Queliot S1 Frenemies to Lovers

A turn of events make it so Quentin and Eliot dislike each other from day one. Eliot thinks he’s too much of a brat, Quentin argues that Eliot is too fake. Quentin is ridiculous and Eliot is too conceited. And so a rivalry is born. They’re both friends with Margo though so they have to deal with each other — plus there’s the fact that they live in the same house. One night while drinking they end up in Eliot’s bed. Then they end up in Quentin’s bed. Which starts another series of events. They claim it’s hate sex of course — that it’s the only time the other isn’t annoying, the only time the other does something right. But of course, things start to change and their rivalry starts getting friendlier by the minute. Until they’re both too deep to notice that well it’s not just sex anymore. They actually seem to enjoy each other’s company. Maybe Bambi was right — if they got out of their heads they could end up being good friends. The only problem now is getting one of them to admit it.

I remember finishing that scene and being like... this is it. This is the best sex scene I’ve ever written. And while I think I’ve written better and hotter (and much wordier lmao) scenes since.... at the time it was probably true? And it’s been a while so it’s not super fresh in my memory, but I do recall there being some really fun banter in there as well and !!! I loved writing it so much. And it makes me so happy that you love it that much. <3

exactly what it says on the tin. i really like a lot of the bits i’ve written for this but i haven’t quite worked out the way to make it... work, yet.

“Woah, what the fuck is that?”

Previous demure demeanour gone so suddenly it conjures the sensation of fingers snapping, she settles back over his hips to get a better look and he sighs, sitting up to unfasten his sleeves and shrug himself properly from his shirt.

“It’s a glucose monitor,” he says.

“You’re diabetic?”

“No,” he snaps, defensive now, “I just like to keep track of what’s going into my body.”

“Currently reconsidering what’s about to be going into my body,” she says, under her breath but not really, and the way she tilts her head, still studying him, makes his skin burn. “Kinda feels like I’m about to fuck a robot.”

His gaze shifts pointedly to the sex toy on her nightstand, arching a judgmental brow, before returning to slide the soft swell of her stomach. “Would you prefer it if we pretended I had diabetes? Seems like that could be an informational role play for you."

She pinches him, hard, just below where the monitor is embedded in his skin, and makes sure to dig in the tips of her nails. He hisses, jerking and nearly dislodging her in the process. “Jesus! What is wrong with you?”

RIGHT. like, another thing i enjoy about the playful back-and-forth between the roses and the townspeople is that, while the roses learn lessons that clearly have a lasting influence, the family members aren’t actually, like, fundamentally changed as people. it’s part of their charm. but it also makes the implication that things’ll be A-OK for the fam too much of a stretch.

12. Who is your favorite author?

Oh gosh. I’m going to have to answer this in multiple parts. So Angela Carter is probably my overall favorite. For horror: Paul Tremblay. For fantasy: T. Kingfisher. Others I need to mention: Leigh Bardugo, Victoria Schwab, Deanna Raybourn. I feel like I’m forgetting the entire world.

28. Is there a part of Ruins you’re surprised no one has picked up on yet?

Hmm. A few things. The first, I’ve dropped only a very small hint of and I haven’t seen anybody remark on it - no additional details here because it relates to End Spoilers. The second, several people have sort of noticed but I haven’t handed out all the pieces yet - this one is about Felassan. The third, something woven into the entire story regarding the nature of Lavellan and Solas’ relationship to each other. I’ve seen a few nods in the right direction on this one (and it has the most hints that are already in the published chapters, so it makes sense that people pick up on it more).

34. Have you felt emotional while writing a scene before? What scene was it?

Um yeah, all the time, so much. This is going to sound silly, but I have this feeling that I think of as “ecstatic writing,” by which I mean I manage to get to a point (almost always thanks to music) where I’ve just got the emotion so clearly in my mind that it’s a lot easier to write it out, and the words really start to flow. 

A lot of times I just need to listen to a song on repeat to get to this point. I’ve definitely talked before about listening to North by Sleeping at Last when I was writing the Roots chapter of Ruins. More recently, I listened to Wanna Be by Betty Who while writing the most recent Ruins chapter (which is going to sound absolutely bonkers if you know the song or read the lyrics, so hear me out).

Sometimes, as with North, the song is actually is relevant to what’s going on in the scene itself. But then, with Wanna Be - that’s a song about being jealous (but in a kind of desperate, pathetic, torch-song way) because the person you love is in love with someone else. That is definitely not what’s going on in Ruins but something about the fearlessness and lack of shame in the lyrics and sound of that song resonated hugely with me while I was writing that chapter. It made me feel like writing something unapologetic and unhidden. I can’t really explain why it worked, I just knew it did, so I stuck it on repeat and ran with it.

1. A single line or phrase in something that you wrote that you are really proud of?

Ooh, so so many! I’m fond of the line in Craquelure that goes “The fact that history has not forgotten Yakov Feltsman, and has in fact elevated him to the point of imitation, provides Victor with a small sense of resolution—a single piece of closure for a life and death filled with creaking open doors.” I like clever little visual allusions like that.

5. Something old you wrote that you would like to revisit/revise now?

I very badly want to go back and completely rewrite my abandoned Myst AU, We Are Wanderers Still, which I wrote in present tense at the time, a decision which now utterly baffles me because it doesn’t suit the tone I wanted at all.

15. What’s your favourite part of writing something brand new?

Hands down it’s the first few days or weeks of crackling inspiration and the conviction that this time I won’t get any writer’s block at all.
