Most likely they're thinking of other versions of the game. This post is specifically about NES Tetris. I highly doubt random people on tumblr and their moms/dads/cousins/uncles/aunts/etc had figured out techniques in the 80s-90s that the absolute most dedicated players (Blue Scuti said he practices 3 to 5 hours a day!) still haven't discovered.
The only time I've ever heard of anything similar was .. I think it was Super Mario 3, but don't tl;dr, it got showcased at AGDQ 2014 and right afterwards the runners got a message like "Hey, why do you do this really slow strat for this very difficult clip?" and sent them a video of a Japanese player from years before showing that you can basically just Do The Clip? So it's technically not impossible that people have figured out gamebreaking techniques before now, but that was a whole ass language barrier lmao.
So apparently the pro-Tetris scene is exploding right now because a 13 year old nerd just reached the game's true killscreen for the first time ever

Top five individual years of ur life please (for instance, 2014 was a happy year for me)
this is a really difficult question to answer because I'm so young! I don't feel comfortable ranking them bc I don't want to feel like I've peaked or something, but I suppose I'll sayyy (in chronological order)
2016 (went to disneyland on an orchestra school trip and had the best day of my life [at the time], graduated high school, went to Japan with my sister, started studying game design community college)
2018 (visited my sister in Washington, went to Japan with my sister and 2 other friends, worked at a retail job where I learned a lot and met new friends, saw Dan and Phil live, went to Disney with my family, cosplayed climbing Link from botw at PAX)
2019 (went to AGDQ in Maryland with my sister, got hired by an indie game team as a concept artist, visited my sister in Washington with my friend Bryce for a week and it was lovely! learned how to face paint with my mom, got super into anime and Uta no Prince Sama!! ANIME EXPO! Drew a lot of fanart...ok yea this year was definitely awesome)
2021 (got my helix pierced as a reward for getting vaccinated, visited my friend Bryce in Boston with my sister for a week [lovely again!], got SUUUUUUPER into Supernatural and other tv shows, drew a lot of traditional stuff with markers, got really into kpop and more specifically TXT! Went to disneyland with my family, got to go to a Halloween party dressed as a cat maid)
i still need one more year buuttttt i can't think of one! undoubtedly i had a great childhood but its hard to pick one year in particular bc they were all pretty good :) thx for the interesting ask!
send me top 5 something and I'll rank them!

Borderlands 2 Evil Smasher Glitch After Patch 3
I'm trying the double run (and have watched the WR run for it), but I'm having an issue. For some reason when I have infinite ammo my smash is random, but doesn't build. It'll stay around 100 indefinitely.
In summary, on the latest patches, the glitch cannot reduce ammo consumption by more than one, and other entities using Vladof rocket launchers can unset the effect. Update 2: While the AGDQ 2014 co-op speed-run demonstrates this being done as non-host, I was unable to perform this glitch as non-host on patch 1.8.3. And ProfessorBroman stated such.
The classic glitch abused the merging weapons glitch to put the Evil Smasher’s special effect on other weapons. This new glitch only involved the Evil Smasher never losing its special effect. It could of happened due to the “repairing” of the Evil Smasher on the community patch though.
Glitch Used normally, Evil Smasher does not level up beyond Power level 1. However Evil Smasher can glitch to higher Power level. The glitch was patched following the April 2 update patches.
Borderlands 2 Evil Smasher Glitch After Patch Rating: 3,9/5 5304 reviews Glitch Used normally, Evil Smasher does not level up beyond Power level 1. However Evil Smasher can glitch to higher Power level.
After playing around I've determined that one difference is when I don't have infinite ammo the gun reloads automatically when I switch to it (and stacks normally). When I have infinite ammo I have to reload manually (hit the reload key) every time I switch to it. Also, when doing this if I have a smash, every time I switch to the evil smasher I lose one stack (ex: I have 117, switch to smasher, don't reload, switch back, I have 100, i.e. I have lost one stack).
I've tried copying the steps in the run but it doesn't seem to work for me and I don't want to to stack a bunch and then start TVHM, I'd rather stack on the go, (for speed). So stacking and then getting infinite ammo is (hopefully) no an option.
Thanks for any help you can offer. Autodesk fusion 360 mac download.

dont message me about this please. I just need somewhere to dump it
I had a falling out with my best friend at the end of july and he completely cut off contact with me. i trusted him more than anybody in the world and there are no words to describe how much his friendship meant to me. the way this happened destroyed my sense of self-worth and I isolated myself from people and tried to fill that empty void with drinking and shitty eating habits (namely starving myself followed by binge eating). fell into a pretty bad depression and was constantly lethargic and unproductive. hated going out in public because I hated myself and didnt want to be seen.
suffered a death in the family at the end of august. this isnt something I cope with in a healthy way. especially during that period of time
started talking with my friend again in september but that didnt go very well either. still felt shitty about this every day, just having this constant nervousness and wanting to throw up and feeling like im carrying a huge weight on my shoulders, every day 24 hours a day. i had dreams about our situation all the time and it fucked me up. cant remember the last time I got a good nights sleep. developed a lot of trust issues from revelations that came out in the few discussions we had. we havent spoken in almost 2 months now. still really miss him but also still hurting over the things he said and did
2 weeks later, boyfriend of 2 years broke up with me when I got back from dreamhack. it wasnt really a surprise and there's no bad blood but was still a really hard adjustment. we had lived together since before we started dating.
we were splitting rent on a 1 bed apartment so now I have to pay for it myself. i dont really have the means to move. this fucked me over financially bc I was in the process of paying about 8000 dollars worth of debt accrued from when I was unemployed in 2014. so that's why none of you have really seen me since then, im saving money instead of going out to do things. this is also around when I decided to cut the drinking to prevent it from getting out of hand and decided to fix my eating habits, both of which are saving me money
met someone new in november who I got close to pretty quickly. he knew I was hurting from something, a lot of things, and helped me recover and was somehow over time able to convince me i didnt deserve any of what was going on. i started to believe it too. we spent a lot of time together and became very good friends.
around the same time i saw another friend have a falling out with his best friend and the way it got him down made me really angry. he didnt deserve to feel that poorly. this helped me realize that neither did i.
start of december, i fell mutually in love with the new friend. although it was just the beginning of the relationship, it was unprecedented in how genuinely loved I felt. we were supportive of each other in ways I didnt even know I could be. never enjoyed someone's company so much before or felt so totally safe telling them literally anything, and after I was having so much trouble and anxiety over opening up to anybody like that again, this was really really special that he could make me feel that way. especially considering the vulnerable state I was in, I tried to be cautious about getting this attached so quickly, but I decided to trust him. you kinda had to be there to understand just why I let myself feel this way despite it looking like a textbook mistake and me being well aware of that fact. he was thoughtful and respectful and considerate and was the most loving person i've ever known. we live a long distance apart and decided we'd take things slowly until we had the chance to spend some time together in person and discuss what our future looks like at that time. we spent a lot of time together calling each other around the holidays and never let a day (or an hour, really) go by without making the other feel loved and appreciated and worthwhile. for a christmas gift he contacted a lot of my friends and compiled a series of video and audio clips from all of them sending me kind words at the holidays to remind me that i'm loved. he really was a wonderful person.
being able to really believe that I didnt deserve to feel as badly as I had been since the summer, combined with falling in love again... I was finally something resembling happy again, I got my confidence back, I was energetic and productive and in an improved state of mind... not completely, things still hurt and I think they always will. but I was at least functioning. the wounds were still there and they were still fresh but I was at least starting to heal.
had to replace my pc because too much of my hardware was just not working anymore. that was a big financial setback I wasnt prepared for. my laptop mobo also broke so now I dont have one of those anymore. oh well. once im done paying off the last part of my debt im going to save up for a new one
start of january, one of my closest friends goes radio silent and unresponsive to texts and calls for over a week. i was a fucking mess worrying about him. (we hung out a few days ago but at the time holy shit)
my coworker at my job (the only other dev on my team) is leaving, so I have to learn a ton of new stuff and also train who we hire next, and im pretty stressed out about that on top of the status of my current major project
i didnt go to agdq this year, but that entire week was rough. wanted to stay off social media and stuff to not be reminded of it but this is where all my connections are and I need to work on shit. I spent a lot of last agdq making good memories with the friend i had the falling out with and thinking back to that just makes me really sad now.
was finally starting to enjoy streaming again and I injured my hand recently and cant use it to use a dpad or joystick, so now im not doing that either. it got infected pretty badly and ive been worried about that for a while, but it's healing up now. hopefully ill return soon. also having numerous other alarming things happen healthwise that are too TMI for here but... yeah
last week the guy i loved dumped me. not going to go into detail on this but i feel very very slighted by how he chose to do it. it had only been a month but im pretty messed up and blindsided by it. despite the short length I can't remember the last time I had any kind of interpersonal relationship that was so emotionally fulfilling. i still don't really understand. being around him hurt so much that I left my favourite discord server where a lot of my close friends are cause he's in there too. i miss being in there so much but i just cant do it
on saturday I got the news that one of my friends from the smash 64 community passed away unexpectedly. i went to the visitation on sunday. it still doesn't feel real.
i dont want to talk about it, I dont want any offers to talk about it, I dont want to relive it, I dont want to think about it, and especially especially I d o n t w a n t t o t a l k a b o u t i t. just getting it out there bc I feel kinda overwhelmed atm from everything. i just wanna focus on doing the things I need to get done to keep my mind occupied. i want my best friend back, i want the person I love back, i want my friend to come back to life. there's nothing else that can be done for me

Meet MASHBot, the touchscreen-tapping, Nintendo DS-playing robot
Since making its public premiere at 2014’s Awesome Games Done Quick marathon, TASBot (the tool-assisted speedrun robot) has repeatedly amazed audiences by performing seemingly impossible in-game feats. Using nothing but pre-recorded electrical signals sent through a game console’s standard controller ports, TASBot has done everything from beating Super Mario Bros. 3 in under a second, to running Twitch chat through a standard SNES, to coding an SNES version of Super Mario Maker on the fly.
But no matter how amazing TASBot’s performances are, there’s still a group of naysayers out there that argues that the robot’s direct connection to the controller port makes the whole thing inauthentic, somehow. "Every single YouTube video I post, there's at least one guy calling us haxxors and saying we are filthy cheaters,” TASBot team manager Allan “DwangoAC” Cecil told Ars at the recent Awesome Games Done Quick charity marathon (AGDQ). “No matter how many times we explain that it's not a ROM hack, people assume that we've hacked the game, when we haven't, in the sense of changing its ROM."
So this year, in an effort to prove the doubters wrong, Cecil and the TASBot team set out to create “a replay device that’s the most insane thing we’ve ever done,” as Cecil put it on stage. Rather than just sending signals through the controller port, MASHBot (the Machine-Assisted Speedrun Hardware robot) can actually manipulate the controller itself (in this case, a Nintendo DS touchscreen), without any human intervention.

top ten of my favorite speedrunners don't @ me im objectively right. check out their archives/marathon runs if you're looking for something to chill out to.
10. TMR - not ranked higher because i didn't watch a lot of his streams casually but holy goddamn did he have the best reactions. mandatory viewing: Cuphead AGDQ2019.
9. saboom/SSBMstuff suuuuuuper underrated runner, retired almost 10 years now. loved how chill and relaxed his streams were and he was always super nice and thoughtful/considerate. i think it takes great dedication to run at a top level while stoned out of your gourd. the 10 is for 10/10. his signature move was sitting on the floor to run even when there was a couch right there. fav archived run: Spyro 3 100 egg race AGDQ2014
8. shenanigans_ - very funny very smarmy very sassy, reminds me of all my out gay friends in high school. i love how he can switch between relentlessly meme'ing to talking technically about the game without missing a beat and i enjoy when he flirts with his friends on stream. fav run: Pokemon Glitch Showcase AGDQ2016. check out any pokemon run where he's on the mic though, he's great.
7. Jhobz - would be higher but i rarely caught any of his streams before twitch put the bullet in adblock. always seemed very articulate and humble, always quick to credit other runners where it was due, seemed to have great chemistry with anybody. his KH races at GDQ were (are?) always a highlight, I loved when he was on the mic. great sense for when to contribute and when to just shut up and play, a skill many showcase runners lack. fav run: not him actually running, but his couch commentary on Bl00dyBizkitz's KHII Final Mix run for AGDQ2017 is an old favorite of mine.
6. kz_frew - man came out of nowhere with the best run of AGDQ 2019, and just absolutely killed it out the gate. funniest runner on this list by far, his deadpan delivery and ability to roll with the punches without breaking character are incredible. i remember his politics being good too, which is nice. mandatory viewing: GTA Vice City AGDQ2019. this was so fun to watch live, holy shit.
5. gymnast86 - when it comes to runners, Gym definitely falls on the more technical side, but i tend to like that personally. it helps that he's never overwhelming with the info and makes it easy to understand without every feeling like he's dumbing it down. all his gdq runs are good but I particularly like his OOOT3D Mst run from GDQx2018.
4. spikevegeta - BIG personality, ranked highly because he's just a big bundle of charisma and energy. a lot of people know him on the mic at GDQ events but he's also a top runner in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Which I will go ahead and link for the riveting Picross gameplay.
3. dukebligewater - DUKE. we miss you so much duke. i hope wherever he is now he's having fun. pure nostalgia factor here. check out both his Hotline Miami 1 and 2 runs at AGDQ 2014 and 2015 respectively. the ur niche speedrunner.
2. pjdecaesar - i got through this list and realized PJ was going to be second from the top and i was like "huh!" but it makes sense. jack of all trades and master of all as well, PJ is the perfect split between charisma, technical ability, and humor. i don't think he does events anymore, but if you recognize the name it's because he was an early GDQ staple. all his runs are fun, funny, engaging, technically explained, and eminently watchable. I like his Lagoon run from AGDQ2016 but honestly pick any PJ run or anything off his youtube channel and it'll hold your attention. Mohawk and Headphone Jack is beyond description.
werster - the man the myth the legend the one the only the irritable aus himself. being serious for a moment, werster was one of the first speedrunners I ever discovered because he ran my favorite game in the world, Pokemon Gold and he was posting strats before speedrunning was even a thing with a name on SDA. i've watched this man grow and change and become the best version of himself and i along with him. he and i both will be playing retro pokemon until the earth falls into the sun. go ahead and check out my favorite recent one of his Heart Gold Any% Manipless from ASM 2022, but his speedrun of Soul Silver from AGDQ 2014 is also timeless. I like comparing them both.
that comic where the guy remembers 2011 and starts crying but it's me remembering 2015 and all my favorite speedrunners were in their late teens/early 20s at the top of their game and streaming all the time and twitch worked with adblock and im weeping openly

New Halo 2 Strategy Could Shave Minutes Off Speedruns
A new take on an old trick is shaving several minutes off of Halo 2 speedruns. Known as “butterflying” back in the golden days of Halo 2 multiplayer, the trick has been adapted for use in the single-player campaign by the ‘runners at HaloRuns.com.
How the trick worked in multiplayer was ingenious. When a player was within a certain range of an enemy, a melee would cause the player to lunge at the enemy in order for the hit to connect. But, with a timely press of the X button, the attack would be cancelled though the lunge would continue. When the enemy was on your head continually jumping, and you continually melee-cancelled, you and the other player would begin to float into the air.
youtube
Jump to 2018 and the trick has crossed over into the campaign, though the most glaring issue is that AI combatants are not as obedient as human players. At the moment, this trick is being applied to the mission, High Charity, where Master Chief must fight through the Covenant city in order to board a Forerunner ship. Though the mission is relatively short, there is a lot of fighting, which makes Legendary attempts (the games notorious maximum difficulty) extremely challenging.
In the above clip, Mister Monopoli shows the button coordination needed to make this trick work. In essence, a Flood combat unit is baited to the edge of the map, and then the player falls off the lip and immediately begins the “butterfly” glitch. With precise controlling, this allows Master Chief to float around the outside of the map and hit the trigger that ends the level, without having to step foot inside the enemy-filled corridors.
youtube
At Awesome Games Done Quick 2014, Monopoli showed everyone why he’s often considered one of the best ‘runners around. With excellent gameplay and commentary, he created an exciting experience for even those who are speedrun illiterate. The level High Charity takes roughly 7 and a half minutes for him to complete, with a similar time being recorded at AGDQ 2017 by speedrunner cryphon.
twitch
This is a good ballpark figure for how fast ‘runners are typically able to finish the level, but thanks to the new applications of the butterfly trick in campaign, speedrunners like Ranabundana have been able to bring the time down to an impressive 2 minutes. This could potentially bring the full game run down to a sub 1 hour 30 minutes. Breaking through these time barriers is often an exciting moment, especially when a game was considered fairly well done and dusted.
All that’s left now is to optimize the strategy, because although it has the potential to save a lot of time, the problem comes with setting it up and pulling it off. Sometimes the riskiest strategy – like fighting through hordes of enemies – is often the fastest.

Throwback Thursday: As of last Weekend, the DK Vine Tumblar broke 103 followers, more than any final percentage in the first three DKC titles! Fitting this milestone, here’s an archived 101% (+ Glitched) run of Donkey Kong Country by NEWAGERETROHIPPIE from the philanthropic folks at Awesome Games Done Quick, broadcast live last year.

As someone who doesn't really watch speed runs, I have become fascinated with Awesome Games Done Quick today. For those who don't know, its a marathon of amazing speed runners doing what they do for charity and it is just so damn interesting. Did you know in Bioshock, you can just skip Fort Frolic with gaming witchcraft? The amount of skill, memorization, and nonsensical tricks to do this shit just blows my mind.
But the best part is that the audience just golf claps after hard parts. It's fucking hilarious. They should all be wearing fancy hats and sipping champaign.
Yes, good show, good show.
