[UNTITLED #020]: How Our Team Learned to Never (EVER) Use Pneumatics
I guess the first thing we should've asked ourselves was if using pneumatics was necessary.
The year is 2022. A classroom is filled with nothing but a pneumatics kit (of questionable origin) and a dream. And ~45 students. They also had dreams. Also.
I remember when we started our air-pressure-gauge-reading-journey. The world was infused with the acoustic ambiance of a workshop with power. Now, I am an author who speaks (somewhat) for the team, but, if I were an author that spoke for myself, I might say something about how, while I personally didn't have much to do, I was fascinated just watching them work.
The design for the robot, a claw that would be pushed forth with a pneumatic piston, was almost entirely created by a few of the older students, which sucks because upperclassmen are always busy and they didn't have much help (quick parenthetical of appreciation for those that contributed that year). To be frank, no one really knew what they were doing.
A week or two until comp and our robot was but undone. The workshop was emptier in those days. Our main electrical guy had spent a few minutes making an entire table from scratch wood for some reason (to work on or practice driving with or something; my memory eludes me). Suddenly, we had something resembling a bot. I helped with bumpers.
Were we cramming? No, we were living
And to ourselves, we had to be forgiving
We had no choice
But to rely on a few senior boys
And hope they got the bot moving
Anyway, so we're at comp and we're having all sorts of issues. There are leaks and we have trouble getting past inspection, but if I remember correctly the piston might have worked once or twice. A super nice guy from another team spends like the whole day with us trying to get it working, which really showcased coopertition. Everyone in our few feet of pit is stressed and our president ran to best buy to get us a brand new light-up xbox controller. Eventually, we were able to compete. Our mechanism still wasn't great, so we slapped a dumbbell on the robot and played defense.
We didn't win, but we adapted, and the whole experience only made going to playoffs a year later that much sweeter. Also, we at least got to experiment with pneumatics. But pneumatics is hard guys. And also that game kinda sucked.
We learned a lesson that day. Air likes to be as free as a bird. We were not airbenders. We were but FRC lovers.
In all honestly, though, that year was probably an essential step in the progression of our team. What we lacked in time-management we made up for (further hindered) with ambition. Additionally, we really became comfortable stepping outside our comfort zone (you won't have trouble straying from the tried and true if all is tried and nothing is true). We used a somewhat original design, and I think at least a few students were invested in the outcome. And it was a good time.
#did I get this out of drafts just in case taylor swift looked at our blog and saw half of our posts were about a fort?#maybe#@taylorswift#@taylornation#it's so surreal thinking back to that whole year tho because the workshop looks completely different#no one really used it that much so people used it as storage#there is still a wall of air filters#also the event space they use for LVR has a dairy queen in it#also the tense in this post shifted like a million times#i was thinking about describing comp in more depth but honestly i feel like u just have to be there#the feeling in those events#especially when the game's good#but yk#robots#pneumatics#pneumatics do not#frc robotics#high school#frc#pneumatic#robotics#This DQ has nothing but ice cream ive been fueled on nothing but DQ vanilla ice cream cones this whole competition

Abrams Tanks May Have Some Problems in Ukraine - How Serious Are They? - Technology Org

Abrams Tanks May Have Some Problems in Ukraine - How Serious Are They? - Technology Org
The Armed Forces of Ukraine are using a bunch of different types of Western tanks. Those include German Leopard 1 and 2 tanks, British Challenger 2 and, of course, at least 31 M1A1 Abrams tanks. All of these tanks have certain peculiarities about them and crews have to be prepared for each of these types individually. However, the Abrams main battle tank may pose the most serious problems.
Ukraine absolutely needs main battle tanks. The more the better. And the more advanced the better. However, the West lived in peace for so long that the tank reserves are not that great. NATO countries don’t have that many tanks to spare actually.
On top of that, the choices of which tanks to supply need to be made in a smart way, because Ukraine does not have any experience with the Western-designed tanks, there is no servicing or ammo supply infrastructure there.
M1 Abrams tanks are special in many ways. They also require special care. Image credit: Oregon National Guard via Wikimedia
And now the Ukrainian Ground Forces have a mish-mash of tanks, which have their own peculiarities:
The Leopard 1A5 is not only the oldest in its architecture, but also has a rifled 105 mm gun. This means that it needs special ammunition, which is not common in NATO anymore.
The Leopard 2s are the most standard, but Ukraine is getting a bunch of different versions of this tank, including 2A4s, 2A5s, 2A5s (Stridsvagn 122) and 2A6s. There are differences between these versions that need to be learned in training.
The Challenger 2 is of the same era as the Leopard 2, but it uses a rifled 120 mm gun, which also required special ammunition.
Finally, the M1A1 Abrams can share ammo with the Leopard 2, but has a multi-fuel turbine engine, instead of a regular reciprocating engine with cylinders and pistons.
Abrams tanks can burn any fuel – diesel, petrol, vodka, doesn’t matter. They are powerful and resilient. However, these gas turbine engines do need a lot of care.
Forbes writes that despite the engines in the Abrams tanks costing an unbelievable amount of money, they can succumb to dust and debris if the crews don’t maintain the filters very well. This is something crews learn during long months of training, but the Ukrainian tankmen had to learn this very quickly.
If the tank filters are not cleaned every 12 hours or so, the damage can be so severe that the engine and possibly the transmission will need to be replaced. Obviously, in a battlefield that could bring the tank to a tragic ending.
How do you clean the filters? Ukrainian Abrams crews will have to rev the tank’s engine to redline twice a day to start the pulse-jet system and blow air through the filters clearing out the dust and debris.

Even with the filters being kept up to, the Arbams will cause some issues to the Ukrainian Ground Forces. These tanks use a lot of fuel and require deep maintenance, which will have to be performed in Poland. Getting them there will not be easy either, because the Abrams is rather heavy at over 62 tonnes.
However, the effectiveness of the main battle tank mostly depends on the tactics. And if the defenders of Ukraine manage to exploit the strong sides of the Abrams well, these tanks will do a lot of damage to the Russian invaders.

Maintaining the Heart of Your Porsche: A Comprehensive Guide to Engine Care
Do you know, the way your heart keeps you alive, the engine of your car also does the same. But do you take care of your car’s engine the way you take care of your heart? Stick to this article to attain some more knowledge regarding the engine care of your Porsche car.
Overview of an Engine
In simple words, the conversion of the heat energy produced by the ‘combustion of the fuel’ to mechanical energy for the movement of your car is the primary work of the engine. Nowadays, there are different types of engines being implemented in cars, but internal combustion engines are common among those.
Firstly, the air gets mixed up in the fuel and once the intake valve opens, the air-fuel mixture passes into the combustion chamber. The pressurization of the air-fuel mixture inside the intake valve makes it more combustible.
Then the spark plugs fire the air-fuel mixture followed by a mini explosion inside the engine. After the explosion the exhaust valve opens and the fumes are pushed out through the exhaust valve. These processes occur continuously in different cylinders in a proper sequence leading to the ignition of the Porsche car.
The components of the engine involved in the ignition of your car are valves, spark plugs, fuel injectors, cylinders, pistons, crankshaft camshaft, etc.
Signs of defective Porsche Car Engine
Overheating
Loss in power
Unusual noises
Excess vibrations
Leakage of different fluid
Blinking engine lights
Evacuation of fumes
Reduced mileage
Engine stalling
Degrading fuel economy
Rough idle
If your engine is experiencing any of the above signs, then your engine is in danger. You need to take essential steps so that without failing, it would be saved by taking proper actions. You should immediately consult your mechanic and ask him to first troubleshoot the issues correctly. Then provide the Porsche’s manual to the mechanic for a better understanding of your Porsche car engine’s structure. The issues can either be sorted by repairing the particular part of the engine or by replacing it.
How to take care of your Porsche car Engine
If you will properly take care of your Porsche car as a family member then the above situations will never arise. Mentioning below a few maintenance tips:
Maintaining the temperature of the engine is very necessary. So, you should regularly check the water pump, coolant, radiator, and thermostat to avoid over heating the engine. You can use 50 % coolant and 50 % distilled water to keep your engine healthy.
As the engine oil lubricates all the components present inside the engine, it absorbs all the dirt and becomes unclean. So, check the engine oil every month and change if it is converting from amber color to black color.
Before going for a drive always check whether the garage has any oily spots on the ground or not, so that you will be able to know whether there is a leakage or not. Sometimes engine oil, brake oil, hydraulic steering fluid, coolant, etc used to leak due to a faulty engine.
If the dashboard light or head lights of your car flicker or blink then immediately get the light inspected by the local mechanic.
Just like human lungs, if your Porsche car’s air filter is blocked by too much dirt then the mileage will degrade gradually. Just get the air filter clean so that your car can breathe properly.
If your fuel filter is clogged due to poor fuel quality, then your engine may misfire. So, always fill petrol or diesel of good quality.
Do not drive at high speed until and unless there is something urgent. Moderate speed is good for the engine’s health as well as reduces the chance of deadly accidents.
You must visit the service center once every month to wash your car and for the whole-body check-up.
Conclusion
Hopefully after reading this article, you may have some basic knowledge regarding how the engine works, what can be the defects, how to fix the defects, and how to avoid converting a new healthy engine to a faulty one. Always keep your luxury Porsche car fit and fine to have a pleasurable ride with your loved ones.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Lube Oil Filter Element - Filterselementsstrainers
The Guardians of Engine Cleanliness: A Look at Lube Oil Filter Elements
Filterselementsstrainers are the unsung heroes Lube Oil Filters Elements of the automotive world. These small, unassuming components play a vital role in keeping engines clean and running smoothly. By filtering out contaminants like dirt, debris, and metal shavings, they prevent premature wear and tear, extending the life of your engine and saving you money on repairs.
The Different Types of Lube Oil Filter Elements
There are two main types of lube oil filter elements: full-flow and bypass. Full-flow elements filter all of the oil circulating through the engine, while bypass elements only filter a portion of the oil. Bypass elements are typically used in conjunction with full-flow elements to provide дополнительная защита.
The filter media is typically made from paper, cellulose, or synthetic materials. As oil flows through the element, the contaminants are trapped in the media, while the clean oil flows on to the engine.
Bypass elements are typically smaller and simpler than full-flow elements. They состоят из a spring-loaded valve that opens when the oil pressure reaches a certain level. When the valve opens, a portion of the unfiltered oil bypasses the filter element and flows directly to the engine. This helps to protect the engine from damage in the event that the filter element becomes clogged.
Choosing the Right Lube Oil Filter Element
You can choose will depend on a number of factors, including the make and model of your engine, your driving conditions, and your budget. It is important to consult your owner's manual or a qualified mechanic to determine the correct filter element for your vehicle.
Once you have selected the right element, it is important to change it regularly. The frequency with which you need to change your filter element will depend on your driving habits and the рекомендации from your vehicle's manufacturer. Typically, it is a good idea to change your filter element every time you change your oil.

"the first casualty, when war comes, is truth"
i wish i wasn't writing this.
i wish i didn't have to caveat this whole statement with "by the way, i strongly condemn the killing of innocent civilians in any circumstance whatsoever" because i am a muslim and obviously every muslim voice represents all 1.8 billion of us, right? but your faves can go on instagram and loudly proclaim there is no two sides to this - i stand with the apartheid state bombing and starving children! with no consequences whatsoever. right.
i wish i didn't have to filter every bit of information i saw because of rampant lies and misinformation boosted across social media, especially when it shrouds the actual atrocities happening. it's still unconfirmed whether 40 babies were murdered by hamas militants - if true, it is an awful, awful act done by the lowest of the low. but as we speak, 447 children have been confirmed to be killed - murdered - in gaza just in the last few days.
i wish i didn't see videos of those murders. i wish i could wipe away the horrific wailing of a father as he clawed his daughter's lifeless body out of rubble, falling to his knees as he cried for her to wake. i wish i didn't see mothers clutching small, bloodied bundles in their hands, screaming and screaming and screaming. i wish i could forget that i have been seeing iterations of these videos coming out of palestine from 2021, 2014, 2009, 2006 - oh, basically anytime israel decided to launch an offensive on gaza.
i wish children didn't make up 47% of gaza's 2 million population, of which 4 out of 5 were living with PTSD and depression as per a report from last year (aka before this latest shitstorm started), because living in an open air prison under constant threat of bombing really helps make those childhood memories extra special. i wish these children were considered as human as those across the border, their lives as important and meaningful.
i wish that literal war crimes were not taking place in gaza right now. this includes the war crimes by hamas of taking innocent hostages - hamas, may i remind the reader, is a palestinian terrorist organisation but not all palestinians are hamas - and also the war crimes of the israeli government by literally ordering a siege of gaza with "no electricity, no food, and no fuel." this is to ensure that the children who aren't already dead are well on their way, i guess.
i wish we weren't watching an ethnic cleansing literally taking place in front of our eyes.
i wish i didn't feel so helpless. i wish i could console my friends who are on the daily losing multitudes of relatives, and who now have no way of finding out who else they've lost until the electricity comes back on. i wish my words didn't feel so hollow.
i wish i could wave a palestinian flag in solidarity but i may get arrested for it here, in the uk, so better not.
i wish. i wish. i wish.

darling, won’t you take me home?

warnings: reader has a mild cold, but nothing much else (lmk if I missed anything)

You wake to soft light filtering in through the white curtains of your bedroom and the warm weight of your lover’s arm across your waist. The quiet snores echoing in the air and the soothing rise and fall of his chest against your back would usually be enough to lull you into a gentle morning sleep. But usually you can breathe out of both sides of your nose. And you usually don’t feel like there’s sandpaper in your throat. And your body doesn’t usually feel this heavy.
Goddamn it–you’re sick.
You feel a sneeze coming on and try to stifle it, to keep it locked tight in your lungs so you won’t wake the love of your life from the rare bit of peace and quiet he gets. You make no noise, but the shaking of your body stirs him anyway. Damn vigilantes and their preternatural awareness. He hums lazily as he pulls you further into his chest. You think he might be able to doze back off and you’re glad for it. Then your hopes are dashed. One, two, three sneezes wrack your body in succession and you are finally forced to admit defeat.
“Are you sneezing?” Jason asks, groggy but inquiring.
“…no.”
You don’t even know why you tried to lie to him. You’re a bad liar in most cases, and an absolutely abysmal liar when it comes to Jason. He simply sighs and you’d bet twenty dollars that he’s rolling those pretty seafoam eyes of his. He easily turns you in his arms so that you’re facing him. Great, now you really won’t be able to lie to him.
“I told ya that you were gettin’ sick,” he scolds gently.
“‘M not sick!”
He did. And you are.
“Then why do you sound like the Swedish Chef from the Muppets?”
“Oh, fuck you!”
He tries to keep his face serious, but soon the facade cracks and he lets out a deep belly laugh as you glare at him. You push yourself out of his arms and make it as far as the edge of the bed before he’s pulling you back to him again.
“Aw, c’mon, ma. Don’t be mad. You are sick. Just admit it,” he says, voice kind as he runs his hand up and down your spine.
“Okay. Fine. Whatever,” you mumble, your words trailing off unintelligibly.
Jason doesn’t miss it. He never does. Fucking vigilantes and their fine tuned hearing.
“What was that?” he smirks.
You whisper it again, quiet as a mouse. He shakes his head. You smack him in the chest.
“Ah ah, I wanna hear it,” he laughs.
“I said you were right! There! You happy now?” you pout, burying your head in his chest.
You can feel the giggles travel through his body and find it impossible to fight the smile it brings to your face, even if your head feels foggier than Gotham after a heavy rain. You squeeze him tight, a sudden aggressive love for him that you just need to let out. It does nothing to his strong frame. He just squeezes you back, then manhandles your legs around his waist and your arms around his neck. He rises from your bed like you weigh nothing to him, hefting you into the air so that you’re better positioned.
“C’mon, we’re makin’ soup.”
One thing about Jason Todd is that he’s an amazing cook. He didn’t cook much for himself before he met you. He’s told you he didn’t see any point when cheap takeout would fuel his body just fine for whatever fight was inevitably coming for him. But now he has both the reason and the time to care. And he cares. So much.
You can see it in the way he sets the chicken to bake while he tells you about the new book he got from the bookstore down the block. You can see it in the way his skilled hands, calloused and bruised, slice the carrots razor thin because he knows you hate the crunch of them. You can see it in the barely noticeable look of pride on his face as all the ingredients simmer in the big metal pot, giving your shared home a warm aroma of comfort. You can see it in the fact that everything he needed for this was already in your kitchen, in the fact that none of it was there when you fell asleep last night while he was on patrol. Jason cares. He cares from the tip of the stubborn curl that sticks up on the top of his head to the soles of his feet that guide you in a slow waltz around the kitchen.
“I know you probably aren’t too hungry, but I need you to try to eat at least one bowl for me,” he says in his gentlest negotiation voice as he puts a bowl of chicken noodle soup on the counter.
You nod your head that’s tucked against his chest, sniffling as you feel your nose start to run. Without missing a beat, Jason pulls a tissue from the pocket of his pajama pants and hands it to you.
“And you’re takin’ cold medicine the second you get some food in you.”
He’s not asking anymore, just stating facts.
“Gonna stay up all night watching me too?” you ask teasingly.
“I might,” he retorts.
“I love you too, Jay.”
He goes rigid momentarily before he relaxes against you. Then a soft smile breaks out on his face. He chuckles and shakes his head, turning his face away from you. But you can be observant too. You don’t miss the way pink dusts his cheeks and, oh, he looks so pretty like this. You tell him as much just to watch the soft pink turn to vibrant red.
“Shut up and eat your soup.”
One bowl of soup and a disgusting shot of cold medicine later, you find yourself wrapped in the arms of your lover as you both lounge on the couch. Jason reads the new book he was telling you about as you listen to music, dozing in and out of consciousness. It’s not your fault he makes such a great pillow; his large body is warm and soft as he lies relaxed on your sofa. Every now and then, especially when he thinks you’ve fallen into a light sleep, he’ll place a featherlight kiss on the top of your head.
You may not be a vigilante or The World’s Greatest Detective, but you can put all the pieces of the day together well enough. Carrying you out of bed, making you soup, letting you rest on him, the soft kisses and touches he flutters over your skin; it’s all his way of saying he loves you when the words themselves are simply too much or not enough. But the words are enough for you. You swear that you’ll go to your grave finding all the prettiest ways to tell him just how much you love him. Because you do.
And maybe it’s the homemade soup settled in your belly, or the afternoon sunlight shining through the window, or the warmth of the man you love beneath you, but you soon find yourself lulled into a peaceful sleep that feels just like home.
