New Exhibit: The Art of Organizing in Latinx Milwaukee

UWM Archives is celebrating Latine Heritage Month with a new pop-up exhibit: “The Art of Organizing in Latinx Milwaukee.”

Featuring posters, photos, illustrations, and more, the exhibit highlights the range and dynamism of Latinx organizing in Milwaukee since the 1960s. Drawing especially on posters from the important local immigrant and workers’ rights organization Voces de la Frontera, the exhibit explores how Latinx organizers have developed a distinctive visual culture of protest as a key mode of expression for the movement’s politics and vision. A selection of historic film footage drawn from the WTMJ News Archive also dramatizes how the contemporary work of Voces organizers sits within a longer tradition of Latinx organizing.

Pictured here are three selections from the Voces de la Frontera Records (UWM Mss 356) featured in the exhibit, including poster prints by Favianna Rodriguez and John Fleissner, and a photograph captioned “Mother, Child, Labor Law.” We’ll continue to feature highlights from the exhibit as we move through the month.

There was an explosion of visual images documenting plants and animals from the “New World” that were being introduced to Europe for the first time. Obviously the Indigenous peoples of these regions hold extensive knowledge of their natural environment, as well as their own religious and cultural importance ascribed to plants and animals. This was often disregarded or misunderstood by European colonists who placed a lot of value on the economic and medicinal uses of the “new” flora and fauna they were “discovering.”  

Today we are looking at a book from our sibling department, the American Geographical Society Library, which holds lots of material about European exploration and colonization. The book is De Indiae utriusque re naturali et medica libri quatuordecim by Dutch physician and naturalist Willem Piso, published in Amsterdam in 1658 by the House of Elzevir. It is the second edition of Historia Naturalis Brasiliae published in 1648, written by Willem Piso and Georg Marcgraf, with contributions from Johannes de Laet. Historia Naturalis Brasiliae is considered the first comprehensive work on the natural history of Brazil.

In the 17th century the Dutch West India Company took over the northeastern coast of Brazil from the Portuguese and established the colony of New Holland, or Dutch Brazil between 1630-1654. The region was governed by Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen from 1637-1643 who took naturalists and artists with him to South America to document the flora and fauna of the region. These drawings were the some of the first images created by Europeans from personal observation of Brazilian nature. Historia Naturalis Brasiliae opens with Willem Piso’s medical and botanical investigations and includes information about venomous animals. The images in the book are based on the drawings Georg Marcgraf and there are over 500 woodcuts in the book. The frontispiece of De Indiae utriusque re naturali et medica libri quatuordecim depicts a lush forest of plants and animals and two men standing on either side, seemingly representing both the West and East Indies. The original title page for Historia Naturalis Brasiliae depicts an Indigenous man and woman as what Daniela Bleichmar calls the “New World Adam and Eve” in Visual Voyages: Images of Latin American Nature from Columbus to Darwin.
