Adding on to all the previous discussions of post-SAO readjustment

How did surviving SAO affect the survivor's enjoyment of full dive games as a whole?

When they log in, is their immediate instinct to check if the log out button is still there? Do they freak out when their health bar dips below half? When they kill another player, be it PVP or self defense, is there ever a moment afterwards where they believe they've killed them IRL? Worse yet, if they die in a game they're playing, does their AmuSphere trigger the safety logout due to a sharp spike in their heartbeat?

The cardinal system is something I believe all full dive games use for easier management, though to a lesser degree from the one used in SAO. Unless a game is vastly different in genre, I imagine most will feel pretty similar to SAO. ALO in particular has an extremely similar menu layout too. Just out of muscle memory, does an SAO survivor open that menu and begin scrolling through their items list, looking for something that only existed in Aincrad? or get confused when a skill they once had is no longer there? Forgetting they're a lower level than their previous avatars and as a result, picking fights with higher level monsters because they think they can take it has gotta be a common occurrence. That, or being overly conscious of their level and limiting themselves to weaker mobs, despite the fact there's no longer a real risk of death.

Also ALO has dungeons that disable its flight mechanic. I am willing to bet that SAO survivors go into these dungeons, leave, and completely forget flight is a thing until they've already walked like half the distance to the nearest settlement lmfao

On a related but also kinda seperate note, some of my favorite scenes in the anime include 1) Kirito's panic attack immediately following his first meeting with Death Gun/XaXa, and 2) his talk later on with Nurse Aki regarding his guilt over killing 3 Laughing Coffin members. They're one of the few instances we get to see the PTSD that most, if not all SAO survivors likely suffer. The reason I bring these scenes from the GGO arc up specifically is because GGO is the furthest from SAO someone can get, least before the Seed. So how many survivors flocked to GGO because of its vast differences, and how did they feel when rumors of a player able to kill someone through their avatar started sprouting up?

And speaking of the Seed, when New Aincrad was created, there had to have been some survivors deeply upset by its creation. On the other side of the coin, there had to have been survivors that felt almost too excited at the prospect of Aincrad being back. Different in a lot of ways, but still. Either way, it's kind of funny picturing some player who starts their ascent later than everyone else, goes to the very first floor boss (cause they've fought Illfang before, they know what to do), only to be absolutely gobsmacked when they encounter the floor boss that very much is not the big scaly rat they were expecting

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

danny: i find him endearing :) i like that he gets bullied and hes a pushover. i think danny he doesnt have very many concrete canon traits and tends to go with what people around him say--you can take his character in a lot of different directions without it contradicting canon. i like that. hes fun to play around w/

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

danny: he beats himself up a lot trying to be a good person. it was not helped much what with his family and loved ones all exploding and dying after he decided to cheat on a test. he started fighting back against dash in reign storm only for sam+tuck to tell him how disappointed they were and for vlad to go on a whole bit about how they were so alike now.

the few times we see danny try to stand up for himself he gets a lot of pushback from both his friends and the narrative overall. reign storm AND splitting images had the moral of 'danny you have superpowers so you should just let yourself be bullied.' i hc he has a lot of pent up aggression since he never lets himself be anything other than a hero. and secretly loves beating up ghosts because it gives him an excuse to take it out on someone. see one of a kind: "hello misplaced aggression!"

vlad: hes fucking crazy hes sick in the head. i think he wants to fuck danny. hes some sort of ghost vampire. i have too many vlad theories to even get into. i think he fucks his duplicates also and he is so sad and lonely. he clings onto the idea of maddie as a romantic partner in part bc he believes it's out of his grasp. he wouldnt know what to do if he actually had everything he said he wants (maddie as a wife jack dead and jazz and danny as the perfect obedient children) and if he ever did Miraculously achieve that he would get really really frustrated bc he still wasnt happy and he did everything right so why isnt he happy now.

he clings onto Maddie the Concept because for years in da hospital thoughts of revenge were like the only thing that motivated him to even try to stay alive. the fantasy is very intergral to his personality and he is unwilling to let go of it bc then he wont know what he has to live for. until dannyy shows up! #pompep sweep

danny: dunno. u can fit a lot into him. normie protag mold. i guess hes sort of like kirito from sao.

Fandom: One Piece

Topic: Luffy

Sub-Topic: The Moron

!Spoiler Warning!

I’m gonna (try to) make a much more broad topic essay about Luffy as a member of the strawhats later, but I was watching a video by LonerBox titled “Joe Rogan and the Hard Men” (which is really good, sidenote) and I started to think about the type of ‘Main Character’ that Luffy is and…I decided to write about it!

Clarification: This post isn’t supposed to be attacking the characterization of other main characters from various shows, even the ones I will bring up in this essay. For every character mentioned in this essay, keep in mind that I have either watched all the shows and/or I am an active fan of the show. I’m not here to say that Luffy is the best main character ever, I’m really just trying to break down why I specifically am as attached to him compared to other main characters I’ve seen before. 

Stupid and Straightforward: For anime specifically there tends to be two types of main male characters in like shogun anime: 

The Genius  

The Moron

The best example of this trope is with Chainsaw Man. To avoid spoiling as much as I can, Denji is your trademark stupid guy. He has a one track mind and little to no patience or sense of decorum. He’s more than a little selfish, cocky, and has zero sense of self-preservation. He also enjoys eating out, making friends, and hanging out with Power, you know…the simple things. He’s your Moron. Aki on the other hand is your stuck-up twat. He’s cold, and serious. He’s got a tragic backstory that fuels his passion. He hates how dependable Denji is for how fucking stupid he acts, while also being pretty destructive when he wants. He’s your Genius. 

This is a very common trope because it creates a bit of light-hearted tension between characters without it having to mean anything more than they have completely different personality traits. Natsu vs Gray (or Natsu vs Erza) from Fairy Tail, Tamaki vs Kyoya from Ouran Highschool Host club, Kirito vs Asuna from Sword Art Online, etc. (I know, I have a pretty shit taste in Anime but my point still stands). Even in traditional media it’s not uncommon to see the laid-back, do nothing, extraverted character becoming sort-of-frenemies with the quiet, up-tight, introverted character in an opposites attract kind of way. 

Of course not all main characters fall into this grouping (Tanjiro from Demon Slayer, Yumeko from Kakegurui, Light and L from Death Note, etc.) but the more simple the anime is the more likely, in my experience, that these kinds of characters are used. 

As I mentioned before, this is not a critique of this trope, if anything it's my analysis of why I like the trope as much as I do, but I digress.

When we first meet Luffy, it’s obvious that he’s supposed to be the moron. From falling asleep in a barrel when he can easily drown, to not noticing the bad situation he’s in, to not taking the easy way out of said situation (i.e. just complementing Alveria), to announcing he will be King of the Pirates, this is our lovable moron. The more we watch the show/read the manga, the more he checks the boxes: Selfish? Check. Zero self-preservation? Check. Enjoying the simple things? Check? No Patience? Double Check. 

Alright we have our moron, now we need our genius. I’m putting emphasis on need here because without a genius the moron can be a little…hard to be around. The reason the duality works is because it lets the viewer enjoy the best parts of both personalities without having to deal with all the negatives. Without the genius, the moron can hit a break wall and try to brute force their way through it without figuring out a logical way out, while without the moron, the genius can waste time by wanting to plan out every possible step. With that said, now we need the genius…well that’s when One Piece I think, really starts to show what makes it different.

Not a Braincell in Sight: One Piece has its fair share of smart characters. From characters held as geniuses like Law and Robin, to geniuses in their field like all the strawhats, to kings and princesses there has never really been a shortage of smart people in the show that could be used as the genius to Luffy’s moron but…it doesn’t. It’s kind of implied that everyone on the ship is smarter than Luffy, by occasionally a comically wide margin. Even characters that the strawhats meet later, even the fucking kids they meet later, are smarter than Luffy by comparison, but it doesn’t matter. 

Because He Runs The Ship.

Whether that be literally, in that he is the Captain or because he’s probably right and so everyone has to just follow his lead. He’s a selfish moron, but he’s also exactly what every person he meets needs. When he meets Vivi, she has overcomplicated her task. Not only does she have to save Alabasta, but she has to do it without anyone dying. She outlines how best to do it, planning, plotting, strategizing. Luffy breaks it down for her, he has to beat Crocodile and then everything will work out. Is he wrong? Not really. Without Crocodile, the Baroque Works has no reason to keep framing the king and with due time, peace will come. You can of course speed up this process if you fix your perception and build back trust before the end of the war, but it doesn’t make it wrong. The same thing happens at Dressrosa with Doflamingo. Luffy’s right to kick Doflamingo’s Ass, not just because he’s a douchebag, but because what brain cell was Law running on to think that if Luffy and him can’t beat Doflamingo, that beating Kaido is even possible. Luffy picks who to fight, Luffy picks how far into other people’s problems he’s going to go, Luffy saves whoever he wants whenever he wants. Everyone else in One Piece acts as the Genius, the people who are too into their own thoughts to get out of their own misery. Sanji and Franky refusing to join because of a debt they created for themselves, Chopper, Usopp, and Robin not believing that they have the right to join such a crew, Zoro and Nami not believing that they’re strong enough, and Brook’s total insanity. They are the one’s complicating their lives, and Luffy is here to simplify things. 

I’m Going to Become King of The Pirates! 

Luffy doesn’t know what the practical application of those words mean. He doesn’t know about Laugh Tale, or the Polyglyphs, or the Warlords and Emperors that he’ll need to fight to get there…because his job is to be the moron. The simple minded, self-sacrificing, impatient, child who gets his way no matter what. Every other character in the show acts as the genius, but not to dull his loud personality but rather to protect it.  His crew is tasked with knowing everything else, his only real job is to always win…and he always does!

Conclusion: As I have mentioned before I can write a million essays about Luffy as a character, but to me he’s a character that knows that he is the moron. He cannot use a sword, or cook, he cannot sail, or snipe, he cannot bandage wounds, or read the polyglyphs, or fix ships, or write songs. He knows his limitations and does his best. He can not be the Pirate King without his friends, and no one knows that more than him. 

I love the silly little stretchy boy with my whole heart!

A Look At Stuff You Probably Never Heard Of: Cheat Slayer

This one is different from most of the stuff I take a look at. This one is actually fairly recent; about a couple months ago at the time of posting this. We’re taking a look at a manga that was intended to be a series, but ended up being relegated to a single chapter. Today, we’re taking a look at... Cheat Slayer!

Cheat Slayer (full title being “Killing the People Reincarnated into the Other World: Cheat Slayer” is a manga written by Homura Kawamoto, creator of Kakegurui with illustrations by Aki Yamaguchi. It was released on June 9th, 2021 and published by Fujimi Shobo as a part of Monthly Dragon Age magazine. It was also described as a revenge story “coated with hate and desire”.

Since there was only one chapter released, this post will go over the synopsis of the single chapter.

In this world, skilled wariors who came from other worlds arrived to fight against the Demon Lord. These warriors are known as “Reincarnates”, as they “Reincarnated” into this world, acquiring special “Cheat Skills” that give them inhuman powers. The story itself follows a young villager named Lute, marveling at the Reincarnates and their skills and heroism, wanting to be just like them, talking about them with his childhood friend, Lydia.

However, the two suddenly find their home village on fire. Before they could do anything, one of the Reincarnate heroes, Louis Crawford, appears and snaps Lute’s neck before attacking Lydia. Somehow, Lute is alive, but unable to move, but sees Louis... “using” Lydia’s body after killing her while two other Reincarnates, Honda Yuya and Don Will Dead, admonishing Louis for his sloppy behavior, telling him to be sure to clean up.

Some time later, a witch revives Lute and asks for his assistance in killing the Reincarnates, knowing he desires revenge. The witch reveals that each of the heroes, or as she refers to them as “pieces of trash” were just ordinary people who were given special powers when reincarnated.

Not long after, Lute arrives as a dance hall of some sort, looking for Louis to bring back to the witch so she can kill him. Louis himself is being entertained by two women, flirting with them until he gets handsy with one of them. When he starts acting forceful, she resists, only for Louis to point out that he could kill everyone in the building in seconds and no one could stop him and if she understood, then she should “start sucking”. But upon seeing Lute still alive, he immediately rushes to confront him and is just about to kill him until he refers to Louis as a “NEET bastard”, surprising Louis. The last line spoken being Lute saying “Why don’t you come have some tea with me? After that, I’ll kill you.”

The manga may be short, but the art style is interesting, making good use of shading. It also helps whenever the scene’s tone suddenly shifts from light and friendly to dark and foreboding. Some of the panels even seem like something out of Kakegurui.

And while I highly doubt this will mean anything, here’s the Final Recommendation: Never Let Go Of It||Get It||Hold Onto It||Try It||Consider It||Stay Away From It

As mentioned before, this manga only got one chapter, being cancelled shortly after release. As for why; in case it wasn’t obvious, it’s because of the plagiarism with Japan having very strict copyright laws. And even then, the Reincarnate parodies are very close to their originals. Obviously, Honda is a parody of Subaru from Re;Zero (and his title is “Looper”, referring to Subaru’s Return by Death), Don Will Dead is a parody of Ainz Ooal Gown from Overlord with his title being “The Undead King”. And obviously, Kilt is Kirito from Sword Art Online, with his title being “The Dual Wielding Black Knight”, referring to Kirito’s expertise and perchance for dual-wielding.

Other parodies include Louis “God’s Mistake” Crawford, who is a parody of Shin Wolford from Wise Man’s Grandchild. Funnily enough, Louis is known for having a sword that’s powerful enough to kill gods, while Shin has no such sword, merely a vibration blade. There’s also Flare, who, despite sharing the same name as the princess from Redo of Healer, is actually a parody of Aqua from Konosuba, with her title being “Fallen Goddess”. Imerda Pinata, the “Daughter Villainess” is a parody of Catarina Claes from My Next Life as a Villainess. Roro Sendiger, the “Named Slime” is Rimuru from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Yukiko Shijo, the “Otherworld Restaurant” is Aletta from Restaurant to Another World. Finally, there’s  Anastasia Melokva, the “Young Demon”, a parody of Tanya from The Saga of Tanya the Evil.

To be honest, I find this to be needlessly edgy and dark. And the fact that the bad guys are basically characters from other Isekai series makes it feel somewhat antagonistic and petty. And from what I understand, the parodies, or at least Louis, is practically nothing like Shin.

Nowadays, Kawamoto is working on a new isekai series known as “Humanity's Existence Depends on Love Gambling with Another World's Princess”.

Now, before I sign off, there is one thing I want to mention. Fuse, the creator of That Time I Got Reincaranted as a Slime, was actually upset with the evil parody of Rimuru, but was actually annoyed he wasn’t contacted in the first place. Apparently, he liked the idea of an evil Rimuru and would have enjoyed brainstorming ideas.
