Japan and South Korea’s idol problem...

Recently I’ve been checking year end charts, overall sales and which artists made an impact in Japan and South Korea, and noticed the huge lack of idols apart from the usual suspects (BTS, Arashi, BlackPink and Perfume are doing just fine). In Japan the general public pretty much stopped caring about idols since around 2012. Small and big idol groups however carved out a niche genre for themselves and sell albums with all kinds of gimmicks (fansigns, multiple album covers, collecting photo cards, special releases, handshake events etc.) and are able to hold tours, where fans would attend multiple shows to show support.

Same thing is happening in South Korea where idol music is no longer relevant enough to top charts or make news. Companies have started to bore everyone with constant releases and never ending debuts with overlapping concepts. But since, like in Japan, idols have become their own bubble some groups are able to work consistently and grow a loyal fanbase. Now the problem is - how long can the industry be sustainable that way? The fact that both Japan and Korea failed to keep idols mainstream enough and instead let them become irrelevant to the public is pretty curious. Only some dinosaurs that debuted in the 2000s in Japan and a few groups from the “Big 4″ in Korea have name recognition. Some might say, this is the reason why companies have become so much more fixated at getting fans outside of their home country. Even reluctant Japan is noticing the opportunities that lie in the international market and is looking outside of Japan to make money. But what’s going to happen if the West, the US in particular, loses interest in this new idol genre that Asia is pushing?

I’m afraid this idol bubble that has been growing over the past decade is going to burst soon and Covid seems to speed up that process. The end result will be a much smaller, less influential music industry that will continue to shrink. Arashi has been the top idol group in Japan for almost 20 years and now they’re gone. Perfume, who debuted in 2003, are still the most recognized girl group in Japan, but the trio is concentrating more and more on solo projects. AKB48 was trendy for a while and definitely at the top from between 2010-2012, then fell into obscurity along with their sister groups, who were marketed as newer, better versions. Soon BTS will enlist and there is no one in the world of k-pop that comes even close to their success and reach. BlackPink is the biggest girl group at the moment, especially in the West. But once their contract is up, the group could disband. Since k-pop agencies have a pretty bad track record keeping their idols for longer than 7/10 years, this has been a problem for a long time.

Because of Covid groups are no longer able to tour and their companies are losing money. In Japan the situation has gotten so bad, that big agencies like Avex are cutting lose all artists that are not bringing in enough money. In Korea dozens of groups were forced to disband last year, because agencies couldn’t sustain them, most of their income came from public events. Over 100.000 people lost their jobs in the music industry in both countries combined last year as revenue fell by 80% - only established musicians are going to get out of this crisis unscathed. Which is why having name recognition in their home country is so important. It’s what’s saving most of these idols in Japan and Korea right now. Being well known or having an agency that is well known. The fandom is necessary to have a long lasting career, but to be liked by the general public is necessary to have a career at all. So how are Japan and South Korea going to tackle this issue? We’ll see. The West completely failed at it and all the big boy and girl groups of the 90′s disbanded and seemingly nothing could make that era return.

New Rookie Girl Groups to Look Out For So Far in 2020

Since these posts have been getting a lot of attention and I like to promote the groups I love, I thought I’d go ahead and make a post about all the rookie girl groups I’m falling for! Also I’ll probably be updating this post as the year goes on and all the groups officially debut.

1. woo!ah!

Woo!ah! is the first group under nv Entertainment, run by a former SM employee. They debuted on May 15th with their single album Exclamation, with the song woo!ah! (on both 1theK and their YouTube channel) and the b-side Payday! They’re best known for their TikTok account (wooah_nv) where they post dances, covers, cute videos, and challenges. The members in order of the photo below are Wooyeon (lead vocalist and visual, born in 2003), Lucy (main rapper, vocalist, born in 2004), Nana (the leader and lead everything, born in 2001), Minseo (main vocalist, main dancer, born in 2004), Sora (vocalist, rapper, born in 2003, the only Japanese member), and Songyee (lead dance, vocalist and rapper, maknae born in 2004). Unfortunately because they just debuted they haven’t been on any shows yet, but they do upload frequently on their YouTube channel and they had an appearance on Gap Crush. Their concept is kind of teen crush, similar to that of Cignature and since they upload frequently on social media there’s always content from them!

2. Secret Number

Secret Number is a five member girl group under Vine Entertainment. They debuted May 19th with their single Who Dis? and b-side Holiday. You’ve probably seen something about them floating around on the internet, as people have been pretty excited about their debut since the lineup was announced. They do have a YouTube channel where they posted some covers and they interact with fans through Instagram lives (secretnumber.official) but because they just debuted they haven’t been on any shows. However you can find the short interviews during their showcase with English subs (1, 2, 3, 4). The members in order of the photo below are Léa (leader and vocalist, born in 1994, Japanese), Soodam (lead vocalist and dancer, visual, born in 1999), Jinny (main rapper and lead dancer, born in 1998, Korean-American and a former YG trainee), Dita (main dancer and lead vocalist, born in 1996, the first Indonesian idol), and Denise (main vocalist and maknae, born in 2001, also Korean-American and a former YG trainee). This group is unique for a number of reasons, considering that the Japanese member is the leader and four of the five members were born/grew up in another country. They have a girl crush concept and I’d really recommend that you check them out!

3. REDSQUARE

REDSQUARE is a five member girl group under About Entertainment. For this group it’s a bit harder to find information because the company was pretty quiet about them before posting teasers, but I do know that four of the members were in Good Day (the same group Cignature members were in). Another member, Heejin, was supposed to debut with the group but it seems like she left as member Lina replaced her. They made their debut on May 19th with the song ColorFul and the most interesting MV I’ve seen in a long time (watch it on their channel or on Seoul Music). They don’t show their faces in the MV and it seems like their concept is about feeling boxed in and judged, you can see that in their prequel. Starting from the left, the members are: Lina (main vocalist, born in 1997, already debuted as a soloist known as Blenn), Bomin (main rapper, lead dancer, vocalist, visual, face of the group AND maknae, born in 2001), Green (lead vocalist, visual, and center, born in 1997), Ari (lead vocalist, born in 1999), and ChaeA (Main Dancer, Lead Rapper, and Vocalist, born in 1997). They haven’t been on any shows yet but they did release an interview (without subs unfortunately). I’m really happy that the ex-Good Day members are giving things a second shot! Their concept is very elegant and mysterious and I’d recommend you all check it out!

4. Weeekly

Weeekly, formerly known as PlayM Girls or Fave Girls, is a seven member girl group under PlayM Entertainment, home to Apink. A lot of you might find them familiar as they’ve been active on TikTok and YouTube posting covers pre-debut and some of the members were on MIXNINE. They are set to debut in June and have been uploading teaser videos and short clips on their YouTube channel. I’d highly recommend you check out their series of videos called [The Weeekly Story] as they show all of the members, introduce their concept/lore, and are incredibly aesthetic. They post a ton on TikTok (@weeekly) so I’d recommend you follow them there as well! Also, since they post so much content pre-debut, their Kprofile’s page is REALLY detailed. Because there’s so much information on them, I’d recommend you go check out that profile to get to know them. The awesome thing about this photo teaser? All the names are under the photos. My bias is Monday and I personally can’t wait for them to debut!

5. Mystic Story Girls

Mystic Entertainment (a subsidiary of SM Entertainment) got my hopes up when they confirmed the lineup of their new girl group, but then have yet to set a debut date. Sigh.... However, we do know they will be debuting sometime this year. The lineup will most likely be familiar to you, because a lot of these girls are known! From left to right, the members are Miyu (known from AKB48 and Produce 48), Soomin (known from Produce 101 AND MIXNINE, used to be in the lineup for PlayM girls), Sua (a former YG trainee known from Unpretty Rapstar season 2), Suhyeon (known from Produce 101 and MIXNINE), Haram (a former SM trainee), Tsuki (former SM trainee), and Siyoon (model and child dancer). While they don’t have a ton of content yet, the members have done Listen Stage’s on the company’s YouTube and have an Instagram (mystic.rookies). While we don’t have a set date this group is going to be KILLER. I’m so excited for their debut!

6. RBW Girls

RBW Girls are, you guessed it, from RBW Entertainment, home of Mamamoo. While there isn’t a set date for their debut yet, it’s said that they should be debuting anywhere from July to September. We’ve been waiting for these girls to debut for a while. From left to right, the girls are: Sujin (maknae), Jieun (known from Produce 48), Seoyoung (former YG trainee), Goeun (known from Produce 48), Chaeyoung (she was on Star King at age 6, was on Kpop Star, and is a former YG trainee), Eunseong (known from MIXNINE), and Yuki (former JYP trainee, only Japanese member). To get to know more about them and their skills, I’d suggest you check out their YouTube 365 Practice! They post lots of covers as well as having some fun videos with the members. They also have an Instagram (365practice_official). These girls are all so talented and I can’t wait to finally get to see them debut!

7. Cignature

Cignature is a seven member girl group under C9 Entertainment that debuted on February 3rd. I have told you guys about Cignature so many times I’m sure you’re tired of it now, so if you want to know more about the girls, check out my Lesser-Known Girl Groups You Should Check Out list. I adore them and personally believe they’re in the running for the ROTY award so far this year.

We are also supposed to be getting new girl groups soon from WM Entertainment, HOW Entertainment, and SM Entertainment, but nothing official has been said yet so I’ll give an update when I have more information. Ks even in the army have been gaining a lot of attention from the Korean media. Any update to it is grounds for an article. Ks on this hiatus gained a lot of power in the film industry as well as in the music industry. ...the AKB48 Studio Recordings Collection—wherein each album cover is inspired by a particular team stage song (for example, A5’s “Renai Kinshi Jourei”, with Miichan on the tabloid-like cover... pun unintended tho uwu)...

...BNK48’s first album, “RIVER”, looks like a glass or marble sculpture coming from a high-end museum; tbh their single/album/stage cd cover jackets are well planned since Aitakatta, and aesthetically pleasing~ in MNL48’s case, the only good-looking cover amongst all their cd jacket covers is the initial High Tension cutout-ish cover jacket imo...

...and lastly, the Limited Edition CD cover jacket for Morning Musume ‘17’s 15th studio album, “(15) Thank you, too”, that’s paying homage to the group’s first studio album, “First Time”’s cover... because they had celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2017.

September News Round-Up

It’s round-up time! Below the read more is a compilation of some notable news stories that we haven’t previously posted about.

This month features a lot of changes in SKE48, a new Fairies sister group, a change to BANANALEMON’s line-up, and more.

AKB48

As part of an exchange program between AKB48 and JKT48, Kawamoto Saya has temporarily transferred to JKT48 while Stephanie Pricilla Indarto Putri has temporarily joined AKB48. [x] Additionally, member Takeuchi Miyu has announced her graduation from the group. On September 4th she announced her last handshake event for December 23rd 2018. She's been a long standing member having joined the group in 2009, and is known for the variety of instruments she can play. [X] As always, we wish her success in her future endeavors!

Ayumi Hamasaki

Ayumi has once again decided to 'quit' twitter. She made the decision back in 2015, leaving her account managed by her agents. She returned briefly, but then was under fire for her tweet about a new backup dancer. She has once again 'quit', leaving the account to be run by her agents. [X]

BANANALEMON

After their successful performance as a trio in South Korea early this month, BANANALEMON announced on the 9th that member R!NO had officially left the group. Both creative differences as well as well an unspecified injury led R!NO to making the decision to leave. That being said, R!NO still intends to be active as a dancer. The official statement in English, Japanese and Korean can be read HERE. It's sad to see her go, but we wish her nothing but success with future endeavors!

The group has annouced that they are renaming their unit as a sign to focus on overseas activities. They will now be moving forward as 'kolme' (same pronouciation as callme). The name is finish for '3' which is the number of members they have. Additionally, they will have a new full album released in 2019. [X]

Devil ANTHEM

Devil ANTHEM has added Akira to their lineup. Fans of recently disbanded PREDIANNA, will recognize her from that group. She will appear in a live performance on September 30th, and officially join the group October 13th! [X]

EX-Morning Musume member, Hitomi Yoshizawa

As a precursor for this article, I, Mod Rise do my best to cover idol news thoroughly each month. This means that I do my best not to gloss over 'bad' news, but to deliver it as clearly as possible. Due to the sensitivity of the topic gossip website articles will not be linked. Additionally, Japan has a zero tolerance policy in regards to drinking and driving. That is a major factor as to why this story has made major news circulation. In regards to this story, please note that Hitomi Yoshizawa is a FORMER member of Morning Musume, and does not reflect on the current group or current lineup.

Now, for the summary: On September 6th, Hitomi Yoshizawa struck two pedestrians while driving intoxicated at 7AM. She fled the scene, only to return 15 minutes later. Both pedestrians have suffered minor injuries due to being struck. She is currently charged with drunk driving, negligent driving, and for hit&run. On September 27th, her bail was posted, and she has been released from prison. Upon release she was transported to a hospital to have a speech impairmenttreated. During this time she, her family, her husband and her former mangagement company discussed her future, and effectively terminated her contract. She has decided to retire officially from the entertainment industry. Yoshizawa will face trial, and is expected to face further jail time. [X] [X] [X]

Harajuku Ekimae Stage Parties

Members of the trainee group of this stage have been promoted. The trainees that were already part of Harajuku Otome have ended their concurrent positions and moved solely to being Harajuku Otome members. The remaining trainees have formed the group ‘LiKE’. [x*]

Keyakizaka46

Member Yurina Hirate, during the September 5th concert for the group fell from the stage. She was immediately rushed to the hospital where she had no major injuries only bruising. She returned to the stage for the second encore, and the company has officially released a statement saying there are no extensive injuries to her person. [X]

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu

Kyary came under fire for a culture insensitive/culturally appropriative Native American costume. Promoting her new single 'Kizunami' she had braids, wearing a braided headband with feathers, paint under eyes, all of which have been called out by netizens. [X] She has since taken down the offending post. No formal comment from Kyary or her company has been issued at this time.

NGT48

Kado Yuria will be taking a hiatus from the group due to medical reasons. After seeing a specialist, it was determined that she should pause activities for at least a month in order to allow a waist injury to heal. [x]

Nogizaka46

First generation member Nishino Nanase has announced her graduation from the group. Her graduation concert is planned for 2019, but her activities with the group will finish by the end of the year. She plans to continue on in the entertainment industry after her graduation. [x]

SKE48

Matsui Jurina has returned from her hiatus, which lasted over 2 months. [x] However, she is not jumping right back in to full-time activities. She appears to slowly be re-introducing herself to the spotlight, presumably so she does not over-exert herself. [x.x] Meanwhile, Matsumura Kaori has announced her graduation. After 8 years with the group, she believes it is time to move on and allow some of the younger idols to take her spotlight. [x] In lighter news, 6 research students have been promoted to full members. Ishiguro Yuzuki, Otani Yuki, Nakano Airi, Fukai Negai, Nishi Marina, and Hirata Shiina are now official members. [x]

SUPER☆GiRLS

It was recently annouced that 5 of the 9 members of the group will be graduating. After Runa Ozawa, Mirei Tanaka, and Rika Shimura graduated earlier this year, another round of graduations is occuring. First generation members Hikaru Watanabe, Rina Miyazaki, and Ruka Mizote will be graduating leaving no original first generation members in the group. Two second generation members Nana Asakawa and Risa Uchimura will also be graduting as well. Their last live in this current lineup will be January 11th 2019. Currently, the group is auditioning new 4th generation members at this time. [X] We wish all the graduating members sucess in their future endevours!
