Yarn level simulations
I found an interesting research report done by some computer science students. They explored the possibility of procedural yarn models for cloth rendering and simulation. When creating materials in 3D, it is important to get accurate representations of the physical properties the material has.
Even though this is quite a different direction for my topic, I still found it very interesting and added a lot of points mentioned from their report into mine.
Creating a yarn level detail takes a lot of math and physics knowledge which I do not have at the moment. However, in the future possibly after graduation, this would be something that would highly interest me to explore.

How procedural textures are made
I noticed along the way that to make procedural textures, this takes alot of time and practice since it requires a lot of different nodes. Because of this I will start practicing how to make my own textures and how to find the right nodes for the right look.

Feedback Lorenzo
I had my feedback session for my Research Proposal with my coaches at separate times. Sanders focused more on the report aspect of it and looking into the structure. Whilst Lorenzo helped me out with the content of the report.
Lorenzo suggested for my product to be a hypothetical plug in for programs such as Clo or Blender which specialize in crochet and knit. I found this to be a really good idea since I was planning on creating my own textures and felt a bit incomplete.

Vocabulary List
1.1 Vocabulary and Abbreviations
Hand-knit: Knit made by hand rather than using a machine done with two or more needles.
Crochet: Handcraft in which yarns are interlocked and looped with a single thread and hook to form a fabric.
Texture: Image seen on the screen
Object: 3D model or type of asset used.
Geometry: A Solid figure or shape that has three dimensions; length, width and height.
Computer Generated Imagery (CGI): Applications of computer graphics to create images in art, printed media, videos, animations amongst other uses.
Material: Combination of textures for final rendering.
Procedural: Generated procedure
Node: Point of connection that contains a function
UV-map: Map that contains information of how a texture is laid out on a 3D asset.
Map: Image that texture
Tileable: Seamless image that can repeat itself with no visible seams.
Normal map: An image that gives information about bumps and lighting.
Displacement map: an image that displaces the height of the texture.
Image-based textures: Textures that rely on a tileable image, normal and displacement map.
CLO 3D: Program used for digital garment creation
Blender: Program used for 3D modeling and texturing
Substance Designer: Adobe program used for creating procedural textures with node work.
PBR: Physically-based rendering,  the material describes the visual properties of a surface.

Challenges
Something challenging I faced during the research phase was finding a logical way in which to order the report. Since I am exploring very specific terms, I found it really challenging to find the right order, I also felt a bit lost regarding how in depth I should go with each terminology, which is why I added a vocabulary list at the beginning of my report. I did this so I could focus more on the actual research and not having to explain every term I use.

Feedback Proposal
When writing my proposal, I was pretty confident and sure as to what I wanted to research for the semester. I wrote it very in-depth which was a good start for me since later on when we received feedback I did not have to make many changes.
Main comments:
Research question -> My first research question was not really a question, it was more of an exploration project since it was "How can creating.." I was suggested to change this to "How can procedural textures...".
Content -> The feedback I received towards content was very positive, there weren't many changes I had to do which was good since I was just able to start writing and researching.

Talk by Andrew Pierce given at a Blender conference. He talks about how procedural texturing can save costs for 3D designers and time spent per model. This same concept could be applied to clothing if we were to develop more procedural textured mateirals such as hand knits, crochet and other hand crafter materials like lace.

Artist: Rob Bryant,  he works with procedural crochet and hand knits. He has managed to recreate the look of fibers and of the knitted structures very well, however there his way of working is not published anywhere and it is not accesible for other artists like me. These kinds of materials not being published online only give me the option to work with image textures, which do not give me the desired look of what I am trying to achieve when I work with these kinds of materials.

Research into procedural textures for hand knits and crochet on Poliigon and Adobe Substane 3D Assets. As it can be seen, there are none crochet textures available and only machine knitted materials, even some image textures but no procedural.
