it'll be our little secret. her father said, putting a finger to his lips. mr. mellark had been providing lunch to the coal miners under his wife's nose for years. anisette joined in on the venture during her last year of school; she'd only accompany him on weekends then but after graduation, she joined him daily. the pair arrive midday with canvas bags bursting with simple sandwiches and assorted treats just as the workers emerge from mines. the baker and his daughter stick out like a duo of sore thumbs with their blonde hair, blue eyes and clean clothes. most of the miners are receptive to the mellark's generosity though, there are quite a few who keep to themselves understandably wary of the merchant class. anisette always thought it was unfair how folks in the seam lived or anyone in the districts for that matter. although the last time she expressed any distaste for the capitol, her mother slapped her so hard across the face her cheek was red for a week.

their usuals shuffle into two lines. the older crowd go to her father while the younger workers gravitate toward anisette. she recognizes most faces from her school days or they'd at least know her brothers. as her line thins out, she notices a boy she hadn't seen before hanging towards the back. he was incredibly striking with his handsome face, grey eyes, long jet black hair and rich olive skin. he also stands out quite literally, cutting a figure so muscular and tall that anisette has to look up to greet him as he approaches. " hi, honey. " her trademark greeting strangely sets her heart aflutter. " i've got plenty left. " she feels obligated to reassure him given his spot at the back of her line. her hand disappears into the bag over her shoulder momentarily before it reappears with a sandwich neatly wrapped in white paper. " these are my father's specialty. " she reaches into the bag once more, this time producing a smaller package, this one is tied with a bow of twine. " and these are mine. ——- they're goat cheese and apple tarts. " anisette hands him the complete lunch with a smile. " i hope you enjoy it, honey. " much to her embarrassment, she could feel a blush creeping up her neck and settle in her cheeks.

" i know you. " she remarked softly. " i — i mean, i recognize you from school. we were in the same class but i remember you graduated early. that means you're really smart, doesn't it ? "

Living in Barbieland (childhood girlhood) but then suddenly you're all grown up in the real world subject to scrutiny and sexualisation (the guy slapping Barbie's ass) and feeling like existing is a crime?

Being forced by adult men into a box (which leads to the not like other girls syndrome) and exploring the 'real world' (being forced to grow up too quickly) while fighting the realisation that maybe the world sucks and being a woman is so difficult while hoping with all your heart that it's not always going to be this way.

Losing touch with the very things that made you happy because they're considered immature and girly? (The group of teens that said they hadn't played with Barbies since they were five.)

Older women telling you that you have to learn the truth about the world and that you can never have your old life back (Kate Mckinnon's Barbie) despite it being the only thing you yearn for, but also older women being a bright spot and support (the old woman on the bench) in the endless slough of life.
