The beginner's guide to the Pretty Series

With the recent announcement of the new Pretty Series installment titled Himitsu no AiPri, it's about time the Pretty Series returned after over a year since the Waccha PriMagi! series finale. In celebration of the newest installment, let's take a quick history lesson about the Pretty series.

The Pretty Rhythm Saga (2010-2014) - The Pretty Series saga began on July 15, 2010 with the arcade game titled Pretty Rhythm Mini Skirt. Made by Takara Tomy and developer SynSophia, this arcade game pits players in the role of Prism Stars, performing Prism Jumps, and collecting Prism Stones.

While the one that started it all made a slow start, the folks from Takara Tomy wanted to do more with the Pretty Rhythm saga, and with that, a TV anime titled Pretty Rhythm Aurora Dream was made. Aired in TV Tokyo on April 9, 2011, for 51 episodes, this anime is the fruit of Japan-Korea collaboration thanks to Japan's Tatsunoko Production and South Korea's Dong Woo Animation. The TV anime is all about Aira, Rizumu, and Mion in their quest to take on the prestigious Prism Queen Cup.

As Aira Harune's journey to become Prism Queen is completed, Mia Ageha takes the baton as the star of the next Pretty Rhythm story; Dear My Future. Aired in TV Tokyo on April 7, 2012, for 51 episodes, Dear My Future centers on the rivalry between Prizmmy☆ and the K-Pop group PURETTY. Believe it or not, there are real-life versions of the groups as seen in the anime. There's even a live-action segment featuring Prizmmy☆ as well.

As Mia Ageha's road to Grateful Symphonia is well and truly over, Naru Ayase steps to the spotlight in the third and final chapter of the Pretty Rhythm saga, titled Rainbow Live. Aired in TV Tokyo on April 6, 2013, it features an original storyline unlike the previous two. It's about Naru, An, and Ito, who are working together at the Prism Stone Shop while trying to take good care of a mysterious girl named Rinne.

Although the Pretty Rhythm saga ended, the story continues with the KING OF PRISM spinoff films featuring male characters from the Pretty Rhythm saga. They even got a 2019 anime show as well showcasing the rise of the boys who would be Septentrion.

The PriPara saga (2014-2018, 2021~) After the end of the Pretty Rhythm saga,  the folks of Takara Tomy prepped up what it seems to be the second generation of the Pretty series. It's called PriPara and it aired on TV Tokyo in the Summer of 2014 and lasted for three seasons, four if you count Idol Time PriPara of course. This anime series centers on the life and times of Laala Manaka, a little girl who wants to be the best PriPara idol. Together with Mirei Minami and Sophy Hojo, they became SoLaMi Smile and they fought their way against the best idol teams of PriPara, especially Dressing Pafe consisting of Dorothy, Reona, and Sion, Tricolore, and Gaarmageddon, among many others. PriPara is a huge win for the people behind it and such success prompted the show to spawn four movies and outrageous merchandising rights.

In the spring of 2017, the next chapter of PriPara begins with three new main characters penning the final pages of this saga. Titled Idol Time PriPara, it's all about Yui Yumekawa, whose fateful encounter with Laala Manaka changed everything following an accident. With Nino Nijiiro and Michiru Kouda joining alongside, the MY☆DREAM trio made the best closure to this saga.

Although the PriPara TV series is finished, the story continues with Idol Land PriPara. First announced in December 2020, it was originally slated to be released in the spring of 2021 until it became subject to long gestation and delayed launch dates. It was released on August 17, 2023. It is the second official PriPara app game after the defunct PriPuz puzzle app game. This app game also features an original anime series set moments after the events of Idol Time PriPara. It introduces new characters such as Amari Katasumi, Mario, and Pololo, among others.

The Kiratto PriChan years (2018-2021) - Aired in TV Tokyo since April 2018 for three seasons, Kiratto PriChan is set in a world where fame comes from social media just like in the real world. It's about a group of girls who called themselves the Miracle☆Kiratts who are striving to become the best PriChan idols above the rest. For three seasons, we watched Miracle Kiratts taking on big challenges such as heated competition with rival teams such as Meltic StAr and Ring Marry, the jewel idol competition, saving the world, the road to the Queens Grand Prix, and saving the world...again, while they do what they do best; showcasing the world that they're the best PriChan sensations ever known.

PriMagi (2021-2022) - Waccha PriMagi! is the fourth installment of the Pretty Series that revolves around the lives of Primagistas striving to become the best of the best. The show is about Matsuri Hibino, a middle-schooler who dreams of being the best just like her idol, the legendary Jennifer Sumire Sol.

AiPri - After over a year of void, the Pretty Series has returned with the newest installment coming to TV Tokyo this April 2024. Titled Himitsu no AiPri, the new series stars Minori Fujidera as Himari Aozora and Sae Hiratsuka as Mitsuki Hoshikawa. For the first time in Pretty Series, the animation sequences were provided by OLM, the studio behind the Pokemon and Yo-Kai Watch anime series, while South Korea's Dongwoo A&E returned to cooperate for it.

Welcome back, Pretty Series! The world can't wait for the franchise's comeback show this April.

Waccha Primagi! Love/Smile Element Theory

So the latest opening for Waccha Primagi reveals Matusri’s elemental coord.

Now, on the official twitter, they just posted the new makeup for this coord, and it was called the Love Element. So I’m going to assume that the element Matusri awakens is the Love Element. But I noticed that this dress looks really similar to Mirai’s(Kiratto Prichan) style of dress.

So I really hope think that the Love Element “spirit” might be Mirai. Since the trend has been past Pretty Series stars appearing as characters that support the girls or are famous idols. Aside from Yui who just ran a rice field(she was still an amazing idol) and Laala who was Kuma. But I think that set up was a reference to Yui sleeping in the rice cooker in Idolland.

However, this also means that the coord that they had been slowly revealing for the past few months, was not the coord for the 6th element. Despite the fact that it the coord parts were called the “Smile Element”. SO, what is this coord?

I have two theories about this coord. The first being that this will be the actual element’s coord. My reasoning, Mirai is probably the Love Elemental. And this is the coord she will wear when she appears. Just like Yui, Laala, and Mia’s coords they wore when they made cameo’s, this coord is also a Prism Stone Coord. Naru wore Dear Crown because she was it’s manager in King of Prism and Kiratto Prichan. Aira was in a team, so she wore Anju’s brand. But this coord also has a smiliar style to the flower shop coord(from season 1) and the diamond friend coord.

And “smile”, from the name of the coord, was always important to Mirai’s character. Mirai has the “kira smile” bit that she always uses to make people smile(she did this for a crying baby and a sad Emo). Also, the main song for Kiratto Prichan season 2, was called Diamond Smile. Which was the season she beat everyone in the Jewel Selection. So the coord being called smile element, makes sense if Mirai was the one who will ear it. It would be called “Smile Element” if

As for the other theory, I think the Smile Element coord could be the coord that will be the one that the girls will compete for. Mainly because of this end scene from the opening

The stage matches the coord. And it looks like Matsuri and Jennifer are competing(propbably to get back the coord and Waccha she took).

So I watched the Pretty Series 10th Anniversary Broadcast! 

Here is what we learned (in broadcast order):

*Mirai’s voice actress, Coco, was only 8 years old when Pretty Rhythm came out. She used to collect Prism Stones and even traveled to Tokyo to go to Prism Stone once. (In other words, she’s a former prism star!)

*In ten years there have been a total of 475 episodes (including King of Prism), 90 CG character models (including the different Falulus, Daias, etc.), over 300 songs (not even including remixes, different versions, etc.), and over 10,000 coord items (the real number is more or less impossible to count because the same coords have been released over and over again in different gens). 

*They shared some PriTama 2 arcade info, as well as two new anime key visuals (kinda spoilery, you can see them starting at 17:37). 

*My dream Pretty All Friends Celebrity Team was announced except they forgot Chili: Hibiki, Kanon, Serena, Chae-Kyong, Shuka

*The Pretty Series 10th Anniversary logo was revealed and it was announced that there will be a CG performance with all the past main characters (Aira, Mia, Naru, Laala, Yui) featured on the PriChan anime in the fall.

*The HappyPri Memorial merch series was announced.

*Themed visuals for the Prism Stone Audition winners were revealed: Laala/Mirai are knights, Dorothy/Emo are magical girls, and Rinka/Aroma are... kung-fu tigers?

*The Pretty Series 10th Anniversary Cafe maid-themed art for Mirai was revealed and silhouettes were shown for the other characters.

And finally...

They appeared to show a very brief preview for the upcoming PriPara mobile game? (Skip to 27:56.)

But before we jump to any conclusions, there are two things I want to point out... -The phone with the game was taken out of an envelope labeled “PriChan”. -Someone blew up the phone screen and the only buttons I can see are the orange one that might say “item” and the blue one that looks like a camera. 

This made my stomach sink with the idea that this might be a PriChan photo app or something. But who knows. And maybe the PriChan envelope doesn’t mean anything since it’s true you can see Kuma and one of the girls is in the PriPara training outfit. Could be related to both? All we can say so far is an app is definitely coming out and MyCharas will be involved somehow!

Pretty Rhythm DMF 41

Pretty Rhythm: The anime where redesigning a dress could literally kill you.

(I have started summarizing the episodes which did not get subbed. It starts from episode 40 so please scroll down on my blog or search the Dear My Future tag to start there.)

Puretty is back from Korea! Prizzmy was worried they had gone to stay, but Hye In reminds them that since Serenon w/K and LoveMix are gone only Prizzmy and Puretty remain to protect Pretty Top. 

Meanwhile, Kyoko is worried about sacrificing the girls to protect the school…

Prizzmy and Puretty are discussing how they can jump a Prism Act good enough to beat Aira when Sho and Yunsu come to ask for their Symphonia stones so they can Pretty Remake them for everyone. 

However Kyoko won’t allow Prizzmy and Puretty to compete against MARs in Road to Symphonia anymore. When they protest, Kyoko laughs it off saying it won’t make her any money.

But Jun knows it’s more than that and confronts her. Kyoko is holding her father’s sketchbook. She says she used to look up to the Grateful Symphonia because it was her father’s dream. She had believed it was the key to her family’s happiness… but now…

Jun calls her out for lying to the girls to protect them. But Kyoko would rather disband Pretty Top than lose more people in her life. Jun grips her shoulders and says he will always protect her. Kyoko thanks him for being her little brother. Prizzmy, watching from a balcony above, sees all.

Prizzmy are troubled over what to do, but Mia definitely won’t give up on getting Aira back. Suddenly Ayami notices a special note about today in her notebook. 

In the Prism World Meganee tells Sho and Yunsu it’s dangerous to remake Symphonia dresses because the original designer’s soul is in them. She looks at the two of them and says “I cannot guarantee your safety.”

Kintaro is on TV with MARs. He says MARs will be performing a new Road to Symphonia Prism Act. Mion and Rhythm are hesitant but Aira agrees immediately. They are getting closer to Grateful Symphonia.

Kyoko turns off the TV and wonders how she can protect Aira and the others. She gets a knock on the door where the PairChams (what are they called again…) tell her Prizzmy is in all sorts of trouble. When she doesn’t react immediately they just throw a mask on her and kidnap her anyway. 

Prizzmy and the others have thrown a surprise party for the 8th anniversary of Pretty Top! 

Prizzmy talk about all they did to put together the party, and Mia asks Kyoko to believe in them. She looks around the room to see Prizzmy, Puretty, Sho, Yunsu, and Jun before bursting into tears. She apologizes for losing the ambition to chase her dreams and allows Prizzmy to participate in Road to Symphonia again. 

Yunsu and Sho bring their Symphonia Pretty Remake designs to Meganee, insisting that they won’t lose to the emotions contained within the stones. Meganee grudgingly agrees to accept their designs. 

At the ongoing performance Kintaro is frustrated that Aira’s Prism Act isn’t evolving like it’s supposed to.

Sho and Yunsu grip the Stone Make machine and be all manly men and fight the magic butterfly magic rays together to complete the stones. 

Based on their roles from earlier, Reina gets the Symphonia Tops of Intelligence for organizing the party, Karin gets the Symphonia Tops of Friendship for inviting everyone, Ayami gets the Symphonia Tops of Kindness for decorating the room with flowers, and Mia gets the Symphonia Dress of Passion for moving Kyoko’s heart. 

For some reason Mia’s dress is the only one where the Pretty Remake failed. Even Meganee is confused, but Mia is not discouraged because she still has passion in her heart.

Kintaro underestimates them at first, but with their Symphonia dresses Prizzmy are able to get through the door and perform the Road to Symphonia Prism Act. They enter the Symponia World, which is outer space with butterflies, and find MARs. But Aira still won’t leave as she wants to go farther in to get to the Symphonia radiance. A great storm comes and thrusts Prizzmy out. As they leave, Mion and Rhythm beg them to take Aira to that distant world.

MARs wins. But only just barely this time. 

After the show, Mia is shaking. She tells Puretty that the Road to Symphonia Act isn’t enough. They have to go beyond the stars to where the Symphonia radiance is. Prizzmy, having lost, is taken away in the Symphonia blimp while Kyoko and Puretty can only watch. 

Kintaro is enraged that Prizzmy can use the same power as his original designs with remade stones as the episode ends. 

Is it terrible that during these last two episodes I kinda started shipping Sho and Yunsu.

As far as I'm aware Prism Stone (and Dear Crown, if you count returning Pripara brands that got some new coords in Prichan) still exist in the arcade. Mia's IT coords and Aira's Prichan casual outfit were Prism Stone in the game. Jewel is the only real problem, but at least in anime there are more jewels than just 10. So they can just give Naru a pink jewel, like Mirai or something. It would be cute if somehow they gave her a prism stone from Pretty Rhythm though.

When Aira debuted on PriChan, her coords were re-branded as Sweet Honey 

Although Prism Stone and Dear Crown existed as brands in the PriPara era, they are not brands in PriChan. If you use PriPara-era Prism Stone and Dear Crown coords on PriChan, the game takes them as no brand. The only brands PriChan recognizes currently are the Designers 10 brands. 

I kind of doubt they would give her the same Jewel as Mirai since the Jewels have become so strongly associated with the characters, but we’ll see.

Pretty Live 2018

So on December 9th 2018 I went to the Pretty Live! And I have A LOT to say about it. 

I have been to Pretty Series, or rather PriPara concerts before, but I haven’t been to one in over a year. Also the special thing about this one was they actually featured voice actresses from EVERY SINGLE SEASON in the history of the Pretty Series.

In attendance was: iRis and Run Girls Run (this covers SoLaMi Dressing/Miracle Kiratts/Meltic Star), VAs of MyDream plus Shuka and Falala, Hibiki, Fuwari (same VA as Falala), Garmageddon, WITH and special guests Naru, Mia, Aira. Also Wa-Suta.

I think most people were here for PriPara though. Walking around the event area I think I saw mostly people with PriPara decorated bags. I’m going to guess the breakdown was about: 60% PriPara, 20% PriChan, 15% WITH, and 5% Pretty Rhythm. I was proud to be in that 5% with my Rainbow Live bags!! I saw at least one Aira bag, one Mia bag (it was mostly Paircham plushes but still ahah) and a couple Narus and it made me so happy! <3 It’s hard to say who was the most popular character overall…. Maybe Shion? Or Sara. (Most of the PriChan bags I saw were Sara.) Or Shogo. But there was a lot of variety. You can pretty much name any character and I probably saw someone who made a bag of him/her. 

It’s important to keep in mind that mostly only female fans make elaborate bags though. The male fans mostly just wear gaudy character T-shirts and put a couple keychains on a backpack.

I was surprised at how many WITH bags I saw even though they were such a small part of the event. Then again, after seeing how many fans came mostly to see them, I was surprised that WITH didn’t have any merch. They weren’t even featured in the pamphlet at all.

So the songs in the afternoon and evening performances were different but the flow was basically the same. There was no talk session. Just 2 1/2 STRAIGHT HOURS of one long medley of performances, a quick break while Run Girls Run talked about merch and news, then the big finale. (No encore. Just messages from the cast and then a screen with “Merry Prismas”.)

Run Girls Run came out as the opening act. They were alright! I was thinking to myself wow, they look super young when Coco Hayashi, voice of Mirai, actually introduced herself as being a high school 1st year. I looked it up because I wasn’t sure if I heard that right and GEEEEZUS yeah she’s 16 years old holy hell. They did Kiratto Start and Go! Up! Stardom, then replaced Kiratto Start with Prima Donna (the ending theme of Kira Kira Memorial Live) in the evening which was a really nice surprise.

Next up was Wa-suta! And I was pretty impressed with them! They seemed a lot more confident in their performance than I remembered them being last time. (When I saw them for the first time on the Summer Tour shortly after Idol Time started, I remembered thinking they seemed a little nervous?) They only did their PriChan stuff in the afternoon but in the evening they did The Biggest Paradox, which I was really happy about! I realized that I really like their PriChan stuff too though! ChanChanPuChanChanPuPrichan!! So I found myself really enjoying them and I wished their set as a little longer, but oh well. There was a lot more to come.

Then the character songs (or rather the songs where they sing in character) started, which were the bulk of the concert, and it would be impossible to remember them all. 

For the solos, some characters got longer versions of their songs than others and some were absent from one performance or another. For example, the My Dream members only sang their solos in the afternoon while Miracle Kiratts only sang their solos in the evening. And all of them sang the short versions. BUT. Hibiki and Shuka not only got featured in both shows, but got the FULL versions of their songs…. I guess that’s what it means to be celeb eh.

It was my first time seeing Madoka Asahina voice Shuka since Shuka didn’t exist the last time I went to a PriPara live. I loved how they did her hair. She looked a lot like how I might imagine an older Shuka to look. 

Poor Azusa Sato only got to sing Fuwari’s solo in the evening performance (no Falulu so no Tricolore) and nothing for Falala except for a Christmas performance with the other Idol Time girls (it was actually Lucky! Surprise Birthday re-written to have Christmas lyrics haha). I though that was a little bit sad for her. 

So in both shows I was towards the back, and since it was just a big hall of folding chairs with no elevation I couldn’t really see the stage that well. But I was close to the isle during the afternoon show which was good. They had some of the girls going around in these big carts, and a couple of them went right by me that time.

The first time was Yuina Yamada when she was singing Michiru’s solo. And the funny thing was, she was the first one who came out on a cart so nobody was expecting it. So when her song started up and everyone was like ?? where??? and I realized she was coming down the isle on a cart like five seconds earlier than the people around me. So I’m suddenly pointing up and shrieking, and everyone is like ??? what’s wrong with that weird foreign girl—AHHHHH!!!

The second time was when all of a sudden there was a huge POP, all these blue streamers rained down, the intro to Jun Amore Ai kicked in, and I looked up to see Mitsuki Saiga DIRECTLY ABOVE MY HEAD singing as Hibiki. I’m not going to forget that for a long time!! That moment alone probably made the entire thing worth it.

You can see one of the streamers I saved in the picture above. No other character got an intro like that. Only Hibiki.

I already talked about this a lot, but Meltic Star opened with their brand new song Netemo Sametemo DREAMIN' GIRL which premiered on the anime literally only a few hours before. So I, like most of the people in at the event, was hearing it for the first time. It was a really bizarre moment when we were all expecting COMETIC SILHOUETTE and then it was like wait… wait… whaaaaaaaaaaat is thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis. I didn’t find out that the song had actually been on the anime that morning until hours later.

So, of course I knew going into this that several iRis members now play double roles. But man, it still didn’t prepare me for seeing it actually in action. Especially Yuuki Wakai who is both Reona and Sara. She didn’t change her hair when she switched characters (she couldn’t do much really) so to me it felt a lot like seeing Reona dressed up in Sara’s KR performing with Meltic Star. That was a trip. Funny how she went from playing a biological male character to a boyish girl. But yeah, the iRis members are really talented. Seeing Yu Serizawa and Miyu Kubota bicker as Anna and Emo while dressed as Mirei and Sophy was craaaaaazy. 

Another thing I realized is that, with the way they cast them, both Miracle Kiratts and Meltic Star are made up of both members of iRis and Run Girls Run intertwined together. So you basically can’t have a PriChan concert without having both groups present. This to me shows a commitment to keeping PriPara going as I would think all members of iRis will likely always show up to the bigger concerts like this one, and I feel like it keeps things strong the way they mixed up the new girls with the experienced. I thought it was strange to do it this way at first, but after thinking about it a little bit it makes sense. 

Moving on, WITH performed and they were pretty great!!  In the afternoon and evening they did one of their new songs (a different one each time) plus Gira Galactic Tightrope. Both of their additional songs were songs I was hearing for the first time. The crowd loved it and  I was pretty impressed with their performance as well. Even though I didn’t know their songs, it was really easy to get into them. By the end, like with Wa-suta, I found myself wishing their set could have been a little longer.

I still feel like I wish someone would make me a Powerpoint or something which explains how WITH got so popular despite being such minor characters who barely did anything in Idol Time. But during the event it finally dawned on me that it’s probably not about WITH as characters at all. It’s probably that people just like their voice actors. Is it? They are indeed cuties.

(Also explains why I have had trouble getting into them, since I just don’t follow real life celebrities the way other people do. But putting that aside…)

When Gaarmageddon was performing in the afternoon I noticed Gaaruru’s costume was missing a wing. I spent most of the performance wondering if she always had one wing and I just never noticed. But nope, she had two in the evening ahah. I wonder when it fell off and if that will make the DVD.

Oh yeah, so you remember that fan created unit from a while back? Where people could vote at Prism Stone for their favorite characters? Well if you don’t, Dorothy got #1 and ended up being grouped with the #2 and #3 characters Aroma and Hibiki to make the unit “Doramageddon Hi”.

I thought they just did this to sell merch and the unit would just fade into obscurity but NO.

THEY GOT A SONG

Basically it was.... a giant mess. It was mostly just Dorothy and Aroma arguing the entire time about who was more popular, ever so often being interrupted by Hibiki just not givin a f singing these MAJESTIC lyrics over them like the class act she is.

It’s hard to imagine this song ever making it to CD. I mean, a huge chuck of it is just Dorothy and Aroma getting the audience to yell “Do-ro-thy!” “Devi-Devi-Devi!” “DO-RO-THY!” “DEVI-DEVI-DEVI” over and over again while getting faster and faster. But I at least I hope someone uploads it when it comes out on DVD. What a terrible combination for a group ahah. (People didn’t vote for that group specifically. They just combined the most popular characters. Perhaps especially because of that we have nothing but clashing personalities.)

Azuki Shibuya, aka Zucchan who plays Dorothy was really eating it up too. She had blue hair, the only cast member who went as far as to completely match her character’s hairstyle (the others just did what they could with their natural hair), so she basically WAS Dorothy for this event. She agreed in the pamphlet that she basically does become Dorothy as soon as she steps on stage. Also she was super shocked when she found out Dorothy was actually number 1!! (So happy for her.)

So like I said, after about 2 1/2 hours straight of performances we finally got a little break where Run Girls Run came out, talked about the merch being sold in the next hall over, and made a few announcements. Some of the things they talked about were a “remastered” version Kira Kira Memorial Live coming back to theaters for a short time in January, and a Tsutaya TV Valentines project that I didn’t really understand.

Then they made the “big” one and announced season 2 of PriChan!

But. They way in which they announced it was kinda odd.

Because they started off by showing Pretty Rhythm Miniskirt arcade footage and seeing that on the big screen was like whaaaat. Then they started going through the logos of the Pretty Rhythm to PriPara seasons in order by year before getting up to PriChan. After showing the logo for PriChan, the kira door (??) closed on the PriChan logo with a SLAM! Then silence. It was kinda jarring.

So in the three seconds that followed I was like… what… what does it mean… is PriChan ENDING?! I was also still reeling from seeing that Pretty Rhythm arcade footage on the big screen earlier so I was like maybe—

Then it was like NOPE PriChan season 2!!! haha.

Don’t get me wrong, PriChan getting a season 2 is good. GREAT even. But it was kinda hard to get excited about it in that moment because basically it was exactly what I expected would happen for next year. I mean it’s kinda like well, yeah, of course. I would have been much more surprised if they were doing something different and for like THREE SECONDS I thought maybe they were. But y’know. Oh well. Viva PriChan. 

During this concert I thought about how far PriChan has come over the past year, and how I enjoyed the PriChan performances every bit as much as the PriPara ones. I don’t miss PriPara because, thanks to still ongoing stuff such as events like this, PriPara never really left. I’m looking forward to seeing where PriChan goes from here

So after the announcement section ended it was finally time for what we were all looking forward to. Or at least what I was looking forward to: The Pretty Rhythm girls!!

They came out dressed in their Pretty All Friends outfits and introduced themselves as Saints. They didn’t sing all together, but they did perform together so you could still say it was a legit Saints performance and also the first one of all time. Rumi Okubo has never performed as Mia before. She said in the pamphlet she was looking forward to shouting “MIA IS NUMBER ONE!” with everyone. And she did. A lot ahah. So basically they all sang their solos one by one while the other two were the backup dancers for whoever was singing. Heart Iro Tori Dream was a singalong, as it always is. I didn’t practice the lyrics beforehand but I didn’t need to aaaaaahhahaaaa! To think being able to sing in in the theater during Kira Kira Memorial Live was such a BIG DEAL earlier in the year. At that time I never dreamed at that time I’d be doing it with the real Naru months later.

After their solos they sang Make-It with SoLaMi Dressing just like in Prism Tours. 

Then came the finale.  All Idol Song Precious with the FULL CAST. This was the part which really got me straight in the heart. Precious is the finale song to Let’s Go PriParis and basically my favorite PriPara song/performance of all time. To think I would hear a version with SAINTS in it?! AND HIBIKI (who was the only idol absent at the time from the movie version) And WITH??!!

Basically I think I can be done with Pretty Series concerts forever now because nothing will ever get better than this.

My only regret was I didn’t know the lyrics. The second half of the song was a singalong and I tried to practice in between performances but it didn’t really work. So Precious is on my list of songs to learn for someday… maybe.

Thing is.

As good as a show the Pretty Series concerts are, the venues are always terrible. Everyone always stands and it’s hard to see. At least we had chairs this time to sit down during that one break (before I went to one which was standing room only and that was hell) but during the concert if you’re short, it’s tough luck. I could kinda see through peoples’ shoulders during the afternoon, but in the evening performance I could literally not see the stage at all. It was basically like being at a live viewing, except I paid x3 the price. I could only see the girls clearly when they were up on the carts, but the carts rarely came to the back. Even though all the tickets were the same price basically.  

So yeah, I came out of retirement to go to this one, and I probably won’t go to another one for a long time if ever. They announced this Friendship Tour thing with a lot of show dates coming up soon, but I don’t really care. I got enough prism radiance from this show to last me years.

…Is what I want to say…. But…………. 

Then a voice whispers in the wind……… An…. ju………………….

 Can I really live the rest of my life without ever hearing Fortune Carat live…..?

 I…. don…. ‘t……… kno…w….

Pretty All Friends Introduction, Chapters 1-3

Yaay! Although I hinted I wouldn’t translate this for a while, that changed when I realized two things: a.) I could copy-paste the text (makes the work a lot faster) and b.) The plot is like a terrible girls cartoon from the 80s (and I mean that in... THE BEST way). So I decided to just jump right in!

As of July 2018, I have translated all that has been posted. But it’s to be continued, so if more has been added let me know!

These stories are written to accompany the Pretty All Friends project which has been created to celebrate the upcoming 10th Anniversary of the Pretty Series. There is no actual anime series in the works that I know of currently, but merch and PriChan arcade game collaborations have happened so far. 

Also don’t be alarmed at the whole “Mascot Graveyard” thing, it’s a running joke from the series which has been around quite a while.

Introduction:

The Prism Stone Shop is a place filled to the brim with girls fashion, hopes, and dreams! You came for a visit, same as always, but something seems different this time... Oh yeah! Today’s the day when all the Prism Stone Shops from different worlds all become connected by a rainbow bridge! 

Aira, Mia, Naru, Laala, and Yui, the girls who all met one other after being guided by the rainbow bridge, heard this story from the shop’s Meganee:

“You are the chosen Pretty Friends! From now on I’d like you to travel by the rainbow bridge to all kinds of different worlds to gather sparkle and find friends while performing live shows! 

“And, I would like you to revive the All Friends Coord currently sleeping in the country of dance, fashion, and song: Pretty Prism Paradise!” 

Everyone was so excited to hear about the legendary coord. 

Based on Aira’s suggestion, they formed the Dream Team: Pretty All Friends! 

And, riding the NEW Prism Trailer Truck, the tour to bring sparkle and meet friends in all different worlds began! 

Chapter 1: The Lost Mascots

The first place our friends arrived at was the Mascot Graveyard. Upon seeing the gloomy mascots, Mia and Yui couldn’t help but grumble “What is this, there’s no sparkle at all!” and “What a Dreamin’ shame” ...  but they all saw something familiar to them... suddenly, they realized their own mascots were in the Mascot Graveyard! 

It turned out that, while trying to follow after everyone, their mascots had gotten lost and somehow ended up here of all places! Just being in the mascot graveyard seemed to rob them of all their sparkle, and doomed them to a gloomy fate. 

So, in order to raise everyone’s spirits, the All Friends decided to perform their first live show! The song was, of course, “You May Dream”! The mascots soon came back to their normal selves and decided to join the tour! And so, they were off to find the next sparkle! 

Chapter 2: Happy Lucky in the Aurora Country 

The second place our friends arrived at was the Aurora Country, a magical, spectacular world always shining with an aurora in the sky! 

“We can surely gather lots of sparkle in a place like this!” everyone agreed with great excitement. 

However, when inquiring at the local Prism Stone Shop about performing a live show:

“Soooorry! We’re all booked up! It’s not possible! It’s the system!” was all the Meganee said. 

“Are you our enemy?” “Rival?!” “The leader of a dark organization?!”  Mia, Laala, and Yui demanded to know. 

“I... I don’t think so... Let’s see what’s really going on here...” said Aira as she headed for the stage. 

They heard some familiar voices from the lively stage and found... none other than Aira’s friends and Mia’s senpai idols, Rhythm and Mion! The friends found that the two of them had come here just before them after crossing the rainbow bridge from a Prism Stone Shop themselves. The three reunited friends, Aira, Rhythm, and Mion rejoiced with a live show of “Hop! Step!! Jump!!!“ which was a great success! They were able to collect lots of sparkle and gather more friends at the same time! Happy Lucky! And so they were off to the next world!

Chapter 3: An Important Day for the Mascots

“Huh? The snacks are all gone!” said Naru with surprise as she opened the refrigerator. “I wonder if Mia ate them all...” she thought outloud to herself before noticing a trail of biscuits on the ground. She followed the biscuits which seemed to be guiding her to somewhere, where she found a small stage in the shade of a tree in the middle of the forest. The mascots, who’d taken all the food and sweets, were all gathered together. 

“Today is an important day-kuma! Failure is not an option-kuma!” 

“You’re the one who needs to buckle down and get some work done-cheer!” said Rabichi as she gave Kuma a good kick.  

Today was the special day the mascots dance the “Prism Paradise Bang Bang!” dance and strengthen their bond with each other. 

However, the mascots who could talk were all just fighting with one another, and the ones who couldn’t were just wandering around aimlessly while nothing was getting done.  Naru couldn’t stand to sit and watch sad scene. So she took the stage and shouted, “Everyone! Hold the hand of the friend next to you!” The mascots then all sang and danced to “Heart ♥ Iro ♥ Tori ♥ Dream” with Naru, which made everything very HappyNaru! Today lots of sparkle was found!

There is a line of merch called “Pretty All Friends” sold at Prism Stone shops which was put together to celebrate the upcoming anniversary of the series and it includes Aira, Naru, and Mia. They started with cosmetics (lip gloss, etc.), but now they are making keychains and mini towels and all sorts of things.

Pretty Rhythm: My☆Deco Rainbow Wedding Chapter 17+18 English Translation

Chapter 17: A Pop Test with a Testy Rhythm

Mia: You’re soooo lucky you got to face up against Serenon! I love their manzai~! You keep piling up experience, huh? Though, I was wondering… have you seen Rinne at all since that fashion show? She didn’t even enter the Gold Spiral Cup. I’ve seen her on TV, in magazines and in movies, but I can’t get her sad expression out of my mind… Whenever we come close to learning about Rinne’s secret, we end up back at square one!! What we know right now is… Rinne wants the Rainbow Wedding, and she’s forgotten something. But the thing I’m most concerned with is how she always looks really sad. She’s your rival in terms of getting the Rainbow Wedding, but she’s also a fellow idol. We can’t just leave her alone… And she looks her happiest when she gets to watch your shows, or when she gets to talk to you, Player. Maybe you’re not the only one who wants to save Rinne from her sorrowful heart!? ...Is what I want to say, but I still have no idea what I can do! It’s really pissing me off!!!

??? (Rizumu): Morni~ng!

Mia: Ahh!! Who’s there!? What kind of idiot goes around hugging people from behind!?

Rizumu: Ta-dah! It’s Rizumu!

Mia: Wha- Rizumu-san!! You scared the hell out of me!!

Rizumu: Sorry, sorry. You looked like your were having a bummer of a convo so I wanted to lighten the mood a bit! Ahahaha! Ooh? No way, are you Player? I totally know about you! Aira and Mion, hell even Serenon have told me all about you. You’re collecting the power of the seven coords to complete the Raingowdam…

Mia: It’s called the Rainbow Charm, Rizumu-san!

Rizumu: Yeah, that’s it! Ahaha, must’ve gotten a bit mixed up there!

Mia: Jeez… and people say that I should be a funny guy… I’m the straight man compared to Rizumu.

Rizumu: Aw, c’mon! Keep complimenting me and I’ll get flustered! Ahaha!

Mia: It wasn’t a compliment!!

Rizumu: Anyway, I was thinking of helping you get the power of the seven coords… Aira helped you before, right? By giving you a Coord Rank Test?

Mia: Oh, that makes sense! Rizumu’s a member of MARs too, so she can give these tests too! But… Rizumu’s sense of style is, uh… unique. Honestly… it’s a bit… weird…… Y’know, she wore a pumpkin mask, and she centred a coord around radish sprouts. What’ll you do? Are you really going to trust Rizumu enough to take her Coord Rank Test?

Choice: Of course! / I’m… a bit scared…

Mia: What do we do!? I wouldn’t even be able to look at you in whatever weird outfit you’d be forced to wear!

Rizumu: What are you two whispering about? We’re starting the Coord Rank Test now, hurry up!!

Mia: No!! Player’s being taken away! Well, looks like you can’t escape anymore, Player! Good luck!

Rizumu: I’m testing your pop coord rank! Bring me 10 pop My☆Deco stones! Once you do that, we’ll compete in a prism show! This test has a special edition prism show! We’ll be competing in an all-dance prism show. All-dance mode doesn’t have any jumps, so as the name suggests it’s a prism show that’s always in dance mode! Doesn’t it sound fun?? Just letting you know, my dancing skills are unbeatable! So, will we start the test? My spirit is fully charged!

Rizumu: Oka~y! That was such a poppy show~! Congrats, you’ve passed the pop Coord Rank Test!

Mia: Ah!! The Rainbow Charm…

Rizumu: I’m glad I could help. How was all-dance mode? Shows without jumps are good too once in a while! It’s perfect for when you just want to dance your heart out!

Mia: Thank you, Rizumu-san! This is great, Player! We only have… feminine and star left. It feels like we’re really close to finishing the Rainbow Charm! Though… does being close to getting the Rainbow Wedding also mean you’ll have to face off against Rinne? If only we could just get it over and done with!

Rizumu: Whenever you talk about this Rinne girl, you seem pretty testy, huh? Is Rinne your friend, Player? …...Looks like you can’t answer. But you’re interested in her? I’m sure you’ll eventually be able to become friends with her, since she makes you feel that way. I’ve been through a lot with Aira and Mion, too. We’ve fought a lot, but in the end our fights brought us all closer together, and gave us a deeper understanding of each other. And now we’re the best of friends!

Mia: But how do we become friends with Rinne…? It’s pretty hard to befriend someone you know nothing about…

Rizumu: It’ll be fine! We have prism shows after all, right? MARs became close through prism shows, we formed our bonds on the path to the Aurora Rising. You’re bonded to Rinne because you’re both after the Rainbow Wedding. Believe in your heart and work hard! I’ll definitely be cheering you on, Player!

Chapter 18: Aurora Wings

Mia: Rizumu has a really good point! Her advice has a way of worming itself into your heart! 'Bonds that form through prism shows’, huh~

Rizumu: Player and Rinne will definitely end up as close friends.

Aira: Rizumu-chaaan!

Mia: Grrr…!! That voice must be… Harune Aira!

Mion: Mion’s here too, you know.

Penguin-sensei: Me too!

Mia: Gah! Mion-san! ...and Penguin-sensei…

Mion: What do you mean by ‘gah’!?

Mia: Yikes. I feel another test coming~

Penguin-sensei: We won’t be giving you another Coord Rank Test. MARs have gathered here for something else… They have a special lesson for you, Player!

Mia: What kinda special lesson?

Penguin-sensei: The rainbow is not the only light that shines in the sky.

Mion: We want you and Rinne to create another light… MARs will tell you all about the light of the aurora!

Mia: The light of the aurora!? Wait, you can’t mean…

Aira: You’ve worked hard on lessons and prism shows up until now, Player. Your current self can definitely pull off the Aurora Rising!

Mia: You want Player to perform the legendary jump, Aurora Rising!?

Mion: It will be fine. We’ll all help out.

Aira: Wear the Gold Spiral Dress, and you’ll be able to perform the Aurora Rising! The light of the aurora is the light of dreams that brings the world together.

Rizumu: The colours of the aurora will give your heart power too. They’ll become the key to opening up Rinne’s sorrowful heart! Like, ‘that is it, the Aurora Rising!’ So, will you show the new light of the Aurora Rising to Rinne?

Choice: I want to show her / Can I really do it?

Mion: Nice prism! Your straightforward heart will definitely allow aurora wings to form.

Rizumu: It may seem impossible at first, but you still have to try! It’s better to try and fail than to not try at all! I’ll make a wish for the Aurora Rising to link Rinne and Player’s hearts!

Mion: It seems that Rinne is currently in Sweets Café. Let’s go there at once.

Rizumu: Whoop! Let’s goooo~!!

Mia: We’ve finally arrived, but is Rinne still even here?

Rinne: Player……

Mia: Rinne!?!?

Rinne: ………

Aira: Aw, don’t look so sad! We came here today to give you a present, Rinne.

Rinne: A present……?

Rinne: Happylucky…… for me?

Mion: Now, Player! It’s time!!!! Wear this dress!!!! And fly!! With aurora wings!!!!

Rinne: Amazing…… Amazing……. The aurora’s light… was beautiful…… It was shining in all the colours of the rainbow. It was as if a curtain was drawn over the night sky.

Aira: That was the light of Player-chan’s heart, Rinne-chan.

Rinne: The light of Player’s heart…

Mion: A girl’s heart is a prism, you know.

Mia: It is! When we experience lots of happy or sad moments, when we cry or laugh… our hearts spin round and round, changing colours and creating shining bright!! That’s why they’re so beautiful…

Rinne: But I… don’t know my true self. I’m empty…

Aira: It’s alright.

Rinne: Huh…?

Aira: Player-chan’s heart is overflowing with light.

Mia: Player could definitely My☆Deco your heart, Rinne.

Rizumu: That’s right! After all, you looked so happy during Player’s show! If you cry together and laugh together, if you have lots of experiences together… you’ll be able to see hearts with many more colours of light!

Mion: Split the happy times in half. Split the sad times in half, too… That’s what friendship is.

Rinne: Friendship… Player and I…

Aira: Now, join hands! Together with Rinne-chan!!!!

Rinne: Aurora…… RISING!!!!

Mia: The light of Rinne’s heart mixed with Player’s… is shining in the sky!

Rinne: Player… I… don’t know my true self. Where did I come from? What do I want to do? I don’t know that, either… Even so… Will you be my friend? ………...Thank you. Your heart is so warm. I want to make my heart shine like yours… no, I will make it shine!!!!

Mia: Ah! Rinne’s coord… changed again!

Rinne: What is this…?

Mion: The shining white light of a star. That’s the colour of Rinne’s heart!

Rinne: I’m not lost anymore, Player. My seven-hued heart, not being able to remember anything… Everything…

Aira: The power of on of the seven coords, star, seems to have returned to Rinne-chan.

Chapter 11: Aira’s Fashion Love Test?

Mia: Congraaats, Player!

Karin: After winning the Bronze Spiral Cup, you were able to win the Silver Spiral Cup too… That’s galactically amazing!

Mia: Keep going like this and you’ll fill up the Rainbow Charm in no time!

Ayami: That’s right! But how are you meant to collect the rest of the seven coord’s powers?

Mia: Well, you see...

Reina: Huh? Mia, don’t tell me you have some kind of amazing idea!?

Mia: I couldn’t think of one!!!

Karin: Your galactically random outbursts sure aren’t surprising anymore, huh?

Mia: Yeah. Hm, we need to think of something… Huh!?

??? (Aira): What’s up? Everyone’s gotten together and all.

Reina: Aira-san!!!

So-min: You’re that popular star, Rinne’s rival, right? We’re working hard doing lessons at Pretty Top to revolutionise our hearts. We cannot waste any of our lesson time, so if you want to do lessons with us… I would like you to prove your strength as a prism star!

Mia: So-min’s hated wasting time and effort for forever…

So-min: Of course I have! Well, I’m also interested in seeing if the rumours about Player were true… A-and is it so wrong for me to want to see their prism show!? Wah… WAAAAH…..

Penguin-sensei: Alright, if PURETTY lead the way, Player��s voice will also shine through. Perform many more shows and make your voice heard!

Mia: Doing a lesson with everyone sounds like so much fun!

Ayami: But Rinne-san’s always alone…

Reina: She doesn’t really need friends, she can use the power of the seven coords after all, right? Though that sounds pretty lonely…

Mia: Hm… Well, there’s no way of knowing how Rinne feels~

So-min: You’re wasting your energy worrying about this stuff.

Mia: I’m not wasting shit!! She’s just a really weird kid, I’m curious about her!

So-min: If you don’t know how she feels, just ask her!

Mia: Huh…??? Ask her???

So-min: Yeah, you’re wasting time thinking about it when you could easily just ask.

Mia: I see! God, So-min, sometimes you know just what to say!

So-min: What do you mean “sometimes”!? You’re one to talk!

Mia: Let’s go, Player!! You come too, Penguin-sensei!

Penguin-sensei: Huh?? Where are we going!?

Mia: We’re going to see Rinne! So-min’s right, if we don’t know what she thinks we should just ask her!

Reina: You don’t even know if she’ll actually answer your questions…

Mia: That’s fine, it’s not like we’ll find anything out unless we try anyway. Let’s ask Rinne about her true feelings! Kaboom!

Pretty Rhythm DMF 47

Huh this one doesn’t have a Prism Show. But the starlight conversations reminded me of a RPG party heading into their final battle :3

Kyoko announces to reporters at an airport that she hopes to put on Grateful Symphonia within the last selection (reference to arcade game updates I believe) in... Buenos Aires! There is a place known as legendary Goddess Stage.

So they all really go to Buenos Aires. Even Kyoko’s mother Kei and Yunsu (and Chae Kyong’s) mother Myong Ja. Mia and Hye In are practicing together. (It wasn’t totally clear to me from the last episode, but I guess they are both center.)

But just when Mia and Hye In promise to always be together, Michelle announces that once Grateful Symphonia is finished Puretty will return to Korea for real and make their debut there. Mia won’t accept it. She can’t handle the idea of not seeing Hye In every day anymore and begs Hye In not to leave. Hye In apologizes and Mie calls her a liar and runs off. “If Grateful Symphonia doesn’t happen then everyone can stay together!! RUN!!” 

So Min wants to just leave her, but Hye In says it wouldn’t be their Grateful Symphonia without Mia. All the girls leave except for So Min, and So Min gets a long impromptu lesson from LoveMix about how nothing you do for your friends is worthless and everything in life being a journey....blahblah something... these boys.... 

Chae Kyong manages to communicate with Spanish speaking locals just by turning her foreign accent up. Because she used her heart. Anime. 

Shi Yoon tries to lure Mia like a dog using melon bread. Yay. 

Jae Eun can taste Mia’s complex sadness. Reina is frustrated by Mia always being center when she does such selfish things. But at the same time she cannot imagine Grateful Symphonia without Mia’s brash personality encouraging her. Reina reveals that Jae Eun cannot actually taste emotions. She’s just good at reading people (of course). 

Mia’s plan is just to find a boat that says “Japan” and ride it home. Penguin-sensei and Yamada apparently swam to Buenos Aires where they try to talk some sense into Mia. It doesn’t get far but they stall her enough for everyone to find her. 

So Min encourages Hye In to tell Mia that their friendship is forever no matter what... but Hye In replies with a very mature and sobering speech about how her and Mia will gradually separate as they grow up... But! Because of that she wants to appreciate now and do the best show she can with her friends so that their hearts are one. They reunite and Mia apologizes to everyone for being scared to leave Hye In. Soon everyone realizes they were holding back and begins to cry as well. 

Later that night Sho and Yunsu talk about what it really means to be “together forever”. Yunsu says that may be a fantasy, but he doesn’t want girls to lose their radiant feelings or be afraid of chasing them. The two of them stare at each other for a while under a starry sky before Sho says he won’t be afraid anymore. He wants to hear Aira’s answer for him. Yunsu agrees.

Jun and Kyoko also have a starry night conversation. Kyoko reveals that she knows he was adopted apologizes for  treating him like her real little brother (??umm??doesitmatter??) and thanks him for supporting her. Jun says he has something he wants to talk about after Grateful Symphonia has finished. 

Myong Ja says to Kei that maybe if she had stayed with Kintaro he would have not have gotten corrupted, and the two of them could have been good friends... but...

Prizzmy and Puretty discuss how much they are pumped up for the show tomorrow and how much they have changed. They miss a shooting star (since So Min was crying too loudly) but Mia says it’s fine because they should all accomplish their goals on their own.

The next day Myong Ja sees someone mysterious in the crowd.

Sho and Yunsu present their latest design, a Symphonia tiara stone (inspired by the tiara Mia drew in the last episode) to the girls as they arrive at the stage. It’s on. 

Since the beginning of the show Mia and Hye In had their thing, as well as Chae Kyong and Ayami, Shi Yoon and Karin, Jae Eun and Reina were kinda paired off... but that leaves So Min by herself so that’s why she got paired with Itsuki and Yong Hwa a lot in this episode I guess. LoveMix have become such Gary Stu host boys though. I liked them for a while, but recently they literally just follow everyone around for the opportunity to give perfectly timed life lessons to poor lost maidens. Uggug.
