Ramadan Mubarak!
Today marks the first day of Ramadan, which commemorates the Prophet Muhammed’s first revelation. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which is based on lunar cycles and so will last from the first evening of a crescent moon sighting until the next. Ramadan is honored through fasting, prayer, reflection, charity, and community!
In celebration, we are featuring photographs of mosques from around the world, including Turkey, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Thailand, Nigeria, and Malaysia! (take a look at the image captions, which identify the mosques and more precise locations)
The images above come from a number of digital collections (Cities Around the World, AGSL Digital Photo Archive - Asia and Middle East, AGSL Digital Photo Archive - Africa) and were digitized from photographs and safety film negatives from in the Edna Schaus Sorensen and Clarence W. Sorensen Collection, the Harrison Forman Collection, and the Robert L. Pendleton Collection held by our sibling Distinctive Collections unit, the American Geographical Society Library, which we highlighted in a reblog yesterday.
مبارك عليكم الشهر
