My current read is Daphne Palmer Geanacopolous's The Pirate Next Door, a book about the women, families, and onshore lives of the buccaneers of the Golden Age of Piracy. The chapter on Sarah and Capt. William Kidd was later expanded into the book The Pirate's Wife, so between the book and the fact that I just bought a bottle of Thrasher's Spiced Rum (far and away my favorite spiced rum—you can taste every individual spice in it, and it tastes like Christmas), I was moved to make a glass of this: a rum punch served to Captain Kidd on the fateful day in 1688 when he received a privateering commission from the Governor of the Leeward Islands.

One thing I find really hilarious to think about sometimes is just how much older/younger a lot of the real-life Expedition crew members were compared to their fictional counterparts.

Like, 25 year-old Goodsir, anyone? Or 27 year-old Collins for that matter?

26 year-old Bridgens and 37 year-old Peglar? Ludicrous!

On the one hand, it blows my mind a little bit that I'm currently the same age as the likes of Fitzjames and Le Vesconte.

But on the other hand, I look at all of my male contemporaries - God's Perfect Idiots to a man - and think "Aw shit, yeah, it all makes sense now! Men are just fuckin' like that, huh?"

Cleaning the sweat from the side of her own head, Moe turns on her heels, throwing the thin leather strap over her shoulders, making sure that the two containers that hang from it were secure against her side. From her belt, Moe takes out a now full water skin, opening she double checks the contents - you just never knew and she wasn't about to offer something that wasn't drinkable to Kara.

She enjoyed being alive. Thanks! "Looks you've been working for hours." Moe signs, softly sliding to their side and giving them a soft shoulder bump with an easy smile, hanging them the water skin - standing between them and the work "How about a break?"

🩸Rebellious Blood🩸

Ingredients:

2 oz dark rum

1 oz blood orange juice

0.5 oz raspberry liqueur

0.5 oz simple syrup

Splash of club soda

Blood orange slice or raspberry for garnish

Instructions:

Fill a shaker with ice.

Add the dark rum, blood orange juice, raspberry liqueur, and simple syrup to the shaker.

Shake well for about 15-20 seconds.

Strain the mixture into a chilled cocktail glass filled with ice.

Top it off with a splash of club soda.

Garnish with a blood orange slice or a raspberry on the rim of the glass.

after my German emmrich post i saw a lot of tags from people saying they weren't brave enough or thought their German was too rusty to be able to play a video game in a second language and you know what gang? You know what?

my German is usually ass. i learnt hoch deutsch 'in die Schüle' and Österreichisches deustch on the fly whenever i visited my family. i live in a country far far away from europe, English is the most commonly spoken language and the closest German speaking community to me would be the ashes of dead family members, my dementia riddled grandma or the hofbräuhaus in melbourne.

so i switched veilguard into German, bc otherwise the language in me dies, and it got back to the point i was thinking in German. i found i understood much more than i anticipated. my German hasn't been as good as when i was back in gaming (yeah yeah they came from gaming im a gamer i get it). i accidentally answered my boss' question auf deutsch the other day.

i remember in my first year learning german my teacher would always speak to us in german, no matter what, and when someone said they didn't understand she would say "no, no. you understand. it is exactly what you think it is" and holy shit was she correct. she was 'deep diving' us and it works.

basically, even if you're second language is really shit and rusty, switch your favourite games into your second language. for me it helped so much more than tv show dubs. even if the dialect or the translation are a bit weird you'll pick up on it . (Unless it's in Swiss German then..... eeeuuuuchhh). play in first language with second language subtitles or vice versa. or just deep dive like i did and develop a deutsch alter ego.

only problem was this was my face when i was in the skills menu and 'schaden, schatten and schützen' were getting mixed up in my brain

Hi, what do you think of the latest chapters, especially the school case? Are there any hints regarding the plot? Do you think Maria is a suspicious girl?

File 1110-1112 Review

There were multiple hints/developments regarding the main plot in this case.

For starters, we had Gosho finally giving us a clue to the state of the shrunkies body when it comes to aging. Conan questioned why he didn't grow a centimeter every time his height got measured (File 1110), which Haibara deflected to answer by playing it down.

This is as good of a confirmation as any that Conan, Haibara & Mary cannot age in their shrunken state like Vermouth, which not only implicates Vermouth further to have taken a variant of APTX in the past but also that the shrunkies have to take the antidote by the end of the series to regain a normal life back.

Another part that caught my interest is the fact that Gosho used specific yen numbers in association with Haibara & Maria in the case, that had interesting potential to be chapter easter eggs that could be serving as foreshadowing/references to Haibara & Maria. Haibara was gonna pay 258 yen & Maria was gonna pay 302 yen.

If you look up the which chapter these numbers correspond to, Haibara's is a reference to desperate revivial case, where she completed a prototype antidote for the first time and was questioned whether she was gonna take the antidote or not (File 258).

Maria's is a reference to Sunset mansion case, where the Boss of the organization Karasuma Renya was first introduced (File 302).

This is the second time Maria has been indirectly associated with the Boss of the black organization, seeing as her reintro (File 1006-1008) was the same case that revealed Karasuma Renya to be the Boss of the black organization.

It looks like it's by design that Gosho dropped these antidote easter eggs for Haibara, just after teasing the idea that Haibara can't age normally, as well as these continued Karasuma Renya easter eggs for Maria. It's hard to say in the current stage what future awaits Maria (especially if there is any connection to Karasuma), but there are handful of clues to that she is more than your average side character, just by the nature of her characterization (her name, english influence, being the next transfer student after Haibara).

The following chapter potentially gave us the awaited answers to the mysterious Kohji case uploader. Yusaku reveals the suspicions that Wakasa was behind the Kohji case info uploads, and that she monitored the IP address of PC:s that entered the website, which in turn lead her to Conan who used Agasa's PC (File 1111).

This part seemingly resolves the mystery behind the Kohji case uploader, however, it doesn't fully resolve/explain why Wakasa set her eyes on a random curious kid, or how she realized his true competence/value to the point of joining an elementary school. I think this part of Yusaku's suspicions could be complimented with the idea of Asaka having sources that directly confirmed Conan as a valuable asset/player against the organization (i.e Kir, if Asaka is a CIA agent).

Yusaku then started to warn Yukiko about the possibility of Asaka being the type who would go through any lengths to achieve her goals (File 1111), which Gosho seems to wanna emphasize a lot to clarify her character type, as seen even with Rum's subordinates mentioning her potentially using teachers and kids as shields from bullets (File 1112).

Yusaku then proceeded to analyze her motives for staying in Teitan Elementary for as long as she has, which was also questioned by Rum (File 1112), only to be revealed at the end of the resolution chapter that it'd because of her fixation on Haibara.

The rest of the case had very heartwarming stuff with the kids and their parents (especially Haibara & Agasa), including a unique twist where Haibara ended up becoming the culprit of a relatively harmless act, which was refreshing.

We also got to properly meet Maria's mother for the first time, who resembles her quite a lot (apart from having black hair like a full-blooded japanese).

We have had clues to Maria's foreign blood through not only her foreign name and light hair colour but also the showcased english influence when her grandma called the bird toy "bird-chan" (File 1007).

The fact that her mother doesn't seem to have foregin features could be an indication that Maria inherited the foreign characteristics from her father. There is therefore room for the possibility that Maria's father is an important foreigner/non-full-japanese character in the main plot. In which case, a mysterious foreigner-looking character that comes to mind that could fit that role is the driver of "Vader" (respirator elder), who recently got a keyhole feature for Volume 103.

Even if Vader ends up being Haneda Yasuharu (Kohji's father), we have no guarantee that the driver is a good guy. For all that we know, the driver could be Maria's father who is connected/related to Karasuma Renya himself (which would explain the potential easter eggs to Karasuma in recent Maria cases).

This is a pretty long one, so I’m going to put it under the cut. :)

Munkustrap

He’s constantly trying to keep over twenty cats in line; looking after you alone is a piece of cake. He’s great at setting fair rules and enforcing them.

He has a LOT of patience; even if you’re being difficult, he won’t lose his cool.

He’s happy to explain things about Jellicles that you might not know, and he also enjoys telling you stories about famous cats.

(Sometimes he even puts on plays about these famous cats, which are a lot of fun.)

He’s SUPER protective - he will not let ANYone bother you.

Old Deuteronomy

He is so nice to cuddle - super fluffy, very warm, and hugs you tightly.

He’s incredibly loving. He sees everyone as his child, and wants everyone to feel safe and valued.

He is SO great with quiet regressors. He’s perfectly happy to just sit with you for hours, playing quietly or reading or just enjoying each other’s company.

On the other hand, if you ever need someone to talk to, he is ready to listen.

He gets SO interested in your games, your stories, your drawings - whatever you want to share with him, he is 100% focused on you.

Grizabella

She absolutely loves to cuddle you, or hold your hand, or touch your face… She went a long while without physical contact, and it’s very important to her, so she wants to make up for lost time.

She tells you about her past experiences and adventures.

She REALLY understands hardships, more than the other Jellicles do. If you’re going through a rough patch, she’ll do everything she can to help.

She’s very self-conscious about how her bad leg prevents her from running around with you. She balances things out by playing a lot of hand games.

She truly loves looking after you; it makes her feel useful in a way she hasn’t in a long time.

Jennyanydots

If you’re a mid-afternoon napper, she is wonderful to sit with. She’ll curl up beside you and let you use her tail as a pillow.

(She may even let you borrow her coat for a blanket - just be careful not to get it dirty!)

But at night? She’s a whirlwind of cleaning and straightening and putting things in order. She wants everything perfect for her little one!

She teaches you various domestic skills, like crocheting.

She loves scouts, and has started a troop that you can join if you’re interested. Earning badges, exploring outdoors, doing good deeds - what’s not to like?

Rum Tum Tugger

He totally encourages bad behavior. Make a mess! Throw your food! Call Munkustrap names! Go wild!

He also encourages you to stand up for yourself. If you don’t like something, make sure the others know it! You shouldn’t have to put up with things you don’t like.

He is probably the best to have a tantrum around, because he 1000% understands how cathartic a good tantrum can be. (Though - somewhat unexpectedly - he does make you help clean up any messes you make afterwards.)

He may not like cuddles, but he DOES love teasing. He’ll sneak up behind you and tickle or pinch you.

(And if you sneak up behind him and give him a hug, he’ll put up with it. … And maybe hug you back a little.)

Bustopher Jones

He loves to take you to his various clubs and show you off to everyone there.

(… And introduce you to the best foods on the menu. 😸)

He’s a very proper, polite individual and he’s very insistent that you also use proper manners. You’re going to be both the most respected and the most respectable regressor around!

He sticks very close to his own routine, and he’d prefer to keep you on a schedule as well… but he might be willing to change things up if you ask.

His game of choice is golf, and he’s happy to teach it to you!

Mungojerrie & Rumpleteazer

They are ALWAYS stealing things from you; toys, clothes, books, food. They always give them back, though - it’s just fun to take your stuff!

Also, they love to joke around by blaming things on each other. “No, MUNGO took your blanket, not me!” “But RUMPLE hid your sippy!”

They are SO playful, always teasing you and chasing you and bouncing you back and forth. They are super high energy, and can keep up with even the wildest regressor.

They love to play sneaking and hiding games, like Ghost in the Graveyard or Night Watchman. Mungojerrie tends to be better at these games - Rumpleteazer laughs too much.

They make a great team, especially when you’re upset. They don’t even need to talk; one will immediately go to comfort you while the other runs for something that will help you feel better.

Gus

He tells you all kinds of stories from his time in the theater - he has plenty of interesting ones!

(He also tells you about all the theater superstitions he’s picked up. Don’t you dare name the Scottish play around him!)

If you also enjoy acting, he’ll try to help you improve your skills. He’s a little out of practice, but his natural talent always shines through.

Since he stopped acting, he’s been looking for something else to do. Watching you act out your own stories has given him an interest in directing plays - with his favorite plays being one’s you agree to act in.

He tends to make a lot of “kids these days” comments, but they’re always delivered with affection.

Skimbleshanks

He’s a very orderly, organized caregiver. He always knows where you left your missing toy, always remembers which foods you don’t like, and never loses the gifts you give him.

As a railroad employee, you would expect him to keep a rigid schedule… You’d be wrong. Whenever he schedules something for you, he ends up running late - but on the plus side, he’s great with spontaneity.

If you’re adventurous, he’ll sneak you onto his train and show you the Northern Hemisphere!

… And if you’re more of a homebody, he’ll tell you all about his own adventures!

No matter where you are, he does his best to make sure you’re always comfortable.

Mr. Mistoffelees

“Vague and aloof”? False! Lies and balderdash! He is so extremely cuddly and affectionate it’s ridiculous!

Know what else is ridiculous? How much he loves to show off. He is an incredible showman and he loves to see your excitement when he does something amazing.

Whenever you’re feeling blue, he’ll summon something to cheer you up.

He has a lot of magic tricks; some actually magic, some slight-of-hand. If you want, he’ll teach you some of the latter - but only some! He can’t give you too many explanations.

Hope you like glitters. Wherever he goes, there are sparkles.

Macavity

He LOVES scaring the others, and he also likes to scare you. (And if you scare him back? Hoo boy, he’s TERRIFIED. But after all, you did learn from the best, didn’t you?)

He can’t teach you levitation, but he CAN pick you up and float around with you, which is the next best thing.

Hide and seek with him lasts for hours.

He’s a master of disguises, and can sneak you and himself into any location - which is great when you want to play tricks on someone.

He teaches you all the best ways to cheat at cards.
