Hello sorry to disturb you. In a post from some time ago (about Okada Izo and literacy) you talked about how at the end of the Edo era there were books printed with kana targeted toward women and children. You linked a (very interesting) article about Female Readership in Edo in this post. The article gives many interesting details about books and their female readership, but I am not sure about the average level of literacy of women at the time. The only thing I am sure of is that higher class women were more literate than lower class women, and men tended to be more literate than women of similar social classes. Would an middle class woman (from a low samurai family, or a not particularly rich merchant family, but not poor) know how to read kanji at the time?
Questions are never a bother as long as you don't mind that I sometimes just don't have an answer, and that other times it takes a long time before I can get to it.
But I do have a quick answer for this question because it came with perfect timing: I just read an article on Edo period literacy by Tsujimoto Masashi!
Estimating an average literacy rate for the Edo period is difficult because the rate varied between the early, middle and late Edo period, between urban and rural settings, and because research in this area suffers from an overall lack of accurate period statistics.
That said, Tsujimoto estimates that by the mid-1700s, the literacy rate in Japan's three largest cities - Edo, Kyoto, and Osaka - may have been as high 60-70% among males and 40-50% among females, and that literacy rates in rural areas were likely about 10-20% lower than this.
Being literate in Edo period Japan was a near necessity because not being literate put you at significant disadvantage: edicts and important information was posted on public signboards, and the government accepted no reports, petitions, or appeals that were not presented in writing.
Even in villages, where the overall level of literacy may have been low, village officials and wealthy farmers needed to be both literate and adept at math to ensure records were kept and were kept accurately.
Schools for the common people, such as merchants, townspeople, and farmers, were not regulated by the shogunate, so anyone with an inclination to teach could open a school of their own. This was often a go-to for unemployed samurai, but as Tsujimoto points out in his article, it was also a common way for widows in urban areas to make their living as writing teachers.
How common were those schools? Tsujimoto points to a 1722 letter written by a Confucian scholar employed by the shogunate, which states that "there are more than 800 writing teachers in Edo". That's roughly one writing teacher per residential block in the areas of the city inhabited by townspeople rather than samurai.
Tsujimoto writes: "The study of penmanship usually began with the iroha (that is, kana). Then, after studying numbers, students learned the Chinese characters for things familiar from everyday life, personal names, place names, and the heavenly directions. Next, they progressed to a text that was a compilation of phrases commonly used in letters, idiomatic expressions, and standard sentences."
As students usually started their studies around age 6 or 7, and generally continued for about 5 years, this meant most students who attended writing schools, both male and female, would have had a good foundation in kana, as well as knowledge of at least a fair number of commonly-used kanji.
Therefore: a woman from a poor samurai family or an average merchant family had a good chance of being able to read and write at least a limited number of kanji, depending on how long she attended school and how well she kept up with her studies. She would be most likely to read kanji that are in common use for everyday things.
An interesting note here to bring this back to Okada Izo: many of the letters written by Izo's teacher, Takechi Hanpeita, remain in collections and archives. Among his writings are letters to his wife, Tomiko, which he wrote primarily using kana but also occasional kanji within the text. Takechi's letters to Tomiko, I think, are probably a good example of texts that would have been within the reading ability of a lower-ranking samurai's wife.

Access Denied ~ Decolonization as a Digital Activist
Hi! It’s Dawn-of-the-Silver-Age again. I’ve been thinking about how we must decolonize technology since reading a blog by Beatrice Martini.
When considering what decolonized technology is, I tend to think about computers, the internet, phones along with devices like braille readers, reading pens, otter.ai, etc. What about you? When I think about the act of colonizing I tend to think of residential schools, the stealing of Indigenous peoples’ lands, and lack of water/poor housing on reservations. We have certainly “othered” Indigenous people and their right to exist on the land that was once their home. When I put these ideas together, I think about “who gets to use a tool or service” (Martini). I think about who has and doesn’t have access to the internet. Language can be a barrier as can money. We need to look at the barriers to technology for Disabled people.
All of this is to ask “How can we use technology to decolonize?”
How-To Guide to becoming a Digital Activist focused on Decolonization:
1. Find a topic that you are passionate and want to learn about!!
2. Find resources on the topic from a variety of perspectives. Primary resources like diary entries, letters, official government documents, photographs; and, secondary sources including: statistics, historical texts, biographies, cartoons, newspaper articles are useful.
a) Consider the origin, purpose, content, and the values and limitations for each source. I.e.-- if a source was meant to be a private reflection, thoughts and feelings expressed are likely to be a person’s honest experiences as they don’t need to hide from themselves. In a public post people can say things to shock or hide things due to fear of retribution.
3. After reading the passages, consider who is included, whose stories are being told, why they are being told, and who’s stories aren’t there.
4. Depending on what stories and perspectives are left out, learn more. Seek people out, read, watch documentaries (they aren’t all boring), learn from them, and pay for their labour.
5. What do you think about what you have read? If the topic relates to your own life and experiences, how do these differ from the source?
6. Start writing and building a presence online to find others like you interested in the topic and start conversations with them to build community.
When starting a digital activism journey, consider who you are, your experiences, access, and where you live.
When I started my journey of becoming an activist and an advocate, I confronted my perspective as a white settler and the differences between my experiences being Disabled and those with intersectionalities, for example, Disabled/male/Indigenous, or Disabled/Black. Our experiences are unequal. We have different views on what is right or wrong in the Disability circle.
For example, for years, I was very anti-ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis) therapy and voiced this opinion through digital activism. In my posts, I said that ABA indoctrinates, pushes Autistic youth to act in Neurotypical ways, and is abusive.
This changed after I read Tiffany Hammond’s piece. Hammond is a Black Autistic adult with two Autistic sons. She revealed to me the perspective of those who require ABA so that they are not harmed walking down the street, in the classroom, or in other spaces because of racism and ableism. Hammond’s view on ABA is neither pro- nor anti- – it’s one view, and her experience within the community and her lived experience spoke to me far more than I could have imagined. She saw ABA as necessary because it reduced the possibility of harm to her kids who couldn’t mask their Autism.
I wish we lived in a world where Autistics do not need to worry about it, but we don’t. And, until we do, I appreciate Hammond using ABA to keep her family safe. What do you think?

Navigating the Path to an MBA in Australia: A Guide to Study Visas\
Australia, renowned for its world-class education system and vibrant multicultural atmosphere, has emerged as a prime destination for pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Australia. If you're considering this academic journey, one crucial aspect to understand is the process of obtaining a study visa. This article will guide you through the essential information to make your visa application a smooth and successful experience.
Understanding the Visa Categories:
Australia offers various visa categories for international students. The most relevant for pursuing an MBA is the Student Visa (Subclass 500). This visa allows you to stay in Australia for the duration of your course and is the key to unlocking the doors of prestigious Australian business schools.
Admission to an Australian MBA Program:
Before applying for a study visa, secure admission to a recognized MBA program in Australia. Ensure the chosen institution is registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS), a prerequisite for obtaining a student visa.
Financial Capacity:
To qualify for a student visa, you must demonstrate your ability to cover the cost of tuition, living expenses, and other associated costs. This may involve providing evidence of sufficient funds through bank statements, sponsorship, or a scholarship.
Health Insurance:
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is mandatory for all international students in Australia. Before applying for your student visa, arrange OSHC to ensure you have access to medical services during your stay.
English Proficiency:
As the primary language of instruction is English, you'll need to prove your proficiency. Most MBA programs require a minimum score in recognized English proficiency tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, or Pearson PTE.
The Visa Application Process:
1. Offer of Admission:
Once accepted into an MBA program, you'll receive a Confirmation of Enrollment (CoE) from your institution. This document is crucial for your visa application.
2. Create an ImmiAccount:
Visit the official website of the Department of Home Affairs and create an ImmiAccount. Fill in the necessary details accurately to start your visa application.
3. Lodge Your Application:
Complete the visa application form, attach the required documents, and pay the application fee. Ensure all information provided is accurate and matches the details on your CoE.
4. Biometrics and Health Check:
Depending on your country of residence, you may need to provide biometrics. Additionally, a health examination might be required, so stay informed about the specific requirements for your situation.
5. Wait for a Decision:
Visa processing times vary, so monitor your application status through your ImmiAccount. Once a decision is made, you'll be notified of the outcome.
Post-Arrival Obligations:
After successfully obtaining your student visa and arriving in Australia, there are ongoing obligations to fulfill:
Maintaining Enrollment:
Ensure you remain enrolled in a CRICOS-registered course to comply with visa conditions.
Address Reporting:
Keep your contact details updated through your institution's student portal, as you are required to inform authorities of any changes in your residential address.
Work Limitations:
Understand the limitations on work hours during the academic semester as per visa regulations.
By following these guidelines, you can navigate the study visa process and embark on your MBA journey in Australia with confidence. The country's dynamic business environment and commitment to excellence in education make it a promising destination for those aspiring to elevate their managerial skills.
Remember, each student's situation is unique, so it's advisable to consult with the Australian embassy or a qualified migration agent for personalized guidance on your visa application. Best of luck with your MBA adventure down under!

I have literally never found a leftist social justice activist on any social media platform who actually speaks and acts as though they believe that all people are equal--including themselves. Twelve times out of a dozen, they just repeat the latest memes from each other so they look better and smarter than people who don't feel like talking about genocide on their off time, squabble for social status amongst each other over half-assed trivia and political canon as though the real world were a fucking fandom, and always, always, have some group(s) of at least mostly innocent people whom they openly treat as jokes or monsters instead of their equals.
You know, besides the vast majority of humanity, whom they cannot seem to stop themselves from treating as worthless, stupid sheeple, even in public.
It's like internet socialists find a new worldview that offers almost boundless freedom... and then immediately start manipulating its intentional ambiguities to make up their own arbitrary rules that everyone else whom they allow to associate with them has to follow, creating a fuck ton of tiny little cults of personality that have even worse authoritarian attitudes than normal social groups. Somehow, even anarchists at the center of these clusters refuse to acknowledge that the internet clout, follower count, and "wins" they're all too happy to accumulate are all forms of power: power that they're eager to use to dominate other people. They're just like evangelical Christians.
I'm not fucking exaggerating. I WISH I was exaggerating. They are exactly like evangelicals, down to the specific moral panics: I recently had to leave a left-oriented transgender "safe space" on Discord when the mods decided that it was acceptable for self-identified anarchists to bully me for days because I argued (with actual data from personal research, mind you)... that paying money for a Harry Potter book really wasn't that bad for trans people in the grand scheme of things.
THAT'S what the fuckers who post all those horrific news articles (that they never even read) and traumatizing images/videos (that they beg you not look away from), without ever offering solutions or showing any signs of learning or growing, actually care about: being RIGHT.
It doesn't matter whether they're talking about Harry Potter or race relations--all that really matters to them is that they are correct and you are stupid, and they get to defeat you in front of all their internet followers. I've seen it countless times.
They choose their beliefs about the world based on whether it fits their ideology, not on observed fact, so it's impossible to discuss anything seriously with them; they're usually itching for a fight, anyway (I never broke 80 followers on Twitter but still had to deal with "leftist" shitheads popping up out of nowhere to try to pick fights or intellectually dominate me, another leftist).
Ironically, socialist beliefs are supported by facts... but you might never guess that if all you knew about socialism were the batshit takes that these fools come up with. Just like with Christians, this is how you know when someone doesn't actually believe a word of their purported ideology: if they really believed that leftism works and benefits everyone, they wouldn't be trying to force other people to believe it with fear and shame.
Basically,
🚩🚩🚩Someone whose entire political activity consists of puffing themselves up, trying to make other people feel worse, asking for money, mudslinging, and distorting facts does not actually care about socialism or human well-being, no matter WHAT they claim to be🚩🚩🚩
#politics vent#social media vent#a bit heavy today#legit I fucking hate these people#at least awful conservatives are open about it#and not pretending to be the only truly good people in the world#while running roughshod over anyone with the slightest disagreement#fucking hypocrites#I *know* they don't read the articles they post#because I *did*#and they were always wrong about what was in them#or like totally happy and normal#after posting 5 articles about residential schools#this assessment is based on hundreds if not thousands of real people#observed over more than a decade and multiple social media sites#so don't get on me about 'stereotyping'#it doesn't need to be said#but of course most of them were white middle-class westerners

What does a “secret” closed city, classified during the USSR, hide?
…a common sight in my hometown of Seversk
A slightly creepy illustration about a closed nuclear city will set the atmosphere for this article :)
In the era of socialism, the Soviet Union had many closed cities that were hidden not only from the prying eyes of enemies, but also from their own people. These cities weren’t even shown on the map until 1993, but they were home to thousands of people who didn’t actually exist. Most of these closed cities in Russia were excluded from train and bus routes, and were known only by their postal code, consisting of a name and number. Tomsk 7- this is written in my birth certificate document in the column “ place of birth”.
Today, most of the former closed cities are open to the public, but there are some that are still hidden by the authorities. It is estimated that today there are about 40 closed cities in Russia, and more than 1.5 million people live here. If you want to visit a closed city, you need to get special permission from the security services, and it is not easy to get it. Permits are mostly reserved for relatives of people who live in these cities, or for those who are assigned there for work or service.
Seversk today: the main street of the city is called “Communists Avenue”
I was born in a closed city and lived in it for more than forty years — all my childhood and youth. Seversk is a closed locality, since its territory is home to a plant for the production of highly enriched uranium and plutonium. In General, the secret of the nuclear industry. What is it like to live behind barbed wire, sew a respirator for yourself in BLS lessons (Basics of life Safety, in Soviet and now Russian schools there is such a thing) And why do I watch the TV series “Chernobyl” with completely different eyes?
So, my hometown is Seversk. One of these legendary “secret” cities of the USSR. This blog entry is dedicated to a brief description of it. I will tell you the history of the city and touch a little on current life. so that the reader has some minimal idea about this place.
Seversk today: a bird’s-eye view of the city
Seversk is located in the geographical center of Russia, in Western Siberia, on the right Bank of the Tom river, a couple of dozen kilometers from the regional center — the large ancient Siberian city of Tomsk. This is away from the usual tourist routes, a provincial city on the plain, where of the natural attractions in the surrounding area, first of all comes to mind only the world’s largest swamp, it is difficult to compete with tourist centers in Moscow or St. Petersburg, the historical pearls of the “Golden ring” of Russia or the famous Baikal. But relatively close to us are the wonderful Altai mountains and Tomsk itself is known for its ancient wooden merchant buildings. For those interested in the history of Russia and the USSR, especially some dark pages of the past, we have something to see ;)
google maps, Seversk in red
A closed city is not just a name. It is really surrounded by a solid protective strip around the perimeter. The city is surrounded by a perimeter fence with 5 rows of barbed wire. This is not a saying, there are really 5 of them. For the unprepared, it looks creepy, for the residents of Seversk — a common thing. All roads to and from the city pass through special checkpoints (abbreviated as KPP).
a wall of barbed wire on the border of the city
In this regard, the main document of the northerner is not the passport of the Russian Federation. The pass is our everything! You can only enter the city through a checkpoint with a special pass. “Without a piece of paper, you are a bug” (a Soviet folk saying) in our case works 100 %. If you forgot or (Oh my God!) lost your pass — you just can’t get into the city. What to do? Call relatives in the city and sit at the checkpoint, waiting for them to bring a pass. For such at the checkpoint there is a special bench, and people almost always sit on it. The city is located on the river, which means that a trip to the beach in the summer-also through the checkpoint. And that’s when the pass is easy to lose. And it can also be pulled out by thieves along with the wallet. Or you can leave it in another bag. In General, when you use a pass every day, it becomes commonplace.
special pass to a closed city, the inscription on the left — “ it is forbidden to transfer to other persons”
Every time you drive into the city, you show your pass, open the trunk and all the doors in the car. Armed military personnel are searching you, your document, and your car. Strangers are often shocked by this situation, but we are used to it, there are almost no people who are dissatisfied with the city’s regime among my friends, this is additional security in the city.
Stella at the entrance to the city
Stella at the entrance to the city, it is she who is depicted on the cover of the pass to the city. Stella is decorated with the image of the “peaceful atom” — a new concept of the city.
Seversk was founded in 1933 as an independent locality. It was then that the barracks were rebuilt and a youth labor commune was created (a normal phenomenon in the spirit of post-revolutionary Russia) with the proletarian name “Chekist”. In Russian, a Chekist is an employee of the “Cheka”(R.E.C.) or the all-Russian Emergency Commission by analogy with the current Russian name of an organization with similar functions — the FSB (Federal Security Service), probably known to you, dear reader, the Soviet secret service KGB (state Security Committee), or for example, a similar organization is the USSS. Maybe these linguistic explanations explained something to some of the readers :)
old photos of the area “security officer”. To the right, next to the new high — rise building, the oldest building in the district-a wooden hardware store-was preserved for a very long time, almost until the two thousandth years. I remember it well, a ramshackle old building with creaking floors and peeling green paint on the wood. Now in its place is a modern shopping center
Under the commune, there was a labor camp for” re-education by labor “ of idlers, parasites and other members of society who were not conscious, according to the authorities.
old photo of the labor colony building
old photo — labor colony in the commune of “Chekist”
The commune gave its name to the village in which lived the first builders of the city. After this name passed to the area of the city located here today. Now this neighborhood is the South-Eastern border of the city. There is a stadium “Trud” and a sports school, a children’s health camp, the main medical center of the city and a dacha village that runs up to the mouth of the Kirghizka river.
Seversk today: stadium “Trud” (translation - Work)
By the way, in the mouth of the Kirghizka river, which is considered the territory of Seversk, there was a monastery in about 1650, which can be considered the oldest building in the city. Alas, it lasted less than a century — as follows from the Chronicles, the monastery was destroyed and washed away by a flood in 1730. But I do not plan to go so far into history, otherwise I will have to mention the sites of primitive people and numerous finds in them found on the banks of the Tom river.
We will go back to Soviet times. In General, there were several villages on the site of Seversk. Some were transformed and became the outskirts of the city, some concrete jungles of the city just swallowed up, such as the village of Beloborodovo. It was located in the area of the current “new city” (relatively new multi-storey areas) and was formerly the outskirts of Seversk. I remember, as a child, we often rode bicycles with neighboring boys in Beloborodovo, drinking water from the pump — a stupid excuse to just roll somewhere :) The village, as such, finally disappeared in 1980.
Seversk today: Pobeda street is the widest street in the city, located in the new part of Seversk. 40 years ago there was a village Beloborodovo
Old photo, high-rise buildings of the new district absorb the old wooden houses of the village of Beloborodovo
And for example the village Iglakovo exists to this day, only transformed it in a holiday cottage complex. Now this is the western border of the residential part of the city, then the industrial zone begins.
The future Seversk began to turn into a city in 1949, shortly after the end of the terrible and bloody Second World war. Then the Council of Ministers of the USSR decided to build a plant for the production of enriched uranium and plutonium near Tomsk. The new industrial complex was originally called the “Zauralskaya office of Glavpromstroy” or Combine №816.
However, during my youth, the labor of prisoners was not used for a long time. But the construction of the young city actively involved the internal troops of the USSR — the so-called construction troops. Units of the army without high military qualifications, in which young people, soldiers of military age, mastered the peaceful construction profession. I think, during my childhood, this was the largest army category, something like reserve troops in case of an enemy attack. These soldiers-young people who served for two years after reaching the age of 18, had to learn the basics of military discipline and the basics of popular construction professions after school and College, being both a reserve of combat army units and a “free” labor force of the Soviet state. This is a tricky Soviet system, which had both negative and positive aspects… Of course, the internal troops were not the most prestigious category. All those who dreamed of military service, wanted to get into any other army. It was still completely incomprehensible and uninteresting to us boys from the eighties. For that it was interesting to get to the construction site and try to exchange for example for fried sunflower seeds or just beg for a shiny soldier’s button with a star or even better, a cockade. The king of wishes, I remember, was a soldier’s belt with a huge badge :)
a military cap with a cockade and a belt with a shiny shirt — the dream of boys in the USSR :)
An old photo of construction of Seversk. A truck tries to pull out a car stuck in a large puddle
The original code name of the “Сity-Mailbox number 5”, because the construction of the city-forming plant was named: mailbox #5, in this regard, the city was colloquially called “the Fifth Postal” or simply “Postal”. Seversk is still often called “Postal” by locals for old times ‘ sake, most of them don’t even know where it came from.
“Postal”… The famous computer trash-FPS of the same name is just a funny coincidence ;)
In 1954, the closed settlement was given the name Seversk, but later documents began to refer to it as Tomsk-7 for reasons of secrecy. That’s the name on my official birth certificate. This is my homeland. A beautiful and cozy young city, whose residents bravely forged the atomic shield of the Motherland with their own hands for several years. (irony with a huge amount of truth) The world’s second industrial nuclear power plant (NPP-1, also known as Sibirskaya) with a capacity of 100 megawatts was built in Seversk in 1958.
a cooling tower from Seversk nuclear power plant
The symbol of any nuclear power plant is a cooling tower. They cool the treated water that is fed from the reactor, then this water is discharged into the river.
The city’s secrecy status was lifted in 1989. At the same time, the city returned its name — Seversk. During the time of Gorbachev and Perestroika, secret production was reduced due to the disarmament program and ceased to be secret. Production was curtailed, and enterprises were repurposed for the production of peaceful products. The last reactor was shut down and mothballed in 2008. The production base and scientific potential of the former “military” industry is now engaged in peaceful research, primarily in the disposal of nuclear waste.
The city is still closed, although all the secrecy has long been removed. Every year, the regional administration discusses the issue of opening the city and removing the checkpoint, but so far everything is still the same. Residents see development prospects in the event of opening the city, but are aware of the possible loss of the current advantages of increased security, space and cleanliness of the city. There is no consensus among the people. This is how we live now. Yes, I forgot to mention that the city’s population is currently just over 100,000 people. In the neighboring regional center — Tomsk, which is 15 minutes away by car just over 600,000 residents. Seversk is considered the largest closed city in Russia. The city is cozy, clean, and self-sufficient. We live and work in the same way as residents of any other cities. All the infrastructure is there.
Seversk today: city streets
Seversk today: the old part of the city, winter
Seversk today: cinema “Russia”. In Soviet times, the city had three cinemas, but now with the development of television and the Internet, the interest of viewers has somewhat decreased.
Seversk today: The city is home to the largest monument to Vladimir Lenin in Siberia. It is installed on the square in front of the administration building
Perhaps it is worth noting that the people of Russia in general are calm about some historical buildings and monuments. There is no such thing that with the new trends of time something began to have a negative assessment in society and there was a need to immediately erase reminders of this from the face of the city. Even streets, as you may have noticed, are rarely renamed, although the Communist ideology has long ceased to be relevant. Well, is “Lenin” worth it and worth it to yourself, does it interfere? This is primarily a historical monument from the period of the city’s formation, we rather rethink and treat such monuments as architectural historical buildings. No, in the nineties, we also had a wave of reformers who wanted to demolish everything old for some reason, but thank God common sense still prevailed and now such objects can be safely recorded in the sights of our city, giving it its own identity.
Seversk today: the building of the city administration
Seversk today: Nikolai Ostrovsky theater in the old part of the city
old photos: on the Left, the construction of this theater, 1958, the parade on the square of the same name. On the right is a theater in the late sixties
Seversk today: authentic old streets, classic “Stalinist” buildings
Seversk today: as the antipode of the previous photo, high-rise buildings in the newest district of the city, near the river Bank. By the way this place used to be a cargo dock
Seversk today: entrance to the nature Park in the city center
Seversk today: Museum, music school, “Khrushchevskaya” building in the center of the city… and on the horizon pipes of frozen regime nuclear facilities
Since childhood, we have understood what city we live in and what can happen at any moment. This was recalled by the inscriptions on the houses “Shelter-5 m”. They were in any part of the city, installed in the basements of apartment buildings.
inscriptions on houses “Shelter-5 m”.
Such small concrete towers are found all over the city: on playgrounds, on city alleys, near the roadway. This is the ventilation system of urban shelters. When you stand next to one of these, you realize that under your feet is a network of underground corridors.
concrete ventilation towers in the city
In the lower grades of the school, training activities were also conducted on the organized issue of protective respirators and gas masks and rapid movement to the nearest shelter. Passed standards for the time of putting on a gas mask. I also remember how we were shown special posters and educational films. I can still see the “atomic shadows” from those posters. Imagine a person standing and casting a shadow on a wall. At the moment of radiation, a person evaporates, but his shadow remains. This is called the “atomic shadow”. That is, the person is no longer there, but his shadow is there.
sign “radiation” on the Bank of a small river near the city
This sign stands on the Bank of a small river, which is popularly called the Daisy. By analogy with the sign of radiation. It was from here that water was taken to cool the nuclear reactor, which produced fuel for the nuclear power plant. The water was also returned there… In the river, fish are caught, unnaturally enlarged in size, which clearly should not be eaten.
a berry “Irga”
All residents had the idea of fix-products that remove radiation from the body. For example, everyone had honeysuckle and Irga berries growing in their gardens. Everyone ate these berries in buckets. Although outside the city, many do not even know that there is such a berry — Irga.
In addition to the time, date, and temperature, the main city clock also shows the radiation level. I’m sure most of the city’s residents have no idea what level is considered normal. But in fact, the norm is 15–20 microrentgen/hour. By the way, in some Russian cities the radiation level is much higher than in our country. But if you take a walk with a dosimeter in some places around the industrial zone, you can find bad places…
Here it is worth Recalling again the excellent TV series “Chernobyl”. No, it is not perfect, it is too” Western “ conveys the communication of people — in the USSR, people did not talk like this and did not behave like this, it has a lot of “cranberries”. This term is used by the Russian audience to describe the demonstration of unreliable Western cliches and images about Russia or the USSR in the cinema. But in terms of scenery and atmosphere, the film is certainly impressive. Personally, I liked it.
All closed cities are very similar-the architecture, the location of the streets. Especially the old part of the city, which was built during the Soviet era. That is why I watch the TV series “Chernobyl” with different eyes. I watch Chernobyl, but I see Seversk.
Of particular interest is the fact that an outstanding scientist Valery Legasov once lived and worked in Seversk. Yes, the same Legasov, the main character of the series “Chernobyl”.
On the nuclear topic, I would also recommend to you, my dear reader, the Russian film “Aurora”. A very emotionally moving film with a brilliant atmosphere. If you find somewhere this movie with a translation into your native language, I highly recommend watching it!
And why did I remember movies with atomic catastrophes after a note about city clocks? Of course, because this crown is close to the residents of Seversk. In 1993, an accident occurred at the Siberian chemical combine. The explosion resulted in the release of radioactive substances into the atmosphere, and 1946 people were exposed to radiation. Index on the international scale of nuclear events INES-4.
I remember the atmosphere of suppressed fear in the city during this event, even though I was still a young boy who only had girls on his mind. And I remember how three months later, at the end of August this year, a group of schoolchildren went for a walk “around the objects”. Well, such a self-entertainment event on school holidays, a twenty-kilometer hike along the “wild” route around the regime objects. Walk, hot summer, the birds are singing. Boys flirt with girls — in General, the usual walk of youth. We have already gone quite far, almost half of the route. The path makes a sharp turn and behind the dense foliage of acacia, a group of youngsters in open summer clothes suddenly face to face with a group of adults in white protective suits, fully closed “spacesuits”, with dosimeters similar to mine detectors, which these “cosmonauts” were leading in a line along the road and roadside. We stood up, our mouths open and our eyes wide. “Spacesuits” , too, I think were taken aback, perhaps they wanted to tell us something, but because of the glass they did not hear anything. Perhaps the senior one waved his hand at us intensely, saying get out of here immediately. They ran as fast as they could. Such a funny childhood memory.
In the end, I would be happy if some of my readers, inspired by this article, wanted to visit my native Seversk for tourist purposes. Moreover, despite the status of a closed city, the administration of the Siberian Chemical plant regularly conducts excursions to the territory as part of organized tourist groups. You only need to have a group or the help of a local travel Agency in the organization. And of course extra time, the documents of all willing participants are carefully checked by the FSB :)
However, it seems to me that with the latest photos and information, I drove away any desire to come to us :) And now you see Seversk as something like this:
Seversk is not really like that!
Please remember it better this way: This is a full-length statue of a Mother and child near a children’s clinic in the city center. the monument is very old, I remember it from my childhood and I always liked it very much.

7 Post - Pandemic Ramifications Impacting Real Estate And The Economy
Although, President Donald Trump, has, on several occasions, seemed to equate the importance and value of public health (and, therefore, human life), with the hardships, financially, and economically, caused, by closing the economy, the reality is, quality leadership must balance these needs, and ramifications. Despite, the fact, public health experts, not only within this country, but, throughout the world, warn us, this pandemic will get even more horrific, unless/ until, the vast majority of people, wear a mask, and use, social distancing, the present occupant of the White House, sends mixed - messages, supports conspiracy - type, theories, and endorses, unproven/ untested, treatments and medicines/ drugs, as the miracle cure. By, refusing to focus, first, on public health needs/ dangers, his approach, not only risks additional lives, etc, but, prolongs the stresses on many businesses, and the overall economy. With that in mind, this article will attempt to, consider, review, and discuss, 7 post - pandemic, ramifications, impacting real estate, and the overall economy/ economic recovery.
1. Some areas benefit/ others harmed: Already, we have witnessed, a significant upheaval in the residential real estate market. High - rise, denser locations, are far less popular, and many suburbs, have, thus far, benefited! Will this be, an ongoing trend, or, only, a short - term, knee - jerk, reaction? The last few months, we have witnessed an explosion in the residential real estate market, in some regions, with limited available properties, and rising prices. Many bigger cities, on the other hand, have seen home prices, driven - downward! In addition, today's record - low, mortgage interest rates, are fueling this market, but, how long, will this continue?
2. Some styles/ types benefit/ others not: Thus far, commercial real estate has taken the brunt - of - the - pounding, while some parts of the residential market, has done well! We've seen more people, looking for homes, with more grounds, swimming pools, schools with smaller class - sizes, etc. Denser neighborhoods have been far less popular!
3. Will distance/ remote/ virtual working, be more prevalent: When the pandemic caused closings, many businesses moved much of their operations, off - site, and used a variety of virtual forms of working. While these have positives, and negatives, will this become a more significant trend, in the future?
4. Mortgage interest rates: How long will the real estate market, be, propped - up, and helped, by record - low, mortgage rates? While the Federal Reserve has announced, they plan to continue these low rates, for a considerable period, we have, previously, witnessed, changing policies, due to evolving needs, and conditions.
5. Changing job market/ employment: There is little doubt, we are experiencing a changing economy, job mark, and, both, the overall unemployment rate, as well as type of employment. Although, the President, often, brags about the job growth, in the last couple of months, instead of growth, it actually represents about 10 million, restored jobs, out of over 22 million, lost ones. Many studies indicate, a widening - gap, between the haves, and the have - nots! It seems, a significant percentage of businesses, which closed, will never reopen, and, to - date, we have not seen, a clear - cut, plan, to address this, proactively, sooner, rather than later!
6. Changing business environment/ types: Which industries will benefit, most, and which, might be the biggest losers? A few months ago, when the Governor of New York, suggested the need, to address infrastructure improvements, to President Trump, the President seemed unwilling, to seriously discuss, a path - forward!
7. Will post - pandemic mentality, be similar to post - Depression?: Growing up, my parents often discussed, something called, Depression mentality, which was being overly carefully, building a significant nest - egg/ security blanket, and diversifying, in order to protect oneself. After, so many, experienced, such an extreme degree of suffering, from this pandemic, not only, from a health perspective, but, also, an economic one, how will this affect their attitudes, going - forward?
The health, and economic impacts of this pandemic, have been horrific, and concerning. It should demonstrate, we need leaders, who follow science, data, and listen to the experts! Wake up, America, before it's too late!

April Life Update
Quarantine Day: 46 Books read: 10 Fewest recorded steps taken: 9 Essays written: 1 Culmulative total of cats seen on walks, but not petted: 7 Boozes consumed: innumerable Films watched: countless Hours spent mindlessly scrolling the internet for news and trash: eleventy-billion
The sunniest April on record to pour salt in the wound. It rained today and the bedroom is dark and gloomy and I am glad of the change.
Still no sign of a grocery slot but we recieved a government issue box of food supplies despite removing ourselves from the list of those most in need. There’s some guilt having received it, through no fault of our own, as well as bemusement at what constitues ‘essential supplies’. A cheerless assortment of regulation nutrition: 800g of mushy peas, a scattering of tea bags, a mountain of potatoes and two exposed and soggy from the rain toilet rolls.
I’m going to re-donate the majority of it at the local supermarket after going for my long stroll. I’ve found it too stressful to go out most days as every mother’s son seems to be training for the Olympics at the moment. My first 6am ramble was delicious; it was grey and overcast and windy. I was able to walk around and not see another soul for minutes in Greenwich Park, spend time lingering near the cherry blossoms, if not under them, obey the tape that had them roped off.
Lately heading out at the same time hasn’t been as blissful. Other people have jumped on this early morning routine and struck out with all the grumbling kids in tow. It’s too much. It gets lighter earlier everyday so I’m going to cross my fingers for rain tomorrow morning and see about heading off at 5:45.
One thing I am grateful for- no distance restrictions. If I could only move in a half mile radius like they have in effect in Bermuda, I’d be bouncing off apartment blocks. Too residential to walk comfortably and distance. Up the road I can stride across a mostly empty field, back and forth and watch the green parrots eating flowers.
What else? Saw in my 33 birthday (happy ANZAC day incidently) and chain watched all three extended edition LotR. Ordered myself some flowers online and they are blooming still. Strange what makes it through the post at the moment. Food? Not really. Flowers? YES. I still cannot smell (or taste) but they look beautiful. As a day, frankly it was glorious. I could actually enjoy it with the schools shut. Had they been open, I’d have been working all weekend, I guarantee it. Another type of guilt but one I admit to getting over pretty quickly.
No end in sight. I’m thankful I’m not being asked to come into school at the moment. I can catch up with all my university work, I can create good resources and make clear delineations between work and home. I can switch off with things complete and done and finished at the end of the day. No lesson plans to tweak endlessly.
Weirdly I haven’t been dreaming all that much. I keep seeing articles about the vivid quarantine dreams people have been having, but head has been a blank since this began. I’m usually no stranger to realistic and complex dreaming. Sleep comes and goes at the moment in the blink of an eye. The days are looooong but the nights super short. I’m barely aware that I’ve slept before I’m awake again.

Plumber Service Company in Downtown Vancouver
Plumber Service Company in Downtown Vancouver
The author is making a number of good pointers about master plumber overall in this great article below.
5 Different Types of Plumbers (Plus Tips on Hiring the Right Type)
Types of Plumbers On The Basis of Job Scale
When we talk about types of plumbers, the scale of the job is extremely important. Based on the scale of the job, plumbers can be put into one of three major categories:
Commercial Plumbers
Residential Plumbers
Service and Repair Plumbers
1. Commercial Plumbers
Plumber working on pipes.
Commercial plumbers are skilled and qualified professionals who primarily work in large commercial settings. Commercial plumbers are skilled to work in large-scale public and industrial settings like in schools, universities, large shopping malls, hospitals, factories, and manufacturing plants or any other environment that has large industrial equipment involved.
Commercial plumbers are responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of pipes and tanks in commercial and industrial buildings. Mostly, plumbers who are specialized in one particular job are not able to perform plumbing activities where different skill set and technicalities are involved. For example, if a residential plumber has to do a plumbing job in commercial buildings and factories, he won’t be able to fulfill the job as accurately as it should be done.
This is due to the lack of sufficient exposure, training, and experience. There are significant differences between each plumbing type and hence, the skill required for each type is different too. For instance, the major difference between a commercial plumber and a residential plumber is the number of pipes, tanks, and pipe outlets they encounter and deal with on a day-to-day basis.
Naturally, a commercial plumber deals with way more pipes than a residential one, and these pipes are larger and often more complicated.
For residential plumbers, the number of pipes they have to fix each day is significantly lower than commercial and service plumbers. Moreover, most of the time, residential plumbers deal with pipes fitted between two or three floors at max. However, commercial plumbers juggle between more floors, more sinks and toilets, and more complications in the piping patterns. The increased workload makes the job for commercial plumbers more time consuming and burdensome than casual residential plumbing.
Other profession-based differences include the magnitude of problems faced by a commercial plumber on a daily basis. Commercial plumbing is beyond just fixing and installing faucets and pipes; it also includes frequent extensive and large scaled waste removal procedures and water system installations for large businesses. This generally involves excavating trenches and drains and putting in pipelines, which are then linked to the main buildings and the local water reserves as well as the sewage systems. Commercial plumbing is more challenging and holds a lot more risk than residential plumbing.
Commercial plumbers are also actively involved in the regular repair and maintenance of systems that they have installed. These servicing rounds are crucial because the systems installed are expensive and require constant care and services.
2. Residential Plumbers
Plumber working on the pipe under the kitchen sink.
Residential plumbers are the plumbing professionals who you call whenever you face a plumbing problem in your home. These plumbers gain experience and training by working on apprenticeships and residential jobs like on new construction sites, housing schemes, and home renovations. They mostly acquire their skill set by working under the umbrella of plumbers that are more experienced and getting hands-on experience.
Residential plumbers mostly carry out and master the procedures of pipe system installations in residential homes and housing blocks. They are strictly involved in small scale residential plumbing jobs and do not often venture into commercial plumbing due to their lack of experience and qualification.
These residential plumbing experts are primarily involved in and responsible for ensuring the proper functioning of the water systems, pipes, and toilets in homes. They repair and service plumbing systems, houses, and residential flats to keep them running smoothly.
3. Service and Repair Plumbers
Plumber fixing a leaking pipe.
A service and repair plumber is an expert who is mostly hired for repairs and maintenance of plumbing systems at homes or commercial business. The service and repair plumbers receive technical training and are experienced in problem-solving and fixing plumbing issues. They are experts in jobs like fixing reduced pressure, leakages, cleaning, and servicing. Service and repair plumbers specialize in regular leakages and clogging issues.

REMINDER: Trump has relied on Rudy Giuliani as a "fixer" ever since Trump bribed Rudy to kill a mob-related money laundering investigation into him 30 years ago.
The late Wayne Barrett wrote about their corrupt 30-year relationship in 2016:
Peas in a pod: The long and twisted relationship between Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani
By WAYNE Barrett | Published SEP 04, 2016 5:00 AM ET | NEW YORK DAILY News | Posted September 25, 2019 |
Let's start with the fact that Donald Trump's top surrogate, Rudy Giuliani, is on the payroll. In January, he joined a law firm, Greenberg Traurig, that represents Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Last year, the firm handled Trump's suit against the Florida city of Doral so his golf course could override noise regulations that barred him from bulldozing before sunrise. More recently, it handled Kushner's $340-million acquisition of the Watchtower properties in downtown Brooklyn.
When Trump paid a $250,000 fine in 2000 for secretly funding a million-dollar lobbying campaign against an Indian casino in upstate New York, he was represented by Greenberg.
Giuliani brought Marc Mukasey, the stepson of ex-U.S. Attorney General and lifelong Giuliani friend Michael Mukasey, with him to Greenberg; Mukasey is now representing legendary leg man Roger Ailes. Mukasey launched into a tirade recently against New York Magazine reporter Gabriel Sherman, calling the Ailes biographer "a virus" willing to "use any woman" to Weinerize the Trump debate adviser. His dad, who once branded Trump a "peril" to national security, delivered a Republican Convention speech the night after Rudy's screed.
This intertwine may or may not have something to do with why the Greenberg firm lets Rudy, one of its newest partners, hired early this year ostensibly to run a cybersecurity unit, travel the country with Trump, introducing him at rallies and fundraisers, challenging Hillary Clinton's health based on stuff he finds in corners of the internet, declaring her Clinton Foundation troubles worse than Watergate, wearing a "Make Mexico Great Again Also" cap, and helping draft policy speeches diagnosing African Americans for white audiences.
I even watched Rudy on TV, before one joint trip to Ohio, loading suitcases into the back of a Trump SUV in front of Trump Tower, the only baggage that slows him down.
Rudy has actually been more visible in his buddy's campaign than he was at times in his own $50 million presidential attempt in 2008, when he managed to convert the months-long top ranking in the polls into a single delegate. The imperial 2016 candidate who hates losers, especially ones who wind up in Vietnamese prisons, has instead embraced an epic dud, his solitary act of empathy in a campaign of callousness. He could've trashed Rudy like he did John McCain: "I like people who weren't caught with their command center down."
But the onetime comb-over twins just had too much in common. Though bombs-away hawks today, they got multiple draft deferments during the Vietnam War, with athlete Donald citing bad feet as his excuse and Rudy using an ear defect to sidestep his ROTC obligations.
Trump is now warning of a rigged election, invoking the image of Philadelphia blacks cheating at the ballot box and calling for voter suppression squads to "monitor" suspect precincts. Rudy said the 1989 mayoral election he lost was stolen and spent millions on suppression squads, dispatching off-duty white cops and firefighters to minority districts, when he won in 1993.
The two amigos also spark similar antipathy in Mexico, their latest joint destination — Donald for a mantra of insults, and Rudy for a multi-million-dollar anti-crime contract his consulting company won in Mexico City that flopped so badly the police chief declared he was "no fan" of Giuliani's. Rudy even tried to lend credence to the Trumpian fantasy that "thousands" of Muslims in Jersey City celebrated 9/11, quibbling only with the number.
Then there's the wife trifecta. No one in American public life, other than perhaps their kindred spirit Newt Gingrich, has ever mastered the art of a bad divorce like Rudy and Donald, carrying on as if spousal humiliation was the point.
Ask the kids. When Trump married mistress Marla Maples nearly four years after he walked out on Ivana, the three convention stars, Don Jr., Ivanka and Eric, didn't show up. Andrew and Caroline Giuliani made strained appearances at Rudy's 2003 wedding to Judi Nathan, but in 2007, both distanced themselves from their father's presidential pursuit, with Caroline Facebooking her preference for Obama, as close to the ex-mayor's heart as she could plunge the dagger.
Rudy's wife Donna found out he wanted a divorce when he announced it on TV, just as Marla had a couple of years before. Rudy then chose Mother's Day to alert the press that he would be having dinner with his new love and led the cameras on a 10-block walk with her after dinner, kissing her goodbye while his wife and kids simmered. His divorce lawyer declared "we're going to have to pry her off the chandeliers to get her out of" Gracie Mansion. Even Donald Trump was offended, writing an open letter to New York Magazine and urging Donna and Rudy "to sit down with each other in a room, without your lawyer, and see if you can settle this."
But Rudy was only following in the divorce-as-spectacle footsteps of Donald, who'd used the New York Post as his personal hammer a decade before, relishing in Marla's "best sex I ever had" headlines even as they horrified young Ivanka and Don. Trump told Newsweek the scandal was "great for business," and pushed Marla to seize on the opportunities it presented, including half a million to pose in "No Excuses" jeans.
He'd brought his mistress to the same Atlantic City boxing matches he brought his wife to, aboard the same helicopter, just as he'd set up Marla in a sparkling suite on the Aspen slopes while he was vacationing with his family. Young Don told his father then "you just love your money," a line he did not revive in his convention script. Ivanka, shocked by headlines on newsstands during her walk to school, just wept.
Rudy and Donald first got together in the late 1980s shortly before Donald became a co-chair of Giuliani's first fundraiser for his 1989 mayoral campaign, sitting on the Waldorf dais and steering $41,000 to the campaign. A year earlier, Tony Lombardi, the federal agent closest to then-U.S. Attorney Giuliani, opened a probe of Trump's role in the suspect sale of two Trump Tower apartments to Robert Hopkins, the mob-connected head of the city's largest gambling ring.
Trump attended the closing himself and Hopkins arrived with a briefcase loaded with up to $200,000 in cash, a deposit the soon-to-felon counted at the table. Despite Hopkins' wholesale lack of verifiable income or assets, he got a loan from a Jersey bank that did business with Trump's casino. A Trump limo delivered the cash to the bank.
The government subsequently nailed Hopkins' mortgage broker, Frank LaMagra, on an unrelated charge and he offered to give up Donald, claiming Trump "participated" in the money-laundering — and volunteering to wear a wire on him.
Instead, Lombardi, who discussed the case with Giuliani personally (and with me for a 1993 Village Voice piece called "The Case of the Missing Case"), went straight to Donald for two hour-long interviews with him. Within weeks of the interviews, Donald announced he'd raise $2 million in a half hour if Rudy ran for mayor. Lamagra got no deal and was convicted, as was his mob associate, Louis (Louie HaHa) Attanasio, who was later also nailed for seven underworld murders. Hopkins was convicted of running his gambling operation partly out of the Trump Tower apartment, where he was arrested.
Lombardi — who expected a top appointment in a Giuliani mayoralty, conducted several other probes directly tied to Giuliani political opponents, and testified later that "every day I came to work I went to Mr. Giuliani to seek out what duties I needed to perform" — closed the Trump investigation without even giving it a case number. That meant that New Jersey gaming authorities would never know it existed.
It's hard to watch Giuliani invoke his 14-year history as a federal prosecutor when he calls for Clinton's prosecution and square it with the seedy launch of his own relationship with Trump.
When Rudy was mayor, Trump hired the lobbying firm that included name partner Ray Harding, the head of the state's Liberal Party, whose ballot line had provided the margin of difference in Giuliani's 1993 election. Harding's firm quickly went from three lobbying clients to 92, and it steered the controversial, 90-story Trump World Tower, the tallest residential tower in city history, through three levels of Giuliani administration approvals despite loud opposition from community groups led by Walter Cronkite.
Both Harding and his son, a top Giuliani official, wound up felons. His other son, Robert Harding, a Giuliani deputy mayor, has long been a lobbyist at Rudy's current employer, Greenberg.
The Giuliani administration also wrote a 1995 letter of support to HUD for $365 million in mortgage insurance for Trump's Riverside South project, affirming that the Westside Yards site was in a blighted neighborhood, a contention so ludicrous that Donald had to eventually withdraw the application. A board of Giuliani appointees, pushed by Harding's firm, also approved renovations at Trump's 100 Central Park South, where Eric Trump now lives.
Rudy wound up a friend, speaking at Fred Trump's 1999 funeral, doing a grope scene with Donald in a 2000 Inner Circle skit, inviting Donald and Melania to his Gracie Mansion wedding and attending Trump's 2005 Mar-A-Lago wedding.
As aligned as Trump and Rudy appear, there are enough stark differences to make the embrace uncomfortable, at least if the blank-slate broadcast interviewers would do a search or two. When Mitt Romney ran against Giuliani, he said Rudy made New York a "sanctuary city," based on Giuliani's urging undocumented people to settle in the city. PoliFact found the assertion "true."
As mayor, Giuliani was the top Republican champion of the assault-weapons ban, sued the gun industry and called for "uniform licensing" of all guns, contending that the free flow of firearms into the city from unregulated states was killing New Yorkers.
Rudy was also one of the only elected pro-choice Republicans who even supported partial birth abortion. He's recently begun to perform same-sex marriages. He is, in all of these respects, an anti-Trump surrogate.
Yet Trump has said he might name Rudy to chair an immigration commission or to head homeland security. Trump apparently forgets that Rudy already gave us one homeland security secretary, his business partner and former correction and police commissioner Bernie Kerik, who blew up like a land mine before he could take office and wound up sentenced to four years in federal prison, partly for lying to the White House.

UK Labour conference motion to fight cladding scandal News

Labour conference agrees motion to fight cladding scandal
26th September 2021 – The Labour Party has backed action in relation to the building safety crisis that has arisen since Grenfell, calling for “sustained investment” in public services that could help resolve the crisis and prevent it continuing in new buildings.
Labour conference agrees motion to fight cladding scandal
The party took the step through the passing of a motion at its conference today. The motion calls for “more sustained investment in local authority building control, in fire service fire safety teams, fire inspectors and in other public agencies required to ensure building safety”, and opposes “privatisation, deregulation and contracting out” of these services. These services will help detect building safety issues in existing buildings and help prevent them arising in future buildings.
In the Labour conference debate on the motion Rosa Crowley-Bennett, a serving firefighter and Fire Brigades Union member, said “One story that stays with me is from my old station area in Moss Side, Manchester. My crew and I were carrying out a high rise building visit after the Grenfell Tower Fire. We were knocking on doors and providing safety advice to residents. One resident on the 5th floor told me that she had become so terrified of the fire risk and apparent lack of progress to address this, that she had bought a rope ladder which she planned to use to escape from a window in the event of a fire”.
Grenfell Tower building in West London:
The motion states that there “remains a deep, unresolved crisis in building safety”, and notes that hundreds of thousands are “trapped” in unsafe buildings, with “tenants and leaseholders expected to pay the price” for the crisis.
The motion also recognises that “four years on from the Grenfell Tower fire, there is still no justice for the bereaved, survivors and residents”, says that the party “stands in solidarity with the firefighters who attended” the fire, and backs cladding campaigners.
The motion was brought to Labour Party conference by the Fire Brigades Union.
Matt Wrack, general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, said that: “People up and down the country are stuck in homes, schools and offices which are death traps. To say that is unacceptable is a huge understatement, and we are glad that the Labour Party has come together and backed action that will help resolve this situation.
“More than four years after the fire, the courage and strength of the bereaved, survivors and residents of Grenfell as they fight for justice and safer buildings is clear to all of us. We at the FBU stand shoulder to shoulder with them in their fight.”
Rosa Crowley-Bennett, a serving firefighter and member of the Fire Brigades Union, said in her speech to conference proposing the motion: “On the 14th June 2017 the fire at Grenfell Tower claimed the lives of 72 people. It devastated a close-knit, working class community in the heart of London. My colleagues in London worked tirelessly in impossible conditions in the face of an unprecedented fire.
“This tragedy also marked the beginning of a national scandal which still continues to unfold in front of our eyes.
“In all the discussion of regulation and legislation, we must never forget that this debate is about real people, with real fears, suffering grave injustices in what should be one of the most basic of rights: the right to a decent and safe home.”
The building safety crisis
• In the years following the Grenfell crisis it has become clear that many buildings across the country are unsafe in relation to fire safety, with issues including flammable cladding, issues with building cavities, and issues with escape routes.
• This crisis has had two main impacts, with homes, schools and offices continuing to be unsafe and some homeowners facing potential costs of tens of thousands of pounds to remedy the issues.
• The government has committed around £5 billion to go towards fixing the crisis. But there are limitations around this money, including limited availability for social housing providers and the fact that the fund is only meant for cladding. Moreover, the Housing, Communities and Local Government has estimated that the crisis will cost £15 billion to fix – and that’s just for residential buildings alone.

Grenfell Tower fire: hold ministers and contractors to account
Conference notes that more than four years after the Grenfell Tower disaster there remains a deep, unresolved crisis in building safety, trapping hundreds of thousands in unsafe buildings, with tenants and leaseholders expected to pay the price for rectifying safety problems caused by building owners, developers and contractors.
On 14 September, the Building Safety Bill committee heard witnesses arguing to continue with the deregulated, privatised regime, which undermined local authority building control and fire inspectors.
The Grenfell Tower Inquiry, which resumed on 20 September, is reaching a critical stage. Four years on from the Grenfell Tower fire, there is still no justice for the bereaved, survivors and residents.
Conference supports tenants and residents campaigning for remedy as a result of the cladding scandal.
Conference commends the work of Labour’s shadow team and Labour MPs scrutinising the government’s Fire Safety Act and Building Safety Bill, to ensure the public are protected by building safety regulation.
Conference stands in solidarity with the firefighters who attended the Grenfell Tower fire.
Conference supports the work of the FBU and other core participants representing the bereaved, survivors and residents in the Inquiry, who are fighting for politicians and contractors to be held to account for the cladding and other safety breaches.
Conference resolves to campaign for more sustained investment in local authority building control, in fire service fire safety teams, fire inspectors and in other public agencies required to ensure building safety.
Conference further resolves to oppose privatisation, deregulation and contracting out of such services.

A complete timeline of how Bishop Sycamore fooled ESPN
Here’s how we reached this point.
A high school showcase game has sparked a high school sports scandal in one of the most remarkable stories of the year. The “school,” Bishop Sycamore, was scrutinized after a 58-0 loss on ESPN that left announcers appalled and fans bewildered at how and why a team this bad was allowed to compete on national television.
In the wake of those fairly innocuous questions, we’ve been led down a remarkable path that continues to get more bizarre with each passing day. If you’ve been struggling to understand this whole debacle, let’s break it down.
Fall, 2018
Roy Johnson, who would eventually become head coach of Bishop Sycamore, starts an online charter school called “Christians of Faith Academy.” The school has an identical goal as Bishop Sycamore would go on to have, helping at-risk youth. After scrutiny by state officials, it was impossible to determine whether classes were actually taking place, and the school’s license was eventually revoked. Johnson was investigated for alleged fraud.
2019
“YouthBuild Centurions” is foundered in Columbus, Ohio — a rebranding of the Christians of Faith Academy. This was another online charter school with a football team which served as its public face. The school would later rebrand again, this time as “Bishop Sycamore.” A 2020 article by The Independent notes that Bishop Sycamore went 5-6 in its first season against a schedule that only features one Ohio school, adding that the school was not a member of the Ohio State Athletic Association, and has been a “lightning rod” for controversy in the local community.
September 23, 2019
The YouthBuild Centurions have a match cancelled when a school in West Virginia learns they have numerous players on the roster over the age of 18.
September 4, 2020
Bishop Sycamore plays its first recorded football game on Max Preps, losing 35-0 to a non-conference opponent.
Ahead of the game, athletic director Dave Brown speaks to The Independent about his approach to building the team, which curiously notes that he doesn’t want players or coaches to look up information about the team online. “I try to encourage our athletes and our coaching staff to stay off of the internet,” Brown says, a curious concept considering Bishop Sycamore is an online school.
October 16, 2020
Bishop Sycamore plays IMG Academy for the first time in their season finale. Bishop Sycamore loses 56-6, finishing the 2020 season 0-6, with their closest game being a 37-14 loss. Bishop Sycamore and IMG Academy will meet in less than a year on ESPN.
April, 2021
Bishop Sycamore spins up its online hype machine through a website which has since been shut down, showing it’s “closed for maintenance.” In it, nothing is mentioned of educational goals, or support for students. Instead the only information available is a series of blog posts detailing upcoming private workouts for college teams, and how the school recommends players create highlight clips to be noticed.
August 19, 2021
Bishop Sycamore opens its 2021 season with a 38-0 loss to Archbishop Hoban.
August 27, 2021
Bishop Sycamore plays Ro-Sox in Pennsylvania, losing 19-7
August 29, 2021
Bishop Sycamore plays IMG Academy on ESPN. The school is clearly outmatched and unable to keep up. During the game the announce team expresses its disgust at the situation, insinuating the network had been promised the school had numerous football players with D1 athletes, but clearly based on the game they do not. Furthermore there are questions about the safety of the players on the field against the bigger, stronger and more skilled IMG.

— BuckeyeScoop.com (@kirk_barton) August 29, 2021
People begin digging into the history of Bishop Sycamore, learning not only was there never a Bishop Sycamore as a person — but almost nothing is known about the school. Ben Koo of Awful Announcing leads the charge investigating the school, being the first to point out they played two games in three days. Koo also questioned ESPN over how the school was put on TV, learning they trusted Paragon Marketing Group, a third party company to make the matchup.
August 30, 2021
As people begin to dig more into Bishop Sycamore, the more suspect the school becomes. It has two listed addresses. One appears to be a house in a residential area, the other is the library at Franklin University in Columbus.
This is the listed address of Bishop Sycamore, the school Duncanville is playing on 9/10. It appears to be a duplex. The other address listed on their MaxPreps accounts lists the Franklin University library building as an address. pic.twitter.com/6Zl0KDRbrO
— Texas Football Life (@TXFBLife) August 30, 2021
August 31, 2021
Bishop Sycamore fire head coach Roy Johnson, who started this ball rolling back in 2018.
Athletic director Andre Peterson fires back at claims he’s running a “scam,” because, as he tells USA Today Sports “I’m not gaining anything financially from doing this.” It should be noted that as of August 30 there was an active GoFundMe trying to raise $20,000 for Bishop Sycamore, which has since been shut down. It received $140.
Bishop Sycamore closes its website, saying it’s “down for maintenance.” Archives of past articles are still available via WaybackMachine.
Schools begin backing out of scheduled games against Bishop Sycamore.
