Billboard USA Exclusion Zone Episode 13 (05/27/2023)
You know, I thought that I will be overwhelmed by this week. I mean we got Eurovision this week and just how massive the first two Eurovision was in this decade. So color me surprised that we didn't get an onslaught of Eurovision songs. Though some of them might have to do with them have debuted before so I have talked about it (check it out in my bio). But this means that it made this week manageable at least.
-----------------------------------------------------
11. "Acrostico" by Shakira
Actually we won't be starting with an Eurovision song, instead we have a heartfelt ballad from Shakira and her kids. I'm so glad that this song exist. Not only because she's making music again on her own, but also as a healing process from her divorce.
13. "Cha Cha Cha" by Kaarija
From heartfelt to the downright batshit insane. This is basically the Zitti e Buono of 2023 but it didn't win the whole thing which is a robbery. It would've been great if Finnish language actually existed.
29. "Queen of Kings" by Alessandra
This is basically just what happened when you mixed Billie Eilish with pirate theme music soundtracking your local League of Legends tournament.
37. "The Planet" by BTS
Seems like BTS saw the success of Arcane and Imagine Dragon and thought "yes this soundtracking animated movie will turned out well". And it's as expected as what "BTS soundtracking animated film" would sound like.
46. "All My Life" by Lil Durk ft. J Cole
I'm of two minds about this song. On one hand, the subject matter here is just perfect where both Durk and Cole talking about a lot of systemic issues during the come up with interesting details. Durk referencing how stimulus check works in his environment and how he's trying to better himself which is a plus in my opinion. While Cole in the middle of talking about his legacy, talk about how the media talked and hyperfocusing on rapper's death and how people weren't paying attention to them before it's too late. On the other hand, this beat is kinda suck. One thing that I've learned over the years is that Dr. Luke shouldn't producing trap rap song. Like seriously just some keys, trap drums, and sub bass? Also we don't need to bring back child choir again. I guess we'll see if this song will grew on me, but right not it's just on the upper side of decent.
81. "Queencard" by (G)I-DLE
Ahhh yes this is the Kpop shit I love. Garrish, a lot of personalities with no substance, and ridiculous. It's the same reason why I love HIP by MAMAMOO and while this song is slightly worse, I can't deny the groove here.
142. "Dog Days Are Over" by Florence + The Machine
Finally my critical card has been upgraded since I'm reviewing a Florence + The Machine stuff! Well anyways this song is definitely a perfect send off (or in this case dance off) to a movie franchise.
153. "Unicorn" by Noa Kirel
First off Free Palestine. Secondly, I think if you want to justify your inclusion in the Eurovision Israel, you should just remake Toy for the rest of your country's life because this ain't it.
168. "Cartao Black" by MC Caverinha e KayBlack
Seems like dreary trap banger will be universal even in different language. Also seems like I need to learn more Portuguese and Spanish more because I can at least marginally pronounced the words.
175. "Soweto" by Victony, Rema & Tempoe ft. Don Toliver
It's kinda mad that this is the first time I talked about afrobeat song in my review series even though I really love it. I think everything about Afrobeat I love so I might be biased here but man the guitar and that drum is just heavenly. Also Don Toliver is actually perfect in afrobeat it's insane.
192. "Danza Kuduro" by Don Omar & Lucenzo
How the hell does this song didn't debut during the world cup? This song is basically a jock jam for me.
193. "Abcdario" by Eden Munoz X Junior H
...it's fine
199. "Life Goes On" by Ed Sheeran ft. Luke Combs
I have a lot of contender of best songs of 2023, but we have another contender here. As someone who also lost a friend and during the pandemic even, I can feel the emotion here unlike say Eyes Closed. This version is just soul crushing and if this is gonna be his last hit before he went indie or even retired, then what a way to go dude. Take care Ed.
I highly recommend everyone to listen to these songs.

British-Ghanaian rapper Fuse ODG has released a new track titled We Know It's Christmas (Band Aid Reply), an "alternative" to the famous Band Aid track Do They Know It's Christmas?. The new single came out on Tuesday and has already received a lot of attention for its strong message and intent. Fuse ODG, Afrobeats artist, explained that his latest work is so much more than just a song; it is a declaration. In this particular song, he declares against the traditional narrative of Africa and how he believes it has been made over time through a history of misrepresentation. Fuse ODG has not been shy in criticizing the original Band Aid song, which was created in 1984 by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia. The singer says that while the charity side of the initiative was good-intentioned, it ultimately kept in place some of the bad stereotypes about Africa. "Do They Know It's Christmas?" portrayed the continent as a helpless, hungry, and poor place. This has contributed to an even broader image of Africa as a place that's always in need of external assistance. Ameyaw Debrah, CC BY-SA 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0, via Wikimedia Commons Fuse ODG describes this as damaging, mainly because of Africa's rich cultural, economic, and historical worth. In the release of We Know It's Christmas, Fuse ODG offers an Afrobeats-driven response that shifts focus toward a more positive, empowering portrayal of Africa. “We’re no longer waiting for charity; we’re building our own futures,” he said, emphasizing that the song is a statement of empowerment and progress. He believes that a part of Afrobeats music has been the rise and rise in unifying Africa, fostering pride in all that makes African culture vibrant and lively. The rapper went further to explain that a part of this new track is, as part of a far greater attempt to "reclaim the narrative" for Africa. He believes it is a step towards regenerating the identity of the continent and placing it on an investment, tourism, and cultural exchange map. This is about empowerment, pride, and showing the world that Africa's story is far more than poverty and aid, says Fuse ODG. The singer expressed his desire for a shift in the view of the world toward Africa - from despair to hope and growth. All the proceeds from We Know It's Christmas go to the New Africa Growth and Relief Fund, an initiative that was created by Fuse ODG himself. The fund creates a long-term financial safety net for the continent, aiming for sustainability rather than trying to fill the short-term gap. As such, Fuse ODG has the hope of contributing to the economic independence of the continent as it grows into its future. This is in the wake of comments by pop star Ed Sheeran, who had distanced himself from Band Aid 40, the 2014 version of the charity single. Sheeran said he had not been approached for permission to lend his voice and that if he had been, he would have "respectfully declined." His response was in line with what Fuse ODG said about the Band Aid project, emphasizing that though the intentions were good, the song did not capture the complexity of the issues facing Africa. Reflecting on the past, Fuse ODG revealed that he had turned down the opportunity to feature in the 2014 remake of *Do They Know It's Christmas? *, a move based on his conviction that charity songs of this nature, no matter how well-intentioned, contribute to stereotypes. For Fuse ODG, such stereotypes depict Africa as a continent forever in crisis, which, in turn, belittles its economic and cultural development. These, he said, "sympathy and donations" don't help in the long run. They actually hinder Africa's economic growth, limit its tourism potential, and discourage investment. While conceding that the public's generosity in response to the original *Do They Know It's Christmas? * The efforts were coming from a genuine place based on an awful humanitarian emergency, said Fuse ODG, as images of such media projects normally have to stay in our collective psyches a long, long time; by contrast, his use of art that talks positively about resiliency in Africa diversity and a brighter future defined by African choice will incite the fresh generation away from this prison. This release by Fuse ODG in We Know It's Christmas reflects his wider mission to empower Africans and amplify their voices. It's a call to action, in a way, to take the African stories and make sure they are showcased as being full of vibrancy and success that the continent can achieve. He clarifies his mission: the need to provide an alternative to the familiar narrative often given to Africa, telling a story of perpetual struggle and instead celebrating the successes of Africa and its talent and possibilities. Through his music and activism, Fuse ODG is leading a movement that encourages Africans to embrace their power and redefine their futures. With We Know It's Christmas, he has taken another step in his journey of reclaiming the narrative, showing the world that Africa's true story is one of growth, strength, and opportunity. EB's 'SLIPPING feat. bandanabloom, Kevin Forest & Swxrd blends hip hop with Bossa Nova
EB - SLIPPING (REMAKE) feat. bandanabloom, Kevin Forest & Swxrd
youtube
Hip Hop is now exploring new genres and fusion of cultures. There is a new wave of artists that are experimenting with culture to incorporate jazz, bossa nova, afrobeat and other genres into their music. This allows the genre to continue building on its foundation while continuing to evolve.
One artist that I recently listened to who is looking to break barriers by pushing his boundaries is EB with his new single 'SLIPPING (REMAKE) [feat. bandanabloom, Kevin Forest & Swxrd]'
This single is catchy and melodic, with smooth vocal harmonies that are uplifting. The vocalist demonstrates a wide vocal range filled with expression. But the most powerful shift happens towards the end of the song where this amazing Bossa nova rhythm comes into play. The artists blend traditional Brazilian rhythms with more harmonically complex jazz harmony making a song that is innovative and inspiring.
The Bossa Nova is a genre of Brazilian music that combines elements of jazz, pop and samba. This song takes those elements and adds a unique twist to them making this song feel fresh and inspiring.
This breaks the mold and creates something special that I really crave to hear more of. This group of artists have opened a door for me and invited me to take a look behind the curtain to see what other surprises they have in store for inquisitive fans.

The artist Emmanuel ‘EB’
Hi, my name is Emmanuel, but my artist name is EB. I've been doing music ever since I was 13 (I'm 19 now), and I was never really all that satisfied with my craft until pretty recently.
Being around the 757, you would think that there would be a lot of musical opportunities with people doing the same types of alternative non-conformist music I would often do (especially with frontiers of sound like Pharrell, Timbaland, Pusha T, Bink, and many others), but I stuck out, and as a result, I kept to myself on most occasions. I did, however, have the internet.
I have gone through a bunch of music groups which were all created from the comforts of the online realities we are all connected to, and, to no avail, there was no real success. Things usually faded away or simmered down to a depressing whisper, and most of the time, I was left with myself to figure out where to go from there.
I've met a lot of great people I'm still in contact with to this day from a lot of these groups, but a lot of things really went nowhere. My latest endeavor with "Manipulated Records", a collective with a bunch of kids just like me, rather than a label, was something so close to what I wanted, with a huge trip that happened last year summer to Dallas (there's going to be a documentary and a possible music drop with all of that), but the group went in a state of inactivity after Dallas, and had a massive blow after one of the members, Salem McLaren, passed away in an accident in October.
I left the group, and worked on a project with a bunch of people from my past groups, titled "Sorta Flying...REMADE~!!!", which was released on February 23rd, describing my experiments and experiences for myself these last couple of years. It is a remake of one of my older works titled "Sorta Flying", with four extra songs and new arrangements.
One of the songs I am presenting to you in this submission is the first song, "SLIPPING (REMAKE)", which was released as a single on February 16th. It is an experimental synthy jazz hip-hop song, which transitions to a bossa nova song in Spanish.
What is Bossa nova?
Bossa nova is a Brazilian genre of music that literally means 'new flair' or 'new trend' in Portuguese. It emerged in the 1950s and '60s fusing elements of samba—a popular music genre within Brazil—with American jazz traditions. The sound uses traditional Brazilian rhythms but with more harmonically complex jazz harmony and more melodic dissonance. This is characterized by a "different beat" that altered the harmonies with the introduction of unconventional chords and an innovative syncopation of traditional samba from a single rhythmic division. The "bossa nova beat" is characteristic of a samba style and not of an autonomous genre.
This song was made in collaboration with bandanabloom, Kevin Forest and Swxrd, and I mixed, mastered, and structured the whole song. It explores one of the main themes that is present throughout the project: a loss of childhood innocence and trying to regain it in the present, rather than getting lost in the nostalgia of a falsely led past.
