Chris Stein, Joseph Gedeon and Oliver Milman at The Guardian:
A collision on Wednesday between an American Airlines jet and a US military helicopter near Washington DC has killed all 67 people onboard both aircraft, in the United States’ worst aviation disaster in years. The incident occurred at about 9pm as the passenger plane was on approach to land at Reagan National airport from Wichita, Kansas. Operated by the regional carrier PSA Airlines as American Eagle flight 5342, the jet was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, and collided with a US army helicopter with three soldiers onboard, sending both into the Potomac River. “This was a dark and excruciating night in our nation’s capital and in our nation’s history, and a tragedy of terrible proportions,” Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday. “As one nation, we grieve for every precious soul that has been taken from us so suddenly.” It was the first fatal commercial airline crash in the US since 2009, according to Sean Duffy, the newly confirmed transportation secretary who was sworn into office the day before the crash. He added that he believed the incident was “preventable”. The defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, said the helicopter involved carried “a fairly experienced crew” based at Fort Belvoir in Virginia that was conducting a “required annual night evaluation”. “They did have night vision goggles,” Hegseth said, adding that an investigative team had already been deployed to the crash site and that it would determine whether the aircraft was in the corridor and at the right altitude at the time of the incident. “It’s a tragedy, a horrible loss of life,” he said. Trump, who was sworn into the presidency last week, alternated between consoling the nation and seeking to use the crash for political gain. At his press conference, he argued that changes made under Joe Biden to requirements for hiring air traffic controllers may have been a factor in the accident.
[...] Several of the victims were in Wichita for a development camp hosted by US figure skating, according to the Skating Club of Boston, which released the names of its six skaters, coaches and family members who were onboard the jet.
Sad sight all around, as no survivors are expected in Wednesday night’s mid-air collision in the Potomac River in DC.

The man on the radio gave us all a Wednesday wave and worked his musical magic whilst sipping his coffee and dipping a chocolate bar into it. Weatherwise there's a bit of a nip in the air, but there’s still sunshine! I've got my non-existent bikini on under about 5 jumpers … now where did I put the suntan lotion? The traffic lady talked about all sorts of car queues due to The Ploughing, then settled into conversation with the man on the radio and shared his chocolate.
Today’s groaner: Transcripts of radio conversations of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities. Canadians: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid collision. Americans: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision. Canadians: Negative. Divert your course 15 degrees to the South. Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. Divert your course NOW. Canadians: Sorry. I say again, you divert YOUR course. Americans: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS, AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH, I SAY AGAIN, THAT IS ONE-FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER MEASURES WILL BE TAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP. Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call! ;-D badoom tish … here all week!!
Survived yesterday's shiny metropolis visit ... just. Biggest Dog did better and was less bothered by the general overdose of noggin information. Got back to the car and she did a fine job of trying to dig to Australia via the back seat, before settling down for a much needed nap. I'm beginning to think I should try the whole digging thing, see if it's as snooze inducing as it seems to be.
Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday ... condensation all over the window and a large cup of coffee to hand with daydreams of Maya Deren ...

USS Borie, is shown just before she was sunk by torpedo bombers from the escort aircraft carrier USS Card. The Borie, the day before had blasted one Nazi sub to the bottom, while acting as an escort to the Card, and then rammed a second enemy U-Boat. The collision opened her seams and, the next day, her skipper gave the order to abandon ship.

Phantom Friday...
...hard times 2.
On the night of July 29, USS Midway was transiting through the Balabac Strait, the passage that separates the Philippines’ Palawan Island from the northern Borneo coast, heading for the Indian Ocean for a 3-month deployment. As Midway passed through the narrow strait, the Panamanian freighter Cactus was spotted approaching from the west. The crew of Midway warily watched the approaching freighter, whose course would take it safely behind the carrier. However, the Cactus unexpectedly veered to port and struck Midway amid-ships.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Cactus sliced through the hull directly under the overhanging flight deck. The collision ruptured fuel lines, damaged an aircraft elevator and smashed the ship’s optical landing system. More critically, the carrier’s liquid oxygen plant was shattered. Two sailors working in the liquid-oxygen plant were killed, and 6 aircraft, including these Phantoms, were written off. Luckily, there was no fire.

What do you think Chim& Eddie are gonna involve with the hangar ( bts of Kenny & ryan)
Have I missed some obscure bts with Kenny and Ryan in it? If not, then I assume it would play out like an actual aircraft emergency.
If it comes to the scenario where an amateur on the plane has to be instructed through landing the crippled airplane, it'll probably be the responsibilities of air traffic control and whatever professional flight instructors invited to the tower. It's not just about guiding the plane towards the airport, it's also about diverting other traffic away, clearing the airspace for the emergency landing.
The first responders called in to help out would obviously wait on the side until the plane actually lands/crashes. I guess Chim, Eddie and Hen would be briefed by the commander of the emergency about the course of actions once the plane arrive. Maybe they'll be studying the layout of that particular aircraft just to further improve the efficiency of the evacuation. Modern airliners are required to be able to completely evacuated in 90 seconds, so that might be a challenge for regular firefighters working outside of the airport.
So, in real life, an emergency landing requires 3 different kinds of responses: fire suppression, medical assistance, and rescue.
If the plane is not physically on fire, the fire suppression team, usually the airport firefighters in the crash trucks, would drive around the aircraft and inspect for any possible fire. If the plane is on fire, they would be laying foam on the ground to aide evacuation, then spray whatever foam or water they have to stop the plane from burning. A burning plane releases a lot of toxic fume. Like the Haneda runway collision that happened at the start of this year, fire engines were called in from al across Tokyo in an attempt to contain the fire. They didn't succeed, so they left the A350 to burn itself out.
Any kind of emergency landing, no matter how severe, would still require the full attention of the medical team. Injured passengers/crew onboard would have to be tended to, obviously, but an emergency evacuation via slides is likely to injure passengers as well. It's a steep slide, and everyone is pushed to get off the plane ASAP, so a lot of sprain ankles and broken bones are to be expected. So I can imagine the 118 helping the pax escape and provide essential medical help.
If the emergency landing goes badly and it breaks into several parts, trapping passengers inside, a rescue team would be needed in order to free them, before the aircraft completely destroy itself. That would be some high stake drama, because a broken plane filled with jet fuel can explode anytime.
Even if the plane landed in one piece, it's still not totally safe for the first responders. Emirates, the flag carrier of Dubai prides itself over having no passenger or crew fatalities in its entire operation, right? Well, a 777 crash landed back in 2016. Sure, all of the pax escaped unharmed, but 7 firefighters were injured and another one was killed when an engine suddenly exploded.
So to answer your question, I don't know for sure what they'll be doing at the airport. But I hope it's some cool firefighter saving people stuff with high stakes.

23rd May 1943 - 80 years ago. In the Atlantic, U-752 became the first submarine to be sunk by rocket projectiles. Tracking a convoy, the boat’s captain, Ernst Schroeter, surfaced the boat without first checking for aircraft, much to the consternation of his crew. A Swordfish of 819 Squadron from the escort carrier HMS Archer sighted U-752 almost immediately and used cloud cover to launch an attack at close range.
The aircraft was armed with ‘rocket spears’ carrying a cast iron warhead designed to punch through the pressure hull of a U-Boat. Over the course of four passes, the eight rockets were fired in pairs. U-752 had attempted to dive but was holed in the wardroom and began filling with water, which flooded the batteries. The boat surfaced, only to turn in circles with a jammed rudder. Attempts to fire at the Swordfish were hampered by a fault with the 20mm AA gun; only single shots were possible.
At this point, a Martlet of 892 Squadron arrived and sprayed U-752’s conning tower with machine gun fire, killing Schroeter. The crew were ordered to abandon the submarine by the Engineer Officer, who stayed below to open the vents and ensure its scuttling. 13 of the crew were rescued by HMS Escapade, while 4 more were lucky enough to be picked up by U-91; 30 men were lost.
This was to be the only successful attack by aircraft from HMS Archer. The carrier suffered from repeated mechanical defects throughout her brief career and was withdrawn from operational use in November 1943. She had only entered service in March 1942, after being badly damaged in a collision in January of that year.

Military Woes Continue with one High Ranking Officer After Another Relieved of Duty for Loss of Confidence, Court Martial or other demotion and derogatory assessments, which leads me to believe that Batch Promotions Suck as poor leaders get promoted with the good ones, risking national security, weaker military, poor moral, costly damages or destruction, and hurt soldiers and families or even deaths; and though DEI is part of the problem, i suspect the Bigger problem is poor leaders pushing positions and or promotions of unqualified or less qualified officers out of favors and or fraternizations❗️🤷‍♂️🧐😡🙏🇺🇸#REBTD😇
