2000 Stockholm - Number 19 - Agnese - "Knowing Love and Loss"
youtube
Welcome Latvia! And also welcome Eirodziesma 2000, a brand new national final full of interesting things. Alongside EuroLaul and Eurovizijos Atranka there's a distinct flavour of Baltic pop heading Eurovision's way.
I'm heading right back into the land of mystery with this. First the linked video. It's unlisted, but given that someone else has linked to it from eurovisionworld.com, I think it should OK to put this up here. There's no visuals unfortunately and this doesn't sound like the live performance at all. However at least we've got the song.
Next there's Agnese. She is Agnese Barone, Latvian singer who to this point had two albums out including one this year. Knowing Love and Loss does not appear on either of those albums, so I'd guess in this case Agnese was a singer brought into sing this song. Her high-pitched voice and the frenetic percussion with guitar work that pans rapidly from left to right makes this close to proto-hyperpop from the foundational era. It races along, dragging your resting heart-rate with it. Definitely different for Eurovision.
Sadly the rather bizarre mix of 93% jury and 7% televote that Eirodziesma was using, didn't enjoy it. It finished 9th out of the 10 songs competing. It also marked the end of Agnese's published singing career. However she does appear to have remained within the industry. Her last.fm biography notes that she currently works in a studio belonging to Marie Naumova - someone very significant in Latvian Eurovision history.

This is kind of a random thought but I think it’s interesting how skm is far more popular through its young adventurers edition than the adult format of the play. Like every post I see on this platform has both Tilly and Agnes as high schoolers. Even though  Agnes is still the older sister they are closer in age. It’s interesting because with this small of an age gap it’s a different kind of sadness in Tilly’s death. A certain devastation in that they were so close yet so far from one another, like there is the real possibility that they could have been friends.
The version of the play I watched was a college production. With this Tilly was more the Kid Sister than a Younger Sister like in the young adventurers version. Agnes was a teacher at the school as opposed to being a cheerleader. I think this leads to a different perspective on grief in the story.
I feel the young adventurers version mourns a past, where you’re grasping at a relationship of what could have been. “Why didn’t you tell me” it’s about the wishing for a part of the relationship that was possible if only life was different.
The Adult version of the play mourns the future. It is not just who they are now but your hopes of the future with them. That what if.

Dieci abitudini delle coppie felici.
1) abbiate gli stessi ritmi. Andate a dormire alla stessa ora e svegliatevi alla stessa ora. Questo consente e aiuta la sincronizzazione.
2) baciarsi spesso aiuta e...
6) ascoltatevi. Sentirsi ascoltati, ci fa sentire al sicuro.
7) ditevi "ti amo." Di frequente. È importante condividere i propri sentimenti.
8) perdonatevi.
