Octavia Estelle Butler, named for her mother Octavia Margaret and her grandmother Estella, is the triumph of the Black Girl Nerd.
The shy, bookish daughter of a family a mere one generation removed from sharecroppers, was born in Pasadena, CA in 1947. From a young age, she used books as an escape, even carrying around a pink journal where she would write down her dreams and short stories.  “I usually had very few friends, and I was lonely,” Butler said. “But when I wrote, I wasn’t.”
In her pursuit of literary escape, Octavia discovered science fiction. Through the works of authors like Theodore Sturgeon, Ursula K. Le Guin and Frank Herbert, Octavia found refuge in a childhood full of bullying and isolation. When she was 12, she saw this truly heinous film called The Devil Girl From Mars and proceeded to write what I can only assume was a fix-it-fic inspired by it (really what she said was the the movie was so bad, she was certain she could tell a better story, but come on...she wrote proto-fanfic. She was probably down with FFN and LiveJournal). When she discovered that she could actually make money with her writings, the fuse was lit.
Octavia Butler would go on to write 12 novels and a collection of short stories, including Kindred, The Parable series, and The Patternist series, which includes my personal favorite Butler work, Wild Seed. Octavia Butler would become the first black woman to have a scifi novel published, and is hailed as the Mother of Afro Futurism.
The world lost a shining talent on February 24, 2006 when Octavia died of what has alternatively been reported as a stroke or a head injury resulting from a fall. Although in her lifetime, Octavia's work had been underappreciated, more and more people are encountering her work and several adaptations of her novels have been planned, starting with Hulu's Kindred adaptation, which was released in December 2022.

She has once again reminded us of something most of us learned with the late Diana Spencer: while couched in incredible privilege, to be the Princess of Wales is no fairytale.
Once you sign on to be a part of ‘the Firm,’ your every move, your every single word will be scrutinized and – whatever you do or don’t do – you are bound to have your fair share of very vocal haters.
Kate Middleton became a shining example after rogue Prince Harry turned his mud-slinging upon her: first saying she ‘encouraged him to dress like a Nazi for a party,’ then – worse – implying she had been racist towards his still unborn son Archie, inquiring just ‘how dark his skin would be.’
Those are claims that could easily stain her reputation as future queen were it not for the fact that, soon after this, it was revealed that Kate was undergoing tough chemotherapy to fight an undisclosed form of cancer found after she underwent abdominal surgery in February.
After that, she struggled for some privacy as the Kingdom – and the world – expected her to suffer in public.
Kate made her first public appearance in June at an annual military parade to mark the birthday of King Charles, and after that attended the Wimbledon tennis championships.
But now, Kate has announced today that she has finished her course of preventative chemotherapy for cancer.
She said that her path to full recovery would be long, and her focus was to remain cancer-free.
The video was filmed last month in Norfolk, eastern England, and the princess looked well and healthy.

Adora - Long Lost Princess of Eternia, Force Captain ( former ), Daughter of Hordak and Shadow Weaver, and She-Ra. 20 yrs old, 5'0, was abducted as an infant, from her home planet, and taught to be a solider for the Horde. raised by Shadow Weaver and Hordak ( it's separate care, not romantically coded ). unofficial caretaker of Catra.
she was raised to be very serious and no-nonsense like, always remaining calm and strategic in drastic situations to prevent the worst case scenario. due to this built-in stoicism, along with other factors, Adora struggles with interpersonal relationships and knowing her own sense of self, including what she is or isn't comfortable with ( such as unnecessary conflict ).
before She-Ra is even a possibility, the weight of the world was already bestowed upon her shoulders, and she sets on carrying out her duty to protect the world from those who wish to harm it.
beneath it all, however, Adora is a young woman who desires connection and peace. she secretly hopes for that to be her reward.
design would be inspired by Cal, Zav 1, Zav 2, Zav 3, and Fern ( blue guy ) by animatorroseoak, Midas by sleeepybacon, and with these details by me! outfit color palette would go from black and red to white, gold, and blue. just to clarify, though she is mythical, she'd still be afro-latino coded.

Glimmer - Princess of Brightmoon, Daughter of Queen Angella and King Micah, and Leader of the Rebellion. 19 yrs old, 5'6, was raised by her widowed mother ever since she was an infant. due to her lineage, she is a demigod and will likely live longer than the average Etherian.
ever since she was born, Glimmer's powers were too great for her body to handle, causing her to lose control very quickly, especially when her emotions were heightened. Angella brought her to Castaspella, her aunt and the greatest sorceress on Etheria, to teach her control and balance.
Glimmer has always been a bright mind with an even brighter personality, striving for excellence and success, and has never let her misfortunes, whether it be her powers going haywire or a plan not going through, weigh on her. at least, that's what she shows to her people and mother.
but, on the inside, she is actually very insecure over her lack of understanding of her own powers, what her mother thinks of her, and how she can handle being future Queen. afraid of change and what fate could hold for her, Glimmer is avoidant of talking about her upcoming role to Brightmoon, seeing Castaspella again ( they haven't talked in years ), or taking a break from her leadership in the Rebellion.
design would be inspired by Ube by kleahvii, Mika by kienan_lafferty, Marlowe & Buwa by sleeepybacon. high focus on the astral theming, with minor details of the angelic theme. i imagine her with either pinkish blonde hair or black hair with pink and blue ombre streaks. her species would be a hybrid of elf ( Micah ) and chimera ( Angella ).

Bow - Guardian of Whispering Woods, Friend of Madame Razz, Best Friend of Princess Glimmer's, Son of George and Lance, and Co-Leader of the Rebellion. 20 yrs, 6'0, is a runaway from home after a particularly bad argument ensued between himself and his family. he is a pacifist and uses his archery to assist, not to cause harm ( or, at least, irreversible harm ).
his reasons for running away aren't exactly known, even to Glimmer herself, and he always gives half-truths or not-necessarily-lies to anyone who asks about his family and history. but he is very open about his beliefs, his current living situation ( currently resides in the Whispering Woods ), and how he feels.
as the Rebellion's mechanic and stealth strategist, Bow uses his technological intelligence and creativity to aid his allies. he's proven time and time again to be reliable, intuitive, and thinking of just about everything. whether or not that's a good thing.
in contrast to his secrecy, Bow is open-minded, well-meaning, and has a very strong belief in kindness. after living in the Whispering Woods on his own for a few years, and experiencing hardships unbeknownst to anyone else, he aims to be the example for others that people weren't for him.
design would be inspired by Jequ and Agnes by dewfroq, and Earth-42 Miles Morales in Across The Spiderverse. i think i want to make him a cyborg-type of character.

Angella - Queen of Brightmoon, Mother of Princess Glimmer, Widowed Wife of King Micah, and Angel of Etheria. 47(?) yrs old, 7'5, her exact origins are unknown, even to her daughter. some speculate that she was born from a star or moon, others guess she is from a different dimension entirely. the only one who even had an idea was the late King Micah.
benevolent, calm, and wise, Angella has been Queen for longer than she has been anything else. in some ways, she considers that a blessing. in others, she considers it a curse. accepting her fate decades ago, the pain has dulled enough to be barely noticeable.
though most don't know it, she has lived way longer than almost any of the Etherians, having experienced more than the Horde's genocide and eventual war. maybe even the universe beyond Despondos.
her abilities align, though not rely on, with the moons and stars, especially with specific constellations. but, as Despondos has a lack of those constellations ( and there are much less stars in the sky ), Angella has not reached her full power in decades.
it's only to Glimmer that she shows her true self, the self that is curious, easily endeared, and overall heartful and passionate, which is a stark contrast to the all-knowing, mysterious, powerful being that is the Queen of Brightmoon. because of this, her daughter has a hard time explaining to others that her mother isn't as stonewalled as she appears.
design would be inspired by Lucifer by fourleafisland, Sera by idolomantises, and Lifegiver and Sold Adopt Design by sleeepybacon. she is a flight-based chimera that has a lot of astral and angel theming, with her facial features obscured by a secondary, smaller set of wings.

Hordak - Emperor of the Fright Zone, Father of Adora, The 'Big Boss'. 55 ( appearance wise ), 6'7, his origins are about as unknown as Angella's. it's unknown if he even likes or dislikes to discuss it, as no one has dared to ask him about his life before the Horde.
having brought Etheria to its knees decades ago, Hordak is easily bored or disinterested in his surroundings, often indulging himself in sadism for entertainment. however, he does have a soft spot for his children, Imp and Adora, and finds enjoyment in their company.
when She-Ra comes around, he isn't all that irritated. in the beginning, at least. in fact, he's rather riveted by the new challenge. discovering her identity, however, made all the difference. now, he constantly has to pick between being a father and being an Emperor.
design would be inspired by Fei by cronchy_baguette, Jacks by par0llel, Unnamed OC by crazycomet107, and Miguel O'Hara Illustration by sairasays. his design would definitely be a mix of cyborg and beast, lots of predator and prey metaphors.

Shadow Weaver - Sorceress of the Fright Zone, Second In Command, Mother of Adora and Catra. 50(?), 5'11, was raised in the Crimson Waste, but ran away and became a student in Mystacor at a young age. after obtaining the dark arts, however, she was banished and considered a freak of nature. soon after, she was found by Hordak.
the 'freak of nature' title didn't leave, however. rather, Shadow Weaver had to embrace it in order to become immune, using her dark magic to protect and provide for herself and whatever or whoever she needs to succeed or gain power.
she keeps most, if not all of her relationships at arms length, paranoia and trust issues running deep. though this doesn't exclude her daughters, Adora and Catra, it's less so with them. even if it's for separate reasons.
after Adora turned on the Horde, this instilled Shadow Weaver's already unstable mindset and kicked it into overdrive. obsessive, aggressive, and erratic in behavior, she eventually becomes a danger to herself and others.
design would be inspired by Peter Pan & Captain Hook Illustrations by sairasays, The Heads and The Witch by kelpible, and Arek ( 3rd form ) by sleeepybacon. her design would be parallel to her life as Light Spinner.

Catra - Cadet of the Horde ( former ), Force Captain, Daughter of Shadow Weaver. 19 yrs, 5'7, was abducted as a toddler and taught to be a solider, though succession rates are varying. she was originally born in a Kingdom, but her memories are limited and she's rather uninterested ( or unmotivated, it's not clear ) in finding out where she's from.
as she was raised by Shadow Weaver, Catra became an odd mix of codependent, lazy, defiant and aggressive, borderline sadistic, obsessive, and jealous, driving away most people, which only solidified her unhealthy relationships.
once Adora left the Horde, she was no better than her mother, in terms of mental decline, and it was part of the reason why she became Force Captain. unofficially speaking.
design would be inspired by Eralisto by animatorroseoak, Bacon 1 and Bacon 2 by sleeepybacon, Cairo by cronchy_baguette, and Elliot by spam0_llel. i like to think her design becoming more and more feral // unhinged as she develops.

Scorpia ( Lynda ) - Force Captain, Ex-Warrior of the Crimson Waste, Sister of Octavia, Harbinger of Poison. 21 yrs, 6'3, a fighter with a tough exterior, but a gentle soul. once she gets to know you, anyway. in her time in the Horde, she has formed a bond with Octavia and knew of Catra and Adora, but hadn't met them personally until Catra becam Force Captain.
after running away from the Crimson Waste after killing the leader, Scorpia was recruited by Hordak for her strength and poison // paralytic touch. though, it wasn't exactly like she had a choice.
when meeting Catra, the two were at arms-length for a while, with Scorpia being a little off-put by the other's intensity in bringing Adora back. but, somehow, they eventually become friends. as much as they could be, anyway, considering the circumstances.
design would be inspired by Gora ( tall, dark-haired goliath ) by pen.lilixeesketche and Tora and Gabu by par0llel. i read up the original character's details and decided to have kind of a 'mish-mash' of the original and reboot ( not quite, though ).

Entrapta ( Es'Tra ) - The Fae of Entanglement, Lady of Dryll, Heart of Technology. Late 40s ( forgot specific age ), 4'10, works for the Horde as their technician, isolated and muted, but finds comfort in the Emperor's company. when he has time for that.
no one really knows why or how she got there, but it's evident that she's chronically exhausted and has a habit of becoming hostile with those who don't respect her space ( it's how she met Catra one on one ). when she's in a better mood, however, she's more likely to talk, but not guaranteed, and shows to always have more knowledge than anyone would expect.
in the rare instances she's completely happy, Entrapta is very friendly, engaging, and there's an increased percentage she'll share technology // technological-know-how with you.
design would be inspired by Bitten Lady and Faubron by animatorroseoak, Eris by boots.oc, and Remi by par0llel. lots of plant cycle symbolism in her environments and hair.

Double Trouble ( Rebekk ) - Diamond of Mischief, Multi-Mask, Fae of Deceit. Early 20s ( exact age is unknown ), 5'11, a busybody that absolutely hates the Horde, which helps them not give a damn about anything more than bare minimum privacy, and who also happens to be Glimmer's cousin, adopted by Castaspella.
when they're not busying spying on the Horde, Double Trouble spends time working on their own plays and shows or trying to play around with their peers, being a generally needy person that craves attention and validation. it's not hard to make them happy, though. usually, a simple compliment makes their entire day.
none of their family knows of their work, though. and they'd like to keep it that way.
design would be inspired by Rue by lizard_b.rain, Thraniavas by spidertams, Cantaluse by animatorroseoaks, and Original Character Animation by kelapabiru. a random design tidbit that doesn't really matter, i like to think their hair is dyed blonde, but they have brown // black roots.

Namjoon: He recognize he was making music from a different place back then. He was running towards he dreams and brushing them with the tip of his finger. He was making music from both a place of pain and of inner peace from careful reflection. There was peace in the midst of questions, there was passion in the midst of grey matter products. His art comes from his mind, hopes and hurts and is filtered through his heart to become this skillful expression of self as a human being. Hoseok: " I was really trying, wasn't I ?". He was really a beginner at the time, or at least he felt like it. He wanted to make a mark, to express who he is within that careful persona of J-Hope . He wanted to make his album a fair expression, but that would be authentic and clever at the same time. He meant it to be a celebration of his image, something that would bring joy to those who listens to him, and would overall correspond to his idea of Hope, which is ultimately what he wants to bring.
Yoongi: Holy shit ??? Min Yoongi ??? I had an idea of the energy I would get but the cards bro ??? AND STAY ALIVE JUST STARTED PLAYING ???? MIN YOONGI. STOP IT OMG. So, Tower Rev., Ten of Swords, Page of Swords, Queen of Swords, Nine of Swords, The Emperor, The Sun, Death.

Actually yes, let me explain.
So, to Yoongi, making his solo music is all abotu healing all the pain and chaos and scary, traumatic situations. His first album in particular was the majority of this first step, of coming back into the past not as a trauma behavior, bt in order to see the truth in it, to cut through what is real and what not, to express it skillfully. And the gods know he did an incredible job at it. He made it clear, so that we could all see our pain clearly from the mirror and magnifying glass he put on himself right in front of us. The second part, which somewhat correspond to his second album, is abotu being able to reflect on that past without feeling that pain anymore. The pain has now turned into fear. Fear of others, fear of the future, of our shadow side (Daechwita MV) and our ourselves. Facing our nightmare with greater maturity than before (Page then Queen) and coming out of it more stable within ourselves and outside. Self-Empowerment from being able to weaken yourself and see the worst version of you, when everything else is stripped from you under your eyes. The third part is both more general and a good closing of this cycle. Music is now about finding happiness and peace, joy . About transmutation, about deep self transformation to you who you deserved to be all along.

As a black Person Growing Up Myself, It has been a beautiful journey road being a proud African American man coming out as genderqueer, I always Found Comfort & love In My own Skin & even my Hair of all textures, first time I saw the ever Strong lightning goddess storm in the xmen series on fox kids made a great impact in my life in the early days of the 80s & 90s along other favorite shows back then however,

POC representation in the Future of Anime & western animation even in today's media has been distorted Or even limited on how we as black people are drawn. from caricatures To Stereotypes, or to follow a certain trend to make a profit from viewers & fans be it from influencers & popular media or just to be made Fun Of & Mocked, do to make a profit out of our black origins & History.

I'm glad that we are coming into our own and doing better but there's still work to be done, on how Hollywood treats us, and until we see the next all-black piece of media that's when we make it

We need more Black Hairstyles in animation & we need it more than ever.
The Hair Style Topic, oh yes its no big surprise that hair controversy within media has sparked in outrage,or made in impact throughout, be it in and out of workplaces or in the entertainment industry, I do feel at times things could've been handled with care.
From what I've seen we have gotten 2 steps forward, 4 steps back situation of all the controversies coming from the killmonger haircut that's been sported, which is a limited stifled hairdo on how we are only presented and how our hair can be made into cause it's a following trend, Because this is not the only distinct hairsyle to have Iin animated media, A Half Cut Mop will Not do So Put some Soul Glo & Let It Grow.

NOW you may wonder why i decided to put this post of a Disney main character of afro Latina background, well Luz Noceda I feel has great growth coming out to her friends and chosen family, however doesn't change the fact they didn't do anything for her to show ethnic representation other than speak Spanish, Having to show that aggressive Spicy latina Archetype to a Degree, & have a black father mention in season 2, having given no origin story or closure.

throughout the show this showed has shown great lgbt representation even though at times flawed, in the relationship area. ( another topic for a video COmING SOON) however the owl house has fall flat on ethnic & hair representation, Gus is a great example of a character being sidelined a lot too.

That all hair on poc characters is a good is how you pull it off, in the picture below there tons of great characters in many hairdos complementing them.
sometimes i wish luz character could have handled by poc staff, and have her own break out like the rest of the female characters, cause I kid you not, I met a lot of non-gender-conforming characters or people, who sport many hair designs. It infuriates me such a beautiful person Luz Batista find out the pilot that her character was somewhat sidelined due to the writing Problems & Shipping and I'm baffled how of course white staff members didn't do their research on Afro Latina her cause Luz is beautiful
Knowing other shows such as Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur Do an incredible job of Discussing on how black hair is powerful, magical & comes in many shapes and intricate designs if you know what your doing and I for one have a graceful mother who a beautician coming from her,
We are in an era where black people shouldn't exist or we arent amount to anything and I too had my fair share of my hair being talked about in a nasty way,

Probably not so dark, not in his youth at least. Up till very recently a tan put you in the lower classes because the wealthy didn't need to go out into the sun to labor so the aristocracy would have likely been lighter than the average man.

She flies out to the star system (of her home giant planet) that has a few suns, several moons orbiting each planet, & many planets orbiting the suns. She puts the spacecraft on autopilot and sets a flight path around the orbits of the stars, moons, & planets. She puts them inside a power armor with a jetpack. She proceeds to take them out of the coffin and opens up the cargo bay. She then has them absorb solar radiation, lunar rays, & cosmic energy from her star system to revive him/her/them by inputting the orbit to the ai of their personal power armor suit. 
After absorbing all these rays, energy, & radiation they are revived but also dangerously supercharged from all the excess energy and radiation. Like a few hundred percent more than normal as a demigod and alien hybrid. They were like a mini star about to go supernova. Their hair, eyes, skin, hands, feet, & mouth were blazing with energy. Optic blasts from their eyes, breath blasts from their mouth, & energy blasts from their hands were radiating with power. The power armor suit was able to absorb some of the excess energy to overcharge the defense and offense abilities of the suit but not enough to absorb all of the excess energy. Thinking that an enemy force comes to fight them, seeing them, their alien spouse and partner, & knowing some parts of their alien hybrid ancestry as a result of being an enemy of their alien hybrid mothers people. And the revived demigod and alien hybrid proceeds to fight them to burn the rest of this energy.
Died from stopping a large meteorite from destroying a space frigate. Kanaloa Hawaiian God of the Underworld in some more modern reimaginings. He is a student of Milu. He revived him/her/them. Automotive Armored Prosthetic Cybernetic Bionic Arm. They have an automotive armored prosthetic bionic and cybernetic right arm. He/she/they are physically disabled as someone because he/she/they were disfigured in combat during war. He/she/they were disfigured by an alien super soldier of the Terran Empire. At some point in the past he/she/they have lost use and function to a part of himself/herself/themselves. But through study of the sciences and the help of those who have already done so he/she/they have replaced it with an advanced high-end prosthetic bionic cybernetic replacement. It is a prosthesis that replaces a missing extremity such as an arm or leg. 
The type of limb used is determined by the extent of amputation or loss of the missing extremity and the location of the missing extremity. Artificial limbs are needed for a variety of reasons where a body part is either missing from the body or a body part is too damaged to be repaired. It was built for them by an engineer, an inventor, & mechanic. It was installed on their body through a team of highly trained surgeons and doctors. Having artificial prosthetic limbs comes with a number of complications. Some of which are minor inconveniences while others can be dangerous if ignored. 
Due to the constant risk of damage and mechanical failures the mechanical prosthetics require daily maintenance and repair. However the side effect is the severe backlash when the controlled berserker rage is over. These injuries take full effect when they come out of the induced berserker rage once these chemicals wear off. They have to heal from the damage and pain on their own with their healing factor. The other side effect is that it leaves the user exhausted for several minutes as they run out of endurance and stamina.

Miscellaneous items such as keys, cds, dvds, holographic tapes, notes, and items which fall under no other category are in this tab. Mod tab for weapon and armor modifications. Ammo lists all types of ammunition for guns, grenades, & mines currently in inventory. Currency shows all dollars and copper, bronze, brass, silver, gold, & platinum coins, cash, and credits. 
A unique feature of the Mark 20 Wrist Computer is an adapter plug attached to the underside of the device. This plug is used to perform diagnostics on power armor and mech suits. It can hack into computers. It has a lockpick module to pick the locks of doors, safes, etc. In addition, the plug is also used to gain control of robots, androids, artificial intelligences, automatons, mech suits. When wearing a power armor or mech suit the user does not interact with the wrist computer directly. Instead all the information is displayed through the suit’s integrated HUD but with a different HUD color. 
This implies that the Mark 20 is capable of interfacing with power armor or mech suits onboard systems to allow access to its functionality without having to directly operate the device. It is a wrist gauntlet, wrist bracer or wrist computer. It is a piece of wrist-worn technology. Maple is a fine grain, strong, & tone conductive wood. The quarterstaff was made out of steel and silver. The gemstones encrusted into the quarterstaff were topaz and sapphire. Obsidian forms the base of this spectacular staff. Flame like decorations dance and wrap around the entire staff. With the exception of the handle which has been strengthened with a metal coating of electrum. 
The handle had a polished finish. The barrel shape is balanced and doesn’t taper. The barrel’s thickness was medium. The barrel feels straight and feels more like a manufactured object. The decorative trim material around the barrel and handle was gems and metal. The bottom has been decorated with thick gilded rings each with two gems at equal distance from each other. He/she/they uses the magical quarterstaff as a magically augmented melee weapon. He/she/they uses the magic quarterstaff in close quarters melee combat like a cane, club, or mace. The quarterstaff amplifies his/her/their magical and combat abilities. He/she/they uses the magic staff in full contact magic. He/she/they can fire magic from both ends of the quarterstaff.
He/she/they are a formidable spellcaster, to the point that their weakest spells have the same firepower of high level spells from ordinary wizards. When they really get serious they handle the magic weapon forged specifically for them. They are generally considered more powerful than the traditional magical wand and can be elaborate to the point of being pretentious. The metal magic staff has floating rings and floating gems and crystals around it. The magic staff has a floating sun at the top and a floating moon on the bottom. The modern futuristic metal magic staff is a magical foci which is large and substantial enough to be a viable melee weapon. In that sense, it is a magical and a melee-weapon. The end of the mage stick was made out of rubies. The decorative trims of the mage stick that adorn its barrel were made out of ruby gemstones. The size of the gemstones used in the trim detailing was medium sized rubies. The line weight of the trim detailing of the gemstones was medium. The complexity of the trim detailing was dense. The style of the trim detailing on this mage stick was elegant and flowy. The shape and direction of the trim detailings on the mage stick was covered in branded patterns. The details were rings that wrapped around the barrel. The grip of this magical staff was multi sided. Glowing runes are carved along the entire staff with the exception of the handle. The handle had been smoothened and strengthened. The bottom ends in a reinforced stub made out of peridot crystal known for protection, abundance and love. 
The staff was decorated with ribbons said to offer protection against dark magic. Magical staff are a sign of a powerful magic user. Magic staffs are more powerful than wands. His/her/their magic staff itself is magical. The magical staff also acts as a magical focus object artifact amplifier that amplifies his/her/their magical power. The magic staff is shaped like a cane. The top of the magic staff is carved with a sun, star, and moon. 
The magic staff is elaborately decorated with magical runes, symbols, & sigils. The top of his/her/their magic staff also comes with a floating ring. Inside the floating ring is a large round and smooth glowing gem that acts as a main power crystal. A glowing, seemingly liquid line wraps around the entire staff like blood and covers the handle. The handle has been wrapped in exotic animal skin. The hide of a griffin and hippogriff. The bottom is made of obsidian and has been decorated with gilded linings. A few small gems that seem to float gently above the surface of the staff. The top is made out of superior wood which has been decorated with a mosaic of smooth multi-colored gems. All gems are roughly the same size.

The year is 2049: A lone pirate sails the Straits of Melaka under a red sky, alone… until a storm throws seafarers from across time and space onto the same ship. The five form an unlikely crew: 14th century Muslim diplomat and navigator Zheng He, 19th century pirate queen Sek Yeong, 23rd century space revolutionaries Keliling and Riang, and 21st century climate survivor Nazar, desperate to get off a dying Earth. Together, they delve into what it means to be free, to resist and to grieve, and to stand in solidarity in the face of our future.
Asian Pirate Musical (APM) is the baby of me and six other rad creatives. We had a Work in Progress showing just before Covid (literally the week where everything started shutting down in London.... what a wild time to cram hundreds of people in an unventilated theatre built in the damp arches beneath a railway track...) and then we wrote the whole show in lockdown. We're now at the point where we're pitching it to companies and throwing applications for money at various walls but... yeah.... it's not the best time to be trying to get a show on in London, ngl.

My Revision Of Wish (pt 3): Asha
Welcome back to more of my personal revision of Wish. Today, I will be talking about the main heroine, Asha.

Asha is the canon version gets a lot of criticism for being the overused adorkable archetype of Disney heroines and not really much outside of wanting to help her community and her family. So with my version of Asha, I gave her a more rounded character.
Asha is 17 years old, and the biological daughter of King Magnifico and Queen Amaya (who is Afro-Spainard in this version). She's creative, passionately driven, and wise beyond her years, perhaps more mature than most teens her age. She's an eternal optimist with a sharp wit, but she feels held back by her own parents.
Asha struggles with poor leadership skills, not just as a princess, but also to her team of her friends. She tries too hard to focus on being a better future queen, instead of embracing her teenage youth, the same way Tiana focused too hard on getting her restaurant instead of taking time to relax. She also believes that everyone's wish should be granted, but this poor girl's gonna learn the hard way later on in the story...
Her parents once told her that the stars were always there to guide everyone, but to them, it's treated more like a children's story than the actual truth. She still believes that she can ask the stars for hope and guidance whenever she feels stressed out or hopeless.
King Magnifico: Asha, what are you doing this late at night? Asha: I was just asking the stars for my birthday wish tomorrow. King Magnifico: Come on, don't you think you're a little too old to be wishing on stars?
She once believed that her parents were "life savers" for using their magic to grant people's wishes, and encapsulate them in floating wish orbs. The citizens won't forget their wish once they give them to the King and Queen, but they're still hopelessly waiting for their wishes to granted, prompting Asha to rebel against their dark secret.
Secretly, the King and Queen crush their wishes to make their sorcerer magic stronger and more powerful. Desperate to help the townspeople and feeling unable to retrieve the wishes back to them, Asha makes a desperate plea to the stars, and that plea gives birth to Orion, her soon-to-be guardian and love interest.
With Orion, Asha takes on the responsibility of being his human consciencce, the Jiminy Cricket to his Pinocchio, but she always finds Orion to be amusing and full of joy, no matter how many times she scolds him or teaches him about right or wrong. With Orion's help, she goes out to grant wishes in town with Orion's magic, but the wishes turn out to do more harm than good, and she begins to realize why most wishes shouldn't come true. Asha still feels insecure about being the future queen of Rosas, but she receives endless support and couragement from her friends and from Orion.
After defeating the King and Queen, Orion grants her the title of an honorary Blue Fairy who grants the wishes of the townspeople with her wand. While she admits that she still doesn't know how to be the best possible ruler, she promises to use her magic to grant good wishes, instead of all wishes.
Some of the Disney Princesses she shares similarities with are Aurora, Tiana, Rapunzel, Ariel and Belle. Her bedroom looks similar to the interior of Rapunzel's tower, but instead of the floating lanterns, it's a giant carvas of the Wishing Tree and a night sky with stars, and we get to see Asha create animations with her flipbook like in a very brief scene in the canon film.
While I did find her canon version to be adorable and funny, I recommend that we tone down her adorkable qualities, and make her a more shy and timid princess who mostly keeps to herself. She develops from a shy, reserved girl to a courageous, risk-taking woman who begins to understand which wishes deserved to be granted. Her emotional hook is that she's too scared to talk back to her parents and she lets herself be controlled by the King and Queen instead of demanding what she wants for herself and Rosas, but with Orion to guide her on her journey, she begins to let go of her fear and take a major risk to protect her kingdom.

On Shook, Franklin James Fisher, Lee Tesche, Ryan Mahan and Matt Tong sound refreshed, energized by collaboration and completely confident in their identity. Switching organically between punk, gospel, soul, hip hop, jazz and afro-futurism, Algiers speaks directly to a world under siege, a cacophonous ball of confusion from which they meld a cohesive interrogation of the violence at the heart of American power and a celebration of resistance and survival.
Fisher’s voice is a commanding presence throughout, and the call-and-response construction of many of the songs provides a unifying motif. In the adrenaline-fueled rushes of “Something Wrong” and “Good Man,” the band rediscovers the power that made their first two albums so compelling. But it’s the engagement with collaborators that provides the most interesting moments. Rapper Big Rube calls for resistance over a minimal orchestra swell and massed distant voices on “As it Resounds”; billy woods and Backxwash speak directly to police violence and the manipulation of white grievance over a skittering drum machine and piano motif on “Bite Back.” Mark Cisneros ties the “Out Of Style Tragedy” of domestic weaponization to victory of political and financial self-interest as the band chants Sun Ra’s “Nuclear War” in the background. Jae Matthews provides the female counterpoint to Fisher and Samuel T. Herring on the lacerating “I Can’t Stand It.” LaToya Kent speaks from the perspective of a black mother: “Burying her feelings with the men she bore to life/Her heart heavier than the body.”  On “An Echophonic Soul,” DeForrest Brown, Jr’s electronics and Patrick Shirioshi’s sax provide a keening background to an invocation of the other dead in the electric mist.
The record closes with Lee Bains III intoning, “When we die/The neighbors will bring casseroles/Drag shows will be held in our honor/… /The marchers in the boulevard will take their knee/Raise their fist/Drop their face/Silent in the midday traffic/Like a stone in a quick river/When we die, our beloved, our kinfolk/Fear not, we rise.” The song delivers a modicum of hope amid the bloodshed and culture war bullshit that drives it. At a time when black, female and queer lives and agency are being erased and their histories whitewashed, the diversity of voices and styles gives Shook astonishing power as an expression of possibility. Algiers may not have the answers but they’re damn sure asking the right questions. The material is here, heed the call.
As a sidenote, in January Queens producer King Vision Ultra released Shook World, a mix tape built on stems from Shook (supplied by Algiers) and his own sound archive featuring guests such as DJ Haram, ELUCID, Dreamcrusher and Dis Fig. It is envisioned as a companion piece rather than a remix, a conversation which broadens the scope of both records. Keizo Hoshokura, handsome and arrogant, walked into the gates of Kando like the gods had gifted him to them. His presence immediately caught the attention of the women-- who wouldn't be charmed by him? With his chestnut brown hair, eyes gold like sun rays, and a smile that'd make even goddesses blush, many women found themselves flocking to him.
And Keizo liked that.
Over the years he gained a reputation for being a heartbreaker. He'd be with a girl one day and another one the next. He wasn't too worried about it, of course. There'd always be plenty of women ready and willing to be at his side even for a second.
But most of the ladies here weren't whom he had his sights on.
Shiho Takarano prided herself on being headstrong and opinionated. Society, especially the type she and her sister Kimi came from, didn't take too kindly to a woman having those traits-- but nevertheless she persisted. Many people tried to silence her but never succeeded.
Her head and mind were currently in her book, providing her a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of the upcoming entrance exams.
A coy smile crossed Keizo's lips when he spotted her. It wasn't hard to lose someone like Shiho in a crowd because of how foreign her appearance was. With deep brown skin and velvet brown hair accented with a white streak styled in an afro.
Still with his smile, Keizo made his move. "My oh my, look at who we have here."
Shiho didn't deter from her reading as a man approached her. In fact, the interruption only drew her further into the story.
Keizo hummed. "Purple is a stunning color for you. It really brings out your eyes."
Shiho simply hummed, never looking up from her book. Keizo took a moment to point out the book, Mules and Men.
"A bookworm, I see. I may not be a literary giant, but I know a masterpiece when I see one." Keizo winked at her.
"Shiho."
Shiho finally looked away from her book not at Keizo, but at her approaching sister Kimi. The two looked almost alike except Kimi had their mother's soft eyes while Shiho had what her family called "the angered god stare" from their father.
"Let's hurry. The exam is about to begin." Kimi locked arms with Shiho then made tracks for the auditorium. Along the way, she felt the need to question her sister on what Keizo was doing there.
"It seems like you've gained Hoshokura's attention."
"Don't remind me. I have no business associating with someone like him, especially since he sees me as some easy target." Shiho rolled her eyes at all those things Keizo said to her. Romance wasn't something she sought out, instead focusing on her goals and personal life. If given the choice, she'd run away to a monastery and become a nun instead of tying herself down to a man.
Once the entrance exams were over, Shiho looked for a quiet spot to continue reading. But before she could find one, an all too familiar voice filled her ears.
"Nice work out there, Golden Globe."
Shiho slightly twitched at the nickname. Was Keizo trying to make her punch him in the face? "Please call me Takarano and Takarano only."
"Don't be like that, princess." Keizo strode over to her. He could definitely see some of his future classmates turn green with envy as he approached Shiho. "You're always so tense, harsh, cold. Isn't it time you loosen up? Especially to love?"
Shiho scoffed. "I'm more than happy being single at the moment."
"Your mouth says one thing, but your heart is telling me another." Keizo raised his hand to cup Shiho's chin, only for it to be slapped away by her hand. Keizo could feel a small sting in his heart.
"I know who you are, Hoshokura. I've heard everything there is to know about you," Shiho began. "But I doubt you know me; so allow me to introduce myself: I am Shiho Takarano. Not 'Golden Globe' and certainly not an easy lay for you. And you, sir, are one of the most audacious men I've ever seen."
Before Keizo could say anything, Shiho silenced him with another harsh statement.
"I'm not someone who is effortlessly flattered by flowery words and sculpted features. Why do you think I've never had a suitor in my life? And if you thought you were any different, my apologies that you're not."
"So what are you saying?" Keizo asked.
"I'm saying no, Hoshokura. No I will not go out with you. No I will not be your girlfriend. And no I do not want to be associated, let alone in the vicinity, with you. Now get out my face."
Keizo's eyes widened in shock as she walked away. He'd never been rejected so harshly and publicly before. Was he wrong to underestimate someone like Shiho Takarano? Or was he just so used to winning that he'd never known a challenge? Either way, perhaps this was a lesson he'd needed.

I don't want to put the full syllabus out there just in case its intellectual property of my incredible professor, but I can tell you what we've read as of now (midterms)! I know that not many people have gotten to study black queerness in an academic setting, so I want help how I can.
Zami: A New Spelling of My Name by Audre Lorde – (I couldn't find a pdf sorry!!) a partially-fantasized biography about a Caribbean first-generation American lesbian in NYC
Black Atlantic, Queer Atlantic by Omise'eke Natasha Tinsley – recontextualizing the middle passage as the birthplace of African American and Afro-Caribbean queerness, and how blackness and queerness intersect
The Gilda Stories by Jewelle Gomez – this one's for the fantasy and historical fiction lovers!! it's about a black lesbian vampire finding her identity, family, and agency over the decades (slavery to 2020)
Punks, Bull Daggers, & Welfare Queens by Cathy Cohen – I actually haven't read this yet; it's our reading for next week! but as far as I know it's about the future of queer politics if we stopped centering white supremacist ideals to achieve societal acceptance
and now films!
The Watermelon Woman (1996) – I've seen this film at least 3 times now and it's always great. it's a documentary made by and starring the black lesbian filmmaker Cheryl Dunye as she researches the forgotten life of an actress who became famous for playing "mammy" archetype roles (which parallels her own life and newly-formed relationship with a white lesbian)
The Aggressives (2005) – we also haven't watched this in class yet, but it's a documentary about AGs (aka Aggressives, Studs, or black mascs). I really look forward to seeing this though!!

Tribute to : Julia de Burgos,(February 17, 1914 – July 6, 1953) a Puerto Rico-born journalist and a pioneering force in the 1960s Nuyorican poetry movement in New York, who often wrote her poems in Spanish. In “Ay, Ay, Ay de la Grifa Negra,” which is presented in English in the anthology, she asserts her Black heritage: “Black of pure tint, I cry and laugh / the vibration of being a black statue.”
