Black Artists Matter: The Resurrection of the Harlem Arts Festival, 1969
Black Artists Matter: The Resurrection of the Harlem Arts Festival, 1969
One of the undeniable positive effects of the Black Lives Matter movement is exemplified in this amazing release. The Harlem Arts Festival, which ran from June 29 to August 24, 1969 (on Sundays at 3 PM) featured some profoundly important musicians (only one of whom went on to play at the fabled “Woodstock Festival” which ran from August 15-18, 1969 in Bethel, New York). This festival which was…

Live Picks: 9/27
Pallbearer
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Avoid the rain and go see some hip hop or country!
Little Brother, Metro
May The Lord Watch is a triumph not just as one of the best Little Brother records to date, but as the rare record whose quality transcends its unlikely hype. The hip hop group’s first release since 2010 has quite the backstory. Royce da 5′’9 missed his flight and couldn’t perform at last year’s Art of Cool Festival in Durham, so the trio of Phonte, Big Pooh, and 9th Wonder spontaneously gave a performance. That compelled them to get back together; eventually, creative differences led to 9th Wonder’s departure, and an album that was originally supposed to be titled Homecoming changed because of the emergence of Beyonce’s live album and Netflix film. The now duo announced in May that they’d be releasing new music, but it wasn’t until a day before what was now titled May The Lord Watch came out that it was formally announced. How did everyone involved keep it so secret? Apparently, most of them didn’t even know what they were contributing to.
In this day and age, the old-school means by which May The Lord Watch was created is a marvel, so the fact that the album outshines its context is nothing short of a miracle. It has the feel of not only a classic Little Brother album but an Aughts hip hop masterpiece, filled with wordplay and double meanings, sparkling, soulful production, and skits that are actually funny. No wonder Phonte compares rapping to riding a bike on opener “The Feel”: He may not have done it in a while, but he certainly picked right back up where he left. Almost ten years later, the duo reflect on their age and how they’ve made ends meet over the years and now. “Doin’ Uber pickups, they don’t recognize the face / And that’s bittersweet,” Big Pooh raps on “Right on Time” over a funky, warbling synth beat. On “Sittin Alone”, Phonte wholesomely raps about rather being at home watching TV than at the club: “At 35, the club’s a different kinda torment / Pretend to be excited, watchin’ bitches Diddy Bop / When you would rather be at home watchin’ Flip or Flop.” On the wonderful “Picture This”, over stunning production from Black Milk, Pooh raps, “I needed shelter and I couldn’t find the antidote / So God gave me the words to let me Penicillin;” the way he pronounces “Penicillin” sounds like “pen the ceiling,” thankful his lyric writing abilities allowed him financial flexibility.
And how about those skits? Many take place in the fictional television network UBN, first introduced on their 2005 classic The Minstrel Show. On “A Word From the President”, it’s revealed that Phonte alter ego Percy Morales has been killed, a reference to how Phife Dawg’s death reunited Phonte and Pooh. “Inside The Producer’s Studio” is a James Lipton parody, the Lipton role played by Questlove, talking to Roy Lee, another Phonte alter ego (of a producer who is not very good). “Dyana Change My Life” is an obvious parody of Oprah Network’s Iyanla: Fix My Life, with a hilariously harsh host (“You are a vile, toxic, gutter-bucket, slum-dunky”). And “N**gas Hollering” features none other than sportswriter Jemele Hill arguing with the duo about the greatest basketball player ever.
The skits play a larger role than providing levity, though. In context of “Black Magic (Make It Better)”, they serve to highlight real examples of black excellence. That track, which sees Phonte and Pooh trading bars about being black and amazing, is the centerpiece of May The Lord Watch. “Black skin, black faces, black people make black magic / So pay me every fuckin' dime and add taxes / Cop a feel in a room full of brass tactics,” raps Phonte, able to come out on top when the system’s against him, just like this album and this duo itself.
Album score: 8.0/10

Tonight’s show is a Sean Healy Presents event.
Caroline Spence, Thalia Hall
Back in May, we interviewed country singer-songwriter Caroline Spence about her great new album Mint Condition, which came out earlier this year. Expect to hear many of those songs tonight at Thalia Hall in an opening set.
Indie folk duo Penny & Sparrow headline.
YOB & Pallbearer, Revolution Oktoberfest
Here at SILY, we’ve covered Eugene, Oregan doom metal band YOB plenty and will recommend their live shows to the end of time. Their latest album Our Raw Heart was an emotional masterpiece and one of our favorite records of last year. Earlier this year, they released an Amoeba Green Room session where they perform Heart’s title track and a couple The Great Cessation standouts. They’re an amazing band.
Since we last previewed Arkansas doom metal band Pallbearer, they’ve been busy ramping up for their as-yet-unannounced fourth album, for which they’ve signed to Nuclear Blast. Most prominently, they released a single, “Atlantis” b/w “Thorns (Live)”, as part of the Sub Pop Singles Club. They also celebrated their 2012 debut Sorrow and Extinction by playing it in full for a couple hometown shows and released a beer with Lost Forty Brewing.
Local doom favorites Bongripper & Rezn also play for Revolution Brewing’s decidedly metal night of their Oktoberfest celebration.
Empress Of, Aragon
When we last previewed an Empress Of show, we wrote that her latest album Us “certainly has some bangers but is more generic than her debut.” A year removed from it, expect her to play from both records, her early singles, and her Blood Orange feature “Best To You” in a short opening set.
Pop singer-songwriter and musician Maggie Rogers headlines.

Soul Review - The Magic of Finding Your Purpose Comes to Life in Pixar's Latest
Pixar's Soul eloquently tells a story about the soul's purpose and the studios' first Black lead in Jamie Foxx. Stop reading this and watch it on #Disney+.

I actually thought ‘Soul’ was already available! Did it pop in the cinema first...then to Disney+?
(If it hasn’t....it’s a good strategy to get some analytics on how many subscribers end up adding the film to their watch list...and....visiting the page before it’s release)
PS: I’m so glad I live in the future!
PPS: According to IMDB it hasn’t been released anywhere! So that means...the premier would be on Disney+!
PPPS: Oh....my....goodness!!!! Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are scoring a Pixar film!??? No....way....No way....excitement levels....have increased.....300%!!!!
