Wilkie Collins - what can I say? I’m absolutely flabbergasted that I’ve never read any of his work before, I’ve clearly been missing out. The Woman In White is described as the first and most influential novel in the Victorian genre to combine Gothic horror with psychological realism and it does it perfectly. This is the story initially of a young man, Walter Hartright who has an eerie encounter (with a woman in white) on a road in the middle of the night whilst on the way to take up a position of drawing master to the beautiful Laura Fairlie. This encounter haunts him from the beginning of the narrative right to the very end of the novel exploring themes of insanity, identity, family dynamics and the role of the woman in society. I loved this novel so much that I immediately was determined to research more about it. I learned that the author preferred that the reader should know as little as possible about the story so that the twists and turns would be even more surprising and effective. I simply cannot say anymore except to urge you that if you enjoy a good “sensation” novel, this superb story should be right up your street. During the period that Collins was writing in, serialisations of novels were popular so The Woman In White would have been released part by part. I can imagine how simultaneously exciting and frustrating that must have been, especially if the previous section had ended on a cliffhanger. Furthermore, each section of the novel is told by a separate witness to the events which only added to my reading enjoyment, particularly as we started to get to know each character better as the novel continued. The Woman In White is an outstanding piece of fiction that I’m so grateful to have finally experienced. It’s the sort of book you want to read all over again straight after finishing and I was so tempted to do just that. I can’t wait to check out the rest of his back catalogue! ♥️#RecomendacionesNavidadYReyesLL🎁🎄👑 ♥️¡ME ENCANTA WILKIE COLLINS! Y ME ENCANTA @albaeditorial. ¿Y A WILKIE COLLINS?

When it's not the season for storms yet and the skies dress up in that menacing shade of grey, you can't but pick up a novel suited to the mood. The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins belongs to the genre of mystery novel and draws inspiration for the plot from an actual 18th-century incident of abduction and unlawful imprisonment. No doubt, this novel is slated as the first sensational novel. #thewomaninwhite #wilkiecollins #mysterynovel #gothic #sensational #sensationalnovel #bookstagram #booktography #bookalicious #readingbooks #booksofinstagram #igbooks #igbookshop #mood #romance #stormandbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/B9UO52NJOGH/?igshid=wkh0de7a36d7

Central to the plot is the identity of the titular woman in white; "[w]as she an apparition... a madwoman... or merely a pawn in another's inscrutable scheme?" I thought I'd read this novel around a decade ago, but as I cannot answer that question and have just this moment learnt that Wilkie is William and not in fact a woman, I am beginning to think that perhaps I just owned this novel around a decade ago... Well, as luck would have it, @devon_isadevon requested a readalong during February's focus on the 👁Gothic Psyche👁. My new, secondhand, 1985 edition has arrived, complete with surprise Edward Gorey cover art💀🖤, & I'm pretty sure, like my own first copy, it's never been read (👉look at that pure, virginal spine). Time to break some book bones! Let me know if you'd like to read along with us. The more the merrier 🕯📖! When you’re trying to take a pic of your #currentlyreading pile from your sickbed and you end up having to take two pics - is THAT too many books? 😂 Here’s what I’m reading this week! I’m still making my way through The Woman In White (although I never want it to end!), Voyager in my journey through the Outlander series, Fairy Tale with the #keeperofking bookclub, The Return Of The Native and Life After Life the latter two of which are my current re-reads. I’m at chapter 4 in my audiobook - Murder - The Biography and still enjoying Light Rains Must Fall, a buddy read until Feb 2023 with Mr B. New reads include: Klara And The Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro, starting this tonight with #bitcrackbookclub The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas - buddy reading with lots of lovely bookstagrammers and I’m adoring it so far. Nearly 200 pages in. Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari- This is my current nonfiction read. I got to hear him speak in Foyles many years ago and still haven’t read his book! 🙈 A Good Man Is Hard To Find by Flannery O’Connor - this is a book of short stories and I’m starting it tonight as part of my reading challenge from @keeperofpages for book with an ugly front cover 🫣 No offence meant!! The First Woman by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi - reading this with bestie @emmasbookishcorner and we’re having our first chat tonight! About a third of the way through. North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell - another buddy reads with lots of bookstagrammers and my first ever Gaskell! Two thirds of the way through. What are you currently reading? Have you read any of these? Let’s have a chat in the comments! #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #sapiensabriefhistoryofhumankind #yuvalnoahharari #fairytale #stephenking #klaraandthesun #kazuoishiguro #thecountofmontecristo #alexandredumas #thewomaninwhite #wilkiecollins #agoodmanishardtofind #flanneryoconnor #northandsouth #elizabethgaskell #thefirstwoman #jennifernansubugamakumbi #thereturnofthenative #thomashardy #lifeafterlife #kateatkinson #voyager #dianagabaldon #murderthebiography #katemorgan https://www.instagram.com/p/ClCNODSLidM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"[𝕬] 𝖌𝖍𝖔𝖘𝖙 𝖘𝖙𝖔𝖗𝖞 𝖒𝖚𝖘𝖙 𝖍𝖆𝖛𝖊 𝖆 𝖌𝖍𝖔𝖘𝖙." - Susan Hill 🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷🕷 [Continuing from above:] "That is, a human being who appears in recognisable form after death and is seen at certain particular times, in certain particular places, regularly or spasmodically or even only once, by anyone. And in many of the best ghost stories that 'anyone' is often a someone of the most unimaginative and straightforward kind, a plain man not easily frightened, who if you were to ask him, would say with a laugh that he most certainly did not believe in such things as ghosts. He - or of course she - would not see the ghost when under the influence of drugs, drink or illness, either. They must be of sound mind, in good health." So says Susan Hill, author of 'The Woman in Black' (1989). Wilkie Collins, author of 'The Woman in White' (1860) seems to agree. He argues that plot isn't always essential to effective novel-writing, but that the figures to which events (or indeed non-events) happen are paramount: "[I]t is not possible to tell a story successfully without presenting characters: their existence as recognisable realities being the sole condition on which the story can be effectively told." 🕷 For September's 👻Glimpses of Ghosts👻 I intend to complete this monochrome pair of women. 'The Woman in White' I started earlier this year but misplaced during my move. 'The Woman in Black' I have seen, but never read. I have it on good authority that both are fantastic (as are @devon_isadevon & @gothicbookworm 🖤 ). Inspired by both authors, I'll try to focus upon the characters, living or dead, rather than getting lost too entirely in events. 🤔: If you were on the receiving end of a haunting, what kind of character would you reveal yourself to be? . #glimpsesofghosts #ghoststories #gothicnovel #gothichorror #bookstagram #tbr #ghost #ghost👻 #thewomaninwhite #thewomaninblack #wilkiecollins #susanhill #bookphotography #gothic #spookynerd #autumnvibes🍁 #spookyseason #spookyreads #classicliterature #englishliterature #generallygothic #toberead #septemberreads https://www.instagram.com/p/CE7RzO2gyyi/?igshid=y0q29m1ztxqx
