The Cask of Amontillado, “The Lottery”, “A Rose for Emily”, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and “The Minister's Black Veil”
“The more one analyses people, the more all reasons for analysis disappear. Sooner or later, one comes to that dreadful universal thing called human nature," says Oscar Wilde, then “Everyone is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody.” Mark Twain adds with these words. Discovering the dark side of human nature, as famous thinkers have said, is not that difficult. If he is stubborn for his sake, mankind will not be ashamed to show his dark side. We can clearly comprehend this dark side of humanity that is meant to be told in short stories like “The Cask of Amontillado”, “The Lottery”, “A Rose for Emily”, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and “The Minister's Black Veil”.
In the short story “The Cask of Amontillado”, Edgar Allan Poe talks about Montresor's vengeful feeling for the Fortunato. In this story, he deals with vindictiveness. Here he describes the vindictiveness and ego of human nature that arises from opposite emotions such as love and hate. Again, like vindictiveness, hate drags people to the edge of the abyss. It is an emotion, the more one hates a person, the more his heart is resentful. Love sometimes symbolizes the dark side of human nature because sometimes obsessive love forces a person to do all kinds of evil and in this case disastrous things can happen. Despite the fact that her name means "the lucky one" in Italian, Fortunato meets an unlucky end as the victim of Montresor's vengeance. In the short story "The Lottery", we see the danger of blindly adhering to tradition, that is, bigotry. This is another dark side of humanity. If a person only sees in front of him and does not look around, but plugs his ears, this is about his blind attachment to something and often does not end well. Villagers punish someone at random, and the victim is condemned for no other offense than drawing the wrong piece of paper from a box. Another side that makes human nature look bad this time is tradition is against change and we realize this in the story “A Rose for Emily”. Emily herself is a tradition, remaining consistent throughout time despite the various changes in her town. In many respects, it was a mixed blessing. It reflects traditions that people wish to maintain and revere as a living monument to the past; nevertheless, it is also a burden and is entirely cut off from the outside world, nursing idiosyncrasies that others may not comprehend. We have always argued that unpleasant feelings are the dark side, but can goodness be toxic at times? The story of A Good Man is Hard to Find can be a good example of this. God has the capacity to admit even terrible people to paradise, which he does by bestowing grace on them. Grandma might be a candidate for grace. He lies to his grandkids, manipulates his son, and continuously harps on the past's present and his superiority's inadequacies. She doesn't recognize herself and appears to be ignorant of her surroundings. The grandmother, confident in her own moral superiority, feels she is the appropriate person to assess the well-being of others, as well as the correct person to educate others on how to conduct their life. He does, however, have an intrinsic moral weakness. And to talk about our latest story, we examine the seemingly harmless but rather harmful aspects of humanity. These are prejudice and hypocrisy. We see them in the foreground in the story "The Minister's Black Veil". The irony is that the villagers' trial of Mr. Hooper eventually proven hypocritical. After chatting and speculating about the choice to wear the veil, the villagers, thinking that "his conscience tormented him for a crime too horrible to be entirely covered," learn that the veil also symbolizes a crime for which they are also responsible. The veil, as Mr. Hooper stated on his deathbed, signifies concealment, one's "most heart" inclination to protect. In his farewell address, he furiously criticizes his treatment, saying, "Why do you shudder at me?... tremble at each other too."

Not very happy with the previous color palette, so I changed it to a more ominous one. Obviously she’s looking at somewhere else. “Why you’re one of my babies. You’re one of my own children!” She reaches out and touched him on the shoulder. The Misfit sprang back as if a snake had bitten him and shot her three times through the chest. From Flannery O’Connor’s novel A Good Man Is Hard to Find. #flanneryoconnor #agoodmanishardtofind . . . . . . . .#gothic #lightandshadow #misfit #oldlady #murder #killer #pray #mfa_ilp #micamade #illustration #illustrationartist #digitalpainting #digitalillustration #digitalart #artoftheday #americanillustration

“It's easier to bleed than sweat, Mr. Motes.” ―Flannery O'Connor, Wise Blood . . • Flannery will always hold a special place in my heart. Going to college at her alma mater, in her hometown of Milledgeville, GA, was a great experience. She is celebrated and her farm is now a museum. I hear rumors that #AGoodManisHardtoFind is being made into a movie...it's one of my favorite short stories. 🖤🖤🖤 . . • Day 4// Adapted! They're making this into a movie/show! A one-legged atheist and a fake bible salesman walk into a barn—stop me if you’ve heard this one. 📖 On August 3, 1964, Flannery O’Connor, one of the greatest short story writers of American literature, died at age 39 due to complications from lupus and a recent surgery. She had been diagnosed with lupus twelve years prior, and in addition to living seven years longer than doctors predicted, wrote more than two dozen short stories, two novels, and made over sixty appearances to give lectures or read her work. 📖📖📖📖📖 “You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you odd.” ― Flannery O'Connor 📕📗📘📙📕📗📘📙 #gasstationburrito #books #bookstagram #bookish #bookworm #booknerd #bookaholic #booklove #bookquotes #bookishfeatures #authorquotes #quotes #bookfeaturepage #bookishfeatures #librarian_of_gram #bookaholic #Instabooks #instabook #instareads #igreads #igbooks #booksofinstagram #Bookporn #flanneryoconnor #agoodmanishardtofind #goodcountrypeople #wiseblood #theviolentbearitaway #everythingthatrisesmustconverge #shortstory #lupus #georgia #americanauthors #diedonthisday #onthisday #august3 #1964 #andalusia #milledgeville (at Milledgeville, Georgia)

A bad Woman is Hard to Find - Especially if she stays at home
THE GRANDMOTHER didn't want to go to Florida. She wanted to go visit people in east Tennessee and was trying to convince her son, Bailey to go there instead. “Do you even read the newspaper, Bailey? There is a murdering convict, the Misfit they call him, on the loose in Florida. Now why would you ever want to go anywhere near that God-forsaken place?” she said. “Grandma, you are being paranoid,” said Bailey, “we are going to Florida whether you like it or not.”
“Everyone has been to Florida before” argued the grandma, “East Tennessee is beautiful this time of year and we owe it to the children to show them new parts of the world.” John Wesley, one of the children, intervened and said “Well why don’t you just stay home then? You won’t be any fun on the trip anyways.”
“Maybe I won’t” scoffed the Grandmother as she stormed out of the room.
“What a drama queen.” Said June Star, one of the little girls of the family.
The next day, everyone was packed in the car early in the morning… except for the grandmother. John Wesley, realizing that he had hurt his grandma’s feelings from the night before, runs inside to go find out where she is. He bursts into the grandma’s room to find her sleeping in her bed, with her cat, Pitty Sing, at the base of the bed with no suitcase in sight.
“Grandma, wake up! We were supposed to leave thirty minutes ago” exclaims John.
“I don’t feel like going anymore”
“I am sorry for what I said yesterday, I really didn’t mean it”
“I know you didn’t sweetie, but I decided that it is best if I don’t go. I can’t leave Pitty Sing behind and you know that Bailey hates when I bring the cat to the motel.”
John Wesley sighs and tells Grandma to get some rest, and apologizes again if he was the reason why she decided not to go.
The family gets on the road without grandma and has a great time. The family stops at a restaurant called the Tower on the way down to Florida, and has a wonderful meal while talking to the owner Sammy Butts. Sammy Butts goes on complaining on how he let some men buy gasoline from his store on credit, but the family blows it off and thanks Sammy for the meal and gets back on the road. The family’s GPS takes them an odd route on some back-country dirt roads, but other than passing an old beat-up Chrysler the drive was quite uneventful.
Once the family got to Florida, they checked into the motel and got on their bathing suits – ready to go play on the beach. The family had a lovely, relaxing vacation for the next week, and read in the newspaper that the Misfit had even been detained since their stay!
“Grandma always did worry too much” said Bailey as he reclined his chair in the sand on the beach drinking an ice cold Pabst Blue Ribbon.
