Ajit Pawar on fielding wife against cousin in Baramati polls

Underlining that politics shouldn't be allowed to enter homes, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has said he made a mistake by pitting his wife against his cousin Supriya Sule in the Baramati Lok Sabha polls.

In an interview with a Marathi news channel, Ajit Pawar, who is on a statewide 'Jan Samman Yatra', said the decision taken by the NCP parliamentary board was wrong.

"I love all my sisters. One shouldn't allow politics to enter homes. I made a mistake in fielding Sunetra against my sister. This shouldn't have happened. But the parliamentary board (of NCP) made a decision. Now I feel it was wrong," Ajit Pawar said.

In the Lok Sabha elections, Supriya Sule won for the fourth successive time from the Baramati seat by 1.5 lakh votes against Ajit Pawar's wife Sunetra. Sule is the daughter of NCP supremo Sharad Pawar. Sunetra Pawar was later elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Pawar, whose rebellion led to a split in the NCP, said Sharad Pawar was a senior leader and "head of their family" and he would not respond to any criticism made by his uncle.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray looked visibly pleased as Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar presented the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi government’s first budget on March 6. Four sectors that Thackeray has long supported — agriculture, urban development, transport and tourism — have all received significant consideration.

The state budget estimates total expenditure at Rs 1.15 lakh crore, of which close to 40 per cent — about Rs 42,588 crore — will be spent on social and community services. Another Rs 16,333 crore has been allocated to agriculture and allied services, while the transport department, overseen by the Shiv Sena’s Anil Parab, has got Rs 16,846 crore. This is almost Rs 800 crore more than the crucial water resources department, headed by the Nationalist Congress Party’s Jayant Patil. The government has also announced a 1 per cent stamp duty concession for two years in urban pockets, including the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Nagpur. This, it is hoped, will go some way in reviving sales in the real estate sector, which is overseen by the Sena’s Eknath Shinde.

Thackeray’s focus on social welfare is evident in two schemes — loan waiver to farmers (which gets Rs 22,000 crore; Rs 15,000 crore in 2019-20 and Rs 7,000 crore in 2020-21) and the Shiv Bhojan meal at Rs 10. The latter scheme, which has been allocated Rs 150 crore, has been an instant hit since its launch on January 26. The government has now doubled the daily number of plates served to 36,000 from 18,000 across 148 centres in the state and says it plans to increase that number to 100,000 per day. “The response to this scheme has been overwhelming,” says food and civil supplies minister Chhagan Bhujbal.

The opposition has derided the “freebie” culture inherent in power minister Nitin Raut’s plan to provide free electricity up to 100 units to domestic consumers. But he is determined to continue with the AAP government-inspired plan. A committee of three secretaries has been set up to chalk out a proposal.

In keeping with the Sena’s core bel­iefs, learning Marathi is now compulsory in all boards till Standard 10. “Syllabus evaluations will be our priority in the future,” says school education minister Varsha Gaikwad, from the Congress.

The environment has always been a big priority of the Thackerays, and the chief minister’s son and minister for environment and tourism, Aaditya Thackeray, has big plans. This includes a dedicated ‘Green Fund’, and promoting free ‘forest walks’ in areas other than wildlife reserves. “I am in talks with the forest department to make it a reality,” says Aaditya. His department will also get Rs 1,000 crore for a world-class aquarium to be constructed in Worli, his constituency. Mumbai also gets an annual Rs 100 crore for the development of tourism infrastructure.

Chief Minister Thackeray has reiterated that his government’s commitment is to make people’s lives comfortable. However, Devendra Fadnavis, leader of the opposition, says Thackeray is leading a “stay government” — a dig at Uddhav’s decision to put on hold some projects initiated in Fadnavis’s time.

Former chief minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said that Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar came to them “on his own” to join hands to form the government and that he had given them the impression that NCP chief Sharad Pawar was in the loop about the move. Fadnavis also said that the details about the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sharad Pawar were shared “conveniently” by the latter, but the remaining information about the same will be revealed at the appropriate time.In an interview to Marathi news channel Zee 24 Taas, Fadnavis said that Ajit Pawar told him that most NCP MLAs wanted to go with the BJP as their alliance with the Congress was not possible. “We did not try to poach MLAs or split any party for around a month after the results were announced until Ajit Pawar approached us. About a couple of days ahead of the swearing-in on November 23, Ajit Pawar came to us saying his entire party was ready to join hands with the BJP to form the government. He even made a few party MLAs to speak to me. He told us that Sharad Pawar was aware of the move. We knew it was a gamble, but a gamble is inevitable in politics, though it failed in this case,” he said.Fadnavis was sworn-in as the chief minister and Ajit Pawar the deputy chief minister on November 23, after the latter allegedly handed over a letter of support of 54 NCP MLAs to form the government. Both resigned within three days after they realised that the NCP MLAs were not with them as party president Sharad Pawar ensured that none of his legislators went with his nephew. He also compelled Ajit Pawar to return to the party. In a recent interview, Sharad Pawar had said that Narendra Modi gave an “offer” to his party to “work” with them, during their meeting on November 20, but he refused. “Whatever Pawar told the media was just a part of the conversation. He has hid half of the conservation between them. It would not be proper for me to disclose the details of the conversation between them, though I know it. However, it would be known to the public at the right time. I will speak about that at an appropriate time,” he said.The former chief minister also said that he was saddened that Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray did not take his calls and cut off the communication after the election results were announced, despite having shared a healthy relationship for the past five years.
