“Bless me,” Usopp begs. All of him is shaking. His voice, his hands, his shoulders and all down his spine. He is a wretched thing, curled and contorted like a sun-starved plant, made weak and small. “Bless me with courage, bless me with bravery — please, I can’t, I can’t —“
“Usopp—“
“Take my fear!” It’s a wild cry, all airless desperation. It’s the wailing of a worshiper with nothing to cling to but their faith. “Make me brave, fix me, I can’t keep being useless like this please, Luffy, please!”
“Usopp!” Luffy wrestles himself out of Usopp’s grip and drops to his knees and bundles his friend into his arms, the whole miserable package of him. Usopp doesn’t want to uncurl, but Luffy is stronger, and forces him upright enough to tuck his wet face into Luffy’s chest. Usopp burrows there, still crying, still begging. Luffy smooshes Usopp against him tighter until he starts to quiet down, rocks him back and forth a little like Makino used to do for him when he was still young.
“Usopp is dumb,” Luffy says into his hair. “I can’t give him something he already has.”
Usopp jolts, tries to wrench himself out of Luffy’s grip. It doesn’t really work, because Luffy just stretches with him, but Usopp still pulls back enough to look at him with his face all wet and flushed and awful-looking. “Don’t laugh at me!” It might have been a shout if his voice hadn’t cracked halfway through. Instead it just sounds like a sob. “Not you, I can’t — not you, Luffy. Don’t you brush me off, not you — you picked me. You chose me and I can do it, I can, I can get stronger, I can be better I just need help, please help me please…”
Luffy pulls him close again, because he doesn’t want to look at Usopps crying face and listen to him saying dumb things about himself that don’t even make any sense. “I picked you,” he echoes, because that’s true even if everything else was wrong. “I picked you.”
And then, like it’s being torn out of him, like it’s got barbs ripping him to ribbons on the way out, Usopp chokes “You picked wrong.”

Just a Rock
For all the time I’ve spent traveling through space, I haven’t spend much of it actually out in space. It’s unsettling. Inside the ship, I can forget how close the airless void is, how small our precious bubble of air. But outside, everything is black like some vast creature ate all the color in the universe first, then the air, and is now hungering for life forms too.
Sometimes those distant stars look like teeth.
These are the thoughts that tend to pop up when I’m in my exo suit, hoping that my thruster pack doesn’t run out of fuel before I make it back to the ship. But then an empty pack of chips will float by my visor, and I can refocus on business.
That’s how it happened today, at any rate. (And yes, “day” is a silly concept in the blackness of space.) We’d made a detour to see if we could pick up some extra funds by gathering salvage from a museum ship that had gone kablooey, but so far all we were finding was trash.
Paint jetted past in her own exo suit, upside-down to my frame of reference, then stopped to pull apart a jumble of carpet fragments. “They really did clear out the good stuff already,” she said over the radio. She swatted aside a drink cup with her tail, looking like a little space-suited dinosaur, a thought that kept me entertained for a good few seconds.
Captain Sunlight’s voice said, “Keep an eye out for scrap metal. That may already be gone too, but it’s worth a shot.” She was somewhere else in the drifting junk pile, or maybe back near the ship; I couldn’t tell. There was too much stuff in the way. This was a mildly alarming thought — out of sight meant out of safety — but I caught a glimpse of the Frillian twins posted as safety guards at the edge of the cloud, and my heartbeat settled a bit.
“Do you think anyone will buy some mildly used carpet?” Paint asked the captain. “It’s only in several pieces.”
“Let’s go with ‘no.’”
“What about some very exotic — what is this — napkins? Made with authentic Earth wood fibers!”
I looked over at that. “How can you tell?”
“Oh, I have no idea,” Paint said. She held up half of a wall placard. “But this is from the Earth exhibit, so maybe the napkins are too.”
I looked around at the trash in a new light. “Man, it’s a pity we weren’t here for any of the good stuff.”
“Yeah, and all these food packages are empty! We can’t even get you a slightly exploded taste of home!”
I waved my hand through a cluster of soda bottles. “I appreciate the thought.”
Paint jetted over to a different pile of whatever. “Hey, do you think any of this food trash was actually an exhibit? Packaging from olden days?”
“Uh, maybe,” I said. “Probably not. That’s not the sort of thing I’d expect on a multi-species museum ship. A janky little humans-only one, maybe. But even then, most people aren’t going to care.”
Something clunked against the back of my helmet. I hate that. Nothing like a reminder that I can’t see behind me like some species can. I toggled the jets to rotate in place, so I could find the offending object.
It was a rock.
“What’s this doing here?” I asked, closing a gloved hand around it and bringing it in for a closer look.
“What’d you find?” Paint asked, sticking out sideways from behind a twisted bench.
“A rock.”
“A meteorite rock?” she asked. “Oh hey, do you think it pierced the hull?”
“No, it doesn’t look like a space rock,” I said, turning the small gray-and-white lump over. It was mostly smooth, with a divot that would have fit a fingertip if I hadn’t been wearing the gloves. “Weird. I wonder if it was part of some Neolithic exhibit or something.”
“Can I see?” Paint jetted over to park herself in roughly the same orientation as me. She was very good with that jetpack.
I showed her the rock. “It doesn’t look like any gemstone I know. Maybe some kid had it in their pocket, then threw it away.”
Paint cocked her head. “Is that normal, for your young to carry rocks around?”
“Sure. You never picked up something you thought was neat as a kid?”
“Not a rock,” Paint said with exaggerated disdain. “A sweet-smelling seednut or herb, absolutely.”
“But look: it’s even got a little finger groove,” I pointed out. “You could stick it in a pocket and rub it for luck.”
“Could you?”
I smiled. “You could. You probably wouldn’t, but…”
“Why?”
I looked at the rock again, already fond of it. “I get the feeling that I couldn’t explain this to a point where you’d agree.”
Paint shrugged. “Probably not. But hey, we found you a souvenir after all. From probably the Earth section of whatever museum this is.” She grabbed a handful of colorful pamphlets drifting by. “The ‘Galaxy in a Bottle Museum Tour Ship.’ Who named that?”
My smile turned into a wide grin. “Humans.”
Paint grumbled about the unflattering comparison of an elite starship to a simple bottle. When she moved to toss the pamphlets away, I held out a hand.
“What’s that white one?” I asked. “It looks like a display sign.”
Paint flipped over the stack and separated the one I meant. “You’re right. Hey, it’s about a rock!”
I reached out a grabby hand. “Gimme.”
She passed it over. “Is it that rock?”
I read the title, then was gut-punched by familiarity. I’d heard about this. “Yes,” I managed, skimming the rest of the sign and holding the rock close. “This is Bethan’s Rock.”
“What?”
I fumbled to explain. “Ages ago, a kid visited a museum — a human kid — and learned what museums were for, then offered her favorite rock as a donation, so other people could appreciate it too.”
Paint cocked her head in the other direction. “And they took it?”
“Yes!” I must have looked a little wild at this point, but I didn’t care. “The adults agreed that it was a fine thing to donate, not to mention adorable, and the only one of its kind that I’ve ever heard of. More museums should house the occasional favorite rock, though I suppose they wouldn’t be as special if they did.”
“So just to clarify,” Paint said. “There isn’t anything valuable about this rock, except that one of your youths decided there was. And all the adults played along.”
I smiled down at it, careful not to let it drift away. “It’s the most precious non-precious stone I’ve ever seen.”
Paint stared for a moment. “It’s not even one of those shiny ones you like.”
I laughed. “I know!”
The captain called us back in at that point, having found one decent chunk of metal among the mountains of trash. We had a schedule to keep.
I folded the sign and tucked it into my suit pocket, but held the rock tight in my fist as I jetted toward the ship, working the controls with one hand. I was already thinking of the safest place in my quarters to keep it until we got ahold of the proper Earth museum authorities. Other humans would want to see Bethan’s Rock, after all, but it would be my honor to watch over it until they could.

Death is silent. No. Death is cruel. is sadistic. is merciless. is callous. is harsh. is atrocious. is ruthless. is evil. is bitter. is brutal. is uncaring. is wicked. is unkind. No, that's wrong too. Death is the fairest force of nature we got.
Death doesn't discriminate. We all face those boney fingers eventually. Not one human being has proven immortality yet And it'll be a cold day in Hell when we figure that out. With the world on it's collapse, who would want to be immortal? Death knows this, and when it comes, it's best just to take it's hand, and hold tight. The reaper is just the delivery man, your Amazon package has arrived And you can't even remember what it was that you ordered but it's a nice way to liven up a Thursday afternoon.
Death is violent. Violent like a child throwing a tantrum in a Wal-Mart candy aisle Like a bar fight ending in cuffs and broken noses. Like a drunk coming home to beat his dog senseless, secretly wishing the dog would just snap. Suicide is too scary. Let the dog do the dirty work. In comfortable hospital rooms, high on morphine and fentanyl, the violence lingers in the air The same hospital smell of shit, vomit, and cleaning chemicals. Everything has to be sterile for the dying. Make sure his hands are restrained so he can't pull the tube out. He can't speak. He can't speak but he tries, and I never learned how to read lips.
The room is quiet, except for the machine that breathes for him. A constant lung substitutes. A constant beeping pulse. A TV plays an unwatched and forgotten show. What's the point of caring when your never even awake for more than ten minutes at a time. Sweet sleep is the transition into death, and we practice for the big show every single time we close our eyes.
Death is violent. It's violent to the dead, but it's even worse of an abuser to the living. Curled fists, thrown dishes, stab wounds and bullet holes. Death is worse for those still breathing. Grief. Grief is an often-forgotten emotion, only being a little less of a surprise than a prepared for death still happening. The living watch the living transition to empty vessels surrounded by loved ones, at least for a few moments. An hour or two, to say goodbyes. Death hooks your lungs as you try to speak those last words, the last words you'll ever say to your father. I love you, pop. Were they good enough. Death is anxiety. Death is uncertain. Death is questioning. Death is violence.
Death is instant. One minute a word, the next airless lungs. Eyes for second see everything in the room, to fading residuals of light tracers. And we watch. We watch everything deflate one last time.
Death is silent. There is a stillness to the air of the dying. It seems to freeze the very essence of the room. A hospital room. Nobody wants to die in a hospital room. In the never ending beeps that disappear, both in the dying ears, and in the living who now hear nothing in the room but a very high pitched sound. Needles straight to the brain.
Death is violence. Tears break in salt water streams. Sobs stab at the lungs. And a curious pressure squeezes your heart, and the very vessels that your blood is flowing in. Your blood stops. Everything stops. What are you supposed to do after death? What are you supposed to do with the things we leave behind?
The things that get left behind. How do you go through those possessions and divvy them up between loved ones? The things we leave behind seem to hit the hardest. That's death's final shot on the living. The memories that appear out of seemingly no where A song on the radio, now bittersweet instead of sugar A film laughing, and suddenly tears as you hear the laugh of the past A book once read, but now sits unfinished with dog ear pages I still dog ear my books like crazy. A habit I never broke from you. A certain meal, a certain smell, a familiar taste, a familiar room It's amazing the places that ghosts like to appear in And they say hello, in death's final shots just to remind you for one second that death is violent
A life-time gone in a matter of seconds and I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to do with this information. Just store it away and let it build into yet another repressed mental illness because I don't know what to do. I don't know what to think. I don't even know how I'm really supposed to feel at this point.
Death is violent. So fucking violent.

2. Where do you get your fic ideas?
it really just depends! sometimes its a "wouldnt it be fucked up if-" and sometimes its a mix of tropes/plot concepts i picked up in other fandoms/stories subconsciously because i can BLORBO-IFY EVERYTHING IF I TRY HARD ENOUGH and its fun to put a twist on kind of tropey ideas for my own amusement.
i dont really get my ideas from music specifically (although i know a lot of other people do), but i end up looking for music to listen to that applies to the fics that i write for an extra boost of motivation and it usually helps me expand on ideas (currently 47k words into caged lungs and right now its been goodbye my danish sweetheart. for coming undone it was gilded lily. my fics always got The Song...)
55. Have you noticed any patterns in your fics?  Words/expressions that appear a lot, themes, common settings, etc?
i mean i am currently on my SECOND slow build (this one even more so) angst fic about a curse, so at the moment that is kind of my Thing.... also i LOVE just writing like. guilt. guilt appears in everything that i write, also usually themes of internalized ableism and self sacrifice? the general angst package
also i notice that i think for like almost every fic i write or have planned, i write leo going apeshit to some extent. he's a very fun character to make irrationally angry and protective. nobody appreciated the mental image of him clotheslining draxum in coming undone which is sad because i find it VERY FUNNY...... like he had to jump to do that LMAO
58. Do you have a favorite piece of figurative language you’ve written?
GOD I CANNOT PICK ONE. here's some of my favorites from caged lungs currently because there's a TON of it there. spoiler-ish its mostly canary metaphor stuff
For his whole life he’d felt caged by his purpose, like a trapped bird yearning for the open sky. But for a bird, freedom was more dangerous than staying locked away— it lived longer behind bars, fulfilling its purpose for others instead of itself. It could sing songs of yearning all it wanted, aware that the goal was unreachable. Dangerous. Impossible. (It was better to be locked away, in the end. A caged bird still sang. A dead one didn’t.)
For his family, he had buried himself alive. A dead man rotting beneath the soil, singing songs of sunlight he never wanted to see. Loving had clipped his wings. Golden feathers had strewn across the pristine metal floor. He crushed them beneath his feet as he walked. He refused to look at them. These were the sacrifices he made for love. His lungs burned.
It was four-fourteen. His breathing was gunshot loud in the still air. His heart ticked like clockwork. His lungs burned. The remnants of his work were chopped into tiny pieces on his metal floor. He couldn’t remember what it felt like to clip them. Painful, he assumed. It didn’t feel like anything now.
(The moment he’d fallen out of that closet, the birdcage had been opened wide. He’d been sent into the darkness of the underground instead of the limitless, open sky. Into a dead end. Into his crypt. His voice had been taken from him, lost to the airless shadows. He hadn’t realized until then that he’d been doomed to die from the very beginning.)
 Every echo of feather-light softness felt like it filtered through a haze of shame. All of this was to keep them happy. He was never going to be happy again— he could touch the moon in a puddle, but he could never pull the stars out of the sky.
His forehead met the lip of the sink with a dull thunk. He wrapped his arms around his stomach and cried into the dark, mocked by the uncontaminated atmosphere of the bathroom. He’d built it this way with his own hands, sterile and pristine, it was his fault— sitting on a throne of white lies, soaking in porcelain smiles and hollow appreciation so he wouldn’t have to face the truth.  In the distance he heard the tick of a clock, the threat of an alarm, rotting his flesh away. Donnie was running out of time.
AND A COUPLE FROM MINER'S EULOGY which is the thing after this... so many god damn metaphors in these fics im having a great time!!
Never before had he witnessed his brother be crushed so thoroughly. Leo had soothed the cracks in his resolve and glued the chipped pieces back before, scars and grooves that told stories of labors of love—but he’d never had to cradle the dust in his hands in the way that he had that night, unable to remember the shape that they had once formed. He’d never felt so in over his head. He’d never thought he would be the cause of it.
Leo had turned back, and Donnie was gone. He’d surfaced into the light, alone, and he would never be able to stand in the sunshine without feeling like he’d stolen it. Every breath he took was air he had ripped out of Donnie’s lungs. Soon, Donnie would wake and Leo would have to meet his eyes every single day. He’d never see him again.
Leo wanted to give him the night sky and he’d blown the chance to give him so much as a speck of stardust.
this is all really vague stuff so im cool sharing it but. behold: the curse of being. a character that i like . in a series (also like behold what i meant when i mentioned the orpheus/eurydice parallel. A HAPPY ACCIDENT)
