OTNs:
BroTPs: reimu, marisa
Characters I wish they’d interact with more: as mentioned, sumireko. maybe alice, because of [FS spoilers]. loads of youkai and humans are good characters for her to meet
Characters they should stay away from: [FS spoilers]
at this rate, reimu
im not gonna say yukari because no one should trust yukari, that’s yukari 101

how bout some AKQ or KSZU mah boi
Akyuu
General Opinion: REMOVE | Dislike | Eh | Okay | Like | Love | WOULD FOLLOW INTO HELL
Best Trait: Intelligence. It’s the main thing she has going for her and she knows how to use it... at least where the big picture is concerned.
Worst Trait: Akyuu. Please. Explain things in a straightforward manner. you could have prevented this
OTPs: AkyuuSuzu all the way.
OT3s/OTNs: None really.
BroTPs: Reimu. I have something of a headcanon that the Hieda and Hakurei families, being the more prominent ones in the village, are decently interrelated, so Reimu and Akyuu are second cousins or something on top of seeing each other due to their jobs. (Plus Akyuu started with black hair and now has purple hair, while Reimu went from purple to black.)
Characters I wish they’d interact with more: Keine. They’re canonically friends and fellow scholars but we only know this from Keine’s PMiSS article.
Characters they should stay away from: Mamizou, Yukari... I don’t think Akyuu has enough Ruse Levels to involve herself in whatever schemestorm is brewing around Kosuzu, even though she probably should for Kosuzu’s sake.
Kosuzu
General Opinion: REMOVE | Dislike | Eh | Okay | Like | Love | WOULD FOLLOW INTO HELL
Best Trait: Her curiosity drives her to understand the world around her, which is an interesting trait in Gensokyo.
Worst Trait: Kosuzu for the love of god buy up your Awareness and Common Lore (Not Getting Your Ass Killed) when you can spare the EXP
OTPs: See above. though I kind of have a desire for Yukari/Kosuzu now because I want to suffer
OT3s/OTNs: Nothing I can think of right now.
BroTPs: Reimu, Marisa, Aya.
Characters I wish they’d interact with more: Sumireko. It sounds a bit odd, but I want to see how Kosuzu’s curiosity would extend to the outside world. Also Rinnosuke, because Kosuzu’s fascination with the unusual plus Rinnosuke’s tendency to make up completely bullshit explanations sounds like an excellent formula for comedy.
Characters they should stay away from: Mamizou. Yukari maybe; Forbidden Scrollery 49 fucked me up, I don’t know what to feel.

Day 25: Misunderstanding
The bouquet of flowers is… unexpected.
Akyuu invited Kosuzu over to the Hieda estate on short notice to aid her in some specific work regarding the Chronicle. She didn't exactly expect her friend to bring some kind of gift.
"I mean, this place where you live is so vast and impressive!" Kosuzu says hurriedly, holding out the bouquet of flowers to Akyuu. "I'd look bad if I showed up empty-handed!" She pauses for a moment, looking sheepish. "I hope you don't mind?"
After a brief pause, Akyuu accepts the flowers with both hands, smiling. "Well, thank you. I'm sure these flowers will liven up the place greatly."
Kosuzu smiles abashedly, rubbing the back of her head. She glances around warily, To be honest, the girl looks downright intimidated by this large estate. Akyuu feels vaguely discomforted seeing that expression on Kosuzu's face.
When Akyuu visits Kosuzu at her family's shop, the atmosphere there is far more amicable and comfortable; there, Akyuu feels like she can just be herself. Friend-to-friend, equal-to-equal.
But here, with the way all the servants defer to her, it feels a bit more… unbalanced.
Akyuu shakes her head. No use in dwelling on that. There's work to be done. As she turns around to lead Kosuzu to where they'll be working, she takes a closer look at the bouquet of flowers in her arms.
Red camellias and cactus flowers. Certainly a unique combination.
In the language of flowers, that means…
Akyuu stumbles in disbelief. She turns slightly, sneaking a quick glimpse at Kosuzu's face. As quick as Akyuu is about it, Kosuzu catches her glance and returns a hesitant, but warm smile.
Oh.
Oh dear.
Akyuu doesn't know what to do with this new information.
She certainly can't say anything about here, what with all of her servants possibly listening in. The walls here are thin.
So for the time being, she makes a conscious effort to not visibly react and pushes the thought to the back of her mind, promising herself that she would properly devote some attention to this later.
*
Akyuu puts off her next visit to the Suzunaan for a few days, and when she shows up, she feels uncharacteristically tense and nervous.
She's not even sure it's a good idea to bring it up. Would it not be wiser to save the girl from sadness and loneliness of losing someone at a young age? Kosuzu's a very likeable girl; surely there are plenty of better-suited partners for her.
They greet each other as usual and settle into their typical routine of exchanging pleasant small talk about various books and other interesting topics.
When there's a lull in the conversation, Akyuu hesitantly broaches the topic. "So… about the flowers you gave me the other day," she says.
Kosuzu brightens up. "Oh? I hope you liked them!"
Akyuu takes a moment to compose her thoughts. "To be completely honest, I'm not certain if the Hieda elders would even approve of such a relationship, let alone one between two people of the same sex. They're overbearing enough as it is, and I do not wish to make time in this life even more unnecessarily unpleasant. So if anything is to happen, it preferably be not too public or well-known…"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa," says Kosuzu, looking slightly flustered. "Uhhhh are you talking about?... I mean, don't get me wrong, it's not like I don't… I mean to me, you… But… uh…" She runs her hands through her hair, glancing away. "Why are you bringing this up all of a sudden? I'm just kinda lost here."
Akyuu's heart jumps in her chest. Did she misinterpret her friend's intentions? "The…" Akyuu says. "The flowers you gave me. Red camellias and cactus flowers. In the language of the flowers…"
"Language of the flowers?" Kosuzu's eyes widen. "Huh? I mean, I just grabbed the first flowers I saw from the flower shop when I was on my way to your place."
Akyuu blinks slowly. "So you didn't intend anything in particular by those flowers."
"Not really? I mean, I tried to pick pretty ones that would look nice. They were kind of a snap decision, though, since I was in a hurry. I didn't want to keep you waiting." Kosuzu pauses. "Wait, so what do those flowers mean, then?"
Akyuu buries her face in her hands. "Never mind. Please forget what I said."
There's a short pause.
Then, Kosuzu gets up, making her way towards the bookshelves. "I think we have a Hanakotoba around here somewhere. Lemme just look it up real fast…"
Akyuu grabs Kosuzu's ankle.
She looks back. "Huh?"
Akyuu avoids making eye contact, carefully putting on the airs of a stoic, unflustered demeanor. "It's not necessary."
Kosuzu stares at Akyuu, and then continues trying to pull her way towards the bookshelf, dragging Akyuu a short distance along the floor. "It'll just take a minute…"
"No."
"C'mon Akyuu…"
"You don't need to!"
"Let go, Akyuu," Kosuzu struggles to make her way towards the bookshelf as Akyuu desperately tries to drag her back to the table. "Geez, you're so stubborn!"
"You are the one who is being stubborn!"
Kosuzu suddenly lets out a hiss of pain, falling to the ground. "Ow, I think you tore something!"
Akyuu recoils as if touching a hot stove, immediately releasing her grip. "Kosuzu? I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you. Are you all right?"
Kosuzu pauses for a moment, just crouched on the floor there, clutching her ankle in pain.
Then, she glances up at Akyuu, a victorious smirk on her face. Before Akyuu can react, Kosuzu is jumping to her feet and sprinting for the bookshelves.
"Wha—?" It takes a moment for Akyuu to understand what just happened. She jumps to her feet. "You tricked me!"
"TooBadSucksForYou!" Kosuzu says as she runs through the bookshelves, rapidly scanning the spines for the book she wants.
Akyuu is only a few seconds behind, and rapidly closing the distance between them.
But Kosuzu owns this bookshop and she has a pretty solid idea of where everything is. By the time Akyuu catches up, tackling Kosuzu from behind, the bookworm already has a flower language book in her hands, flipping rapidly through the pages.
Akyuu scrabbles for the book, trying to grab it out of Kosuzu's hands. "Give me the book!"
"No, it's mine!"
"Please! I'll explain later. Just give me the book."
"Like heck you will! Imma just find out right here right now!"
Kosuzu spins around as she continues to maneuver the book out of reach from Akyuu, all while Akyuu continues trying to grapple with Kosuzu for control over the book.
And then Akyuu slips slightly on her robes, falling forwards and accidentally slamming Kosuzu against one of the bookshelves.
Kosuzu glances up and freezes as Akyuu falls forward towards her.
With an outstretched arm, Akyuu manages to catch herself just before their faces collide, but their faces are too close, too close.
Remembering the topic of what she had been trying to prevent Kosuzu from finding out, Akyuu immediately backpedals, her face heating up like mad. "Oh, uh. Sorry."
Kosuzu seems just is flustered as Akyuu herself is, in any case. "No. Yeah. It's fine."
They stay like that for a moment, in their awkward, distanced, sprawled positions on the ground.
Then Kosuzu picks up the book again and then flips rapidly through the pages.
It's not like Akyuu can stay here 24/7 to prevent her from finding out; she's going to find out eventfully. So resigned, defeated, Akyuu watches on helplessly as Kosuzu hunts for the relevant pages in the book.
And it looks like she finds the correct one. Her face turns red. "Oh. Ah. Okayyyyyy then."
The silence is deafening.
Akyuu looks away. "Now then, if you'll excuse me, I just need to walk into a river, I'll be right back—"
"No!" Kosuzu sits up, reaching forward and grabbing Akyuu by the shoulder. She smiles weakly. "I mean you have to admit, this is kinda funny, right? Right?"
Akyuu just sits there. "Ugh." She pinches the bridge of her nose. "Is it all right if we just… forget this? I apologize for making things awkward."
Kosuzu laughs loudly. "No, it's not awkward at all! Not awkward at all!" She waves her hands rapidly, giggling hysterically.
Akyuu covers her face with her hands. Dear Yama, it feels like her face on fire. This is so embarrassing.
"…But since you brought it up," says Kosuzu. "You are interested in dating, then? …If you're still up for that?"
Akyuu glances up, staring in disbelief.
Kosuzu returns the glance, hiding most of her face behind the book.
"Oh." Akyuu blinks. "Are you saying… you are actually amenable to that idea, then?"
"It's not like I have anything against dating you, to be honest," says Kosuzu. She fidgets slightly, glancing away for a brief moment, before returning her gaze to Akyuu. "I mean, it's not like I haven't thought about that kind of thing before. But I didn't want to say anything because, well, I just don't really know much about this kind of stuff." She makes a complicated expression. "Like… all this Hieda clan stuff is kinda advanced for me. And I'm just an ordinary girl…"
Akyuu makes a sound. "None of that clan stuff really matters. To me, you are someone I care for deeply, and that's all that matters."
Kosuzu smiles. "If this doesn't work out, we can still be friends, right?"
"…That goes without saying, does it not?" says Akyuu.
Kosuzu grins, clenching her fists. "All right! Let's give this a shot, then! Pleasure to be trying this out with you, girlfriend!"
Akyuu looks away covering her mouth with her hand. "…Likewise." There's a short pause. She needs a moment to let it all sink in, because she's still not entirely sure she believes that this is actually happening.
She sees a blur of motion in her peripheral vision, and then suddenly something warm presses against her cheek for a brief moment.
Akyuu freezes. Hesitating, she reaches up and touches the warm spot on her cheek, and then looks up at Kosuzu, who's slowly leaning back from the kiss.
"Oh, sorry, was that too forward of me?" asks Kosuzu, looking slightly sheepish.
"No, it's fine…" Akyuu glances away, her face heating up. "It was just unexpected, that's all."
"Is that so?" Kosuzu smiles.
Well then.
This is… happening now, Akyuu supposes.
