Regressor!Silver Headcanons

(with cg!Gold)

Starting from the first time they met at Professor Elm's lab, there's always been a sort of pull between them. Maybe it started out as something of a rivalry, sure, but somewhere along the way it morphed into genuine friendship as Gold began to make an effort to understand Silver. Though he keeps up his guard, Gold can see the underlying anger and hurt, along with something else. Something about him just felt kind of...immature? Like he was looking at some confused little kid. But that wasn't quite it either. No, there was something that Gold had picked up on early into his encounters with Silver that he couldn't quite place. Not until they got stuck on the Whirl Islands together, after learning what Mask of Ice had done to Silver. That told Gold that the other boy hadn't exactly had a typical childhood to put it mildly, but that wasn't what made Gold realize that Silver regresses. The frustration over losing the red Gyarados is understandable, but the plain distress at losing his other Pokémon has him dropping hard and fast—resulting in an amount of tears that has Gold immediately moving to comfort him without a second thought. Though what finally, truly, keys him into the fact that Silver is a lot smaller than he seems isn't the crying, but rather the way he clings to him. He's practically sitting in Gold's lap when the realization hits him—though he does pull him into his lap when he realizes this, rocking and shushing him until he calms down.

Silver doesn't stay regressed for too long however, finding himself pulled back out of his smaller headspace when Surge comes to rescue them and return all of their things. And while usually he would find the discomfort of being pulled out of his regression annoying, in the moment he's grateful; Silver has never regressed with anyone else around (Croconaw and Weavile notwithstanding) and so he is more than a little flustered knowing that Gold saw him like that. But he did more than just see him, didn't he? Even if it was only for a short time, Gold had held him and tried his best to soothe him despite not knowing about his regression beforehand. If Silver were to be honest with himself, he would say that it was nice—once he had calmed down he actually felt safe with Gold, actually believed him when he promised to get all of their Pokémon and things back. Had they had more time before Surge arrived, Silver has no doubt he would have slipped into the lowest parts of his regression. And that scares him. Trusting someone in any headspace is already an impossible task for him, let alone trusting someone when he's so small! Nobody was ever supposed to know, was never supposed to see that side of him...although Gold seemed to be a natural, and a small part of himself finds that he wants to experience that gentleness the other boy showed him again.

Though neither of them mention what happened for some time, Gold starts to pick up on Silver's little habits and draws the conclusion that he middlespaces a lot. Really, the more he pays attention the more he understands just how often Silver was middlespacing before Gold even knew what he was looking for. Which, is another thing entirely—though he had no real knowledge of what regression was at the time, he fit into what he now knows is a caregiving role rather well. There is enough time before the next time Gold meets up with Silver that he manages to have a conversation about all this stuff (while leaving out specifics in a respect for Silver's privacy) with Professor Elm. Even if it's not necessarily his field of study so to speak, Gold figured there was no one better for him to ask. As it turns out however, there's a lot more overlap between people and Pokémon than he first thought and this kind of falls within Elm's area after all. There's a lot of "nurture" to be found within the science of raising Pokémon! Not only that, but Pokémon have also been shown to display signs of regression, falling into behaviors that were common in their previous evolution during times of stress. Gold finds all of this fascinating of course, but how come he was able to know what to do like he had done it a thousand times before? It so happens that talented Pokémon Hatchers also make talented caregivers, what with having that natural inclination to nurture something.

It takes a long time after that before Silver is willing to talk about what happened (and he appreciates Gold not pressing the issue too much). He only comes to accept that he would like Gold to be his cg when he admits that he wants a family like Gold has—only that isn't quite right. He doesn't want one like Gold has, he wants Gold to be his family. So the next time they run into each other he works up the nerve to tell him that he regresses, and to thank him for what he did back at the Whirlpool Islands. Being so nervous and embarrassed (and a little angry at himself still for not being able to keep it together) has him middlespacing already; Gold catches the way he's tugging on his shirt, the way that his fingers brush over his lips, and offers him an easy smile and an anytime! that has Silver's resolve melting. Slipping younger than his sixteen years sees him not growing bolder, yet it does see to a fall in his self-consciousness as he fumbles the words he wants to use. To ask Gold if he could maybe be his big brother, just for a little while, but that it's okay if he doesn't wanna. Imagine his surprise when Gold pulls him in for a hug and tells him of course he'll be his big bro, he's been waiting for him to ask forever now! He has so many ideas of things for them to do and things he wants to get that he thinks Silver will like, and as he rambles them all off the soft and cottony feeling in his brain is almost too much for Silver to handle. Their dynamic is very much low-energy toddler meets high-energy cg, but that isn't a bad thing! Gold just has to keep that in mind moving forwards.

For as shy as Silver is about his regression even after they work things out though, Gold is an expert at putting him at ease and drawing him out of his shell. They compliment one another to such a degree that any other cg (or babysitter, as may be the case with Crystal on occasion) just can't get the little guy to come out from where he toddled off to hide. Whereas Gold knows that Silver will come out when he's ready, so long as the Special RequirementsTM are met; those requirements being that Gold has had Exbo warm up his blankie and sprayed it with the special lavender-scented spray, has laid out a few of his Pokémon dolls, and has gotten him grape juice in his Totodile sippy cup. Only then will he come out from his hiding spot, more than content to curl up to Gold's side as he sips his juice now that everything is as it should be. While Silver doesn't exactly recognize why he needs all of this done before he feels comfortable enough to be seen, Gold is fairly certain that it has something to do with him believing that it's really okay for him to be as little as he needs to be; if the scene has been set so to speak, then it is clear to him that Gold has given him the a-okay to be small. (Despite Gold insisting that it's always okay for him to be small, it takes a long time before Silver is able to drop this little ritual of his.)

And while Gold does work with Silver on pulling him out of his overly-reserved defensive habits (albeit patiently and never pushing him on things he isn't ready to try but rather gently steering him in a healthy direction), he's still a pretty shy kid. And that's okay! Really, Gold couldn't ask for anything more—and there is something extra special and precious about being able to gets noises out of Silver when he knows how quiet the kid typically is. It quickly becomes Gold's personal quest to get as many giggles as he can out of his little guy. There's nothing that makes him happier than those carefree, high-pitched squeals that Silver sometimes makes when he truly is caught up in the moment of being four years old as his bubba pretends to be the tickle monster when they play chase. It makes Gold feel good to know that he can provide that sense of security that Silver needs in order to let go and just be the kid he never got to be growing up given that Mask of Ice kidnapped him at such a young age. As for Silver, he still has trouble believing that it's really okay for him to regress so often now—but he doesn't seem to have any of those kinds of worries whenever he's with Gold, or any worries for that matter.

Though of course their Pokémon aren't excluded from Silver's regression either! Croconaw and Weavile fulfill their due diligence as well and make sure Togebo and Pibu know how to help out their trainer when it comes to baby time. Though Croconaw still seems quite protective and takes on any duties of minding after Silver and steering him away from any perceived dangers (whether those "dangers" be a campfire or a particularly sharp looking graham cracker), Weavile takes Togebo and Pibu under its wing and teaches the pair the best way to keep Silver entertained as his playmates. They learn the art of peekaboo, master the skills of hide and seek, and even seem to be coming up with some sort of game of their own to teach to the kid. And while Gold is very much aware of their Pokémon's joint scheming, he doesn't really see a need to put a stop to things. Especially since he knows it would do Silver some good to branch out a bit, even if that branching out is only letting other Pokémon in on his regression. Not to mention he's curious about what this game they've come up with is, seeing as how Pibu was insistent on taking his billiard cue and Togebo had been nudging all the soft toys it could find into a sizable pile. Though by the end of it he's already betting Silver that if he wins that means someone has to actually go to bed on time (and of course, if Silver wins he gets an extra bedtime story—this might just be the one time Gold purposefully throws a bet).

I think Silver has to potential to be pretty fussy and grumbly, but Lance takes it all in stride bc if he can raise a team of dragons, he can raise a grumpy kiddo!! Also, Lance's pokemon adore Silver. The dragonites pretend to fight over who gets to fly him around Victory road and Silver pretends he doesn't love the attention

Silver has a lot of issues to work through, to say the least; being kidnapped by Mask of Ice at age two and spending years at his facility, learning from Lance about Mask of Ice's plan to control time, stopping aforementioned plan and going on a journey to find his parents only to discover that his father is the head of (the original) not-so-legal organization Team Rocket? Yeah, it goes without saying that all of that would create some trust issues and leave him with some lasting trauma. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. He's angry and hurt and all of these other ugly emotions that threaten to consume him because of these fears that plague him. Wasn't he good enough? Why had his father not tried to find him if he knew about this neo branch of Team Rocket? Was he not loved? A child's whole foundation is built on if they are loved, so is it really all that surprising that when that foundation is nonexistent he became lost? And since he was left without guidance, this anger at the world grew into a defense mechanism—nothing could ever hurt him again if he hurt it first. But this sort of destructive approach to life can only last for so long until it burns you up, and for Silver it inevitably does. His anger leaves him burnt-out and emotionally wrung-dry, leading to a break that results in him regressing for the first time.

There was no real trigger the first time he dropped, no sudden event that made everything come crashing down, but rather it was the result of years of uncertainty in his life having built up until there was nothing left but for it to come crumbling down. Though it's clear that regression is something of a soothing balm for him, even if he isn't sure what's happening to begin with. All he knows is that after the initial hard drop—where he cries for what feels like hours, until his eyes are puffy and his throat is raw—things start to feel lighter again. Much lighter than they have in a long time. All the problems in his life suddenly seem much simpler, so simple in fact that he shouldn't even be bothered to worry about them. All of those things were in the past, weren't they? They couldn't hurt him anymore? He is in the present, where things were finally starting to settle down and he could finally start living his life. "Start living" being synonymous with "start over" in a sense, at least for him.

Silver figures he has always been on his own really, and doesn't want to burden any of the people he's close to with whatever this is. He can handle it on his own! ...Except for the fact that being on his own when he feels so little is scary. He can never really tell when it's about to happen, and hasn't exactly told anyone about it either. Which wouldn't be a problem, if you don't take into consideration the whole scary to be alone aspect—not to mention the fact that he has trouble looking after himself since he can get pretty small. So it's a good thing he has his Pokémon there to keep an eye on him! Most often it's his Croconaw and (newly evolved) Weavile that are doing the minding after however, though they take on different roles. Croconaw typically takes on the role of protector, nudging him in the right direction—whether that be towards bed when it can tell he needs a nap or away from any perceived dangers. And Weavile tends to take on the role of playmate—bringing Silver any toys it might have happened across or acting as the seeker when they play hide and seek (knowing that the boy prefers to be the hider).

The routine of his Pokémon looking after him continues for some time, and Silver thinks that he's doing a pretty good job of keeping it under wraps. And maybe he is, to those that aren't very close with him. It doesn't take long for Lance to figure out something is up with the kid though. He's been keeping an eye on him since he was eleven, and so now that he's sixteen Lance thinks he's got a pretty good handle on what is and isn't typical Silver behavior. But he can't quite pin down what it is that's different, other than the fact that Silver seems softer at times, happier even. So it doesn't feel right to question it, and the one time that he does try to bring it up only results in the kid yelling at him to leave him alone. And so he adds delicate to the list of things Silver is now, although that last one he suspected might have been the case for some time. Needless to say Lance is concerned about the kid, and decides to pop in on him without telling him beforehand.

Lo and behold, Lance does walk in on the kid when he is up to something. The "something" not being what he had expected though. When he catches him unaware, Silver is playing—and yes, playing is the correct word much to Lance's amazement—with his Weavile and Croconaw. From the looks of things they are playing peekaboo. There's a playful Wea...wea...vile! followed by a string of giggles from Silver with an eager demand of Again, again!, a command that the Pokémon is more than happy to comply with as Weavile once again covers its eyes to repeat their little game. A game that would have continued for who knows how long, had Croconaw not alerted Silver to his presence; it looks more than a little defensive and is preparing to blast him out of the room with its water gun—its companion having abandoned playtime with the kid and making a lot of noise at him now—until Silver reaches for him and things click into place. Lance finally figures everything out, and only because it's laid out right in front of him. But more than anything it's his eyes, same color as their namesake and brimming with innocence. This is undoubtedly the softness that Lance had picked up on before and it's a softness that he finds he wants to protect.

Surprising as it was to find out about this part of Silver and for all the boy's fussing beforehand, he doesn't seem to mind it when he's small given that four year olds don't exactly have their walls put up yet. There's a tense moment when he starts to come back up that's fueled by worry—that Lance will tell (who exactly he isn't sure), or won't think him capable of being independent. But that moment never comes, and despite not having wanted to tell him and refusing to acknowledge it afterwards, Silver finds himself seeking out Lance often enough after that that he sort of becomes his cg without any talking it over. Even with Lance looking after Silver though, his Pokémon still make it a point to make sure he's doing a good job! Weavile especially makes a point to correct him—oftentimes switching things out to pre-emptively prevent a meltdown, standing on its tiptoes to reach the counter and switching the (incorrect, yucky, bad) Cyndoquil patterned sippy cup with the (correct, prefered, superior) Totodile patterned one while Lance is turned getting juice from the fridge, or rushing over with his soft gray blanket while Lance fumbles to find his Ditto squishmallow.

Lance makes it a point to spoil Silver and give him all of those experiences he missed out on the first time around, whether they be tiny things or major ones. The kid is tired? No worries, he'll get Dragonite to carry the little guy until he's either fallen asleep or is ready to walk on his own again. Is he getting listless? He's going to surprise him with a trip to visit Clair (who, as much as Lance takes on a big brother role, has found herself taking on a big sister role to her cousin's charge). She spoils him even more than Lance does if possible, buying him lots of Pokémon dolls and even making his Pokémon special berry blocks. Silver never really thought he'd have any semblance of a family, but this thing he has going with Lance? And with Clair? It's something that he never wants to end.
