A man outside his house. November 2013, a terrible typhoon called Haiyan struck Philippines with such brutal force that left so many dead and homeless. It is one of the strongest tropical typhoons ever recorded. The damage was absolutely horrific. Images of death and suffering were blasted through media channels. Families gone, children orphaned, villages, towns, and cities destroyed. The aftermath was a sad picture of a country crippled by nature's wrath. . My participation in this year’s Gabii sa Kabilin was limited to Mandaue. Frankly, I was too tired to hop around different museums in Cebu City. So I confined myself to Mandaue where I also helped out in the book both of Phialo which displayed books on Cebu's culture and heritage published by the University of San Carlos Press and printed by ClintKAMMS Corp. I was with Phialo's two hardworking ladies, Choly and Charity, when Pilipoy came over with his box of candles. He just moved in Mandaue last February 2017 after three years of being out of school as a result of the devastation wrecked by Super Typhoon Yoland to their home in Tacloban. What was most admiring though is that tnis 12-year-old boy chose to help out his grandmother Lilian to sell candles so they will have enough money to buy his school requirements for this school year. Yes, he's going back to school and he's not begging money for it. Such admirable quality from a child. Numerous charities and personal efforts came up with distribution networks to provide food, clothing, and shelter to the affected areas across the country - including the villages close to the sea that were badly hit. Though some of the devastation were not as horrific compared to other parts of the country, it was still a terrible ordeal for everyone as homes were destroyed and their livelihood gone. . A neighbourhood variety store. Commodities are displayed in a large screen-covered or metal barred window in front of the shop. Candies in recycled jars, canned goods and cigarettes are often displayed while cooking oil, salt and sugar are often stored at the back of the shop. They also distribute prepaid mobile phone credits. This store was rebuilt right after the typhoon. . The coastal area was badly damaged during the typhoon. Houses were washed away, vegetations were flattened and boats were destroyed. Fishing and farming were the only livelihood the people of the village are accustomed to. After the typhoon, they had to seek another alternative means of earning but most of them ended up depending on government help. It took them nearly a year to regain what they lost and to start all over again. . This is my last post for the #YolandaPH.
