There was a certain type of guilt that accumulated when you know you’re the reason your boyfriend was shipped off to join the airforce.
Steve got consumed by it pretty quick.
They got caught. Steve really didn’t think he was that loud during sex and usually that would be true. Except apparently he was that loud while bottoming.
Neil hit the roof and Billy was gone like that.
He came back a year later. After Neil ran off to Alabama or Texas or Florida. Somewhere in the south.
Billy’s mullet had gone. In its place, there was a slightly grown out crew cut, hair already making an attempt to curl despite the lack of length. He’d gotten six new tattoos, including one in a language Steve didn’t understand. Probably Irish.
He’d left the Air Force the moment Neil disappeared. Apparently it had been a lot of standing around or sitting in aircraft carriers. Dishonourable discharge because Billy had shown great aptitude for flying but a complete disregard of authority.
Plus, Steve had never met anyone who was more vehemently anti military in his life.
They tried to pick up where they left off. Billy insisted that he was fine, he’d seen absolutely no combat and he’d gotten on with his bunkmates.
It wasn’t exactly Billy who was the problem.
Steve was paranoid. It was like somehow the ever present fear of Neil Hargrove had passed on from Billy to him.
Every time they were alone, Steve was convinced that someone was going to barge in and split them up. Taking Billy away from him again.
It was starting to put an actual strain on their relationship.
The worries were finally addressed in Walmart. The best place to resolve all problems.
Billy asked if Steve wanted to break up. Steve managed to stammer through “what the fuck no” before Billy demanded to know what Steve’s deal was then.
There was a beat of silence.
“Neil”
Billy’s face darkened in understanding.
They couldn’t hold hands in public but Billy’s arm moved a fraction closer to his.
It was all the confirmation Steve needed.
Things didn’t go back to normal after that. They didn’t live in a fairytale. But Steve finally let himself breathe. And slowly he let the guilt go.

Foxx Nolte's "Hidden History of Walt Disney World"
NEXT SATURDAY (July 20), I'm appearing in CHICAGO at Exile in Bookville.
No one writes about Disney theme parks like Foxx Nolte; no one rises above the trivia and goes beyond the mere sleuthing of historical facts, no one nails the essence of what makes these parks work – and fail.
I first encountered Nolte through her blog, Passport to Dreams Old and New, where her writing transformed the way I viewed the project of these giant, elaborate built environments. It was through articles like this one – about the sightlines from bathrooms! – that I came to truly understand what design criticism means:
https://passport2dreams.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-awkward-transitions-of-disneyland.html
While her work on queue design transformed how I thought about waiting, scarce-goods allocation, and the psychology of anticipation and desire:
https://passport2dreams.blogspot.com/2010/12/third-queue.html
But I really knew her for a kindred spirit when I read her masterful analysis of the historical context and enduring power of the Haunted Mansion:
https://passport2dreams.blogspot.com/2010/05/history-and-haunted-mansion.html
A decade after that Haunted Mansion post, Nolte published the definitive history of the Haunted Mansions, Boundless Realm, the very best book ever written on the subject:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/11/09/boundless-realm/#fuxxfur
This year, Nolte came back with another short, smart, endlessly fascinating history of Disney World, Hidden History of Walt Disney World:
https://www.arcadiapublishing.com/products/9781467156189
There are many histories of Walt Disney World, but none are quite like this. Nolte – who worked at the park for many years – combines her insider's view with her deep historical knowledge and yields up a "hidden history" that will forever change how I look at the built environment and the natural landscape it sits atop.
The path to Walt Disney World – an entertainment juggernaut that occupies a landmass twice the size of Manhattan – was anything but smooth. Its original design – Walt's design – barely survived groundbreaking, dying with Walt himself. Walt's successor, his brother Roy, used the occasion of Walt's death to assert his long-contested dominance over the park, drastically scaling back Walt's ambition for a bizarre residential/utopian community and replacing it with a kind of deluxe Disneyland with the idea of limiting the company's financial risk by re-creating a pre-existing, sure thing money-maker.
But Roy died within a few years of Walt, and the company transitioned from a family business to a managerial one, its direction set by executives who weren't named "Disney." These managers were just as flawed as the Disney brothers, but in much different ways (one long-serving CEO insisted that Disney should stay out of the hotel business, leaving billions on the table for contractors and third parties.
Of course, all of this is happening in Florida, and many of Nolte's funniest, juciest stories play Walt, then Roy, then various CEOs and execs off of flamboyant locals straight out of a Carl Hiaasen novel. In Nolte's capable hands, the many acres of Disney property come alive with the ghosts of Florida eccentrics and conmen who play against the deeply weird Disney brothers and their baffled corporate successors.
The history of Walt Disney World is also a history of the American narrative from the 1960s to the turn of the millennium, especially once Epcot enters the picture and Disney sets out to market itself as a futuristic mirror to America and the world. There's a doomed plan to lead the nation in the provision of an airport for the largely hypothetical short runway aircraft that never materialized, the Disney company's love-hate affair with Florida's orange growers, and the geopolitics of installing a permanent World's Fair, just as World's Fairs were disappearing from the world stage.
With Disney in disarray, corporate raiders smelled blood, and the company found itself on the brink of leveraged buyout hell, triggering another change in corporate leadership with the arrival of Michael Eisner. Nolte's portrait of Eisner is far more nuanced than the presentation in rival histories, surfacing his many forgotten gaffes – but also giving him credit where it was due. When the dust settles on the Eisner era, Disney has more theme parks in one place than can possibly be justified – in an America where workers get almost no paid vacation days, building more theme parks does not extend visitors' stays. It only adds to the expense of keeping those guests entertained during those brief, flitting visits.
The Disney empire is rooted in contradictions. The Disney brothers cordially loathed one another and the company split into "Walt people" and "Roy people" who schemed against one another in secret and sometimes even erupted into open conflict. There's something Hegelian about the Walt/Roy split: Walt went bust trying to run a creative empire that ignored the financials, and fled the ashes of his first venture to work with Roy in California. Roy disciplined Walt with financial rigor, often to excess. When the company emerged from WWII with its outside shareholders in charge, Roy became their champion and Walt's tormentor, with the ability to exercise a firm veto when he couldn't win the day through moral suasion.
Walt sought escape from his brother, proposing a series of ill-starred ventures that eventually became Disneyland. First, he proposed that he would transform his backyard ride 'em train-set into a public attraction that he would personally oversee, so that he wouldn't have to go to the office and let his brother boss him around. Then he proposed buying a locomotive and fitting out a train of railcars with exhibits promoting Disney movies, which he, personally, would drive around America, far from his brother.
Finally, he hit on Disneyland, poaching the company's best animators for a separate firm that Roy was eventually forced to buy from Walt in order to bring it back into the corporate fold. These power struggles, in which Roy first took orders from Walt, before turning the tables, only to have them turned again, culminated in the uneasy detente that characterized the era from Disneyland's opening to Walt's death.
Working with his brother may have made Walt miserable, but he evidently saw the benefit in this Hegelian dialectic, because he became infamous for putting together creative teams who were forever at each other's throats. The storied Sherman Brothers – Disney's star songwriting team – barely tolerated each other. The titans of early Imagineering were often at odds, and Walt took seemingly sadistic glee in forcing artists who disliked one another to work on joint projects.
In focusing on the conflicts between different corporate managers, outside suppliers, and the gloriously flamboyant weirdos of Florida, Nolte's history of Disney World transcends amusing anaecdotes and tittle-tattle – rather, it illustrates how the creative sparks thrown off by people smashing into each other sometimes created towering blazes of glory that burn to this day.

Sacred New Beginnings- Chapter 8
A/N- thank you guys so much for being patient with me, I know that cliffhanger shook everyone up but I promise your patience will be rewarded!
Pairing- Jake Seresin x Reader (OC Stormy)
Warnings- injuries, cursing, smut
Song inspo- “Like I’m gonna lose you” - Meghan Trainor
It had been nearly 6 weeks since your accident, ejecting over the ocean in an aircraft during a dogfight which resulted in your shoot not properly deploying, sending you spiraling towards the ocean at a speed that thankfully didn’t kill you or your pilot. The emergency team that life flighted you to Maryland had to sedate you heavily to manage your pain, so excruciating that it required what the doctor had called a medically induced coma. Broken collarbone, broken left wrist, fractured femur and a gnarly concussion that had you out for several days, waking up alive certainly not what you were expecting; the first thing that caught your eyes was the golden blonde hair and green eyes of the man you loved. Jake had been there through it all, every sleepless night, surgery, pt until you were finally released to go back to your home in Pensacola. You knew your godfather had facilitated some sort of miracle to allow Jake so much time away from his job and for that you couldn’t be more grateful, Uncle Beau couldn’t be your support team so he made sure you had everything you needed.
You were exhausted, the plane ride had been painful and as much as you’d tried to put on a brave face Jake could tell you were suffering, he got you inside and settled in bed and refused to let you do anything other than rest, you knew he had to be running on fumes but if he was he didn’t show it. You weren’t wrong, he was wrung out both emotionally and physically but if he stopped pushing forward he knew he’d break down, there had been nights when you were sedated that he worried you wouldn’t get through it and having to face life alone without you was too much for his heart to bear. Now that he had you home and safe he couldn’t imagine going back to North Island, let alone watching you get back into your jet, the thought sent a shudder through him; losing you was never something he’d imagined before all of this but now it consumed his every waking moment. It wasn’t healthy, and he was a bad liar so he knew you could tell he was fraying at the edges, your doctor had suggested that it would be beneficial for you both to do therapy together or separate and he was sure that was an option that needed to be explored. He started a load of laundry and as the clothes swirled in the washer he scrolled through his phone to find admiral Simpsons number, maybe requesting a transfer could give him the peace he needed to sleep at night.
A week goes by, pt is going well, your godfather has extended Jake’s leave once again but his request for transfer was denied (which you expected and told him at least 1,000 times you didn’t need him to move across the country to babysit you), but you could tell his nerves were shot. when you woke up most nights he wasn’t in the bed, usually in the living room reading or watching tv, sometimes on a run that would last for hours. Therapy hadn’t been easy the first session, you’d rehashed the drama of your crash and had ended it in tears, you’d been assured it would get easier but it felt like it never would, especially with the walls it felt like Jake was building around you. He treated you like glass and it was becoming more and more frustrating, he didn’t want to talk about what was going on in his head, he definitely wouldn’t sleep with you and all you’d gotten were a handful of kisses and hand holding since you’d come back to Florida. It felt like he was pushing you away and that was what you knew would push you over the edge, injuries you could heal from but losing him? That would destroy you.
Jake of course is clueless to your fears, he is just pushing through each day trying to make sure you are healthy and getting better, the thought hasn’t even occurred to him that he’s been distant, how could he be? He’s with you all the time! But when he gets back from his nearly 10 mile run the tension he hadn’t noticed is palpable, you’ve somehow showered and changed without him and when he catches your eyes from your spot on the couch he knows you are ready for a fight. He’s seen that look over a dozen times but never aimed at him, the storm is raging in your features, jaw clenched and eyes red rimmed with tears; you’ve been crying and somehow it’s his fault.
“Baby what’s wrong? Are you hurt? Why didn’t you wait for me? You shouldn’t be doing anything by yourself-“ he started but you waved your hand dismissively and continued to scowl and tear up, he didn’t know what was going on but whatever he’d done he would get on his knees and beg for forgiveness if he had to. “I’m not hurt, I managed to take my brace off to shower and put it back on by myself, that’s not the problem. The problem is us.” You said the last part in almost a whisper as you burst into tears, you’d never been much for crying when you were upset but everything had gotten so overwhelming and you couldn’t get your thoughts together, Jake surged forward to scoop you up and it didn’t matter that he was sweaty and gross you needed his touch more than you could say. You clawed at his skin and gasped out as you tried to stall your tears, pulling at his face to kiss you and he reciprocated but continued to hold you as gently as possible, afraid to jostle you too much and hurt your leg. Your eyes looked wild as he pulled you back a little to calm you down, but you kept clinging to him and trying to pull him closer, he didn’t want to stop but the fear of hurting you was prevalent so he pulled back completely and stood up, only to be met with another round of tears. “Hey hey, you gotta talk to me sugar I don’t understand what’s going on? You’re scaring me baby, just tell me what it is and I’ll fix it ok?” You looked at him and huffed like a petulant child and he almost laughed but knew it would only make it worse, something was eating you up and he didn’t have a clue where to start. “I don’t understand how you don’t get it, you’re doing it to me right now! You’re pushing me away, I’m not made of glass Jake! You’ve barely touched me since we got home, it’s like you don’t even want me anymore and I can’t stand it!” You wailed out and he had never felt more idiotic in his life. He had been so focused on your recovery that it had never even occurred to him that you would want him like that right now, but of course you did; you needed him physically just like he always had when things were hard and somehow he’d completely missed it. You were still sniffling as he ran his hand over his face and chuckled, which made you scrunch your face up angrily at him because how was this funny? He had been acting like an ass, of course he’d done everything to be your caretaker but damnit you wanted your boyfriend.
“Oh sweet thing I’m so sorry, I really have been stupid huh?” He said as he stepped back into your space and wiped your tears with his thumbs. “I didn’t realize, baby, can I fix it? Take you to bed and show you how sorry I am?” You nodded furiously and put your hands out for him to scoop you up, letting him carry you down the hall to the bedroom as you kissed his face and neck, running your hands through his sweaty hair and down his shoulders. He still treats you like your fragile, but it’s in the form of soft touches and gentle kisses placed all over your body as he removes your clothes, there’s a reverence in the way he loves you, you’d missed the intimacy of being with him so much it hurt, and now that he knew what you needed you knew he’d give you everything. He could tell you were irritated by the leg brace, couldn’t quite get close to him the way you wanted, you were terrible at hiding it with your furrowed brows and frustrated huffs as you tried to gain leverage and push up against him. He stilled you with a hand on your hips and kissed you sweetly on the forehead trying to smooth away the irritation. “You’re so stubborn, lay still and be a good girl ok baby girl I’m gonna get you there I promise, be sweet for me like I know you can.” You huffed out again but did what he asked, watching as he kissed down your torso and hitched your good leg over his shoulder, you were already so wet and gasping for him but he was going to draw this out as long as possible, you said you needed him to touch you so he would until you couldn’t take it anymore.
He was so damn lucky, and he knew it. He could’ve lost you, missed out on moments like this, watching you come undone for him as he tasted you over and over again until you were a crying mess, taking you to the precipice as you writhed and begged for him to let you cum, but he wouldn't let you just yet, white knuckling the sheets and sobbing his name, pussy leaking all over his hands and mouth as your beautiful eyes rolled back, it was heaven on earth being with you like this and he’d never take it for granted. You were positive that you’d come out of your own skin if he didn’t let you come soon, pulling at his hair and pleading him with wasn’t working, and soon you were too far gone to even do that, just letting little noises out as you rolled your head back and forth and gasped his name, and finally he pulled away from you, climbing back up your body to sloppily lick into your mouth, he was covered in you and it was sinful, you couldn’t stop bucking into him and squirming and he just chuckled as he groped your chest and kissed your neck. “Jake- I get it ok, I was being a brat just- just please please fuck me, need it oh fuck please please” you couldn’t stop babbling even as he began to glide his cock through your slick, and he slid into you with no resistance, your body so wound up that you couldn’t stop, immediately clamping down on him and succumbing to your orgasm. He growled into your neck at how good you were, continuing to fuck you through it as you gushed all over him and onto the sheets, he’d been so turned on by edging you that he was hopeless to hold back his own orgasm, thrusting into you hard a few times and spilling into you, both of you sweat slicked and sated, finally feeling like maybe you’d made it through the worst of this season of life.
You’d fallen asleep shortly after, going in and out as he cleaned you up and tucked you in, promises to come back after he started the laundry. You knew it hadn’t been long because the sun was still out but when you woke his side of the bed was still made and cold, so you hobbled down the hall until you could hear him talking to someone on the phone. “I know Mama, she’s gonna be alright but I don’t know how to leave her, I’m scared to death to let her out of my sight let alone in her jet again. Yeah, they’re sending me back next week, I’m gonna do everything I can to make things easier but- I don’t know mama I can ask if she wants the company, she’s got an extra room but I don’t want to overwhelm her, I just want to keep her safe.” You could hear the rawness in his voice, and your heart broke, you weren’t ready to be without him either but he had to go back, you’d already been given too many favors and the navy wasn’t likely to give anymore. “Jake” you called to him and he fumbled with the phone and swiped his eyes, looking up at you with the saddest smile you’d ever seen. “Tell your mama I’d love to have her here, you’re right I could use the company and we are definitely overdue for the girl time.” There it was, his thousand watt smile you fell in love with, he crossed the room to scoop you in his arms and you could see the relief on his face. You swiped the phone from his hand and laughed, “Hey Mama Leigh, how about we order you that plane ticket? We’ve got all sorts of catching up to do, and you can fill me in on all Jake’s most embarrassing stories.”
Leigh Seresin was the very picture of a southern grandma, styled blonde hair and perfect makeup, but none of the catty attitude, just warmth and kindness. When you and Jake picked her up from the airport she pulled you both up into a hug, fussing at you for not using your crutches and producing a big container of homemade chocolate chip cookies. She reminded you so much of your grandmother in so many ways, she wasn’t pushy but she wouldn’t let you lift a finger, making sure you were settled and then ushering Jake into the kitchen to help her make dinner as you dozed on the couch. She knew you were the one for her son, could see it on his face months ago when he’d admitted that you two were together, she wasn’t surprised one bit, she’d known for years that he had a thing for you and eventually you two would figure it out. Checking to make sure you were still asleep she dug through her never ending coach bag (Jake always called her Mary poppins because she seemed to have everything) and produced a small velvet box. “You said you wanted me to give this to you when you were ready, and I know right now may not be the right time but son one day it will be. She’s the right one sweetheart, I can feel it in my bones.” There inside the little green box was the thing he’d dreamed about putting on your finger from that very first weekend, Grandma Seresin’s vintage engagement ring. He knew he’d have to wait a little while, let you heal up all the way and see where your career took you but holding it in his hand and watching you sleep on the couch he couldn’t help but feel like everything was falling into place.

Ten Russian aircraft entered Alaska's ADIZ on three occasions this week
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 02/10/2024 - 21:28in Interceptions, Military
In three days this week, a total of 10 Russian aircraft entered Alaska's air defense identification zone, the last time on February 9. In all of them, NORAD jets were sent for interception.
The military aircraft were tracked operating in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), but remained in international airspace and did not enter the American or Canadian sovereign airspace, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said in a statement on the respective days.
— North American Aerospace Defense Command (@NORADCommand) February 9, 2024
Two Russian planes entered Alaska's ADIZ on Thursday (08/02), the second time in the week that such an incident occurred.
— North American Aerospace Defense Command (@NORADCommand) February 9, 2024
The flights were observed after four Russian aircraft also entered the ADIZ on Tuesday (06/02), generating a similar statement from NORAD.
— North American Aerospace Defense Command (@NORADCommand) February 7, 2024
NORAD did not report which Russian aircraft entered the ADIZ in the three incidents.
This comes after Moscow suggested that it had a claim of sovereignty over Alaska, which the U.S. rejected. Alaska was bought by the US in 1867 from Russia and became a U.S. state in 1959.
An ADIZ begins where sovereign airspace ends and is defined as a stretch of international airspace in which the identification of aircraft in the interest of national security is necessary.
Map showing the ADIZ of Alaska.
“This Russian activity in Alaska's ADIZ occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat,” NORAD said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree at the end of January that allocates funding for the search, registration and legal protection of Russian properties abroad - which included properties in its former territories such as the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union.
Although the think tank Institute for the Study of War, based in Washington, D.C., has noted that "the exact parameters of what constitutes current or historical Russian property are not clear," the mission of the new property management agency could include Alaska, vast areas of Eastern and Central Europe — including in countries that are now NATO allies — as well as in parts of Central Asia and Scandinavia.
After the U.S. State Department rejected the allegations that the sale of Alaska had been illegitimate, Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and supporter of Putin, said: "Now war is inevitable."
In July last year, four Russian military aircraft were detected by NORAD in Alaska's ADIZ.
Prior to that, on May 15, the U.S. was forced to send fighters to intercept a Russian military aircraft after it entered the Alaskan ADIZ during a large-scale American military training exercise in the region.
Days earlier, on May 11, the U.S. intercepted six Russian military jets, again during American training exercises. The Pentagon Press Secretary, Brig. General Patrick S. Ryder said at the time: "This is not the first time of the Russians. It probably won't be the last."

Missing link found in gamma emission phenomena from thunderclouds
Groundbreaking Discoveries in Gamma-Ray Emissions from Thunderstorms
In the recent edition of Nature, groundbreaking results about the gamma-ray emissions produced during thunderstorms are presented. Overall, these findings reveal that gamma-ray emission from thunderclouds is much more complex, diverse, and dynamic than previously thought. Understanding these phenomena is crucial to uncovering the secrets of lightning.
Flickering Gamma-Ray Flashes: A New Discovery
Entitled “Flickering Gamma-Ray Flashes, the Missing Link between Gamma Glows and TGFs,” the paper by Østgaard et al. [2024] reports unique observations of a new phenomenon called Flickering Gamma-Ray Flashes (FGFs).
During thunderclouds, two different hard radiation phenomena have so far been known to originate: Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) and gamma-ray glows. This third phenomenon, observed and named FGFs by Østgaard et al. [2024] resembles the other two, while at the same time revealing certain characteristics separating FGFs from the others. Most noteworthy may be that FGFs are pulses of gamma-rays not associated with any detectable optical or radio signals.
The Missing Link Found?
«We think that FGFs could be the missing link between TGFs and gamma-ray glows, whose absence has been puzzling the atmospheric electricity community for two decades», says lead author and Professor Nikolai Østgaard at the University of Bergen.
Dynamic Gamma-Ray Emissions in Tropical Thunderclouds
In another study presented in this edition of Nature, Marisaldi et al. [2024] focus on the phenomenon referenced above and known as gamma-ray glows. The paper, entitled «Highly dynamic gamma-ray emissions are common in tropical thunderclouds», shows that contrary to what has been believed until now, tropical thunderclouds over ocean and coastal regions commonly emit gamma rays for hours over areas up to a few thousand square kilometers.
A New Understanding of Gamma-Ray Glows
«The dynamics of gamma-glowing thunderclouds starkly contradicts the former quasi-stationary picture of glows, and resembles that of a huge gamma-glowing boiling pot both in pattern and behavior», says Professor Martino Marisaldi at the University of Bergen.
The ALOFT Campaign
The groundbreaking results presented by Østgaard et al. [2024] and Marisaldi et al. [2024] are based on observations from the ALOFT (Airborne Lightning Observatory for FEGS and TGFs) campaign.
ALOFT, a collaboration between NASA and the University of Bergen, involved flying the NASA ER-2 aircraft from the MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, over tropical thunderstorms around the Gulf of Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean in the summer of 2023. The payload included lightning detectors, gamma-ray scintillators, and a mix of passive and/ or active microwave sensors. A total of 10 flights were conducted above thunderclouds around Mexico, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Florida.
The ALOFT campaign was financed by the Research Council of Norway and led by Professor Nikolai Østgaard and Professor Martino Marisaldi from the University of Bergen, Timothy Lang (Marshall Space Flight Center, NASA), and Franzeska Becker (ER-2 Mission Management).
The instrumentation on Board ER-2 during the ALOFT campaign included:
Gamma-ray detectors UIB-BGO (PI: Nikolai Østgaard, UiB) and iStorm (PI: Eric Grove, NRL)
An optical instrument named FEGS (PI: Mason Quick, Marshall Space Flight Center, NASA)
Two electric field sensors known as EFCM (PI: Hugh Christian, University of Alabama, Huntsville) and LIP (PI: Christopher Schultz, Marshall Space Flight Center, NASA)
Four cloud characterization instruments: AMPR (PI: Timothy Lang, Marshall Flight Center, NASA), CRS and EXRAD (PI: Gerry Heymsfield, Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA), and CoSSIR (PI: Rachael Kroodsma, Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA)
The flight campaign was coordinated with ground-based radio observations managed by a large network of collaborators.

10 Fascinating Facts About Aviation You Didn't Know
Aviation has always been a field filled with wonder and discovery. From the early days of flight to the advanced technology we see today, aviation continues to captivate our imagination. Whether you're an aviation enthusiast, a frequent flyer, or someone simply interested in how airplanes work, there are many fascinating facts that might surprise you. In this blog post, we'll explore ten intriguing facts about aviation, shedding light on the remarkable history, technology, and people behind the scenes.
1. The Wright Brothers' Historic Flight
Most people know that Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first powered flight in 1903, but what many don’t realize is that it lasted only 12 seconds and covered just 120 feet. This monumental achievement in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, was the beginning of human flight, paving the way for the aviation industry as we know it today.
2. The Largest Passenger Aircraft
The Airbus A380 holds the title of the largest passenger aircraft in the world. It can carry up to 850 passengers in an all-economy configuration and typically features two full-length passenger decks. Its massive size and advanced technology make it a marvel of modern engineering, demonstrating just how far aviation has come since the Wright brothers’ era.
3. The World’s First Commercial Flight
The world’s first commercial airline flight took place on January 1, 1914. The St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line flew a route across Tampa Bay, Florida, with a fare of $5, which is equivalent to about $150 today. This flight marked the beginning of a new era in transportation, setting the stage for commercial aviation to become a global phenomenon.
4. Air Traffic Control
The concept of air traffic control was born in the 1920s. The first air traffic control tower was established at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport in 1930. Today, air traffic controllers play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of air travel, managing thousands of flights daily across the globe.
5. The Invention of the Black Box
The black box, formally known as the flight data recorder (FDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR), was invented in the 1950s. This device records critical flight information and cockpit conversations, helping investigators understand the causes of accidents. Interestingly, the black box is not actually black; it’s bright orange to make it easier to locate after an incident.
6. Aviation Fuel Efficiency
Modern aircraft are much more fuel-efficient than their predecessors. For instance, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is designed to use 20% less fuel than older models. This improvement is achieved through advanced materials and technologies that optimize aerodynamics and reduce weight. As the aviation industry continues to innovate, we can expect even more significant advancements in fuel efficiency.
7. The Role of Flight Attendants
Flight attendants are often seen as the friendly faces of an airline, but their job goes far beyond serving snacks and drinks. They are trained to handle emergencies, provide first aid, and ensure passenger safety. Their role is vital, as they are the first line of defense in ensuring that flights operate smoothly and safely.
8. Airplanes Are Equipped to Fly Without Pilots
While it might sound like science fiction, many modern airplanes have sophisticated autopilot systems that can fly the aircraft without human intervention. These systems can handle everything from takeoff to landing, though pilots remain crucial for monitoring and controlling the aircraft. The advancements in automation have made air travel safer and more efficient.
9. The Effect of Weather on Aviation
Weather plays a significant role in aviation safety and operations. Pilots must be aware of various weather conditions, such as turbulence, thunderstorms, and fog. For example, thunderstorms can create severe turbulence and lightning hazards, leading to flight delays or diversions. Understanding weather patterns is an essential skill for pilots and air traffic controllers alike.
10. The Future of Aviation
The future of aviation is promising, with advancements in technology leading to the development of electric and hybrid aircraft. Companies are investing in research and development to create eco-friendly planes that reduce carbon emissions. As global awareness of climate change grows, the aviation industry is working to adapt and innovate to meet environmental challenges.

To Arms - Shortly after Florida became the first state to vote to recognize Donald Trump Jr. as President, a wave of rioting and civil unrest explodes across the country. Magats attack government buildings, abortion clinics, and prominent progressive institutions. In the most extreme cases, Deputy Gangs and Police Unions organize to either leave local governments to their fate or join the right wing mob outright. In some cases, like in LA and Houston, Police forces attempt to capture local officials and establish municipal juntas. While initially slow to respond, President Harris invokes the Insurrection Act and deploys the National Guard and US Army to suppress the rioters. In many cases, loyal civilians organize to suppress the riots themselves. In LA, the Crips, Bloods, and Latin Kings band together with protestors and manage to stop the cops from taking power before the National Guard can get mobilized, and actually form a loyalist militia unit that would help pacify the Central Valley. Trump's Army - In Mar-a-Lago, the MAGA regime formed a government nearly a month before the official Inauguration Day. Its first act was to consolidate the various state defense forces into a single National Défense Force, and impose the first Draft since the Vietnam War to raise 300,000 troops. Its members are mostly retired US military and ex-cops who's departments were provincialized by state governments over the last 4 years. Their equipment and vehicles are primarily military surplus donated to police departments over the last 40 years via the DoD's 1033 program, however a good deal also includes donated surplus from private citizens. While the structure of the NDF is still being set up, State Defense Forces begin seizing military arsenals and moving against loyalist National Guard units. In Illinois a joint invasion by the Indiana and Missouri state guards carries out an attack against Scott AFB near Belleville, and actually captures the base and 71 aircraft. The few planes that manage to escape do so with no ammo or munitions in a colossal embarrassment for the Air Force and the Illinois National Guard. A few weeks after the inauguration of Alexandria-Ocasio-Cortez, the Illinois National Guard has been fallen back and been bottled up in Springfield and Rock Island, with only a small garrison in Chicago left to defend the city from a mob of right wing militants and the NDF. AOC's First 100 Days - Immediately upon taking office AOC orders the US Navy to deploy to the Great Lakes to provide air cover to those cities along I-80 and begins pulling American forces from overseas deployments. The House of Representatives has been whittled down to 299 members, 201 Democrats, and 98 former Republicans, now barred by an act of Congress from affiliating with the GOP. Most form ranks around Mitt Romney's National Union Party which has a grand total of one former Democrat among its members: former Senator Krysten Sinema now representing David Schweikert's old district. With supermajorities in both houses, and progressive control of the Democratic Caucus, AOC is able to push through dozens of bills in her first few days on the job. The first is a new version of the ERA authored by Katie Porter that passed the House in 2028 and can now clear the Senate. To the shock of the more moderate members of the Democratic Party, AOC puts forward her Green New Deal virtually unchanged. In a public address she ties the GND explicitly to the war effort: domestic oil sources and most of the country's refineries are in Republican hands, contested, or still flooded after the last hurricane season; most of the country's coal reserves are similarly in rebel hands; meanwhile the Green Zones, those areas controlled by the Federal Government, are home to most of the country's renewable energy sources. At the President's urging Congress raises taxes, establishes a wealth tax, and authorizes trillions in new spending to restructure the economy of the two main Green Zones into full war production. Congress also supports the wartime suspension of Habeus Corpus, but is less supportive of the President re-establishing the Office of War Information which places unprecedented restrictions on online media and brings the mainstream press to heel in an effort to stop the spread of disinformation from foreign and domestic bot farms and to cut through the noise and opinion pieces that were preventing people from getting often life saving information. This executive order comes in the middle of impeachment proceedings for Supreme Court justices accused of aiding and abetting the Trump regime, much to the irritation of Congress. Thomas remains in DC defiant of Congressional oversight, while Alito and Kavanaugh flee to Mar-a-Lago, taking some of the heat off the President. The Everything Shortage - While new battery plants and renewable energy sources come online the US is forced to seek foreign sources of oil and gas once again. By July the Gulf Coast oil refineries have been mostly recaptured, and Chicago itself is secure enough to gain access to its refineries which when combined with those in New Jersey and California produce enough fuel to avoid catastrophe in uncontested regions, at least with wartime fuel rationing. Food security is addressed as early as April through a series of executive orders to compel farms in the Central Valley of California to tear down their orchards and wineries, avoid planting water intensive crops, and cover the central valley in fields of wheat, soy, and potatoes. In the Southwest, huge algae farms blanket the desert to provide a source of plant-based proteins. In the highly contested Midwest, the situation is far more grim. By late fall temperatures have fallen to minus 70 with the wind chill and people loyal to both factions are left to freeze or starve in their homes. Fully half of the population of these states become DPs and are forced to flee to neighboring states or into Canada in hopes of riding out the war in safety. 16 million DPs will stream into Ontario by the end of the year, far exceeding Ottawa's ability to manage the situation. American refugees pick supermarket shelves clean, stretch public services past the breaking point, and overwhelm the RCMP and local cops' ability to keep order. By year's end Canada is begging Washington to help get its citizens under control while they try and deal with their own group of White Christian Nationalist rebels in Alberta. The most the US government can do is ask NATO for support, and include Canada in the Continental Air Lift, a program initiated to supply loyalist holdouts too far inland to be supplied by the Navy or by overland convoy. It won't be enough. The New World Factory - Not all is gloom and doom by the end of the First Year of this second civil war. The Surplus in solar energy in the southwest has made it possible for the US military to continue to operate as a mechanized force in the region, using civilian electric vehicles to maintain supply lines, and secure much of New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. With the surge in Green New Deal dollars, and new immigrant labor incentives the Southwest experiences a manufacturing boom, providing everything from microchips to munitions to the war effort. Most who come to the southwest have to do so on foot or by boat from overseas after the US suspends all non-essential air travel to conserve fuel. Refugee camps are emptied out after the Department of Housing seizes most of the country's unsold houses and apartments, and unoccupied offices. War Crimes - It took the MAGA regime all of five minutes to show its true colors. One of the first bills passed by the Republican Congress was their own suspension of Habeus Corpus, but this would not just be used to conduct the mass arrest of essentially anyone the MAGA movement deemed a threat. Political dissidents, religious minorities, LGBT people, women who sought any form of reproductive care and any doctors who provided it, all found themselves rounded up and tossed into prisons. To "solve" the problem of prison overcrowding the MAGA regime took the broadest possible interpretation of the Punishment Clause as possible and effectively reinstituted chattel slavery for any non-whites who did not fall in line. As for those unfortunate enough to be rounded up into prisons, a campaign of extermination began almost immediately. All of this went largely unnoticed by the Federal Government until the Marines and Navy Bluejackets reached Angola prison at the end of October 2029. The Farm was well known, and most expected to find the pre-war form of penal slavery that had been in place for generations. What they found instead were tens of thousands of half starved slaves in the fields living in shipping containers, and in the main prison complex what the President called, "a monument to cruelty." At least 10,000 people were in the prison walls, emaciated and beaten, but still alive. There were another 30,000 dead bodies in an open mass grave. Most were dead as exposure to hydrogen-cyanide gas, though there were newer bodies that had clearly been shot in an attempt by the guards to hide their crimes prior to retreating. AGEAST's military governor, upon finding out about this, reportedly vomited his guts out before ordering the conscription of every civilian in his territory, age 16 to 80, to aid in the identifying of bodies and the digging of graves. South Texas - For much of 2029, southern Texas remained heavily contested as loyal partisans and troops from Fort Hood battle to keep at least the Southern Half of the Texas Triangle in Union hands. Many call the Texas front a Civil War within a Civil War. The end of the year brings a well needed victory to the Democratic forces at the Battle of Houston, which finally secures the Gulf Coast from Brownsville to New Orleans. Leaders of the Free Texas movement use this as an opportunity to form a new government. Free Texas is recognized as the official government of Texas by Congress, and the state essentially gives itself the power to secede from itself using the Tyler-Texas treaty as a pretext to form the new state of South Texas. Although Congress will debate the admission of the 53rd State for at least another year.

AYAHUASCA CHURCH LEADER BECOMES VIOLENT by Davivid Rose Via Flickr: "Ayahuasca church leader randomly assaults sleeping United passenger in bloody mid-flight beating, feds say" Justin Rohrlich 11.1. 2024, The Independent "A former leader of an ayahuasca church in Florida is facing criminal charges over accusations he randomly sucker punched a sleeping passenger during a flight from California to Washington, D.C., beating the fellow traveler — for no apparent reason — until the cabin was speckled with blood, according to a federal complaint filed Tuesday. About two hours into the five-hour journey on Monday aboard United Airlines flight 2247 from San Francisco to Dulles, Everett Chad Nelson, 44, left his seat in the rear of the aircraft and headed to one of the lavatories up front, the complaint states. There were 82 passengers and six crew aboard the flight, a United spokesperson told The Independent. When Nelson exited the bathroom, he stopped at seat 12F and 'without notice, began physically attacking a sleeping male passenger by punching him repeatedly in the face and head until blood was drawn,' the complaint alleges, adding that the assault continued for a full minute. The man began screaming, after which a Good Samaritan intervened and managed to pull Nelson off of him, according to the complaint. Aside from giving the unidentified passenger two black eyes, Nelson opened up a gash on the man’s nose, spattering blood on his seat, the wall, the window, and the sleeves of Nelson’s green windbreaker, the complaint goes on. It provides no motive, does not say the two had a preexisting relationship of any kind, and reads as if the pummeling came completely out of nowhere. 'Nelson had no observable injuries and there was no indication that [the alleged victim] struck him in defense,' the complaint states. Following the shocking beatdown, the complaint says flight attendants moved Nelson to a seat up front, where the person who stepped in was able to keep an eye on him for the remainder of the flight. Numerous other passengers witnessed the beatdown, and the victim was treated for his injuries by a doctor who happened to be onboard, the complaint continues. The victim was deaf and non-verbal, according to one passenger who saw the vicious beatdown. 'Thanks to the quick action of our crew and customers, one passenger was restrained after becoming physically aggressive toward another customer on a flight from San Francisco to Washington Dulles on Monday,' a United official told The Independent. 'The flight landed safely and was met by paramedics and local law enforcement.' Nelson, a Virginia native, grew up in a “strict independent fundamentalist Bible-believing Baptist family,” according to a speaker’s bio from a 2022 conference for investors in the psychedelics industry. On track to become a missionary, Nelson instead earned a degree in computer engineering from George Mason University in Virginia and worked on drone aircraft beginning in 2004. He got married and things were fine for a while – until '[r]ejection of God and everything spiritual eventually led to my life falling apart.' 'Ayahuasca plus open-minded spiritual study saved my life,” Nelson said in his bio. “It showed me that sharing my gifts is my path with heart. I am now forming an Ayahuasca Church in Southern Florida. We have a grand vision to build a sacred temple in the shape of an elven star. Foundation Purchases and Begins Restoration of First Learjet
In August 2023, the Classic Learjet Foundation (CLJF), made up of past and present Wichita, Kansas, aerospace workers, raised the $90,000 required to acquire the first production Learjet (23-003). CLIF achieved this milestone less than a year after the nonprofit’s establishment, with the express purpose of acquiring and restoring the first purpose-built business jet ever made.
The acquisition, part of the foundation’s Living Flight History initiative, stemmed from an owner who had kept the light jet on his property intact for years, aware of its historical significance. The groundbreaking Lear Jet 23 aircraft accommodates eight people and first came off the Learjet production line in October 1963. The Chemical and Industrial Company of Ohio, on October 13, 1964, received the first commercial model, the 23-0023.
When first produced, the groundbreaking Learjet represented a culmination of William Lear’s aircraft design ethos. Having launched an aircraft business in Switzerland in the 1950s, Lear oversaw its relocation to Wichita in 1962, focusing on expansion that took advantage of a skilled local workforce. In 1990, Bombardier took ownership of the Learjet product line and delivered innovation by creating the Learjet 60, which earned a name as the top-selling aircraft within its class.
The long-tenured business aircraft's last flight was in 1998, giving it 34 years of corporate service. After its flight, the aircraft remained grounded for 27 years, including over 10 years in outside storage with its previous owner in Florida. The Learjet product line itself ended production in 2022, with the final production aircraft in that lineage delivered to the Grand Rapids, Michigan, company Northern Jet Management. The nearly 60 years of production produced over 10,000 Lear business jets manufactured in Wichita.
Representatives negotiated a selling price with the aircraft owner, but the foundation’s fundraising still found itself $50,000 short of meeting its goal in June 2023. At this point, it invited Clay Lacy, a longtime aviator and Learjet owner, and International Jet Services CEO Lynn Krogh to Wichita to tour the Bombardier Learjet’s delivery hangar. Accompanied by the daughter-in-law of the late Bill Lear, the visitors procured an aircraft. The hands-on experience led them to take on roles as primary acquisition sponsors, covering the remainder of the funds needed. Although the aircraft's engine had already seen an overhaul, it still served the necessary purpose.
Disassembly work on the 23-003 airframe began just after Christmas 2023, with seven volunteers coordinating the removal of gyros, avionics, air bottles, and oxygen. As the CLJF volunteers reported, the oxygen and air bottles still retained internal pressure, even after many years of no use. They found several old wasps' nests in the avionics bay, revealing how nature had partially reclaimed the aircraft.
During the process, they removed and tagged each 23-003 part before storing it. Restoring and replacing the various parts became an ongoing process, with the full refurbishment expected to take five years. Once the restoration is complete, pilots and crew members will be able to take flights in an aircraft that helped define the business jet industry as it exists today.

Franken-Bird: USAF wants to turn two damaged F-35s into an operational jet
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 12/05/2023 - 23:15 in Military
F-35 maintenance specialists are at Hill Air Base, Utah, taking on a seemingly impossible task - to unite two aircraft damaged by accidents into a restored and fully operational F-35A Lightning II.
Led by the Joint Program Office (JPO) F-35, the project requires a "dream team" of exceptionally qualified individuals from the JPO, the 388ª Fighter Wing, the Ogden Air Logistics Complex and Lockheed Martin.
“This is the first time in the F-35 program and a very interesting project,” said Dan Santos, heavy maintenance manager of the F-35 JPO.
After researching feasibility, the F-35 JPO, working with the 388ª Fighter Wing, chose to rebuild the AF-211, an aircraft that had a landing gear collapse and landed with its nose in June 2020.
The nose section of this aircraft is being replaced by the undamaged nose of the AF-27, an F-35 that suffered a serious engine fire at Eglin Air Base, Florida, in 2014, and is now serving as a USAF Air Battle Repair and Damage coach in Hill.
In recent years, the F-35 JPO has sought new opportunities to reuse parts and usable systems of damaged F-35 aircraft, for continuous use and benefit for the maintenance and operations of the F-35.

Based on the experience gained in several recent aircraft rescue and reuse projects - including the installation of the first F-35 maintainer training center using recovered aircraft sections, as well as the partial restoration of a recovered F-35 fuselage for use as an ABDR Trainer - the F-35 JPO is now taking a step forward.
The F-35 JPO took advantage of this newly created network of qualified professionals, resources and facilities, all located at Hill Air Base, to carry out the "Franken-bird" project.
The Ogden Air Logistics Complex played a significant role in providing hangar space and heavy equipment for the project, Santos said.

"It takes a team for this type of enterprise to be successful," said Santos. "I am very impressed by the collaborative efforts of the various agencies of Hill Air Base, working together to make this happen.
Along with Lockheed Martin, the F-35 Joint Program Office and the 388ª Fighter Wing, several units of the Ogden Air Logistics Complex, including the 570º Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 576º Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 809º Maintenance Support Squadron and 309º Expeditionary Depot Maintenance Squadron, are among the multiple units that provide direct support.
Keith White, a contracting officer of the 388ª Fighter Wing, said that although the jet is owned by the wing, it is still part of an F-35 JPO contract, and Lockheed is the contractor responsible for the work.

“Work began on the viability of this project in January 2020, when the F-35 JPO came to us because we had already completed the large damage restoration projects for the F-22,” said Scott Taylor, chief mechanical engineer at Lockheed Martin.
However, unlike previous projects, Taylor said that this initiative stands out due to its meticulous documentation, which will be used to establish standardized F-35 procedures that can be perfectly integrated into routine operations in the future.
“All sections of the aircraft can be uncoupled and re-coupled theoretically, but this has never been done before,” Taylor said. "This is the first F-35 'Franken-bird' to date. That's history."
To complete the work on site in Hill, entirely new and exclusive specialized tools, accessories and equipment have been designed and built, specifically adapted for mobility. These have potential future uses abroad.
“We design versatile tools that fit perfectly in a Conex box, making them transportable to various locations, including areas of advanced operation,” Taylor said.
These new mobile accessories achieve the same results as large automated and stationary manufacturing jigs at the F-35 plant in Fort Worth, Texas, but with a new approach. The additional capacity will benefit the entire F-35 program.
“The F-35 program is still young compared to all legacy fuselages,” said Dave Myers, chief engineer of the F-35 JPO's Lightning support team. process with which we can move forward.”
This project is currently several months in advance and is due in March 2025.
"This project will not only return a combat resource to the combatant, but will also open the door for the repair of future crashed aircraft using tools, equipment, techniques and knowledge that have been developed," said Santos.
